Ruby Rose Had to Have Emergency Surgery Following a Stunt Injury That Almost Paralyzed Her

On Thursday, September 26, Ruby Rose posted a graphic video to Instagram that shows her undergoing emergency surgery after a serious stunt injury left her at risk of being paralyzed. The actress, who told her fans she had two herniated discs that nearly severed her spinal cord, documented her entire medical experience and shared all the bloody details.

In a lengthy caption, the 33-year-old Batwoman star also explained why she decided to film the surgery; it turns out, it was all because of a past episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

“Well that was fun,” she began her post. “To everyone asking about my new Pez dispenser scar on my neck… A couple of months ago I was told I needed an emergency surgery or I was risking becoming paralyzed.”

“I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal cord. I was in chronic pain and yet couldn’t feel my arms,” she continued.

“Thank you Dr. Bray for everything you did and for allowing me to keep working and doing what I love,” she added. “I am forever in your debt.”

So, how does the hit ABC drama tie into all of this? Rose clarified in her caption, “Did you not watch that Grey’s Anatomy episode where they left a towel in a patient?? Also, I wanted to see what happens when we go under.”

You can watch the video at your own discretion, below, but be warned… it’s not for the squeamish.

She also shared a less graphic clip on YouTube ahead of her surgery. In it, she tells her doctors where she feels pain.

“It changes all the time, but right now it’s down the right side of my neck,” Rose explained. “It’s this right shoulder blade and around the rib cage area, down the arms. They’re either numb or they’re in pain.”

Though it’s unclear when she sustained the injury, this isn’t the first time Rose has needed surgery for her spine. In 2018, she tweeted that she had been suffering from a spinal issue for the last decade and needed surgery to rectify it. She told fans about her situation after they questioned why she was walking with a cane, later embracing the fact that she needed a little support.

Brie Larson Brought Her ‘Captain Marvel’ Stunt Doubles Onstage During the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards

Captain Marvel broke all kinds of records when it hit theaters in March 2019. It raked in $455 million its opening weekend, it was created by a team of powerful women, and it introduced audiences to a new kind of female superhero. Brie Larson, the star of the film, got tons of recognition for her work in such a badass production; however, when she was given the Best Fight trophy at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Monday, she made it clear there were some unsung heroes who needed serious credit. So she went onstage to accept the award alongside her stunt doubles Renae Moneymaker and Joanna Bennett.

Larson made sure the spotlight was on Moneymaker and Bennett, who both worked intensely by her side on Captain Marvel. Stunt doubles often fly under the radar in action films, and they don’t always get recognized for their dedication. Larson wanted to change that, so the Oscar winner and new director completely turned the attention to her friends and colleagues.

“I wanted to take this moment to really say thank you to the two women who are standing here beside me,” Larson said. “These are the women that trained me and were also the stunt doubles for Captain Marvel. I could not have made this film without them. They are really the baseline of who she is. They are the living embodiment of Captain Marvel.”

After introducing them, Larson cheered, “Say whatever you want!” and turned the mic over to the two professionals, who have also been stunt doubles on Wonder Woman, Avengers: Endgame, and X-Men, to name a few. Bennett talked about how exciting it was to bring a strong female character to life, while Moneymaker recalled the female characters who had influenced her own career.

“As young girls, we wanted to be just like Lara Croft and G.I. Jane, so it’s a real honor to be a part of this character and hopefully pass along some of that inspiration and strength that those iconic women brought to us,” she said. “And lastly, a big thank you to Brie for acknowledging our role in this film. It’s truly a rare acknowledgement, and it means so much not only to both of us, but to the entire stunt community.”

Politician Wears Burqa for Anti-Islam Stunt in the Australian Senate, Horrifies Colleagues

A right-wing politician in Australia is being condemned for wearing a burqa in the country’s Senate chamber as part of an anti-Islam stunt. Pauline Hanson, the leader of the One Nation party, wore the garment to the Senate on Thursday to call attention to her proposed ban on wearing burqas.

The move immediately drew sharp criticism from other political leaders. George Brandis, who leads the Senate, was adamant that there will be no burqa ban in the country. “Senator Hanson, I’m not going to pretend to ignore the stunt that you have tried to pull today by arriving in the chamber dressed in a burqa when we all know you are not an adherent of the Islamic faith,” he said. “I would caution you and counsel you, Senator Hanson, with respect, to be very very careful of the offense you may do to the religious sensibilities of other Australians.”

Another member of the Senate, Penny Wong, called out Hanson for insulting Islam and making a mockery of religious practice. “It is one thing to wear religious dress as a sincere act of faith and another to wear it here as a stunt in the Senate chamber,” she said.

According to The Guardian, Hanson seemed “visibly delighted with the commotion caused by her intervention” and left after she asked Brandis if Australia would ban the garment—a request he refused to allow.

Some countries have already passed laws that prevent women from wearing burqas in public. The German parliament passed a partial ban on burqas in April, and France became the first country to outlaw wearing burqas in public in 2011. Last summer saw conflict in France over burkini swimsuits, which cover more of the body than most suits but are completely unlike actual burqas. A French court suspended a ban on burkinis last August.

Hanson’s party is anti-immigration and anti-Muslim, and she has called for a Trump-style ban on Muslim’s entering Australia.
