Why Hallmark Christmas Movies Feature the Same Women Every Year

Peete echoes this sentiment—”Hallmark Channel is very family oriented, so they have respect for us hard-working mamas”—as does Loughlin. “Bill Abbott, the head of the network, and Michelle Vicary [EVP of programming and publicity at Hallmark] are parents,” she says. “They have children. They really understand if you say, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t make it to this thing’ or ‘I can’t do this’ or ‘I have to leave set because it’s my kid’s birthday.’ They’re like, ‘Yup, go. You do whatever you need to do.’ They’re so understanding about kids and obligations that parents have in regards to their children. “

Accommodating the Hallmark actors who are mothers is a priority for Abbott. (He says three-quarters of the employees in his direct reports are women, and approximately half of them have children.) “We owe it to our employees who give so much, and our talent who give so much,” he says. “It’s more than just a job. It’s a relationship—it’s a long-term relationship. It fits our brand and it fits our style and it just works for us, and we are very focused on it.”

Of course, the actors without children have different reasons for staying in business with the network. Witt, for example, enjoys balancing her darker work (like on The Walking Dead) with Hallmark’s lighter fare.

“It’s fun to come out with a movie where every day you have a happy ending and it’s a sweet love story [or] family story,” she says. “I just spent the last week in winter clothes and people I really enjoy working with and Christmas lights everywhere and snow and gingerbread cookies and vegan eggnog. There’s very little heaviness on my psyche right now.”

Witt says the more uplifting work makes Hallmark’s movie sets really enjoyable—which is another reason she keeps coming back for more. “There’s something about the lighter material that I think lends itself to everyone just having so much fun,” she says. “If you’re making a movie about something really dark, it does something different to your psyche. You’ll get home from work and try to shake it off, and you’re kind of in a darker place.”

Loughlin agrees. “If you’re dealing with disturbing content, that affects everybody on set,” she says. “With Hallmark, we’re not going to the dark side, so these sets tend to be super lighthearted and more fun because the content we’re working on is lighthearted and fun.”

Lizzo Is Time's Entertainer Of The Year

Lizzo was named Time Magazine’s Entertainer of the Year on Wednesday.

Do we even need to ask how she’s feelin’?

In the same news cycle that featured the 31-year-old singer twerking in a thong at a Lakers game and releasing a music video that literally trumpets black excellence, Lizzo earned a top spot in Time’s annual Person of the Year rankings.

Her cover image, shot by Paola Kudacki, is instantly iconic. It’s Lizzo in her truest form which I like to think is part disco ball and part deity. Her voluminous, sparkling Mary Katrantzou gown (or may we respectfully call it by its true name, sack of pure glamour?) evokes the globe, wholeness, oneness, eternity! Her arms are in the gesture Eva Peron would do if she took up yoga. Her pointed kitten heel has been flicked off, like Lizzo is Cinderella and we’re all a bunch of Prince Charming’s in hot pursuit.

The accompanying article about her, by essayist Samantha Irby, is filled with the instant-jolt-of-empowerment quotes Lizzo has a genius for tossing off. “I think it’s healthy to have a relationship with your naked body, even if no one ever sees it,” she says. “But I’ve always felt the need to share it.” In the piece, she talks about the vulnerability of experiencing fame in an especially highly scrutinized body. “I need to fall back in love with my body,” she proclaims, before adding, re: fame, “I just want to go to the farmer’s market.”

We will go to the farmer’s market with you, Lizzo. We will fetch you organic beeswax candles and fend off rabid fans with bundles of fresh leeks. We will carry your reusable tote bag.

She also tries to answer the question we’ve all been asking our therapists—where has Lizzo been all our lives? Why did she seem to appear out of nowhere, when she clearly has the star power of a major celebrity? Who has been keeping her from us?

Spotify Wrapped 2019: How to Find Out Your Most-Played Songs of the Year

You’ve probably noticed your friends starting to share their top Spotify songs of 2019, along with their other streaming habits, courtesy of Spotify Wrapped. It is, after all, the time of year when your feed is inundated with “best of” lists, summing up the last 12 months of entertainment and culture. And with 2019, we also happen to be at the end of a decade, which means even more content.

These lists are certainly fun to read (and argue about), but what we love even more is looking back at our own lives over the course of the past year—or ten. So how are your friends finding these fun facts and graphics about their music stats?

There are a couple of ways to do it. and they both involve Spotify Wrapped. First, you can simply go to spotify.com/wrapped and log in to your account. You’ll be greeted with all your streaming trends from the past year and more. “This year, your Wrapped will include the songs, albums, artists, and podcasts you discovered throughout 2019, plus the artists you streamed the most throughout the decade on Spotify. It’s ‘Wrapped’ the way you love it—but with more nostalgia than ever before,” the company said in a release.

For the first time this year, you’ll also be able to access Wrapped via your Spotify app. Once there, you’ll discover your top artist, top song through each season, top podcasts, genres, and total minutes streamed in 2019. Plus the results are easily shareable to your social media feeds, including Instagram Stories, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter. You can also instantly add your most played songs to your library, if for some reason they’re not already there.

Perhaps the most shocking information will come via exactly how many minutes you’ve spent streaming Spotify in 2019—even if you want to keep that information to yourself.

Next up after #SpotifyWrapped in the year-end generator line will surely be the Instagram #TopNine, right?

Latinas Have the Last ‘Equal Pay Day’ of the Year. These Women Want to Do Something About That.

It’s not quite a cause for celebration, but November 20 is Latina Equal Pay Day, which marks the point in 2019 at which the average Latina’s wages at last equal what a white man earned in 2018.

For women overall, it takes about 16 months to make what a white man makes in 12. But for Latina women—whose “Equal Pay Day” is the last observed of the year—that number is much higher. It takes nearly 23 months to even out, with Latina’s typically earning only 54 cents for every dollar a man makes. To mark this…inauspicious occasion, Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign founder Meena Harris—who spoke with Alicia Garza for Black Women’s Equal Pay Day—sat down with Jen Zeano, creator of the popular JZD Latina Power shirt line and founder of her own brand, Jen Zeano Designs. Here, Harris and Zeano chat about their new collaboration, Phenomenal x Latina Power, what it means to be a queer entrepreneur, and the strength she finds in her Latinx community.

Meena Harris: Latina Equal Pay Day is not a celebratory day. It’s about recognizing that we still have have a very long way to go in terms of pay equity. Latinas experience the widest gap. What does equal pay and equity mean to you?

Jen Zeano: It means being able to close those gaps. For so long we’ve kind of settled into the fact that we are never going to get paid equally to our white counterparts. But now that I’m a business owner, I’ve surrounded myself with more Latina business owners. Also people working in the field, like attorney or nurses, that are not getting paid what they should be getting paid. We have to do more. Growing awareness of [the gap] is one of the most important things. A lot of people don’t even know that we get paid so much less, and that it makes it so hard for us to create that generational wealth that everybody so deeply craves.

We have to work 10 times harder to try to get [generational wealth] and create these new normals for our families. One of my biggest goals in life is that I want to be one the last generations [in my family] that struggles to pay rent. We shouldn’t struggle to pay rent but unfortunately, so many in our community struggle to pay rent every month. Getting out of that, I feel, is one of the most important things that we have to do.

Harris: One thing that is really important to the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign is intersectionality. Recognizing that for folks who have multiple identities, it can mean layered discrimination. In your case, you’re not just Latina, you are also LGBTQ. I think it’s amazing that you and your wife, Veronica Zeano, are building this company together. What is it like being a queer Latinx entrepreneur and building a business with your wife?

Zeano: It’s so much. I feel like being a queer Latina in itself has been a journey in a way. When I first came out to my parents, they weren’t super understanding. It took a couple of months for them to come around. And my wife hasn’t had a relationship with her parents in more than five years because they couldn’t come to terms with the fact that she’s married to a woman.

We have been so blessed that our community has been so supportive. We’ve been super open about it. People that follow us and are familiar with our brand know that it’s both of us running the business and they have been super super supportive and always amazing. I surround myself with people who are also queer Latinas. So that always creates a really empowering community. But it’s also been really difficult because when you have to meet potential business partners, or you have to meet people you want to collaborate with, it’s almost like you always have to “come out.” You never really know how they are going to take it.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Aren't Spending Christmas With the Queen This Year

After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry opened up about the hardships of public life in a recent documentary, sources speculated that the couple was considering taking an extended family break. Now, it looks like that quality time is coinciding with the holidays: On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that Markle and Prince Harry won’t spend Christmas with Queen Elizabeth II this year; instead, they’ll be hanging out with their baby and Markle’s mother Doria Ragland.

Royal reporters tweeted a statement issued by the spokesperson that read, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month. Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, [the couple] will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria.” While people may try to spin this into drama about the rumored riff between Prince Harry and Prince William, or the media scrutiny Meghan Markle discussed, the spokesperson made sure to emphasize that this is totally within protocol and it’s been approved by the queen herself. “This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen,” she added.

It’s also worth remembering that it’s normal for the royals to spend Christmas away from Buckingham Palace. Prince William and Kate Middleton spent the holidays with Middleton’s parents in Bucklebury in 2012 and 2016, and as the statement reminds everyone, Markle and Prince Harry were at Sandringham the last couple of years. The message doesn’t specify where exactly the Sussexes will be, so it’s unclear if Ragland will come to the U.K. But we’re crossing our fingers that maybe this extended family time means Markle, Harry, and Archie will come stateside.

Charlize Theron's Speech at Glamour's 2019 Women of the Year Awards Is Required Reading

Charlize Theron gave an incredible speech when she accepted her Glamour 2019 Women of the Year Award on Monday night—and it should be required reading.

The actor, who’s set to appear in the upcoming movie Bombshell, took the stage at New York’s Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on Monday, November 11.

She was introduced by her Bombshell co-star Kate McKinnon, who told the audience about the first time she was captivated by Theron—her Oscar-winning performance in Monster—and what it was like to share the stage with her on Saturday Night Live.

“For some reason I was asked to introduce Charlize Theron at this Glamour event, which is sort of like a bridge troll being asked to introduce a Queen, but trolls love snacks and green rooms, so here I am,” McKinnon joked. “What can be said about Charlize Theron, a person whose Helen of Troy-esque, ship-launching face, is absolutely the least remarkable thing about her? A person whose real-life bad-assness makes her character from Mad Max: Fury Road look lazy and selfish? A person so grand that when you meet her, it only feels right to get on the floor—but who is so nice and normal that you end up just kind of doing a little curtsey?”

She continued, “In my mind, the finest screen performance of all time is Charlize in Monster. A performance filled with so much compassion and so much humanity that I found myself thinking 1) my god, the pain of so many women in this world is so overwhelming that I can’t even move; and 2) my god I want someone to make out with me outside of a roller rink. Charlize’s finest screen work came in 2014, of course, when we did an SNL sketch together about two ladies working in a cat shelter, a sketch that would go on to win a BAFTA. But seriously, she kind of swooped in and turned a bunch of cat jokes into a fully-fleshed out drama dynamic and for that I owe her so much.”

McKinnon concluded with insight into their time together filming Bombshell. “What I owe her everything for is getting to be a part of her latest incredibly important film, Bombshell. Where she not only transforms into Megyn Kelly but she embodies every nuance of a horrifying and horrifyingly common situation, which is the Goliath that women face when they choose to come forward about sexual harassment. But these kinds of revelatory roles have become par for the course for Charlize. In whatever she does, she always stands for bravery, risk and making tough choices. She does it as an actor, as a producer, an activist, a philanthropist, and a mom. And that’s what makes her a Glamour Woman of the Year.”

Naturally, Theron’s speech was as inspiring as her work. Read it, below:

“What a night. I’m a mess, there’s nothing ‘glamour’ about my face anymore. You all fucked me up in the most beautiful way. Thank you, Kate for doing this. For asking me to be your cat lady. It’s been a privilege to work with someone so incredibly funny and talented. That is until the day you do an impression of me in a celebrity game show sketch…then you’re dead to me.

I also want to thank Sam and everybody from Glamour. It is an incredible honor to be named Woman of the Year when this is the kind of company I get to keep. Ava, Yara, Megan, Tory, Margaret, Greta, Erika, Lucia, Andrea, Mayra,…a thousand times I say yes, every time.
