This Team USA Sailor Was a Little Too Enthusiastic About Meeting Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

A Team USA sailor hilariously broke royal protocol this week when he met Prince Harry at the Invictus Games in Australia and gave him a giant bear hug. Meghan Markle was by Prince Harry’s side, of course, and found the entire thing hilarious.

Here’s what happened: While watching a sailing event on the opening day of the Invictus Games in Australia, Markle and Prince Harry were greeted by a sailor who was so excited to meet them that he wrapped his arms around the Duke of Sussex and literally picked him up. “Now that’s a hug,” Markle observed, laughing as the sailor embraced her husband and patted him on the head.

When it was Markle’s turn to say hello, Prince Harry went into full protective mode and warned the man, “Now don’t hug her like that!”

“No, I know man,” the man told Prince Harry before giving Markle (who just announced she’s pregnant last week) a less-intense hug.

Watch this go down for yourself, below:

While royal protocol technically says commoners aren’t allowed to touch royals, this one seems to fall under the category of “rules Meghan and Harry are cool with breaking,” along with showing off public displays of affection and messy buns. On a recent visit to Sussex, Prince Harry even made one woman’s day life when he kissed her hand. And on one of the first days of their Australian tour, the couple broke protocol yet again by taking a photo with a fan who looked like a young Markle.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are halfway through their Australian tour, and over the weekend the palace revealed that Markle would be bowing out of some of her scheduled appearances for the rest of the trip. She opted to stay home and rest while Prince Harry presented the Invictus Game medals on Sunday morning, but thankfully she was there to witness the greatest hug of all time.

Team Melania Trump: Congressional Candidate's 'Hoebag' Insults Are 'Despicable'

An Oregon Congressional hopeful apparently isn’t trying to “Be Best” on Twitter when it comes to Melania Trump: Independent Mark Roberts is getting convicted in the court of public opinion for a tweet calling the First Lady a “hoebag” who “works by the hour.”

Roberts lashed out at the presidential spouse and former model this week after the leader of a national organization for young conservatives noted that Trump has a much smaller East Wing staff than her predecessor, Michelle Obama.

FLOTUS spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham lambasted Roberts’ insult, telling Glamour in her first comments on the issue, “This is just more hypocritical intolerance from those who oppose her husband’s administration. To say such ugly words about a mother, wife and our First Lady is not just a pathetic attempt at getting himself in the news, it is disturbing and despicable.”

Male and female A-listers in Republican circles called Roberts out for the sexist slam.

Among the many White House allies urging Twitter boss Jack Dorsey to shut Roberts down: House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who said “comments like these have no business on any platform.”

Republican National Committee Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel, who’s just the second woman in party history to hold its top job, tweeted, “This attack on @FLOTUS is disgusting and everyone should condemn this candidate and his candidacy.”

And Fox News host Laura Ingraham questioned why the head of Twitter hadn’t suspended the account—prompting Roberts to double down by responding, “Let the donations begin in 3 2 1..”

Roberts also tweeted a screenshot of what appeared to be a response from Twitter saying it had investigated the comment but had taken no action because his remark did not violate the platform’s rules. “It’s that whole 1st amendment thing,” he added.

Roberts calls himself an independent conservative and says on his website that he’s neither a fan of the Trump Administration nor “the exclusiveness and intolerance that’s exhibited by the current Republican Party.”

The House member currently representing Oregon’s District 2 is a Republican, and Roberts will go up against him and a Democratic challenger in November’s midterms. The Roberts campaign did not immediately respond to a Glamour request for comment Wednesday morning.

It wasn’t only headliners who condemned his crude comment: Others in the Twitterverse rushed to the First Lady’s defense, calling Roberts’ broadside “classless” and “sickening.”

One user told Roberts, “You barely pass for a mature adult much less someone wanting to represent his state by running for congress” — and capped the response with the hashtag #bullying.

Combating bullying, as it happens, is a pillar of the First Lady’s “Be Best” campaign, which promotes respect and civility, specifically among children, as well as raising awareness of the national opioid crisis.

Some critics and wags sneered after Be Best’s May launch that if Trump wants to take on cyberbullies, she might want to start with her husband, who churns out a steady stream of political and personal insults on his own Twitter feed. Others say it’s not fair to take a wife — even the First Lady — to task for a husband’s behavior.

Rina Shah, a Republican strategist who promotes political engagement among women, told Glamour the Roberts incident demonstrates that “our nation’s political discourse has, unfortunately for all of us, continued to sink to new lows. Americans deserve real leadership and ideas from political candidates instead of illogical mudslinging and name-calling.”

Platforms like Twitter “have long allowed damaging comments against women to exist without accountability; however, voters in this Oregon district can hold Roberts accountable by not casting their vote for him—essentially sending the message that when you attack one woman, you attack all women,” Shah said via email.

“Regardless of what anyone thinks about Melania Trump’s life choices prior to entering the White House, she doesn’t deserve to be talked about in this manner nor should she be implicated for her any of her husband’s undignified remarks or behavior.”

Former Team USA Gymnastics Doctor Larry Nassar Has Been Charged With Sexual Assault in Texas

Former U.S. gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar was charged with six counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child on Friday, following an investigation conducted into an elite sports center owned by coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi. Nassar is already serving decades in prison after being found guilty of criminal sexual conduct and possession of child pornography in Michigan, where more than 100 victims recounted stories of abuse during court hearings.

The most recent charges came after five former gymnasts urged an investigation into the Karolyi ranch, which is located in a secluded area of the Sam Houston National Forest, north of Houston. Numerous Olympians have trained at the facility.

On Friday, prosecutors found no evidence of wrongdoing by the Karolyis, but did charge trainer Debra Van Horn with one count of sexual assault as an “acting as a party” with Nassar. Although a statutes of limitations prevented prosecutors from charging USA Gymnastics officials for neglecting to report abuse to authorities, Walker County assistant district attorney Stephanie Stroud shared a strong statement about the organization’s “total failure” to protect athletes.

“We are bound by the law, but that in no way means there was no wrongdoing at the ranch or within the ranks of USAG,” Stroud said. “It is our belief that there was a total failure by USAG to protect the athletes that were part of their program, and to take appropriate action once they were made aware of Dr. Nassar’s actions.”

It’s unclear if Nassar will face trial in Texas. Last month, Michigan State University agreed to pay $500 million to women Nassar abused while working at the university.

Simone Biles Says She Was Also Sexually Assaulted by Former Team USA Doctor Larry Nassar

On Monday, the 2016 Rio Olympics four-time gold medalist Simone Biles alleged on Twitter that she too was sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar, a USA Gymnastics team doctor who allegedly attacked more than 130 women, including Team USA Olympian McKayla Maroney and Biles’ fellow “Final Five” Rio teammates Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas.

In a deeply personal post Biles wrote, “Most of you know me as a happy, giggly and energetic girl. But lately…I’ve felt a bit broken and the more I try to shut off the voice in my head the louder it screams.” She added, “I am not afraid to tell my story anymore.”

Biles wrote that there were many reasons that she was first reluctant to tell her story. “For too long I have asked myself, ‘Was I too naive? Was it my fault?’ I now know the answers to those questions. No. No, it was not my fault. No, I will not and should not carry the guilt that belongs to Larry Nassar, USAG [USA Gymnastics], and others.”

Nassar has already been convicted of both assault and possession of child pornography. Sentencing on his seven sexual assault charges will begin on Tuesday, January 16, when dozens of women will speak out on the stand against him.

“What people need to understand is these aren’t just anonymous people,” Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to come forward and publicly accuse Nassar, told NBC. “These were real little girls, some of them as young as 6 years old,” Denhollander added. “These were real young women who are suffering devastating consequences now, and this could have been avoided.”

As Biles said in the closing of her statement, “We need to know why this was able to take place for so long and to so many of us. We need to make sure something like this never happens again. As I continue to work through the pain, I kindly ask everyone to respect my privacy. This is a process, and one I need more time to work through.”

Aly Raisman Opens Up About Alleged Sexual Abuse by Former Team Doctor

Six-time Olympic medalist and Team USA gymnastics captain Aly Raisman recently came forward with allegations of sexual assault against Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics team doctor. In a Today Show interview Monday and in a passage from her upcoming memoir, she opened up about the confusion she experienced after the alleged assaults, which she says began at 15—and her struggle to come forward after her realization she’d been abused.

“It wasn’t until I started seeing other doctors and athletic trainers that I began to realize that their methods were far different from Larry’s,” Raisman wrote in her memoir, Fierce, set to be released on Tuesday and excerpted on Monday by People.

She wrote that she would often go in for bodywork with these other trainers and doctors. With them, “towels were draped over my hips and buttocks for privacy and to ensure that there was no inappropriate skin-to-skin contact.” Raisman added that other coaches and trainers “never, ever crossed any lines” when they worked with her.

Raisman continued in her memoir: “There was never a moment when their methods made me uncomfortable. It was different with Larry. I would lie on the table, my hands involuntarily balling themselves into fists as his ungloved hands worked their way under my clothing. ‘Treatment sessions’ with him always made me feel tense and uncomfortable.”

The gymnast wrote that she would simply “grit” her teeth and bear it, thinking she was alone. She’d later learn she was far from the only one.

“Over the years, among the girls who were invited to camps, there was some talk of Larry and his ‘treatment methods.’ Most of us thought the way he touched us was weird. But he did it to so many of us that we assumed, blindly, that he must know something we didn’t,” she wrote.

“I want people to know that I really didn’t know what was happening to me,” Raisman said on the “Today* show” Monday. “He was a doctor and he told me that his treatment would help heal all of my injuries. He was such a master manipulator, and I think that’s what’s important for people to understand is that these monsters are so good at manipulating you so you’re so brainwashed to think—I thought he was so nice.”

She told People on Monday that she’d struggled to come out with her allegations. “I was just so scared and nervous about what people were going to think. I was a textbook victim, brainwashed to believe I was fine.”

She added on “60 Minutes” that she chose to speak out now because she wants others to learn that “just because someone is nice to you, and just because everyone is saying they are the best person, it does not make it OK for them to ever make you uncomfortable, ever.”

At least 140 women are suing Nassar for sexual abuse, and a 2016 investigation found that at least 368 gymnasts had been sexually abused while working for USA Gymnastics. In July, Nassar pleaded guilty to three child pornography charges in federal court. He is currently in jail and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 7.
