Thanks to Kanye West, #IfSlaveryWasAChoice Is Trending on Twitter—And It's Comedy Gold

During the past week, we’ve held our breath as we’ve scrolled through our Twitter timelines, fearful of once again being subjected to the verbal antics of Kanye West. From his calling Donald Trump his “brother” to his praising problematic far-right talking head Candace Owens, let’s just say it’s been a week. Now, in true Sunken Place fashion, just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, West sat down with TMZ Live Tuesday to declare that 400 years of slavery was “a choice.”

Kanye was, obviously, gathered up for his reductive remarks, first by TMZ Newsroom staffer Van Lathan, who told the rapper “I think what you’re doing right now is actually the absence of thought.”

It didn’t take long for Twitter to jump on board, highlighting the sheer absurdity of Kanye’s words in hilarious ways (let’s be real—Black Twitter can find a way to bring humor to almost any situation—I’m sure we’ll tweet through the apocalypse). Late Tuesday night the hashtag #IfSlaveryWasAChoice took over our Twitter feeds, and let’s just say, it’s the laugh we all needed. Behold:

Nope.. I got plans..

What better way to enjoy the sweltering cotton fields than with some tunes from Mr. West himself?

Because hey, who doesn’t love a good talent show?

Watch yourself.

Ah, yeah, gonna have to pass on that one. $15 an hour or nothing.

When Massa clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed..

West has since tried to clarify his statement by comparing himself to both Harriet Tubman and Nat Turner. We’ll just let you ponder that one.

Completely canceling Mr. West this week has been a tough pill to swallow, but it’s comforting to know that we can always count on Twitter to lessen the blow of our faves’ sorely disappointing us.

It’s unfortunate that the man who once took to national television to declare that “George Bush doesn’t like Black people” after Hurricane Katrina in 2006 is now blaming that same community for 400 years of oppression, and journalist and academic Marc Lamont Hill said it best when he joined the discussion last night: There has NEVER been a moment in history when Black people didn’t resist slavery.

Kim Kardashian Roasted Kanye West on Twitter and Now Chrissy Teigen's Involved

Can you name anybody savvier at managing a public persona than Kim Kardashian? OK, fine, anybody savvier than Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian. No? Exactly. Kim is so good, she even knows when she should clarify her own jokes.

Case in point: On Tuesday afternoon, her husband, Kanye West, went on a bit of an unfiltered tweeting spree now that he’s back on Twitter, with one of his tweets catching the eye of his partner. “Sometimes you have to get rid of everything,” West tweeted, among other helpful sentiments such as “try to avoid any contractual situation where you are held back from your ideas,” and “distraction is the enemy of vision.” (It’s true! Great advice.)

“Wait…EVERYTHING?!?!?! ??” Kardashian responded. It was clearly meant to be a one-and-done joke until her next social media musing about, we don’t know, Kimoji, but Chrissy Teigen joined the conversation to keep the good times going: “I have an air mattress here and I have been itching to bust it out if you need.”

“Might need some more for the kids? Just not clear on what everything really means. I need clarity,” Kardashian retorted. “Thanks for being such a good friend. Maybe John can call and inquire? But maybe he means friends too? This is confusing.”

Now, obviously this is just banter among friends that’s meant to be humorous, but since tabloids are, well, tabloids, and haters gonna hate, hate, hate, Kardashian made a point of defending her sense of humor: “For anyone who has absolutely no humor in their soul please know my tweets are a joke and I will die laughing if I see blogs and media really think I am being serious. So don’t even try it.”

And that, my friends, is today’s edition of Keeping Up With the Kardashians‘s Social Media.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Just Revealed Their Daughter's Name

Despite rumors otherwise, we now know for sure that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West one-thousand percent did not name their daughter after Louis Vuitton. So what did they name her, you ask? After Kanye’s hometown: Chicago. Yes, the newest member of the Kardashian-West family is officially Chicago West. Kim revealed her daughter’s name on her app today, along with Chicago’s birthday (January 15, 2018), time of birth (12:47 A.M.), and birth weight (7 pounds, 6 ounces). She then followed that up with a tweet that seems to indicate Chicago will have a nickname: “North, Saint & Chi.”

“Kanye and I are happy to announce the arrival of our healthy, beautiful baby girl,” Kim wrote on her website Monday to announce Chicago’s birth. “We are incredibly grateful to our surrogate who made our dreams come true with the greatest gift one could give and to our wonderful doctors and nurses for their special care. North and Saint are especially thrilled to welcome their baby sister.”

Chicago has only been in the world a few days, but she’s already caused quite a stir. (She does share Kim and Kanye’s genes, after all.) After Kim posted the Louis Vuitton symbols on Instagram earlier this week, many fans speculated that the child was named after the fashion brand. But that’s relatively harmless compared to the theories that have been floating around that Kylie Jenner, who is reportedly pregnant, was Kim’s surrogate or gestational carrier. Kim dismissed those rumors, though, in a blog post yesterday about her choice to use a gestational carrier through an agency.

“It’s not for everyone, but I absolutely love my gestational carrier and this was the best experience I’ve ever had,” she wrote. “The connection with our baby came instantly and it’s as if she was with us the whole time.”

Kanye West Sent Kim Kardashian an Email Asking Her to Stop Wearing Big Sunglasses

Anyone who picked up a tabloid in the aughts knows that oversize sunglasses were once the great staple accessory in celebrity fashion—for reality stars, especially. (The more prominent and bedazzled the designer logo, the better.) But of late, the First Family of E!, spearheaded by Kim Kardashian, has abandoned these once-iconic, face-obscuring frames in favor of even more nostalgic eyewear: teeny-tiny, 90s inspired sunglasses. And apparently, this eyewear switch-up can be traced back to one Kanye West.

Per People, Kardashian received an e-mail from West, re: her sunglasses, which she recalled on a recent episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. (Apparently, these sartorial memos are a regular occurrence, but that’s something to be fleshed out in a later season.) In this particular message, he had one very specific request for his wife: The oversize sunnies Kim was once known for need. To. Go.

“[Kanye] sent me a whole email like, ‘You cannot wear big glasses anymore,” Kim explained. “He sent me like, millions of ’90s photos with tiny little glasses.” Per The Cut‘s estimations, this episode was likely filmed in early May.

Of course, we’d already noticed this eyewear trend long before the episode aired—beyond Kim’s wardrobe to her entire family, and then the fashion world at large. (Bella Hadid is rarely seen without some tiny glasses perched on, and cool teen/Kardashian fan Millie Bobby Brown has worn a similarly small pair with her best outfits.) Kanye’s style influence goes even further when it comes to Kim: according to People, she was also wearing an outfit entirely picked out by the musician and designer—which, yes, included those little glasses—to explain this new norm on the show.

West’s influence on Kardashian’s style has been well-documented. He’s styled outfits from his label, Yeezy, for Kim for years; in the past few months, we’ve mainly seen her photographed in clothing exclusively from his line. And back at the start of their relationship, we all watched as Kanye cleaned out Kim’s closet on national television, and made her cry in the process. Maybe don’t throw out that collection of oversized sunnies just yet, Kim—you never know when they’ll be back.

Kim Kardashian West Says She's Called Her Lawyers on Behalf of Cyntoia Brown

Kim Kardashian West has called her attorneys on behalf of Cyntoia Brown, a woman who was sentenced to life in prison at the age of 16 because she killed the man who bought her as a trafficked child sex slave.

On Tuesday the star posted a tweet drawing attention to the case of Cyntoia Brown, who was convicted in 2004. She included a screenshot of a text post that summarized Brown’s story and wrote, “The system has failed. It’s heart breaking to see a young girl sex trafficked then when she has the courage to fight back is jailed for life! We have to do better and do what’s right. I’ve called my attorneys yesterday to see what can be done to fix this.”

The text post itself read, “Imagine at the age of 16 being sex-trafficked by a pimp called ‘cut-throat.’ After days of being repeatedly drugged and raped by different men you were purchased by a 43 year old child predator who took you to his home to use you for sex. You end up finding enough courage to fight back and shoot and kill him. Your [sic] arrested as result tried and convicted as an adult and sentenced to life in prison. This is the story of Cyntoia Brown. She will be eligible for parole when is 69 years old.”

Hours prior, Rihanna also uploaded a screenshot of the same text post to her Instagram. “Did we somehow change the definition of #JUSTICE along the way??” she wrote. “cause….. Something is horribly wrong when the system enables these rapists and the victim is thrown away for life! To each of you responsible for this child’s sentence I hope to God you don’t have children, because this could be your daughter being punished for punishing already!”

According to Newsweek, the text post in question originated from a 2011 documentary by director Daniel Birman about Brown’s story. As the text post reads, Brown was only 16 (legally a child) when she killed 43-year-old Johnny Mitchell Allen, who solicited her for sex. After Allen took her back to his home, she shot and killed him. At her trial Brown did not deny killing Allen and was sentenced to life on prostitution and murder charges despite her team’s efforts to use her lifetime of emotional, physical, and sexual trauma as a defense.

Birman’s documentary was influential enough to change Tennessee laws so that minors could not be charged for prostitution and would be considered victims of sex trafficking, Newsweek reports. However, the new laws do not retroactively apply to Brown, who is now 29 and has spent 13 years in prison. She completed her associate’s degree in prison, is working on her bachelor’s, and consults on an unpaid basis for the juvenile justice system. It will be another 51 years before Brown is eligible for parole.

It is not yet evident why celebrities like Rihanna and Kim Kardashian West as well as T.I. are speaking up now about Brown, but a local news story was published on Thursday, which may have brought new, viral attention to the case.

Kim Kardashian West Just Accidentally Revealed She's Having a Baby Girl

Over the weekend, Kim Kardashian West hosted one of the most extravagant baby showers the world may have ever seen. (Would you expect any less?) The party was to celebrate Kim and Kanye’s third baby, who is reportedly expected to arrive in December via surrogate. And when Kim sat down with Ellen Degeneres yesterday to talk about the “Tea for 3”-themed shower, she accidentally revealed some big news we’re not sure she was planning on sharing.

“We had a baby shower over the weekend, and I thought, ‘You know, I really do want to have a baby shower because I want [North] to feel that something’s coming and for her to really understand it’,” she told Ellen. “So people brought toys and gifts and she was opening them all up the next day. She said, ‘Mum, since baby sister’s not here, I think I need all of the toys in my room and I’ll play with them and just make sure they’re all OK for baby sister.’” To which Ellen responded, “You just told us it’s a girl!” Kim replied, “Yes, it is, it’s a girl.”

We’re so excited to meet Kim and Kanye’s baby girl in possibly just one short month. This journey hasn’t always been easy for Kim: She recently revealed to Entertainment Tonight that it was difficult for her not to carry her baby. “Anyone that says or thinks it is just the easy way out is just completely wrong,” she said. “I think it is so much harder to go through it this way, because you are not really in control. And, you know, obviously you pick someone that you completely trust and that you have a good bond and relationship with, but it is still…knowing that I was able to carry my first two babies and not, you know, my baby now, it’s hard for me. So it’s definitely a harder experience than I anticipated, just in the control area.”

One area where Kim does have total control, though? The naming process—and we’re eagerly awaiting to see what she chooses for Baby No. 3!
