So This Explains Why Diane von Furstenberg Dressed as the Statue of Liberty for the 2019 Met Gala

Every year the Met Gala brings the worlds of Hollywood and fashion together in spectacular fashion with the stars, designers, and glam squads all bringing their A-games to the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year’s theme of “Fashion: Notes on Camp” certainly delivered with over-the-top creations and performance art (thanks, Lady Gaga!) on the pink carpet.

Diane von Furstenberg arrived dressed as the Statue of Liberty, with her own face on her gown. It was camp, but also appropriate given that both are iconic New York women. But there was actually a deeper meaning to DVF’s choice. The designer and philanthropist has helped to raise $100 million for the new Statue of Liberty museum, which opens on May 16.

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, which was created in 1982 to raise funds to restore the Statue, recruited DVF to their board to help bring in the money needed for the massive project. DVF was hesitant to join the organization’s board at first. But the moment she decided it was a role she had to take on was when Stephen Briganti, the president of the foundation, underlined a passage from her book, The Woman I Wanted to Be. “My mother was a survivor of concentration camps for 13 months in 1944,” von Furstenberg said. “I was born after and she wrote me a note, which I included in my book. It said, ‘God saved me so that I can give you life. By giving you life, you gave me my life back. You are my torch of freedom.’ Stephen underlined that and said, see your mother said you are the torch of freedom, you have to do this.”

DVF was so successful in her role that the Foundation’s vice president and chief advancement officer, Richard Flood, called her the “godmother of Lady Liberty” during a press event this week. The designer said that she isn’t typically good at fundraising, but the Statue of Liberty “was an easy sell…somehow when you talk about it, everyone has a story, everyone has someone they want to honor.”

In addition to fundraising, DVF connected the foundation with with Apple to bring the experience to people who don’t have the opportunity to visit in person. “One day I’m sitting next to [Apple’s] Tim Cook and I start to mention the Statue of Liberty and he had never been,” DVF explained at the press gathering. “So I arranged for him to go and he was very much in awe. Then I said to him, ‘I really would like people to have an Apple experience.'” And thus, a great idea was born.

In conjunction with the opening of the new Statue of Liberty Museum, they are launching an augmented reality (AR) app, along with a podcast mini series. “It’s pretty amazing,” von Furstenberg said. “With this app, everybody in the world with an Apple phone or iPad will have access to the museum, the history. The goal was to give this experience, the opening of this museum, to a billion people. So it will be the biggest opening of a museum ever.”

A look at the new augmented reality app that gives users a unique look at the Statue of Liberty.

Apple

The app is packed with cool features like a torch panorama where you can experience the view of the island and New York City from the vantage point of Lady Liberty’s torch from sunrise to sunset. (Actual visitors haven’t been able to do this IRL sine 1916.) Users can also explore the statue itself, as well as a look inside the iron tower structure created by Gustav Eiffel. A historical time-lapse function allows you to see the evolution of the Manhattan skyline over the past 200 years. It’s packed with so much incredible historical knowledge and packaged with the most modern technology available—a pretty incredible combo. (Download it here.)

Kat Von D's Incredible Wedding Dress Is Proof Brides Don't Have to Wear White

Usually, wedding dresses for brides getting married in Western-style ceremonies tend to be white, ivory, or off-white—and that’s great! They’re very, very pretty. But brides looking for something a little different can take inspiration from Kat Von D, who held a wedding celebration on Sunday with the Cholo-goth Prayers musician Rafael Reyes (a.k.a. Leafar Seyer). (The two actually got hitched in February.) The theme of the day, according to what’s embossed on her (incredible) wedding invites, seems to be “en vida y en muerte,” or “in life and in death.” And the color of the day? Bold blood red—right down to her dress.

The gown, which seems to have been custom-designed by Adolfo Sanchez, couldn’t be more her: After all, the tattoo artist and makeup mogul is known for a goth-y vibe that meets retro burlesque and pin-up for a truly fierce lewk. And red symbolizes luck and auspiciousness in some cultures, which couldn’t be better for kicking off a marriage (it also seems to be one of her favorite colors to wear). While we’re pretty sure no one was expecting a traditional wedding, this whole lewk is proof that brides shouldn’t be afraid to do something a little—or, hey, a lot—different on their own big days, whether it’s a red dress or something else entirely.

On Saturday, Von D—who’s also expecting a son with Reyes—posted a sweet Instagram with some thoughts about her impending wedding. Looking back, the bright red carnation was definitely a hint.

“Such a beautifully emotional day today. Tomorrow, @prayers and I will have our wedding ceremony for our close friends + family. This has been the sweetest, most stress-free experience where we continuosly [sic] fell in love with each other all over again with each day counting down. This is a photo of 3 carnations that our dear friends @majestyblack brought us tonight after our rehearsal and soundcheck. Red carnations are @prayers favourite flower, and the 3 represent him, me, and our sweet baby boy we are adding to our family. All I can say right now is that i am so grateful for my dear friends, and for my sweet husband. ❤️” she wrote.

Ready for the outfit? Here’s a first peek from her hubby.

And a peek from the man behind the gown, Sanchez himself:

We have ruffles; we have tulle; we have a romantic cathedral train. We also have a mind-blowing veil situation, as captured by her hairstylist.

Check out the full look on the mannequin:

Are you feeling the Maleficent vibes?

And what’s this? Vows on a heart-shaped platform under a dramatic canopy of gorgeous blooms? Amazing.

I mean, look at how the Beverly Hills Hotel was transformed. Apparently she sat down at the piano and serenaded the guests, too.

And, holy Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, these flowers.

Plus, peep her incredible invites.

And at the end of the day, each guest went home with custom Kat Von D lipstick in perfectly goth black—with large gold flecks (because, you know, it’s a party!).

Incredible.

PSA: Kat Von D's Studded Kiss Lipsticks Are Cheaper Than Ever Before

PHOTO: Instagram / @katvondbeauty

Prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of emotion. First, the good news: Kat Von D‘s Studded Kiss lipsticks are cheap now. Like, super cheap—drugstore-level cheap at $12, down from their usual $21. And this isn’t just the selective good news of a few shades being phased out, every single one of the bullet lipsticks is marked down 40 percent right now. Not to give you whiplash, but here comes the bad news: the lipsticks are on deep-cut sale because they’re about to be gone for good.

Did your heart drop? Mine plummeted just writing that, but I said rollercoaster, and I meant rollercoaster. So here’s the upswing: according to the clues KVD has posted on Instagram, the Studded Kiss collection will soon be back in a new and improved way. Nothing is confirmed yet, but KVD captioned a photo of the lipsticks with, “Our Studded Kiss army is getting a makeover! All 39 shades are 40% off at katvondbeauty.com! But don’t worry, we’re keeping the kick-ass component #makingroomfornewness #vegan.” From those two hashtags, we can draw hope that the lipsticks will soon be back in our hands, in a freshly vegan way.

The lipstick is one of Kat Von D’s signature items and comes in a range of finishes and colors that broke down barriers of what mainstream lipstick could look like. Green, copper, pitch black—these days those options are normal (or at least, more so), but KVD was one of the very first to have them available beyond Halloween season.

As a committed vegan and animal rights activist, she’s also one of the first already mainstream lines to pivot and commit to making an entirely vegan collection, so the move’s not entirely out of the blue. This summer she replaced her makeup brush line with all vegan ones, and they stayed as soft as ever (the bar was at “absentmindedly stroke them while you do other things” soft, so the stakes were high). So, when you consider the net positive, this is a good thing. We get lipstick for slashed prices, and less animals are affected in the long run. Ration your Studded Kiss for a few months (hopefully it’ll just be a few months), and life will return to normal. Maybe with one more $12 lipstick.
