*The Bachelorette* Season 14 Episode 9 Recap: Tears, Thailand, and Fantasy Suites

It’s fantasy suite time, Bachelorette fans, and you know what that means: deep talks, crying, and implied sex! Your regular recapper, Anna Moeslein, is still living her best life on vacation, so you have me for one more week!

Here’s what happened on tonight’s episode:

We’re in Thailand! Becca’s looking gorgeous, as always. She says Thailand’s one of the most “romantic” places she’s been to, which seems accurate—especially when you compare it to Richmond, Virginia, where they went a few weeks ago. Thailand > Richmond, Virginia any day of the week.

Becca says she’s “in love” with two men and “falling in love” with a third. Those first two are clearly Blake and Garrett. The third is Jason, which probably means shit’s about to go down with him tonight. Becca keeps talking about how obsessed she is with Garrett, so here’s a quick, little reminder about those bigoted Instagram posts he “liked” a few months back. Remember those? Because I sure do!

Blake, my favorite of the three, has the first date of the episode. He’s looking like a damn snack in that V-neck shirt, which Becca obviously realizes because she jumps on him like a spider monkey.

Blake and Becca go hiking on their date, which is 10 times worse than that tractor-tomato excursion from last week. Also, they can’t kiss and touch on this hike—a funny caveat seeing as how Blake says, “I can’t wait to kiss and touch” Becca before meeting her. My roommate and I clocked four times where they nudged bodies, ergo breaking the rules.

They then hang out with some monks. Blake doesn’t close his eyes when he’s suppose to close his eyes. He says he’s really taking in the “wisdom” from “this monk,” but something tells me he’s just thinking about making out with Becca. Justice for “this monk!” Becca and Blake nudge/break the rules again.

At dinner that night, Becca tells Blake it just keeps getting “better and better” with him and that she’s scared a bomb’s going to drop. (Apparently, Garrett’s Instagram “likes” aren’t bombs? There’s your second friendly reminder!) Blake says he’s falling in love with Becca and he can no longer ignore the fact she may have stronger connections with the other guys. Um…is he just now realizing this? Has he ever watched The Bachelorette? Becca doesn’t really do anything to ease his anxieties, either. She just talks about Arie. Stop talking about Arie!

This is the longest conversation on the planet. Blake says he’s not afraid to commit to Becca. “I’m the type of man who’s looking for a reason to stay, not a reason to go,” he says, literally, like he’s in some bad Matthew McConaughey rom-com. The line does the trick, though: Blake and Becca go to the fantasy suite. Sidebar: It looks so friggin’ humid where they are. I’m getting aggressive sweat stains on my shirt just looking at this weather.

Becca and Blake wake up in bed together and kiss. “I had so much fun last night,” Blake says, which for some reason makes me audibly cackle. Like…what a thing to say after the fantasy suite. They whisper some inaudible shit, and Becca says Blake is “in his head” today. He says he doesn’t want this to be the last time he wakes up with Becca. I…don’t think Blake knows how The Bachelorette works. Becca asks if there’s anything she can do to ease his nervousness, but the answer to that is clear: Pick Blake. My God, please pick Blake. He’s the only one left who 1) has good hair, and 2) isn’t a bigoted Instagram post liker. (And there, my friends, is your third friendly reminder.)

Date number two is Jason and his slicked-back hair. He’s wearing mint-green shorts: a plus, because that’s my favorite color. They go to the Sunday Market and explore, which actually sounds like a fun date. There’s no hiking or tractors involved! Jason’s consistently had the best dates.

And he’s so interesting, too. He’s actually taking in the Thailand sights and has genuine opinions. He’s so funny and breezy and charming—I hate that Becca would rather hang out with Garrett. Becca makes some comment about “the future”; she then immediately wants to take it back, though, because she says she can’t picture a future with Jason. She has a little meltdown about it—like, they film Becca putting her hair up in a ponytail (!!!) and talking to a producer (!!!). A Bachelorette with her hair up and a producer shown on camera?! The scandal of it all! Jason’s sweating, which is relatable.

Jason’s all in with Becca, and it’s beyond clear she’s not. You can see it in her eyes, and she barely says anything as Jason gushes on and on about her. Oof. This is actually devastating. Becca starts relaying the story to Jason about making a comment about the “future,” but she has to excuse herself. She realizes she sees a future with Garrett and Blake, but not Jason. Heartbreaking, but not surprising.

There’s a lot of heavy, nervous breathing and whispering. Becca then tells Jason how she’s feeling: that she sees more of a future with Blake and Garrett and she can’t put him through an overnight. Jason’s understanding, but of course sad. Jason says he came into this rooting for her happiness and that he’ll always root for her happiness, so he’s an actual angel. I can’t believe she’s kicking him out and keeping Garrett Bigoted Instagram Posts Yrigoyen!!!!!! Where the hell is the justice? In an odd twist, though, Jason’s never looked hotter to me than he does after getting dumped.

Becca’s now sobbing and saying, “What did I just do?” “What am I doing?” Uh, you’re dumping a dude on national television, that’s what! You’re on The Bachelorette! You are The Bachelorette. This is your job! Becca says Jason is one of the best guys she’s ever known and thinks she’s doing to him what Arie did to her. No comment on that.

Becca spends her morning crying and staring wistfully in her hotel room over Jason, but she can’t stay sad for long because Garett’s date is next. Whoopee! She jumps on Garrett, again, like a spider monkey when she sees him. That move is becoming her signature more than, “Let’s do the damn thing.” Their peaceful rafting date turns into a bit of a rager because there’s a Thai national holiday happening on the river. I’m so bored with them. They drink beers. Garrett’s shirt is annoying the crap out of me. He babbles on and on about his hometown date, and I only half listen. Becca wants to know if Garrett’s falling in love with him, which he obviously is. Blah blah blah, remember Garrett’s Instagrams, blah blah blah.

LOL, Becca makes some heavy-handed metaphor about how navigating the river today is like navigating a relationship. I’m so over them as a couple, which sucks because Garrett’s clearly a front-runner. Garrett says he’s worried about getting engaged and having it not work out—remember he was married once—and Becca stares at him blankly in response. Oh, and she says “yeah.” Becca eventually says she only wants Garrett to say things if he means them, and that they both know the gravity of this situation. Their chat ends with Garrett saying she’s in love with Becca, but whether or not this was a forced/manipulated confession is up in the air. His admission came after a super pointed conversation about love. But who cares about that? They go to the fantasy suite! (An aside from my roommate about this date: “I can’t wait for this shit to be over so we can watch Love Island.)

Garrett and Becca wake up to the sound of the rain. They kiss and say some lovey-dovey nonsense. I can’t with the fact their fantasy suite was in a literal tree house. Blake got a dope-ass suite! Becca blows Garrett a kiss goodbye. Garrett attempts to do the same and fails. He did, like, some bizarre drunk chef’s kiss instead. Garrett can’t blow kisses, apparently.

But plot twist: Jason comes back to Becca to talk about what happened. He starts opening up to Becca about the situation and holds back tears. He says his love for Becca is genuine. She straight-up admits to blindsiding Jason and compares herself to Arie. Even still, she doesn’t, like, take back what happened the before and says Jason deserves to find love. Insult to injury: Jason made Becca a damn scrapbook of all their good times together and gives it to her. All Becca says is some empty quote about how Jason’s an amazing man and that she’ll “look at [the scrapbook] later.” Ice cold! She sends him on his merry way, and starts looking at the scrapbook. Again, it changes nothing.

There’s a final rose ceremony (???) even though Jason’s gone, so this is just performative because Blake and Garrett are each getting roses. So, so, so dumb.

Becca explains the Jason situation to Blake and Garrett, and they just make doofy faces in response. I’m so annoyed. Garrett accepts his rose. Blake accepts his rose. I miss Jason. Heck, I miss Joe the Grocery Store Owner. Garrett makes some weird chest-puffing speech about how he’s excited to meet Becca’s parents right in front of Blake. Blake squints his eyes and says to himself over and over that Garrett and Becca don’t have what they have. I just want to give him a glass of wine. Anyway, they’re now going to the Maldives, and the dudes are going to meet Becca’s fam.

Next week: Men Tell All! Fingers crossed Chris Harrison asks Garrett about his bigoted Instagram posts! And then the finale! Becca cries and calls herself a “monster!”

Serena Williams' 'Played for the Moms' Speech at Wimbledon Had Royals Near Tears

Serena Williams lost to Angelique Kerber—a good friend and frequent rival—at Wimbledon on Saturday (6-3, 6-3) but that knock should by no means disqualify her from being the Greatest Of All Time.

Case in point? The gracious and beautiful speech she gave in the interview following her defeat, in which she kept her head held high and told moms watching, “I was playing for you today.”

As Williams headed off the court following Kerber’s victory, the interviewer opened with, “It’s only your fourth tournament back [since giving birth to her daughter, Alexis], and you didn’t know what to expect. You had such a great tournament, and you played so well.”

Williams, nodding and emotional, replied, “It was such an amazing tournament for me. I was really happy to get this far.”

She continued, her voice breaking a bit as the stands erupted in applause: “It’s obviously disappointing, but I can’t be disappointed. I have so much to look forward to—I’m literally just getting started. So I look forward to it.”

“You’ve hardly played any matches, absolutely,” the interviewer said. “I tell you, there are mums everywhere that say, ‘How has she done this?’ You are super-human supermum.”

“No, I’m just me and that’s all I can be,” Williams responded. “But for all the moms out there, I was playing for you today, and I tried. But you know, Angelique played really well; she played out of her mind, so you know, it was really good, and I look forward to just continuing to be back out here and doing what I do best.”

Wimbledon’s official account tweeted a clip of the interview with the caption, “Grace, poise and emotion. A runner-up’s interview given by a true champion.”

You can see that her words touched two fans in the stands in particular—notably Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, who were both in attendance at the final round. At the 40-second mark in the clip below, both duchesses—one a mom herself, the other Williams’ close friend—look visibly moved as Williams talks about playing for the moms watching the match.

The interviewer then asked what she said to Kerber during their hug after her victory. Williams responded, “Well, she’s an incredible person, Angelique is, and she’s a really good friend, so I’m really happy for it. It’s her first title so I know she’s going to really enjoy it and enjoy the moment. So congrats again, it’s amazing.”

Fans reacted to her speech with a ton of support, emphasizing the life-threatening complications that arose during her daughter’s birth and the incredible way Williams drove herself in just a few matches to be a Wimbledon finalist.

Her husband, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, also posted an incredible tribute to Williams:

“Days after our baby girl was born, I kissed my wife goodbye before surgery and neither of us knew if she would be coming back. We just wanted her to survive—10 months later, she’s in the #Wimbledon final. Congratulations, @angie.kerber. @serenawilliams will be holding a trophy again soon—she’s got the greatest one waiting at home for her. Our family knows she’ll win many more trophies, too. She’s just getting started. And I couldn’t be more proud.”

A true champion, even in defeat—and definitely, absolutely, still the G.O.A.T.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders Holds Back Tears When Kid Reporter Asks About School Shootings

On Wednesday, 13-year-old Benje Choucroun made a special appearance at a White House press briefing for his role as a writer for Time for Kids magazine. And, as any good reporter would do, Choucroun came prepared with a few questions, one of which left White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders nearly in tears.

During the briefing, Sanders smiled, pointed to the back and called on Choucroun to ask his question. The middle schooler, who currently attends Marin Country Day School in California, proudly stood up and explained, “At my school, we recently had a lockdown drill. One thing that affects mine and other student’s mental health is the worry that we or our friends could get shot at school.” He then asked, “Specifically, can you tell me what the administration has done and will do to prevent these senseless strategies.”

Sanders immediately jumped into an answer — as press secretaries tend to do — but this time, her voice shook as she appeared to be holding back tears.

“I think that as a kid and certainly as a parent, there is nothing more terrifying than for a kid to go to school and not feel safe, so I’m sorry that you feel that way,” Sanders replied. “This administration takes it seriously and the school safety commission that the president convened is meeting this week, again, an official meeting, to discuss the best ways forward and how we can do every single thing within our power to protect kids within our schools and to make them feel safe and to make their parents feel good about dropping them off.”

Following the briefing, CNN’s Dana Bash commented that “It looked like it was going to potentially be a light-hearted moment. And he had the toughest question in the room.” MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson called it “an unusual moment from a very articulate young man.”

Since January, there have been at least two dozen school shootings across the nation, which according to CNN equates to at least one school shooting per week so far. But, in the wake of these tragedies, it appears to be the voices of children, not adults, that ring out the loudest. Following the February school shooting in Parkland, Flordia, students affected by the senseless violence have come together to push lawmakers to take action. And their efforts appear to be working.

According to the Sun Sentinal, since the Parkland shooting that claimed the lives of 17 people, “14 states have changed their laws, while six major actions have been undertaken by cities and counties. Meanwhile, 10 companies tweaked their policies related to guns and 19 businesses have cut ties with gun lobbying groups.”

President Donald Trump is expected to visit the survivors of the latest school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas on Thursday. That shooting, which took place on May 18, claimed the lives of 10 people, including both students and teachers. However, on May 4, Trump walked back on his promise to the Parkland students that he will be tougher on the National Rifle Association. Instead, while speaking at an NRA conference, Trump enthusiastically told the crowd, “Your Second Amendment rights are under siege. But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I’m your president.”

'Dancing With the Stars' Season 25 Week 4: Most Memorable Year Week Brings Out Lots of Tears

Truthfully, no couple should have to go home on Dancing With the Stars‘ tear-induced “most memorable year” week—but then again, no viewer should have to go through this night without a triple pack of tissues and some ice cream either. Nick Lachey and Peta Murgatroyd, along with Derek Fisher and Sharna Burgess, were declared in jeopardy, and by the end of the episode, Tom Bergeron sent Derek and Sharna off to New York. It wasn’t a shocking elimination by any means, but it was Sharna’s earliest elimination since season 19 with Tavis Smiley.

As for Nick Lachey, it was his best dance by far—a memorable routine honoring his relationship with wife, Vanessa. She sweetly teared up throughout the rehearsal package and the performance, which you can watch here. Now, on to what else happened…

The Dances:

Frankie Munez and Witney Carson: Frankie kicked off This Is Us: The Reality Show with a somber revelation that he’s been suffering from severe memory loss over the last few years, in addition to mini strokes, also known as transient ischemic attacks. It’s all the more incredible that he’s able to compete on DWTS and memorize such elaborate routines. He wowed the audience once again with a beautiful Quickstep and three straight 8s. Score: 24/30

Terrell Owens and Cheryl Burke: Terrell opened up about his grandmother’s dementia diagnosis and death; for the first time, viewers saw a different—and welcome—side to the confident former NFL player. He broke down at the end of his Viennese Waltz, simply saying he wouldn’t be who he is today without his grandmother. Bruno said it’s his most accomplished performance to date, and Len said it was a very well-crafted routine and he “just danced great.” Score: 24/30

Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev: Nikki chose 2016 as her most memorable year, citing constant pain and injuries that led to discovering her neck was about to break in half. “I was told my career was over,” she said, but she vowed not to give up. “You can try and keep this girl down, but it won’t happen.” For tonight’s dance, she delivered a stunning contemporary number to Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song.” The only thing that might have upstaged her was Artem’s bulging muscles, which could have given Rocky a run for his money. “That was such a perfect blend of a newfound artistry,” Carrie Ann said. And sexiness, Bruno added. Don’t forget the sexy. Score: 24/30

Nick Lachey and Peta Murgatroyd: Nick said his wife, Vanessa, is his soulmate, life partner, and best friend. Then, two seconds later, bam: Peta, wearing a white dress, walked down the stairs with a bouquet of flowers. Yeah, that’s not weird at all. But once they moved past that odd visual, the rest of their contemporary was strikingly beautiful and sweet. Nick was in tears, and all I can think about is where I can find a guy like that. Len said Nick danced with sensitivity; Carrie Ann said “it’s by far…your best dance, ever.” Score: 22/30

Lindsey Stirling and Mark Ballas: Lindsay revealed she’s the woman she is today because of her father, who passed away after battling cancer in 2016. He helped turn her dream of learning the violin into a reality, and if she could say one more thing to her dad, it would be “thank you.” Naturally, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Len wished there was a little bit more Viennese Waltz to the dance, but ultimately, he “loved it.” As did we all. Score: 26/30

Derek Fisher and Sharna Burgess: I feel for Derek and Sharna, because how on earth do you follow Lindsay’s story? Well, in Derek’s case (and it’s certainly not a competition), he shared the story of his daughter’s battle with retinoblastoma (eye cancer). “We didn’t know if we’d see her alive again after that…I chose to walk away from the remaining years on my contract [with the NBA Utah Jazz] to make sure my daughter was going to be OK. The surgery worked, and she’s doing OK. She’s a miracle.” Opting not to destroy the audience with another tearful dance, Derek and Sharna performed a lively ’60s-inspired Jazz routine to “Move on Up.” Of course, the minute Derek walked over to his daughter in the audience to give her a sunflower, we were a puddle of tears again. Score: 23/30

Jordan Fisher and Lindsay Arnold: Jordan revealed his biological mother had him at the age of 16 and struggled with substance abuse, so his grandparents raised him and eventually adopted him. “It literally saved my life,” he said through tears. His dance was deeply moving and emotional. “That was exquisitely flawless,” Bruno said. “It was a work of art.” You know what else it was? The first dance to receive a “10” this season. Score: 29/30

Sasha Pieterse and Gleb Savchenko: Sasha pointed out that she was 12 years old when she did the pilot for Pretty Little Liars. (12! Let that sink in for a moment before we move on.) Now she’s engaged, competing on DWTS, and about to begin a new chapter on a PLL spin-off with fellow DWTS alum, Janel Parrish. The years in between were incredibly difficult, both from battling Polycistic Ovarian Syndrome, and losing out on acting jobs. That’s a lot to convey in a dance, but Gleb and Sasha performed a solid Foxtrot that earned the judges’ praises. Score: 24/30

Vanessa Lachey and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Vanessa revealed that her mother left her as a child on her dad’s doorstep and never returned. That alone is heartbreaking enough, but then we also learn the details about her youngest son’s difficult birth earlier this year. (He’s now OK, thank goodness). Vanessa danced a beautiful Rumba as Nick looked on with tears in his eyes, and the rest of the audience was a pile of mush. Carrie Ann said Vanessa had a bit of a wobble at one point, but “that’s real life” and it lent itself to the story. Honestly, who needs scores on a night like this? Everyone should get a 10. Score: 24/30

Drew Scott and Emma Slater: 2007 changed Drew’s life, just not in the way he expected. “My true goal was to be an actor on TV,” he revealed. “I did everything I could possibly do to make it as an actor, but it didn’t pay off.” He then remembered his dad’s advice, which was to never give up, especially on your passion. In this case—performing and real estate—became one, and then the rest as they say is history. But Drew’s story isn’t just about him; it’s also about his twin, Jonathan, who made a surprise appearance at the end of tonight’s dance and proved Drew doesn’t have all the moves in the family. “It’s undoubtedly your best dance,” Len said. Score: 24/30

Victoria Arlen and Val Chmerkovskiy: When Victoria was 11, her body started attacking itself. “I went from being a normal, happy kid to a complete vegetable,” she said. “I was having seizures every two to five minutes.” Her parents were told their daughter would die, but Victoria says “she’d be damned if this is how my story ends.” Miraculously, she recovered and began walking and talking again. And now, even without feeling in her legs, Victoria is a stunning example of what it means to never lose hope. I’m not sure if anyone saw her Foxtrot since tears were streaming down everyone’s eyes, but trust us, it was something else. Score: 27/30
