Netflix's Outer Banks Season Finale Recap: All Your Questions, Answered

If you’re obsessed with Netflix‘s new series Outer Banks, you’re not alone. The beachy teen drama is a perfect mix of Riverdale, Gossip Girl, and The O.C. with a little bit of The Goonies mixed in, so it’s no surprise it’s a hit both with critics and fans alike.

The show centers on John B. Rutledge (Chase Stokes), a 17-year-old who lives in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina and leads a band of not-so-rich misfits named the Pogues: JJ (Rudy Pankow), Kiara (Madison Bailey), and Pope (Jonathan Daviss). After John B.’s father mysteriously disappears and leaves behind hints of where the Pogues can find a $400 million treasure, they set out to find it.

They’re not the only ones hunting for the gold, of course. On the other side of the spectrum, we have the Kooks, the Outer Banks’s rich elite, of which Sarah (Madelyn Cline) is a part of. Her father, Ward (Charles Esten), is also hellbent on finding the treasure, and the other Kooks in town—including Sarah’s boyfriend, Topper (Austin North), and brother, Rafe (Drew Starkey)—love undermining the Pogues whenever they can.

As you can imagine, it doesn’t take long for things to come to a head. By the Outer Banks season finale—spoiler warning—Sarah has dumped Topper and fallen deeply in love with John B. The two flee to the Bahamas, where the treasure is now located, after it’s revealed that Ward is the one responsible for the disappearance (read: murder) of John B.’s father. And there’s a new romance on the horizon, too, for Kiara and Pope.

With so many cliffhangers and no confirmed season two, we chatted with Madelyn Cline to figure out where the Kooks and Pogues go from here. She answered all our questions about the finale and then some. Read on.

Glamour: What were your thoughts when you saw where Sarah was going in the season finale?

Madelyn Cline: We have such great writers, and they’re very, very receptive to our ideas. I remember there was a point when one asked me, “Do you think you, as Sarah Cameron, would choose your family or John B.?” I remember thinking on it and telling her, “I wholeheartedly believe Sarah is 100% absolutely head over heels for John B., and I think she absolutely would get on that boat with him.” There’s one part in the show when John B. tells Sarah, “You’re all I have.” I told the writer that at that point John B. is also all Sarah has. Her world just crumbled around her, so it’s a no-brainer that she would have gotten on that boat with him and risked everything.

So what do you think will happen next? Do you think they’re going to set up shop in the Bahamas or get the treasure and come back?

In my mind, what I see is this Blue Lagoon or Castaway-type scenario where they get to the Bahamas and have the gold bars, and they live in this really romantic, Bonnie and Clyde-type Blue Lagoon world. They’re just in this honeymoon phase of, “We’ve run away from home, we’re in love, we’re in this beautiful place, and there are no problems.” I would really love to see everything they’ve been running from catch up to them. I think they might have to go back to the Outer Banks because of the Pogues and confront all the things they’ve been running from.

How do you think Sarah will process what came out about her father? Could you see them having some kind of relationship? Where do you think that relationship’s going to go?

This Is Us Season 4, Episode 10 Recap: All Your Questions From the Midseason Premiere, Answered

Glamour: How prepared are you for the onslaught of fans worried for Randall?

Isaac Aptaker: I don’t know. [Laughs] We’re never quite prepared, but we sort of knew what we were getting when we had our beloved family man face to face with an intruder holding a knife in his kitchen, so yeah, I think we’re as prepared as we can be!

Did you ever think about having this episode be the fall finale? Because talk about a cliffhanger.

IA: No, I think that would be a little too long to wait [to find out what happens] to someone in mortal danger. We never want to be cruel, so I think a week is the perfect amount of time.

How soon into the next episode will we find out what happens with Randall and this man in his house?

IA: It’s not going to be a waiting game. This is our most to-be-continued direct pick-up that we’ve ever done, so we’re going to jump back in next week right where we left off and find out what happens to Randall. And we’re launching into a trilogy of episodes [starting next week], which we haven’t done since season two, where the next three episodes will be about a different sibling, following them over the same week in time. So Randall is first up, and we’ll see right away what happens to him and that intruder.

Sterling K. Brown said we will examine more of Randall’s struggle to maintain his mental health, but obviously a situation like this—no matter what the outcome is—won’t help. What more can you say?

IA: I think that intruder is coming into his house at a time where Randall’s plate and brain are so fully loaded, on top of having the crazy job and what’s going on in his immediate family, he now has Rebecca and her well-being and he takes that so seriously. That L.A. trip is so important to him. He’s returning home from Los Angeles after having gotten this really confusing and ambiguous, but not positive, news about his mom. And then this is just the last thing he needs on his plate, this very physical menace.

Switching gears, let’s talk about Kate and Toby. Will we meet Cara, otherwise known as Lady Krptonite?

IA: Maybe! I don’t want to give anything away, but I know that’s something people are eager to find out who is this woman.

Is she still a threat? It seems like Toby has done his best to distance himself from her, but obviously she sounds very into him.

IA: Yeah, I’d like to think we should believe Toby. He’s a trustworthy guy and he really loves Kate. That said, there’s always that lingering doubt and a little bit of trust issues that something like that brings up—when you find out that your partner is talking about you behind your back to a group of people, including this woman, who is eager to rush to his aid.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Step Down as ‘Senior’ Royals: 6 Questions Answered by Glamour's Resident Brit

Their move, of course, throws up SO. MANY. QUESTIONS. a great number of which we answer right here. But as the newly-resident Brit in the Glamour US offices (I’m Glamour’s new Executive Editor) —and Harry and Meghan superfan (yeah, AND?), I’ve taken it upon myself to attempt to answer the many other BURNING H&M questions that came tumbling out in the immediate aftermath. Here goes:

1. Does this mean Meghan can do SmartWater #sponcon?

Well, technically, probably yes. They have committed to extricating themselves from the shackles and limitations of being a “senior Royals”—thus giving up the Sovereign Grant which pays them around $2.5 million a year—meaning Meghan and Harry should be able to undertake work like any other civilian/Instagram influencer with over 10 million followers. Harry’s first cousins Princess’ Eugenie and Beatrice have both held down jobs—in an art gallery and at a technology firm respectively—while also retaining their Royal titles. And Zara Tindall, another of Harry’s first cousins who actually doesn’t have a Royal title, is not just a celebrated athlete but also a paid ambassador for global brands including Range Rover motors and iCandy strollers. As bonafide influencers in a digital age, don’t be surprised if they pop up as ambassadors for brands that align with their own goals. But lucrative speaking engagements might just be their first (slightly less controversial) port of call.

2. How does Kate REALLY feel about it?

Sadly, just because I have British blood does not mean I have a hotline to our Queen-in-waiting. Current British media speculation has William and Kate as blindsided as Queen Elizabeth. While Harry alluded to some tensions between himself and William in a recently televised interview with television presenter Tom Bradby, the issues were believed to have been mostly between the brothers. Kate also reportedly expressed her wish that her children and their cousin Archie could spend more time together, so it’s unlikely she’ll be celebrating H&M’s upcoming decampment abroad.

3. WTF does “work to become financially independent” mean?

“Granny’s no longer paying for us, but dad’s still giving me an allowance.” Plus, oh, that inheritance in the bank. Oh and Meghan’s fortune from her time on Suits. #prayforthesussexes

4. What are people in the U.K. saying about this? Do they actually care at all?

Yes we do! More than is rationally normal, especially for a family WE DO NOT KNOW and who, as is made more than regularly clear to us, DON’T REALLY WANT US TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM EITHER. Mainly, millennials and gen-Zers supports their decision. Frankly, wouldn’t we all want the profile and the Instagram followers, without having to censor our thoughts and tailor our lifestyles to the whims of a bunch of pale, stale, and male Royal officials? We’ve seen how Meghan and Harry have tried to modernize their roles to ones that reflect the lives and habits of their peers—and they’ve been faced with non-stop offensive, sexist, and racist criticism. But those Brits with a more traditional take don’t like the fact that Harry and Meghan have deserted their Queen and want to live life on their terms. They believe that the couple have a duty to share their lives and family in return for their lifestyle. I say, go your own way.

5. Will The Tig come back? (BRING BACK THE TIG.)

Good question, but sadly unlikely. However, since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have actually patented the Sussex brand for a news publication or website as well as even t-shirts and merchandise, expect sussexroyal.com to become more editorialized. The Tig 2.0, if you will.

6. Who gets Sussex? Do they keep Sussex? Did she legally change her name?

As Buckingham Palace have suggested in their statement, all of these details are still to be worked out. We, however, have a different suggestion. Harry Markle has got quite a ring to it, dont’cha think?

Elizabeth Warren Brilliantly Answered a Question About Same-Sex Marriage—And the Internet Loves It

Last night CNN and the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) hosted an Equality Town Hall with 2020 Democratic presidential candidates to discuss LGBTQ+ issues. A wide range of important topics were discussed, including banning conversion therapy and lifting restrictions on gay men donating blood. But there was one standout moment that made the internet go wild, and it came from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass).

At one point HRC chairman Morgan Cox posed a question to Warren: “Someone approaches you and says ‘Senator, I’m old-fashioned, and my faith teaches me that marriage is between one man and one woman’—what is your response?”

Warren, arms folded, grin wicked, didn’t miss a beat. “Well, I’m gonna assume it’s a guy who said that,” she said as the audience started to laugh. “And I’m gonna say, ‘Well, then just marry one woman. I’m cool with that!’”

After a pause so impeccable Lorne Michaels should recruit her to play herself on SNL, Warren added: “Assuming you can find one!” The crowd went nuts—and so did Twitter.

Watch the moment for yourself below.

“@SenWarren this was ? ???,” USWNT star Megan Rapinoe tweeted.

“The TIMING. The DELIVERY. The TWINKLE IN HER EYE. I can’t wait to see Elizabeth Warren wipe the debate stage with Donald Trump’s haystack of a toupee,” Sam Stryker wrote.

“This is a perfect response to homophobic religious bigots. Elizabeth Warren is a legend. #EqualityTownHall,” another person wrote on Twitter.

Seriously, the social media responses were almost as good as Warren’s own answer. “Elizabeth Warren just ended homophobia,” one user wrote. “Willing to vote for @SenWarren based on her comedic timing alone at this point,” another said.

Earlier in the day, singer Melissa Etheridge publicly endorsed Warren for president and noted her support of the LGBTQ community. “Elizabeth Warren understands the LGBTQ community and the needs we have,” she said. “On this National Coming Out Day I am officially pledging my support for her candidacy for president. Let’s move forward with the woman that has a plan for our future.”

Your Most Common Questions About the Female Orgasm, Answered

“Instead of going down this maddening distraction spiral, the best thing to do is simply acknowledge that mental distraction is the price we pay for having brains,” Marin says. “If you notice your brain starting to wander, acknowledge that you’re thinking about something different, then gently bring your attention back to the present moment.” Just call it mindfulness for sex.

A lot of women struggle with feeling unworthy of time or attention when it comes to their sexual pleasure, says Marin. But sometimes, orgasms take work, especially when you’re first learning to orgasm or having your first orgasms with a partner. That is more than okay—there’s no time limit for your orgasm.

The more practice you have (with a partner or solo), the easier orgasms will come, says Marin. But in the meantime, focus more on reminding yourself that “you deserve that time and effort,” she says.

If you don’t orgasm during intercourse, don’t sweat it—that’s totally normal. Only about a quarter of women regularly orgasm during intercourse, according to Lloyd’s analysis, and when they do, it’s probably because their clitoris is being stimulated simultaneously.

But can you learn to orgasm from penetration? “The reality is that penetration itself doesn’t create enough stimulation for the vast majority of women to reach orgasm.” Marin says. “Female orgasm is all about the clitoris, but the clitoris doesn’t get a ton of stimulation during intercourse.”

That doesn’t mean it’s not possible. “I like to make the distinction between orgasming from intercourse and orgasming during intercourse,” Marin says. “To increase your chances of orgasming during intercourse, Marin recommends touching your clitoris, having your partner touch it, using toys, or trying a position like the Coital Alignment Technique that allows for clitoral stimulation.

Many women feel vaginal orgasms are somehow “better” than clitoral orgasms, or even as if a clitoral orgasm doesn’t really “count” as much. This isn’t a real distinction, says O’Reilly; whichever feels more natural and pleasurable for you is all that matters.

In fact, it’s hard to tell if there’s really a difference between the two types of orgasms. “Orgasms do not fit neatly into categories based on a particular technique or body part,” O’Reilly explains. “The clitoral complex is not only located in close proximity to the vaginal canal, but parts of it actually surround the vagina, making it difficult to isolate the exact source of pleasure and orgasm.”

If you do orgasm through penetration, those orgasms may or may not feel different from clitoral ones. It’s possible that they will because different nerves are being stimulated, says O’Reilly. But if you only orgasm clitorally, that doesn’t mean you’re experiencing less pleasure than someone who orgasms through penetration.

Nope, but a lot of women don’t discuss it. “We teach women to be ashamed and embarrassed of female orgasm, so a lot of women don’t feel comfortable being honest about their orgasmic struggles,” Marin says. “There are so many women out there who haven’t yet orgasmed.”

First, remember that you’re in good company. And second, remember that an orgasm drought likely won’t last forever.

All Your Questions About Nicky on This Is Us, Answered

Isaac Aptaker: Tim brought us the idea of grenade fishing, which was something he saw a lot of the guys do in his experience. So it didn’t feel like too big of a leap of the imagination to see how it could go terribly wrong.

Before we get to what happened in Vietnam, the episode starts with Kevin and Randall already having told Rebecca and Kate about Nicky. Talk about the decision not to show their immediate reaction to Nicky being alive.

IA: Oh, interesting. This has been so much Kevin’s story for the season; he’s been the one on this quest to reconnect with his father by learning about this part of his life, so it felt like he was front and center here and we could have him filling in the family as a catch up.

EB: But we’re definitely going to be delving into the reactions more, especially Rebecca’s as the season continues to play out.

Nicky had no idea that Jack died. For someone who wanted so badly to talk to his brother, why didn’t Nicky try to track him down again in the remaining six or seven years of Jack’s life?

EB: I think that interaction we see between the two of them was sort of the end of Nicky following Jack and sort of the progress of Jack’s life. I think it was obviously an extremely loaded and extremely painful interaction for the both of them, and I think there was something about learning about Jack’s life and the future that he went on to have that hurt so much that Nicky sort of let it go at that point.

IA: I don’t think Nicky was big on Facebook or anything. [Laughs] He’s not the kind of guy that is going to get that kind of news all that readily. He’d have to really seek it out, and like Elizabeth said, that was sort of the end point there of him wanting any answers.

You mean he’s not like Miguel where he’s finding people on social media?

IA: Yeah, I don’t think he has like 1,000 friends or anything. Maybe Nicky loves Instagram. [Laughs]

It makes sense that Jack didn’t want Nicky around his kids, but it’s still infuriating that he wouldn’t allow him to explain. Do you want viewers to be upset with Jack right now?

EB: I definitely think it’s OK to feel like it was a very complicated decision and to feel frustrated by him. He has a lot of really upstanding qualities, but he’s also human. He’s limited in some ways. I think we’ve seen there is a part of Jack that sees everything in black and white, and this part of his life exists in such a terrible gray area that for whatever reason it was just too painful for him to figure out how to make it work with his present day life. We tried to show that’s what’s interesting about Kevin making a different decision than his father and trying to do better as the next generation carrying on a piece of this story.

NBC/Ron Batzdorff

IA: I think that Kevin moment [at the end] shows that even though Jack may not have made the right decision in the moment, he was able to raise kids who do one better than him, which I think is the ultimate goal.

Right. Because it’s like, why drive all the way out there if you’re not going to hear what your brother has to say?

IA: Right, I think that’s fair. I think it also speaks to how Jack compartmentalizes his life. He’s not able as a person to reopen that chapter, and he doesn’t want to take in any new information because it was so painful; the only way he could function in the world was to bottle up and plow ahead.
