Kiernan Shipka Will Star in the New 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Series


Fans flipped out in September when news broke that a Riverdale sister series based on Sabrina the Teenage Witch was in the works. The show, which is actually rooted from the graphic novel The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is expected to be darker and more violent than the Melissa Joan Hart show we all grew up loving. Like, in this world, Sabrina deals with legitimate evil forces and the occult.

The show was originally supposed to air on The CW, Riverdale‘s home, but it was quickly kicked over to Netflix. Fans, naturally, speculated for months about who would step into Sabrina Spellman’s shoes; at one point, Selena Gomez’s name was even thrown into the mix.

But now we know for sure who’s playing Sabrina. No, it’s not Gomez, but it is a very talented actress from a beloved television series. Any guesses? It’s—wait for it—Kiernan Shipka from Mad Men.

“Dream come true! Dream #Sabrina! So excited to make magic with this lady,” Riverdale show-runner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa posted to Twitter on Friday evening, alongside a photo of Shipka. Check it out for yourself, below:

“We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list. This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own,” Aguirre-Sacasa also said in a statement.

There’s no word yet on an official release date for this Sabrina series; there isn’t even a confirmed official title. However, the first season will have 20 hour-long episodes—which is a lot of magic. We can’t wait.

'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Is Officially Getting Picked Up by Netflix


Sabrina the Teenage Witch, that staple of ’90s TV, is officially coming back to the small screen, courtesy of Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Netflix. Sabrina was originally reported to be in the works as a possible Riverdale companion on The CW, but [Deadline is now reporting] that the show is instead heading straight to Netflix to air for 20 episodes over two seasons.

For Riverdale fans, there’s more good news: there will apparently be a crossover with the Riverdale team working to bring Sabrina back to the screen. Aguirre-Sacasa will be back to write the pilot as he did for Riverdale, and Lee Toland Krieger, who directed the first episode of Riverdale, is coming back to helm the first episode of Sabrina.

The name of the series is still up in the air—although it’s officially based on the graphic novel The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, not the ’90s cult show. Considering that that book is also part of the Archie Comics universe (which Aguirre-Sacasa presides over as chief creative officer), the theory about Betty’s mom in Riverdale being related to Sabrina is starting to look like it makes just a bit more sense, no? It also clears up why Sabrina was left out when other Archie Comics characters were always popping up in Riverdale.

However, there’s a twist to this Sabrina reboot: Remember how happy and bubbly the original show was? Not so much here. Just like the unexpectedly dark world of Riverdale, the Sabrina revival is “a dark drama in the horror genre,” according to Deadline. The report adds that, “tonally,” it’s more like Rosemary’s Baby and the Exorcist. Which is fine, because who needs sleep anyway?

There are more details on that, too—some of which we knew already, but it makes them no less exciting, should a reminder be needed: According to Deadline, Sabrina will be “wrestling to reconcile her dual nature—half-witch, half-mortal—while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.” Existential crisis plus actual world-threatening crisis? Exhausting to be Sabrina, but it sounds like it’ll make for some riveting episodes.

Fingers crossed that the original date for the show to be released—sometime during the 2018-2019 season—doesn’t get pushed back too much further, because we’re not entirely certain we can wait.

In the meantime, we are pretty sure The CW is still happy—after all, it has its own Charmed reboot in the works, helped by Jane the Virgin Creator Jennie Snyder Urman.

Jennifer Lawrence Has a Teenage Doppelgänger Who Says She's Not a Fan


Alexia Maier, a 17-year-old working model from Florida, swears she’s not a clone of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, but honestly, we aren’t sure if we believe her. Their resemblance is pretty uncanny. But the teenager told the Daily Mail that she was unaware of just how much she looked like the Mother! actress until random fans began approaching her on the street and mistaking her for the star.

“At first I thought it was a joke when people started saying I looked like Jennifer Lawrence,” Maier told Daily Mail. “But when I started getting dozens of comments about my J.Law similarities, I started to realize it myself.”

Maier added that the stares and mistakes first began during a visit to New York City. “People will ask me for autographs,” she said. “I think one of my favorite examples is when a woman said ‘Jennifer, I’m your biggest fan!’ I told her, ‘I’m not Jennifer!’ but the woman immediately said, ‘Are you sure?’ I’ll never forget her reaction.”

And sure, people love to say they look like famous celebrities, but just take a look at Maier’s photos on Instagram and see if you can spot the difference between her and Lawrence:

While Maier acknowledges her look-alike appearance has only brought positive things to her life she told the Daily Mail that she’s actually not a huge fan of the Hunger Games actress.

“I know this is not the answer people are expecting from me, but I am not a fan,” she said. “Even so, I can acknowledge that Jennifer has definitely impacted my life in strange ways. I got a lot of attention in the first couple years of high school because of my similarities to her. I was also subjected to a lot of online attention when I was pretty young, good and bad, but both have managed to help shape me as a person.”

Despite claiming she’s not a fan, Maier still appears to be having fun with her doppelgänger fame and even attended the Hunger Games exhibition in New York to share a very cheeky picture next to Lawrence’s costume. Odds are it would fit Maier perfectly too.

A 'Riverdale' Spin-Off About Sabrina the Teenage Witch Is in the Works

For months, fans have been speculating that Sabrina Spellman—Sabrina the Teenage Witch—would be entering the Riverdale universe soon, and they were right. Well, kinda. No, Sabrina isn’t joining Riverdale next season alongside Betty and Veronica, as far as we know, but a companion series about her is in the works at The CW.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Riverdale maestro Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is developing a new TV series titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina about everyone’s favorite witch. The show is still in its infancy, but Aguirre-Sacasa and company are eyeing for a potential 2018-2019 TV season launch. That’s honestly not too far away, so it’s safe to start getting excited about this!

If The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is green-lit, it won’t be anything like the beloved ’90s series starring your fave Melissa Joan Hart. It’ll be way darker, sticking closely to the Archie Comics series it’s based on, which deals more with evil forces and the occult. THR describes it as a mix between Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist—so, in other words, very scary. Something tells us a wisecracking cat named Salem isn’t a part of the equation.

It’s no surprise The CW is looking to tell more stories in the Archie Comics universe. Riverdale was such a runaway hit for the network, and since Aguirre-Sacasa is the chief creative officer at Archie Comics, he’s sitting on literally thousands of potential stories. “One of the nice things about me being a part of Archie Comics is having access to a library of 4,000-5,000 characters,” Aguirre-Sacasa told THR. “Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats … those are characters who can very easily support their own show. But we [also] have superheroes. So in success, yes, the goal is to expand that way.”

Get ready, Riverdale fans: Something wicked this way comes.
