7 Fashion Trends Shoppers Actually Bought Into in 2018—and What They Mean

A quick scroll through a street-style slideshow or an influencer’s Instagram account will give you a sense of what some of the most popular trends of the past year have been: Gucci bags continue to be ubiquitous, leopard print has been used in styling as though it were a neutral color, and athleisure remained a constant no matter the occasion. If you want a definitive list of what pieces have staying power, you can look to retailers, with their knowledge of what industry leaders recognize as popular and, more important, the hard data on what shoppers were actually spending their money on in 2018.

According to several major e-commerce sites—including Net-a-Porter, MatchesFashion, and eBay, among others—the biggest sales drivers of any given year can reflect what consumers value, whether that’s comfort (based on the popularity of practical shoes and polarizing athleisure trends) or a desire to be cutting-edge (judging from how well emerging brands are performing in stores). They can also mirror certain industry-wide trends—like how a demand for faux-fur and vegan-leather products might relate to a shift in designers’ and consumers’ priorities when it comes to what their clothes are made of. (Twenty eighteen was the year cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles would ban fur, after all.)

Ahead, we’re breaking down seven of the biggest retailer takeaways of the year that say as much as what happened in the past as it does about fashion’s future.

Weird Celebrity Souvenirs You Won't Believe People Actually Bought

If you get paid tomorrow and want to do a little splurging, look no further than PizzaSlime.com, which is selling Noah Cyrus’ tears for $12,000. Sounds like a bargain, right? I mean, if you’re lucky to receive a random check for $12,000, there’s no better way to spend it than on a vile of tears from Miley Cyrus’ little sister. Who needs a savings account or a house? How boring! How normal! Noah Cyrus’ tears are absolutely worth forking over every cent you have.

In all seriousness, what? This isn’t a prank. This isn’t a joke. This is an actual vile of actual tears from Noah Cyrus selling for $12,000. The stunt is clearly just a way to promote Cyrus’ EP Good Cry, which drops this Friday (September 21). PizzaSlime.com’s description of these tears reads, “This is approximately 12 tears made by Noah Cyrus as a result of sadness. Human digestion of these tears is not suggested cause tears are generally pretty salty and that would just be super fucking weird if you drank someone else’s tears.”

There are so many questions running through my head right now. How do you accurately count tears? What was Cyrus crying about? What if the tears get lost in the mail? Will you receive a second jar of tears for free?

Cyrus posted about the sale herself, which is only available for 48 hours. She has other merch as well, like hoodies and sweatpants, just in case you already have a vile of celebrity tears on your mantle.

If you think buying tears is weird, just wait until you see what other souvenirs celebrities have sold on the Internet. Check out the eight most surprising buys, below:

Adele’s bag of air. Last year an Adele fan tried selling a bag of air from her concert on eBay. The post was eventually taken down, but at one point bids were as high as $1,500.

Scarlett Johansson’s tissue. In 2008 the actress signed her used tissue and sold it for $5,300. She donated the proceeds to charity. No word on whether the fan who bought the tissue caught Johansson’s cold.

Justin Timberlake’s breakfast. A 19-year-old *NSYNC super-fan got her hands on Timberlake’s half-eaten French toast back in 2000 for the cool price of $1,025. Like Johansson, Timberlake gave the cash to charity.

Britney Spears’ used pregnancy test. CNN reports that an Ottawa radio station secured the positive pregnancy test BritBrit tossed into a Los Angeles hotel room wastebasket in 2005 and sold it for $5,001. Insert obligatory “Oh, baby, baby” joke. (I’ll see myself out.)

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s breath. Yup, someone pulled an Adele in 2010 with Brangelina’s “breath.” YourTango reports that a celebrity spotter named Joe Wilson captured Pitt and Jolie’s “breath” in a jar and sold it online for $523. Wouldn’t it be nice to be a person who has $500 to spend on quite literally nothing?

John Lennon’s tooth. A Canadian dentist snagged one of the late Beatles’ pearly whites for $31,200. “I want to hold your hand tooth.”

William Shatner’s kidney stone. GoldenPalace.com, a casino known for buying crazy things like the Virgin Mary–shaped grilled cheese, reportedly bought Shatner’s kidney stone for $25,000. Which begs the question: How the hell was this delivered?

Queen Elizabeth II’s underwear. One pair of royal undergarments were sold to a questionable person for $18,101, according to Christian Post I object to this on every imaginable level.

What happened to just buying a nice poster?! The Internet is a terrifying place.

The Special Gift Meghan Markle Bought Herself That She Plans to Give Her Daughter

Meghan Markle dropped some serious cash on a present to herself following the second season of Suits—and she has a special future planned for it, too. According to a resurfaced interview in Hello! from 2015, Markle splashed out on a classic Cartier French Tank watch after the USA Network hit was renewed once again.

“I’ve always coveted the Cartier French Tank watch,” Markle told Hello!. “When I found out Suits had been picked up for our third season—which, at the time, felt like such a milestone—I totally splurged and bought the two-tone version.”

For reference, it’s gorgeous; although we don’t know exactly which model she got, take a peep at 18K pink gold and steel model, which boasts a price tag of $7,050.

But best of all is the empowering message she had engraved on the back: “To M.M. From M.M.”

She knows exactly what’s she’s going to do with it in the future, too. She told Hello!: “I plan to give it to my daughter one day. That’s what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them.”

As Harper’s Bazaar also pointed out, there’s another special connection the Cartier watch has to the royal family. The late Princess Diana was often seen wearing her own version of the Tank. (You think Meghan knew then she was destined for royalty???)

All that said, it’s pretty great that she bought herself a present to celebrate the success of the show she starred in. It’s also sweet that she’s turning it into a family heirloom that will be passed down through generations, especially now that her life has changed in so many ways after marrying Prince Harry and becoming the Duchess of Sussex. Until she and Harry decide to start a family—something they’ve spoken frequently and publicly about before—we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for a two-toned Tank Française sighting.

Prince Harry Bought Prince Louis a $10,000 Christening Gift as a Tribute to Princess Diana

His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge may be only 2 months old, but it looks as though he’s already living like a royal a.k.a. receiving gifts that cost thousands of dollars. The tiniest Windsor is being christened on Monday, July 9—and to celebrate the occasion, Prince Harry, his uncle, reportedly dropped £8,000 (that’s around $10,620) on a first-edition Winnie-the-Pooh book. (No word yet whether or not Meghan Markle added her name to her husband’s present, though she’s reportedly an excellent gift giver herself.)

According to The Sun, the price tag was originally even higher. An unnamed source told the publication that Prince Harry had initially planned to get Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, “on sale” for £24,000 (almost $32,000), but “decided Winnie-the-Pooh would be more suitable for a first tome.”

Why spend thousands on a book for a baby who can’t even read yet? According to The Sun, it’s a tribute to Princess Diana. “One of Harry’s happiest childhood memories was being read a bedtime story by his mother,” the source said. “She loved all the old classics, and Harry had the brilliant idea of starting a little library of first editions for Louis, Charlotte, and George to enjoy as they get older.”

This inaugural first edition, according to The Sun, is one of 30,000 that were published way back in 1926.

As for Prince Louis’s christening, it will be performed by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the same bishop who christened Prince George and Princess Charlotte. The ceremony will also take place in the same church as Prince George’s christening, the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace, for an audience of 20 to 30 people. That exclusive guest list includes Louis’ six godparents, all close friends and family of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Prince Harry, however, was not asked to be Louis’ godfather. Then again, after such a generous gift maybe William and Kate will change their minds?

Literally All The Things I've Bought This Week That Caused Me Anxiety

If there’s one thing every millennial with nonrich parents can relate to, it’s financial issues—or, more specifically, the ceaseless, dogged presence of money-induced anxiety that we keep closer to us than our Velcro wallets. Even when I feel like I’m in a decent place financially, a purchase as seemingly mundane as a tall Starbucks drink weighs on me. I have an ever-present guilt about my inability to save, and I’m constantly pulling my hair out over what the next decade of my life looks like. That, mixed with an inner-dialogue justifying why I deserve to splurge on an opulent Burger King meal after a great business meeting, is exhausting.

Plus, I live in L.A., where the wealth divide runs the gamut from a homeless state of emergency to Taylor Swift’s $25 million mansion. Every day I witness restaurant patrons drop hundreds on dinner—yet for me, spending even $20 on food feels outlandish, spoiled, and financially irresponsible.

Money is my most real and regular anxiety trigger, and overcoming it seems unfeasible. But in an effort to lay it all out and visibly witness how ridiculous my negative inner-monologue is, I made a list of everything I bought this week that sent me spiraling into a black hole of anxious darkness. Behold.

A Grande iced chai latte with soy milk from Starbucks: $5.05

Every time I go to Starbucks, I berate myself about being a selfish, greedy monster who might as well max out my credit card with a trip to the Amalfi coast that I can’t afford. I’m not a coffee drinker or caffeine addict, so a tea doesn’t feel like a necessity. Thus, even waiting in line makes me break out in hives. I harangued myself so much about this one purchase that I was actually under the impression I went to Starbucks every day this week. But after looking at my bank statement, it turns out I went only twice. Even so, I told myself, “You don’t need this, you gluttonous brat.”

Note: I am one purchase deep and already sweating, looking at this seemingly endless trail of $1.99s and $4.99s.

A tuna sub from Jersey Mike’s: $11.67

I had just worked out super hard at the gym and decided to put my foot down. I needed to nourish myself with real food. So I got the full combo: a six-inch sub, chips, and a soda. If you don’t know what Jersey Mike’s is, it’s sandwich hell. It’s where hoagies go to die. Still, this was a splurge to me. This is how I “treat yo’self”: a sandwich with extra vinegar and no banana peppers. I wanted them, but they cost extra.

Ugh, this exercise is not helping—I actively feel bad about myself.

Groceries from Trader Joe’s: $13.46

I felt so guilty and downtrodden about buying myself a lump of sandwich detritus that I went straight to Trader Joe’s to buy two frozen dinners, praying that it would force me to stay in my cave for the next two days. It did, but it forced my grubby little hand elsewhere…

Amazon movie rental: $4.99

Now stuck at home with my groceries, I rented this lesbian movie on Amazon called Becks that I didn’t even like. I hated it so fucking much! It’s been a week, and I still haven’t been able to let it go—that I spent $5 on renting a movie, which I didn’t need, which sucked.

Gasoline: $40.23

Just slay me now. Split my head in two like a butterflied shrimp.

Friday night sister date—dinner and a movie: $40.22 Sometimes, I convince myself that I’m a human who’s allowed to feel joy and treat myself to companionship on the weekends. So I went to my favorite restaurant, Buffalo Wild Wings, and saw Blockers with my sister. This was supposed to bring me fleeting happiness, but instead it made me sweat thinking about the $40 I threw away.

Brunch with a friend who just got laid off: $45.65

This one really physically wounded me, especially because I had already spent $40 two days earlier. One of my closest friends was laid off a few weeks ago, and I’ve been wanting to take her out for a nice meal—yes, $50 is a “nice” meal—because that’s what you do when a friend is down. It feels good to help! I want to help. I want to feel confident enough in myself and my finances that I can take a friend out and not get as nasty with myself, but here we are. I am nearly $50 shorter for trying to be a good friend. You sicko.

A large Vita Coco coconut water: $4.79

I felt very dehydrated after another big workout and once again thought it’d feel good to quench myself and give my body what it needs instead of feeling drained and starved for basic nutrients. Wrong. In my fraught, broken psyche, it felt like I committed a war crime. You are every stereotype of an elitist Los Angeles prick, I told myself. You are owning yourself, lib.

ANOTHER ICED CHAI LATTE WITH SOY MILK: $5.05

You just can’t help yourself, can you bitch? You get a Grande instead of a Tall, which is basically a cup of ice with the mist of someone else’s coffee breath, and then you complain about needing rent money? Disgusting.

If anything, this exercise made me realize how bad I am at feeding myself. But I was also reminded of much I’ve been working out lately, which is extremely validating and makes me feel morally superior. As a person with mental health issues—including but not limited to anxiety and depression—I’m not sure how to grapple with the daily cost of living and the gloomy effect it has on my spirit. Sometimes I remember the mythological fallacy of being a homeowner, and I completely crumble. I’m 26 and can barely buy a fresh juice without convincing myself that I’m coastal elite trash. On that note, while checking my statements for this cute little exercise, I realized I’ve been donating monthly to the ACLU since the 2016 election. I canceled it. I’m so sorry, but I can’t afford rights right now.
