'Riverdale' Fans Are Not Happy About Archie and Betty Possibly Hooking Up

Last night’s Riverdale episode was probably traumatic for “Bughead” and “Varchie” shippers because both couples ended things on sour notes. After Archie told Veronica “I love you” and she didn’t say it back, the two had a heated spat that ended with Veronica tearfully getting into a car and driving away. Meanwhile, Jughead was royally pissed at Betty for doing that stripper dance at the White Wyrm to become a Serpent. He wants her to stay as far away from that world as possible, and they quasi broke up—for what seems like the fifth time—after their own fight. It was an emotional final five minutes, to say the least.

And it only got crazier at the very end: The final shot of the episode showed a shirtless (of course) Archie staring wistfully at Betty through his bedroom window. She stares back at him, too, and the implication here is that they’re going to get together—or, at the very least, revisit some latent feelings. Yes, my friends, it seems like “Barchie”—Betty and Archie—is about to make an appearance on Riverdale.

Fans aren’t happy about it, though. The social media response to Betty and Archie’s thirsty stare-off has been, surprisingly, very charged and angry. Yes, there are some fans who’ve been shipping Betty and Archie since the beginning, but the majority of them see this relationship as a step backwards. For them, Betty and Archie had their chance in season one, but that ship has sailed now. Too much work has gone into establishing “Varchie” and “Bughead” for those relationships to just disappear. Here are the most, erm, spirited reactions we found to this Betty and Archie nonsense:

Of course, it’s possible Betty and Archie won’t hook up at all. Riverdale is notorious for its ambiguous cliffhangers, so we could be creating something out of nothing. We’ll have to tune into next week’s episode to find out for sure, though. Get your ponytails ready.

'Riverdale' Season 2 Episode 8 Recap: Are Betty and Archie Going to Hook Up?

Tonight’s Riverdale episode started in the greatest way possible: Veronica and Archie having sex. Everywhere. This is how they’re coping with the masked lunatic wreaking havoc around town, apparently, and I’m cool with it. Archie says, “I love you” to Veronica, which freaks her out because that’s what always happens on TV shows. Someone always freaks out when they hear that phrase, but in real life people have way more chill.

Meanwhile, the Riverdale Reaper, whom we learned about last week, is legitimate. Still, Jughead doesn’t think he’s the Black Hood because he’s 60 years old. (“I’m dubious,” Jughead said specifically, like the pretentious monster he is.) Ironically, though, the house where the Black Hood sent Betty belonged to the family who was murdered by the Riverdale Reaper: the Conways. Connections!

Switching gears a bit: F.P. Jones is getting out of jail, which is great, but I also don’t care. This causes Betty and Jughead to drop their Riverdale Reaper/Black Hood lead, so they ask Archie and Veronica to take over….and that’s a big mistake. They literally can’t stop having sex!

Speaking of sex: It’s beyond obvious Cheryl wants to bone Josie. Like, she pulls out a bottle of lavender when they’re changing in the locker room and starts massaging her. They’d honestly be the hottest couple on this show, so I ship them.

“Take your male gaze and your male privilege and get out of the women’s locker room!” — Cheryl, icon.

Veronica’s parents are starting to ship her and Archie, too, but their reasoning is convoluted. The Black Hood sent a letter to the Lodge residence saying he’s going to start punishing them for their “sins,” so Hiram and Hermione want Archie to spend more time with Veronica because he’s “brawny and devoted to her.” That, in a nutshell, is my type.

And LOL, it’s hilarious how little I care about Jughead’s storyline. He’s made himself the makeshift leader of the Serpents and suggests the gang meet with Mayor McCoy to “get the South Side back.” Everyone’s in favor, except for Tall Boy, but their tête-à-tête ends because Jughead has to go pick up F.P. from jail. Blah, blah, blah.

Wow, they’re really making a mountain out of a molehill with this whole, “Archie said, ‘I love you’ but Veronica didn’t” subplot. Everyone just needs to relax and focus on their SATs. Don’t these kids have SATs?

Nope, but they do have murder mysteries to solve. Archie and Veronica visit Sheriff Keller’s station to inquire about the Riverdale Reaper. Their investigation leads them to the house where the Black Hood lured Betty, a.k.a the Devil’s House.

The Riverdale Reaper murder is essentially a carbon copy of The Amityville Horror, BTW, but let’s just blaze past that. It turns out the family murdered by him actually has five members, but only four died. So there’s a third child out there who’s now grown-up. The Black Hood?!

Maybe. Veronica and Archie learn this boy’s real name, Joseph Conway, and find out he changed his last name to Svenson after the murders. Joseph Svenson, interestingly, is the name of the creepy janitor who’s been lurking around the past two episodes. They’re the same person. Archie and Veronica go to confront Joseph, and he claims the Riverdale Reaper is dead. They ultimately conclude he’s not the Black Hood and move on…so this whole side narrative was for nothing.

Meanwhile, F.P. gets out of jail, and there’s clear sexual tension between him and Alice Cooper. Imagine if they got together? It’d be like Rufus Humphrey and Lily van der Woodsen getting together on Gossip Girl! Anyway, he’s in AA and wants to leave the Serpents, which doesn’t sit well with Jughead, who, remember, is now a full Serpent. They have an argument about it, but F.P. ultimately allows Jughead to stay with the Serpents…without him. Again, this narrative is so boring. Betty suggests throwing F.P. a “retiring from the Serpents” party, which sounds both dull and dumb.

But wait, this twist isn’t dull and dumb: Because F.P. is leaving the Serpents, Betty now wants to join to “keep an eye on Jughead.” In order to join, though, she has to do some misogynistic stripper dance. WTF?!

Also WTF: Penny Peabody, the sketchy Serpent lawyer who’s now blackmailing Jughead, calls Jughead and says she has another job for him. He refuses, and she threatens to harm Betty. He still doesn’t take the bait.

Alice Cooper, former Serpent, and Betty show up to F.P.’s party together. Alice starts doing tequila shots and is immediately my hero. Veronica and Archie talk about their “I love you” kerfuffle at this party, too, but they don’t resolve anything and it’s awkward. They then sing because why the hell not?

And then Betty does it! She dances! On a stripper pole! In lingerie! In front of her mother and Jughead and everybody! Like, Betty can do whatever she wants, but this just felt awkward and forced and strange. F.P. then says he’s not retiring from the Serpents—but this isn’t a choice. Penny Peabody agreed to alleviate Jughead from his obligations to her if F.P. stands in his place. This is all so Gangs of New York.

“He’s brawny and devoted to you.” — Hermione Lodge describing Archie (and also my type)

We ends things with trouble in paradise for both couples: Veronica tearfully says it should matter to Archie that she can’t say “I love you” back to him and runs off. Jughead’s mad at Betty for doing that dance, and they quasi break up. Everyone’s crying; it’s a mess.

But then…what? The final scene in the episode shows Betty and ARCHIE looking at each other through their windows like thirsty animals. Are they about to hook up?

Parting thoughts: BARCHIE!!!!!

'Riverdale' Season 2 Episode 7 Recap: A Theory About the Black Hood Is Debunked

Tonight’s Riverdale episode debunked a major theory about the Black Hood. Which one, you ask? Read on to find out (spoilers ahead):

Welp, it looks like the Black Hood isn’t done lurking around Riverdale just yet: He/she writes another letter to the town, saying the next 24 hours will be a “test.” If the Riverdale citizens stop “sinning,” he/she will stop killing. If they don’t, the blood bath continues. This is all getting out of hand! Betty brings up the very valid point about how it’s confusing the Black Hood managed to break into the jail and shoot the Sugar Man. Who in town has that kind of access?! Cough, Sheriff Keller, cough. (P.S.: If you read that last sentence and had no context of Riverdale, you’d think I was talking about Candy Land or some shit.)

Penny Peabody, that sketchy lawyer who F.P. told Jughead to stay away from, pops back up and asks Jughead for a favor. F.P. was jumped by Ghoulies in prison, allegedly, and in order to help him Penny needs Jughead to pick up a crate on the South Side and deliver it to some place called Greendale. She’s definitely lying, but her bangs look amazing so I don’t care. BTW: Drugs are in the crate Jughead’s about to be traipsing all over town. Drugs! Is it Jingle Jangle? Riverdale’s official crop?

Jughead enlists Archie to help deliver these drugs to Greendale. Archie waxes poetic about how he fantasizes about moving to NYC with Jughead and living out their writing/music dreams. He wants to live in the East Village, which Jughead says doesn’t exist (???). It does, but LOL that they think they could afford living there on writer/musician salaries.

They get a flat tire en route to Greendale, of course, and Archie doesn’t have a spare. A strange man pulls up and offers Jughead—and only Jughead—a ride to Greendale. He leaves Archie alone. This will end badly, but are you surprised? Jughead makes the worst decisions always.

This strange, scary man starts saying the Black Hood is doing “God’s work” and then brings up someone called the “Riverdale Reaper.” Meanwhile, Archie finally gets a spare tire, which means this whole situation could’ve been avoided had Jughead just waited 45 extra minutes.

And it’s definitely a situation: Creepy Stranger Man has a gross, dead deer under a tarp in his car. Jughead’s spooked. Apparently, the Riverdale Reaper murdered an entire family back in the day. No one knows what happened to him, so it’s possible the Riverdale Reaper is actually the Black Hood. (Well, that’s what this crazy show is implying, at least.) Creepy Stranger Man then goes rogue, saying he’s leaving Jughead behind and taking the crate with him. He calls Jughead a “sinner,” but thank God Archie shows up and takes Jughead/the crate away before things get crazy. Archie’s so doofy, but I’d swoon if he saved me from any situation.

They deliver the crate and are greeted by a scary woman who says Jughead will be making more deliveries to her. This is the only storyline that’s unfolded so far in the episode, and I’m pissed.

And I was right: Penny Peabody lied. F.P. isn’t injured, and she secretly filmed Jughead delivering those drugs to Greendale, which means she has leverage over him. She’s now ordering him to keep funneling drugs to Greendale…or she’ll turn this video into the police. She has a bone to pick with the Jones family because “F.P. made a promise that he didn’t keep.” Why TF is this show turning into The Godfather?

But thank God, we’ve moved onto another storyline about Josie, the low-key best character on this show. Josie’s mom, Mayor McCoy, is stressed to the max about the Black Hood—which has Josie stressed. On top of that, Josie’s going behind the Pussycats’ backs and writing songs without them.

She has a reason, though: Cheryl apparently slipped a demo of the Pussycats singing to a record producer, and he wants Josie (and only Josie) to have time in his studio. Why Cheryl has such a vested interest in Josie all of a sudden is…suspect, to say the least. But honestly let’s keep the focus on these two characters for the rest of the episode.

Chuck Clayton, that gross dude who Dark Betty took down last season, reemerges and asks Josie on a date, and she iconically refutes him. Cheryl tells Josie she wants to help her career blossom (eh?!) as a thank-you for saving her from Nick St. Clair. However, something tells me there’s more to this story…like a romance?

The Pussycats find out about Josie’s solo songwriting sessions, flip out, and quit the band. Someone left a note in their lockers spilling the tea, and it’s probably the same someone who left a note in Josie’s locker saying they were “watching her.” Shook, Josie (literally) bumps into Gross Chuck and asks for a ride home. He says he’s “trying” to be better, which makes me want to groan. They then go dancing at Pop’s (???), but their fun is interrupted by Mayor McCoy, who’s been worried sick about Josie’s whereabouts. What the hell is this episode even about?

Mayor McCoy tells Josie someone’s been sending her death threats. The sheriff then asks Josie if she’s received any weird notes, and she (of course) says no. Why do teens on these shows always lie to the police?!

And it gets worse: Josie gets another message from the weirdo leaving her notes that says, “If I can’t have you, no one can.” This person also sends a portrait of her face and a pig’s heart. This sicko gave Josie a literal pig’s heart! Josie and Cheryl think Chuck is the one behind these letters, which means he probably isn’t. My money’s on the loner janitor they keep panning to randomly.

Wait…maybe it’s Cheryl leaving the notes: We end this chapter with a shot of Cheryl sketching a picture of herself and Josie together. Listen, if Riverdale‘s about to turn Cheryl into some deranged, queer stalker, then I’m done. Pop-culture needs to stop portraying LGBTQ+ characters as unbalanced.

Cut to the next storyline, which is about Betty and Veronica. Kevin’s complaining to them about his father, the sheriff, who he says is acting weird because of all this Black Hood nonsense. Betty thinks this means Sheriff Keller is the Black Hood (which, coincidentally, is a pretty big fan theory). Veronica thinks it means he’s having an affair. Obviously, they each go on wild goose chases to prove their points.

Veronica convinces Kevin to have a sleepover with her; meanwhile, Betty goes to Sheriff Keller’s office and straight-up asks how the Black Hood broke into the jail cell. He says the Black Hood got in through forced entry, which is probably true, but Betty obviously doesn’t believe him because she’s a Serious Detective.

Veronica suggested having a sleepover at Kevin’s house so she can look for evidence that his dad’s having an affair. Betty’s not there, but she asks Veronica to find proof he’s also the Black Hood. This is all so dumb.

Veronica’s investigation leads her down to the basement, where Sheriff Keller is shirtless, lifting weights, and looking like the damn salt-and-pepper snack I’ve been talking about for weeks! Like, holy hell, this dude is ripped. Why isn’t he shirtless at all times? Veronica and Sheriff Keller have a strange but vague chat that doesn’t prove if he’s having an affair or if he’s the Black Hood. It only proves that he’s a capital-H hottie.

So Betty takes matters into her own hands: She breaks into the Keller’s house—and into Sheriff Keller’s office—and finds what looks like a black hood in one of the drawers. But Sheriff Keller comes back before anything happens, and he calls Betty’s dad, Hal. Apparently, he has an alibi for all the Black Hood’s attacks, which proves he isn’t the perp.

This isn’t good enough for Betty, though, so she and Veronica tail Sheriff Keller’s car to a motel. That’s where they find him and—wait for it—Mayor McCoy making out. So Veronica’s right: He’s having an affair.

Then, the Black Hood calls Pop’s and delivers an ominous final message: Everyone failed, they’re all sinners, and the “reckoning” is imminent. I should be scared, but I’m still thinking about shirtless Sheriff Keller pumping iron in his basement. This show is perfect.

'Riverdale' Stars K.J. Apa and Madelaine Petsch Say Black Hood's Identity Will Be Revealed Soon

Riverdale may be taking the week of Thanksgiving off, but there are still plenty of theories and conspiracies to feast on before it returns November 29. For one, there’s the never-ending mystery of the Black Hood’s identity and how Betty will cope with the reveal of the man or woman behind the mask. There’s also Fred Andrews, who may not be out of the woods after he was nearly gunned down by the Black Hood in the season two premiere. And what about Madelaine Petsch‘s Cheryl Blossom, who has been seriously underused throughout season two thus far? It turns out that her story—and love life—is about to majorly heat up.

With plenty more to discuss, we caught up with K.J. Apa (Archie Andrews) and Madelaine Petsch to break down all those theories and more! Read on.

When you found out who the Black Hood was, what was your reaction?

K.J. Apa: I already knew. I guessed it. But everything is very…it’s hard to say.

Madelaine Petsch: I didn’t guess it. When I read it, it shocked me, but you won’t have to wait much longer. A couple more episodes and the mystery will be revealed.

Let’s talk about Fred Andrews. In last week’s episode, Archie casually asked if his dad was doing OK. My first reaction was, “Hmm, a line like that wouldn’t be in the script without it meaning something.” Right?

K.J.: There’s a reason for everything.

Should viewers be worried about him?

K.J.: I think at this stage, yeah. The reason for that scene was to give a little bit of concern for how he’s doing health-wise, I think, but yeah. For sure, they should be a little bit concerned.

In other random thoughts, feel free to confirm or deny: Since Cheryl and Archie both have red hair, is there a chance they could be related?

PHOTO: Diyah Pera

K.J.: I’ve wondered that before.

Madelaine: Well, we’ve kissed on the show, so let’s not give the incest thing any more fire than it needs!

K.J.: Yeah, but like, we didn’t know [then] that we could have been related.

Madelaine: I personally think no. I know plenty of other redheads that I’m not related to personally, so…

K.J.: True, true.

Madelaine: …that I grew up with, but you never know. It is Riverdale. My whole theory now is it’s Riverdale. Anything can happen!

What can you tease about the rest of the year?

Madelaine: Cheryl has an unexpected love interest coming into the picture very soon.

Is it a man or a woman?

Madelaine: We’ll find out. TBD!

And K.J., what about Archie?

K.J.: Archie is out for revenge right now. He wants [to take down] the Black Hood.

This 'Riverdale' Theory Suggests Alice Isn't Betty's Biological Mother

With every new episode of Riverdale, it’s becoming more obvious the mysterious Black Hood is a member of the Cooper family. At this point, though, it could be anyone in that band of blonds: Hal Cooper, Betty’s long-lost brother, or maybe even Betty herself. (“Dark Betty” is scary, guys.) Your guess is as good as ours.

And a new Reddit theory builds on this idea—that the Black Hood is a Cooper—but with a twist. According to a user named -lCrackers, the Black Hood is Betty’s biological mother…but that woman isn’t Alice Cooper. It’s Penny Peabody, the shady lawyer for the Southside Serpents. Yes, you’re reading this correctly. We now have a new theory which posits Penny Peabody as both Betty’s biological mother and the Black Hood. That’s two bombshell reveals at once.

But the evidence is pretty strong. -lCrackers suggests that Alice and Penny are half-sisters, and that Alice took Betty away from Penny when she was born because she didn’t think she could handle a child. Fast-forward to roughly 17 years later: Penny’s now grown up and seeking revenge on Alice for taking Betty and for painting the South Side as this criminal hotbed. She wants to show everyone the North Side is just as gross and corrupt—hence why she became the Black Hood.

If Penny’s been on the South Side this entire time, it’s entirely plausible that she observed Betty from afar, which would explain how she knows so much about her. And because Penny is paid in “favors,” she has the connections to make this Black Hood operation seamless. Perhaps she’s hiring people to do the dirty work—the killing—for her, and she’s just pulling the strings. That would explain why those two Black Hood letters had different handwriting: one came from Penny, and the other from one of her accomplices.

It’s an ironclad theory, to be honest. Penny has both the motive and the means to be the Black Hood. Also, she looks just like Betty. This is, hands down, the most convincing hypothesis we’ve come across thus far—and the one most likely to be true. Of course, we’ll have to keep watching to find out for sure.

This 'Riverdale' Theory About the Black Hood's Identity Seems Right After Last Night's Episode

The main focus of Riverdale this season is unmasking the Black Hood, a serial killer with a very sick, pointed obsession with Betty. Sure, the Black Hood is essentially “A” from Pretty Little Liars, but that doesn’t make him or her—or that stereotypical deep robot voice—any less terrifying. Listen, some tropes are effective no matter how many times you see them.

Here’s what we know about the Black Hood so far: This person has green eyes, knows a lot about Betty’s childhood, and is oddly self-righteous. Like, the Black Hood thinks he or she is doing Riverdale a favor by murdering people deemed “sinful.” These characteristics have most fans thinking the Black Hood is a member of the Cooper family. Maybe it’s Hal Cooper, Betty’s father, or her long-lost brother, who we learned about at the end of season one.

Both of these theories make sense—the green eyes don’t lie—but something that happened on last night’s episode points things in a different direction. If you remember, Betty published a story unveiling the Sugar Man as Mr. Phillips, Jughead’s South Side High English teacher, which led to his arrest. Mr. Phillips was sleeping in his jail cell when he received a visit from the Black Hood, who shot him at point-blank range. This means the Black Hood somehow has access to the local jail; after all, random people can’t just go walking in there. Who has that kind of power, you ask? Well, only one person comes to mind: Sheriff Tom Keller, Kevin’s dad.

Yes, my friends, it’s entirely plausible that Sheriff Keller, the man tasked with protecting Riverdale, is the one terrorizing it. The pieces fit: He has green-blue eyes, access to firearms, and a strong moral compass. Perhaps he grew frustrated at the fact crime was still happening despite his best, legal efforts and decided to take things off script. And because Kevin has been friends with Betty since they were kids, he probably knows a lot about her. Several of these points are why some fans think Kevin is the Black Hood—but he, logically, doesn’t have the power to just pop into the jail whenever he wants. Sheriff Keller, however, does.

Many Riverdale fans on Twitter agree with this theory. Here are just a few:

Can you imagine if this is true? Kevin would be shook for years—and he doesn’t deserve to go through that. He’s too perfect!

Looks like we’ll have to keep watching Riverdale, which airs Wednesdays at 10 P.M. on the CW, to find out.
