'Black Panther' Director Ryan Coogler Is Down to Make a Movie About the Women of Wakanda

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler just co-signed the movie of our dreams: At a panel during the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, he was asked if he’d be open to making a spinoff featuring the women of Wakanda. He was instantly into the idea—and made our hearts soar.

“Oh man,” Variety reports Coogler saying. “That would be amazing if the opportunity came up. They did it in the comic-book version.”

Someone please make this opportunity happen right now. As it’s been widely reported, Black Panther is the highest-grossing superhero film of all time, after it made more than $1.2 billion globally. A woman-centered spinoff would undoubtedly continue to crush records. Plus, it would give us another opportunity to root for the movie’s out-of-this-world female stars, who include Oscar winner and real-life saint Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright.

“We have these actresses who could easily carry their own movie,” Coogler said at the panel. “Some of them have before!”

Wright—who plays Shuri, the bad-ass and brilliant younger sister of King T’Challa—signaled she was all about the idea by adorably tweeting, “Ready big bro.”

The question of a spinoff came up at the panel when moderator Elvis Mitchell asked Coogler if the women of “Black Panther” were as important as the men. In addition to Shuri, the film features incredible female characters, like Nakia and Okoye. Coogler answered, “I think that you could argue that they’re more important in Wakanda. There’s a whole section of the film where T’Challa is out of the movie and you’re just following the women, and that’s one of my favorite parts of the movie. I didn’t expect that!”

A sequel does seem to be in the works, although we’re not sure which characters it would highlight. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said an interview with Entertainment Weekly that although he had “nothing specific to reveal,” another journey into Wakanda would come. We’re just crossing our fingers it focuses on Shuri and the rest of the power women—we’d be first in line for tickets.

Is Beyoncé Appearing on the 'Black Panther' Soundtrack? Fans Are Convinced

Beyoncé was not playing games with her fashion this weekend at the Grammys. She wore not one, not two, but three outfits over the course of the weekend that slew her fans to their core. And there was a common thread among all of them. For one, all three dresses she chose were black, but the tie was deeper than that: They each referenced, in some way, black panthers.

Let’s start with this first outfit, below. Flip through the post, and you’ll notice her earrings are shaped like panthers.

Now, for the look she rocked at the Clive Davis pre-Grammy gala on Saturday night: It’s head-to-toe black, with a curve silhouette that seems very pantherlike.

And, of course, there was this look from the actual Grammys ceremony. Beyoncé paired her all-black dress with a clutch shaped like—you guessed it—a panther.

So what does this all mean? Possibly nothing, but Beyoncé doesn’t do anything by accident. She gave several hints about Lemonade before it dropped, and fans think she’s suggesting something with these looks too: that she’s involved with the new Black Panther film in some way.

It makes sense, when you think about it. First off, the timing is right: Black Panther hits theaters nationwide on February 16, so Bey’s looks might be subtle ramp-up for the film. That said, it could also be a reference to the Black Panther Party: Bey reportedly paid homage to the Black Panthers during her 2016 Super Bowl halftime show appearance.

But fans think this means Bey makes an appearance on the upcoming Black Panther soundtrack, specifically, because the track list, save for two songs, is still unknown. Maybe Queen B appears multiple times on the soundtrack, like Kendrick Lamar. It’s certainly possible.

Here are just some of the fans who’re convinced Beyoncé is sending a Marvel message with her looks:

Fingers crossed this is true. There are a million reasons why this would be amazing, but the number-one is that we desperately need new Beyoncé music.

The New Season of 'Black Mirror' Features Only Female Leads

If you haven’t watched Black Mirror, now is a very good time to start: The British show, now on Netflix, has four incredible seasons on the streaming platform. If you haven’t seen it, it’s set in a not-so-unrealistic future, usually with varying levels of hits-far-too-close-to-home dystopia commenting on things like dating, marriage, and, of course, governments gone awry—a Twilight Zone for 2017. And each episode is a different story with different characters, like a mini-movie each time. The six-episode fourth season, which hit Netflix on Friday, has a twist, though: every single one of the season’s main characters is a woman.

Of course, if every character was a man, this wouldn’t exactly be news. But the stats still show that women are a minority when it comes to owning lead roles on television: in the U.K., where Black Mirror hails from, of the top 50 television shows, just 18 have female protagonists. In the U.S., only 42 percent of shows have women playing a “major character,” according to a study covering 2016-2017 shows from the Center for the Study of Women in Film and Television at San Diego State University.

Apparently casting a woman for each lead role wasn’t the intention—it just kind of happened, according to The Hollywood Reporter, who talked to Annabel Jones, a co-executive producer on the show (alongside creator Charlie Brooker).

“Charlie and I don’t tend to think about the stories that way. Sometimes, it just comes out,” Jones told the publication. “But it’s great — great! — that they’re all strong female protagonists. I think what’s lovely about the show is that it’s not a strident statement. It’s more: Why not? We don’t even think about it from a gender perspective and I hope that’s progress. It’s more that we explore the best story and the best way to tell it.”

If that weren’t enough to get Black Mirror on your watchlist, the new season sounds empowering AF: “Whether they are survivors in the traditional sense or not, they each reach a moment in their story where they are challenged to reclaim their power, stand up to some level of tyranny or fight to write their own ending,” writes The Hollywood Reporter. Sounds like just what we need to close out 2017.
