Britney Spears and Colin Farrell Went to a Premiere Together 15 Years Ago Today, FYI


Very few moments in our culture actually achieve transcendence. When Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969, for example, the world stopped. As it did when Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. And when Barack Obama became the first Black president of the United States. These were watershed events: moments that changed the course of history, and life, as we know it. They’re documented in academic journals and books. Teenagers learn about them in high school—as they should, because it’s important for them to know who fought for their lives.

But there are two freedom fighters the history books are omitting: Britney Spears and Colin Farrell, who, on one night 15 years ago, did something so radical—so extreme—that American life changed for the better. They attended the premiere of the greatest film of our time, The Recruit.

It happened on January 28, 2003 at the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles. On that sacred ground, Spears and Farrell singlehandedly replenished American culture, which had been left barren by From Justin to Kelly and George W. Bush.

Their charity was silent but mighty. The maybe-couple didn’t really say anything on their red-carpet pilgrimage: Instead, they just smiled, stuck out their tongues, and later feverishly made out. That was enough to water the nation’s crops and reenergize the stock market, though. The Recruit went on to gross over $100 million at the box office, too, ensuring that white, straight men—the most underrepresented demographic in film, by far—could keep working in Hollywood. Britney Spears and Colin Farrell’s benevolent caresses did all of that.

The reason behind Farrell and Spears’ one-night mission trip is unknown. It’s unclear how they met or if they even officially dated. Either way, it just took this one moment for Americans to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Khloé Kardashian Is Officially Six Months Pregnant Today


It’s been less than two weeks since Khloé Kardashian confirmed her much-hyped pregnancy. Since then, we have been treated to not one, not two, but three baby-bump posts on Instagram. The first, a beautiful black-and-white tribute to The Bump being lovingly caressed by its mother and father, was the pregnancy announcement itself. The second was a Christmas post featuring Kardashian in a silver-tasseled jumpsuit. The third was posted today, and it contains an important baby update.

Not only does the post have Kardashian proudly showing off the child-to-be in a very glam outfit, but it also announces that, as of Tuesday, she is officially six months pregnant. That’s right—KoKo has been going to great lengths to keep the media and reality-TV aficionados on their toes about this pregnancy for just under half a year.

All these celebratory posts are so adorable that there’s no way we can be mad about the wait. (Not to mention it’s a huge privilege—not a right—for us to be privy to Kardashian’s pregnancy in the first place.) In the first photo uploaded on Tuesday, Kardashian captioned the photo, “Officially 6 months.” In the second, with the caption “Mom and Dad,” she is seen planting a kiss on longtime boyfriend (and the father of her baby-to-be) Tristan Thompson.

According to People, Thompson celebrated the six-month mark with a post of his own. On Sunday the father-to-be uploaded a Snapchat video of him and Kardashian celebrating New Year’s Eve. “For six months, you a fine six months, baby. I’ll tell you that,” he said to her on camera. With around three months of baby bump content to go, we’re not sure how they could get any cuter.

Today in Are You Kidding: Rick Perry Says Fossil Fuels Can Prevent Sexual Assault


When it comes to preventing sexual assault, Energy Secretary Rick Perry has a truly unprecedented suggestion: using more fossil fuels.

Perry’s head-scratcher of a suggestion came Thursday morning when he took part in an energy policy discussion hosted by Axios and NBC News. How exactly are fossil fuels supposed to prevent sexual assault? Let’s connect some dots.

First, even though he once forgot the department he heads existed, Perry has been adamantly pro-fossil fuels (and anti-climate change) throughout his short tenure as energy secretary. During Thursday’s panel, he rehashed a story from a recent trip to Africa, sharing an anecdote about a young girl who said electricity is important to her because she’d no longer have to “read by the light of a fire and have those fumes literally killing people.”

He then expanded upon the other benefits of expanding electricity that’s powered by fossil fuels.

“But also from the standpoint of sexual assault,” Perry explained. “When the lights are on, when you have light that shines, the righteousness, if you will, on those types of acts.”

Can we all agree that the idea that sexual assault can be stopped by simply turning on a few lights is both ludicrous and offensive to anyone who’s survived such an experience? And as noted by the good folks over at Splinter, Perry seems to be “a little confused” on the concept of “light” and how it pertains to the “righteousness” he speaks of (after all, there’s a “difference between literal and metaphorical ‘light’ here”).

What this seems to be is an instance of a cabinet member trying to capitalize on a pervasive societal issue—one that’s been at the forefront of public discourse due to the onslaught of sexual misconduct allegations against numerous men in positions of power, including his boss Donald Trump—and use it as a means to advance his own agenda. Perry has close ties to the oil industry and even sat on the board of the company contracted to build the Dakota Access Pipeline. Never mind that numerous companies are trying to bring more cost-effective solar-powered energy to Africa, Perry wants to keep this antiquated energy system going. And he made a case for it in the most cynical way possible.

What makes this even worse is how Perry’s asinine viewpoint on sexual assault is completely commonplace in the current administration. In September, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos recently rolled back protections for sexual assault survivors on college campuses. Last week, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that the administration thinks all the women who have brought sexual misconduct allegations against the President are liars. Perry’s comments are undoubtedly insulting, but the sad truth is they’re completely standard in Trump’s White House.

How Lingerie Has Evolved From the 1920s to Today


It might not surprise you to learn that lingerie in 2017 looks a little different than it did in the 1920s—OK, really different. Undergarments have evolved over the past century to highlight women’s bodies in different ways: with various materials, shapes, and patterns. And the decade-by-decade transformation is truly fascinating.

Back in the 1920s, it was all about a shapeless look, with thin fabrics like satin, silk, and later lace draped over the body. By the 1930s, a curvier silhouette became popular, so underwire and “falsies” were introduced to bring attention to the bust. Slips emerged as the lingerie of choice in the 1940s; while high-waisted bottoms were all the rage in the 1950s, as the hourglass figure became more desirable. The 1960s saw the rise of the matching set, many of which were embellished with trends of the time, such as ruffles and geometric patterns. By the 1970s, these got a lot more involved, with all-over fringe and tassel trims. Once we get into the 1980s, we see the influence of Madonna, with fishnets, leather, and other bold materials being woven into lingerie. By the 1990s, people were mixing and matching their separates, pairing leopard prints with silky yellow bras. (Very Spice Girls, if you ask us.) We saw more ready-to-wear trends bleed into the realm of lingerie in the 2000s, when Hervé Leger-style undergarments were prevalent. And now? Folks aren’t afraid to show off the details on their bras and undies.

Michelle Obama's 25th Anniversary Message to Barack Is Exactly What You Need Today

Leave it to Michelle and Barack Obama to be the glimmer of hope and happiness needed in the world today. On October 3, which marks the former First Couple’s 25th wedding anniversary, Michelle took to Twitter to celebrate her “best friend” and husband with a sweet message.

Sharing a black and white photo from their wedding, Michelle captioned the now-iconic pic, “Happy 25th anniversary @barackobama. A quarter of a century later, you’re still my best friend & the most extraordinary man I know. I ? you.” (Feel free to start a petition to declare the Obama’s wedding anniversary as a national holiday.) Naturally, the Internet began flooding Michelle’s mentions with adorable GIFs of the two hugging, kissing, and fist-bumping alongside messages of how missed they are in the White House. “Happy Anniversary to an exemplary couple. And y’all are adorable, too. ❤️” one Twitter user wrote.

Barack has yet to share his own message on social media for Michelle, but judging from past public displays of affection towards his wife, it’ll be worth the wait.

Barack and Michelle’s love story — which has been immortalized in the movie Southside With You — began when Michelle was assigned to mentor Barack at the law firm Sidley Austin in Chicago. In 1989, the future Obamas went on their first date to see the movie Do the Right Thing. (“He was trying to show me his sophisticated side by selecting an independent filmmaker,” Michelle teased in 2014, according to MTV.) And the rest is presidential history.

It’s far from the first time that the former POTUS and FLOTUS have had the country screaming “relationship goals.” The couple routinely take to social media on their anniversaries and Valentine’s Day to show each other some love. And just a few months ago, Michelle shared a birthday message to Barack that echoed Tuesday’s anniversary well wishes. “Another year older, but still the same phenomenal guy I married nearly 25 years ago,” she wrote at the time.

Since leaving the White House, the Obamas have traveled extensively, dropped their eldest daughter, Malia, [off at college](/story/barack-obama-admits-he-cried-after-dropping-malia-off-at-college, and are also considering a move to New York City.

Ten years ago today, television changed forever when The CW first introduced audiences to Cecily von Ziegesar’s cast of Upper East Siders. Yes, the premiere of Gossip Girl officially happened a full decade ago—and though we often think about the Manhattan-centric (and occasionally, Brooklyn-based) plot lines, love triangles, and other OTT events that capped nearly every episode in its six-season run, we’re still reeling from some of the series’ instantly-iconic fashion moments. Blair Waldorf gained a preppy-cult following for her capes, coats, and signature headbands; Serena van der Woodsen took the opposite route in free-spirited dresses and tangly bohemian jewelry.

It didn’t take long for viewers to become obsessed with each character’s signature style. So many designers contributed pieces to the show that former Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman told Fashionista earlier * this year: “Blair never repeated a headband in six seasons, and Serena never wore the same pair of shoes or carried the same bag.” Now that’s commitment to the look—and in the pre-Instagram age, no less.

As with all fashion, some looks have aged better than others. (We can’t see ourselves marching down Fifth Avenue in rainbow-bright tights anytime soon—sorry, Blair and fellow Constance girls.) Even ten years later, though, some of the gala gowns and tricked-out school uniforms worn by this very privileged group of New York teens still feel fresh today.
