Netflix's Outer Banks Season Finale Recap: All Your Questions, Answered

If you’re obsessed with Netflix‘s new series Outer Banks, you’re not alone. The beachy teen drama is a perfect mix of Riverdale, Gossip Girl, and The O.C. with a little bit of The Goonies mixed in, so it’s no surprise it’s a hit both with critics and fans alike.

The show centers on John B. Rutledge (Chase Stokes), a 17-year-old who lives in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina and leads a band of not-so-rich misfits named the Pogues: JJ (Rudy Pankow), Kiara (Madison Bailey), and Pope (Jonathan Daviss). After John B.’s father mysteriously disappears and leaves behind hints of where the Pogues can find a $400 million treasure, they set out to find it.

They’re not the only ones hunting for the gold, of course. On the other side of the spectrum, we have the Kooks, the Outer Banks’s rich elite, of which Sarah (Madelyn Cline) is a part of. Her father, Ward (Charles Esten), is also hellbent on finding the treasure, and the other Kooks in town—including Sarah’s boyfriend, Topper (Austin North), and brother, Rafe (Drew Starkey)—love undermining the Pogues whenever they can.

As you can imagine, it doesn’t take long for things to come to a head. By the Outer Banks season finale—spoiler warning—Sarah has dumped Topper and fallen deeply in love with John B. The two flee to the Bahamas, where the treasure is now located, after it’s revealed that Ward is the one responsible for the disappearance (read: murder) of John B.’s father. And there’s a new romance on the horizon, too, for Kiara and Pope.

With so many cliffhangers and no confirmed season two, we chatted with Madelyn Cline to figure out where the Kooks and Pogues go from here. She answered all our questions about the finale and then some. Read on.

Glamour: What were your thoughts when you saw where Sarah was going in the season finale?

Madelyn Cline: We have such great writers, and they’re very, very receptive to our ideas. I remember there was a point when one asked me, “Do you think you, as Sarah Cameron, would choose your family or John B.?” I remember thinking on it and telling her, “I wholeheartedly believe Sarah is 100% absolutely head over heels for John B., and I think she absolutely would get on that boat with him.” There’s one part in the show when John B. tells Sarah, “You’re all I have.” I told the writer that at that point John B. is also all Sarah has. Her world just crumbled around her, so it’s a no-brainer that she would have gotten on that boat with him and risked everything.

So what do you think will happen next? Do you think they’re going to set up shop in the Bahamas or get the treasure and come back?

In my mind, what I see is this Blue Lagoon or Castaway-type scenario where they get to the Bahamas and have the gold bars, and they live in this really romantic, Bonnie and Clyde-type Blue Lagoon world. They’re just in this honeymoon phase of, “We’ve run away from home, we’re in love, we’re in this beautiful place, and there are no problems.” I would really love to see everything they’ve been running from catch up to them. I think they might have to go back to the Outer Banks because of the Pogues and confront all the things they’ve been running from.

How do you think Sarah will process what came out about her father? Could you see them having some kind of relationship? Where do you think that relationship’s going to go?

Who Is Chase Stokes? Get to Know the ‘Outer Banks’ Star With These Inappropriate Questions

Oh my gosh, 100%. I will recommend this to the world, and next thing you know, Pedialyte is going to have a boost in their stock. If you drink an entire thing of Pedialyte after a night of drinking, you will wake up the next morning completely hangover-cured. It is proven by not just me, but by scientists around the world. And by scientists, I mean the majority of the cast of Outer Banks. And if you don’t have Pedialyte, two Advil and a giant Gatorade, and you’re good to go.

Let’s say we’re out of quarantine and you are going to a party. You stop by a convenience store to pick up some things. What are you buying?

Spicy Nacho Doritos, a bag of Sour Patch Kids, bottle of whiskey, and no, I’m never sharing any of them. Well, I’ll share the whiskey. But the Doritos and Sour Patch kids, those are staying in my pocket.

What are you currently binge-watching?

I am obsessed with New Girl. Nick Miller from the streets of Chicago! I am a Jake Johnson fan until I die.

Which celebrity do you first remember having a crush on?

Jennifer Aniston. It’s the same today. It will never leave.

She’s perfect. Did you love when she joined Instagram?

I actually cried. Like, I had tears coming out of my eyes. I was like, “She is available. We are on a similar parallel now.” There’s no chance for me, but at least knowing that we both have an Instagram, there’s a slight possibility that this could potentially turn into a conversation, at least. And if I die knowing I had a conversation with Jennifer Aniston, then I’ll die a happy man.

Do you have a type?

I’m really, really attracted to intellect. Any mental thing. Physicality sort of becomes a secondary thing for me. I’m so in tune with people’s hearts and people’s souls and deep conversations before I even start to look at the sexuality stuff. I’m not a typical, sexual-driven male. For me, it’s more about, I want to have a deep in-depth conversation with somebody before I even think about the physical intimacy of it. So anybody that can get in touch with my brain and then my soul, that’s what’s going to turn me on the most.

Is there a topic that someone could bring up on a date that you’d absolutely flip out over? Like, in the best way?

Something I’m completely not going to expect would blow me away. Anytime somebody brings up something you’re completely unaware of that that person’s going to bring to the table is the best of circumstances. It opens the floodgates into the universe of now, what’s next? And you can go from there.

Do you ever turn to astrology for guidance? Are you an astrology person?

I’ll be honest. On a scale of one to 10, I don’t. But if it’s optimistic and it’s something positive about the next 24 hours of my life, I am so game. If it tells me I’m about to make $10,000 in the next 24 hours, I believe it. If it’s negative, I’m like, “This stuff is not real.”

This Is Us Season 4, Episode 10 Recap: All Your Questions From the Midseason Premiere, Answered

Glamour: How prepared are you for the onslaught of fans worried for Randall?

Isaac Aptaker: I don’t know. [Laughs] We’re never quite prepared, but we sort of knew what we were getting when we had our beloved family man face to face with an intruder holding a knife in his kitchen, so yeah, I think we’re as prepared as we can be!

Did you ever think about having this episode be the fall finale? Because talk about a cliffhanger.

IA: No, I think that would be a little too long to wait [to find out what happens] to someone in mortal danger. We never want to be cruel, so I think a week is the perfect amount of time.

How soon into the next episode will we find out what happens with Randall and this man in his house?

IA: It’s not going to be a waiting game. This is our most to-be-continued direct pick-up that we’ve ever done, so we’re going to jump back in next week right where we left off and find out what happens to Randall. And we’re launching into a trilogy of episodes [starting next week], which we haven’t done since season two, where the next three episodes will be about a different sibling, following them over the same week in time. So Randall is first up, and we’ll see right away what happens to him and that intruder.

Sterling K. Brown said we will examine more of Randall’s struggle to maintain his mental health, but obviously a situation like this—no matter what the outcome is—won’t help. What more can you say?

IA: I think that intruder is coming into his house at a time where Randall’s plate and brain are so fully loaded, on top of having the crazy job and what’s going on in his immediate family, he now has Rebecca and her well-being and he takes that so seriously. That L.A. trip is so important to him. He’s returning home from Los Angeles after having gotten this really confusing and ambiguous, but not positive, news about his mom. And then this is just the last thing he needs on his plate, this very physical menace.

Switching gears, let’s talk about Kate and Toby. Will we meet Cara, otherwise known as Lady Krptonite?

IA: Maybe! I don’t want to give anything away, but I know that’s something people are eager to find out who is this woman.

Is she still a threat? It seems like Toby has done his best to distance himself from her, but obviously she sounds very into him.

IA: Yeah, I’d like to think we should believe Toby. He’s a trustworthy guy and he really loves Kate. That said, there’s always that lingering doubt and a little bit of trust issues that something like that brings up—when you find out that your partner is talking about you behind your back to a group of people, including this woman, who is eager to rush to his aid.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Step Down as ‘Senior’ Royals: 6 Questions Answered by Glamour's Resident Brit

Their move, of course, throws up SO. MANY. QUESTIONS. a great number of which we answer right here. But as the newly-resident Brit in the Glamour US offices (I’m Glamour’s new Executive Editor) —and Harry and Meghan superfan (yeah, AND?), I’ve taken it upon myself to attempt to answer the many other BURNING H&M questions that came tumbling out in the immediate aftermath. Here goes:

1. Does this mean Meghan can do SmartWater #sponcon?

Well, technically, probably yes. They have committed to extricating themselves from the shackles and limitations of being a “senior Royals”—thus giving up the Sovereign Grant which pays them around $2.5 million a year—meaning Meghan and Harry should be able to undertake work like any other civilian/Instagram influencer with over 10 million followers. Harry’s first cousins Princess’ Eugenie and Beatrice have both held down jobs—in an art gallery and at a technology firm respectively—while also retaining their Royal titles. And Zara Tindall, another of Harry’s first cousins who actually doesn’t have a Royal title, is not just a celebrated athlete but also a paid ambassador for global brands including Range Rover motors and iCandy strollers. As bonafide influencers in a digital age, don’t be surprised if they pop up as ambassadors for brands that align with their own goals. But lucrative speaking engagements might just be their first (slightly less controversial) port of call.

2. How does Kate REALLY feel about it?

Sadly, just because I have British blood does not mean I have a hotline to our Queen-in-waiting. Current British media speculation has William and Kate as blindsided as Queen Elizabeth. While Harry alluded to some tensions between himself and William in a recently televised interview with television presenter Tom Bradby, the issues were believed to have been mostly between the brothers. Kate also reportedly expressed her wish that her children and their cousin Archie could spend more time together, so it’s unlikely she’ll be celebrating H&M’s upcoming decampment abroad.

3. WTF does “work to become financially independent” mean?

“Granny’s no longer paying for us, but dad’s still giving me an allowance.” Plus, oh, that inheritance in the bank. Oh and Meghan’s fortune from her time on Suits. #prayforthesussexes

4. What are people in the U.K. saying about this? Do they actually care at all?

Yes we do! More than is rationally normal, especially for a family WE DO NOT KNOW and who, as is made more than regularly clear to us, DON’T REALLY WANT US TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM EITHER. Mainly, millennials and gen-Zers supports their decision. Frankly, wouldn’t we all want the profile and the Instagram followers, without having to censor our thoughts and tailor our lifestyles to the whims of a bunch of pale, stale, and male Royal officials? We’ve seen how Meghan and Harry have tried to modernize their roles to ones that reflect the lives and habits of their peers—and they’ve been faced with non-stop offensive, sexist, and racist criticism. But those Brits with a more traditional take don’t like the fact that Harry and Meghan have deserted their Queen and want to live life on their terms. They believe that the couple have a duty to share their lives and family in return for their lifestyle. I say, go your own way.

5. Will The Tig come back? (BRING BACK THE TIG.)

Good question, but sadly unlikely. However, since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have actually patented the Sussex brand for a news publication or website as well as even t-shirts and merchandise, expect sussexroyal.com to become more editorialized. The Tig 2.0, if you will.

6. Who gets Sussex? Do they keep Sussex? Did she legally change her name?

As Buckingham Palace have suggested in their statement, all of these details are still to be worked out. We, however, have a different suggestion. Harry Markle has got quite a ring to it, dont’cha think?

Lea Michele's Christmas Movie Has Left Me With Many Questions

Warning: Light spoilers ahead.

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about Lea Michele’s holiday-themed romantic comedy, Same Time, Next Christmas, since I watched it last night. It’s your typical, delightful rom-com: An architect, Olivia Anderson (Lea Michele), heads to Hawaii for the holidays, where her family and another family, the Williamses, travel every year for Christmas. For context: Over the years she’s formed a friendship with the Williams’s son, Jeff. But after the Williams matriarch passed away, they stopped going to Hawaii with the Andersons.

Cut to the present day: Olivia is back in Hawaii, and so is the Williams family—including a very hot, very grown-up Jeff (played by Charles Michael Davis). Sparks fly, naturally, but there’s an issue: Olivia has a boyfriend back at home, Gregg (Bryan Greenberg), who surprises her on the trip. A love triangle of sorts unfolds with—spoiler alert—Jeff winning out in the end. You’ll have to watch the movie to find out how this specifically unfolds, but, in my opinion, there was no contest. Jeff is beefy and goofy and was down to go cliff-diving with Olivia. Gregg, meanwhile, would rather run laps than lay on the beach and didn’t want to pack a picnic for his hike with Olivia because he had protein bars. He was hilariously, dramatically un-fun.

“On paper Gregg and Olivia are a great match, but in reality there’s something missing,” Greenberg tells Glamour. “He conflates business with love. He’s looking more for a business partner than a mate. He doesn’t really understand the difference between the two, which in a romantic comedy doesn’t go over well, as you might guess.”

Part of the reason why I couldn’t get enough of Same Time, Next Christmas was that the right choices were just so obvious. Watching Olivia toggle back and forth between Jeff and Gregg felt a lot like watching a scream queen make poor decisions in a horror movie. I shouted at my screen many times while watching Same Time, Next Christmas. It was an absolute blast.

This Is Us Season Three Finale Details: Executive Producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger Answer the Biggest Questions

Caution: Spoilers for the This Is Us season three finale ahead.

This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman was spot-on when told us the last five minutes of the season three finale are as “big and sprawling and epic as we get.” After much back and forth, Randall and Beth finally were on the same page with plans to move to Philadelphia, where Beth will open a dance studio and Randall will continue his political career. Kate and Toby brought baby Jack home from the NICU. Rebecca and Miguel were preparing to move to Los Angeles. And Zoe and Kevin broke up when it became obvious they’ll never be on the same page about having kids.

Then things got really interesting. In the future, we learned that Beth and Randall are still together (thanks for the season-long anxiety about that, writers!) and Kevin has a pre-teen son. Kevin’s also seemed to be doing well for himself, as evidenced by that sprawling house the Pearsons gathered at to visit an ailing Rebecca.

Speaking of Rebecca, she looked like a fraction of her 60-something self, complete with long white hair and an emotionless expression. When Randall entered her room, he heartbreakingly had to remind her who he is. (Does this mean she’s suffering from a form of Alzheimer’s disease?) At her bedside wasn’t her husband, Miguel, but Jack’s estranged brother, Nicky. (Who, by the way, was looking much better in this future timeline.)

Oh, and future Kate? She was nowhere to be found. When Toby mentioned Jack, he said “they’re on their way.” But that doesn’t mean he was talking about his wife. And, if Kate is alive, it doesn’t sound like Katoby are an item still. (Anyone else notice that Toby wasn’t wearing a wedding ring?)

With our heads spinning and our hearts racing, we called up executive producers and co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger to fill us in on exactly what’s going on in the future. Read on.

NBC

Glamour: Let’s start with the basics: How many years in the future are we when we see Rebecca lying in bed?

Elizabeth Berger: We haven’t decided exactly how many years in the future we’re at, but we’ve imagined it as roughly 12-15 years.

Yes or no, Rebecca has a form of Alzheimer’s or dementia?

Isaac Aptaker: Possibly. Or possibly this is someone near the end of their life experiencing a lack of awareness and confusion that comes with extreme old age.

EB: We can’t say exactly what’s going on with her, but we will be learning exactly what’s going on with her as we move forward in our story.

How close to death is she? Is it a matter of hours, where everyone is gathering to say goodbye?

IA: I think it definitely feels like she’s very near the end of her life and that her passing is imminent and that’s why everyone has decided to descend upon Kevin’s house.

We see Nicky sitting at her bedside. Does Rebecca think Nicky is Jack? If she does have a form of Alzheimer’s, a lot of people remember the past better than the present day.

EB: It’s a totally cool theory and totally possible. Obviously we can’t say what’s going on until we learn more of what is going on with Rebecca, but it’s a very interesting take on it.

Nicky has also aged better than anyone else.

IA: That wasn’t an accident. We wanted the read to be on Nicky that though he is older, we’re seeing a guy in a better place than when we last left him. The fact that he aged really well shows he’s in a much better place mentally and physically than when we left him in that trailer.
