Selena Gomez's New Album, Rare: All the Lyrics That Are (Maybe) About Justin Bieber

Selena Gomez’s highly-anticipated third studio album, Rare, dropped this Friday, January 10, and it will certainly make her fans happy. Sonically, the record is right on par with her critically-praised 2015 LP, Revival: minimalistic and mid-tempo with spurts of buzzy, electronic energy. The focus on Rare is definitely the lyrics, with subtle production that doesn’t overshadow Gomez’s stream of consciousness. The singer wrote in November 2019 that this record is her “diary from the past few years,” and that’s absolutely apparent.

Hell, we knew this from the first two singles, “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now,” alone. Nothing’s been confirmed, but it’s widely speculated both of those songs center on Gomez’s breakup with Justin Bieber, who’s now married to Hailey Baldwin. Lyrics like “In two months you replaced us like it was easy” have fans thinking Gomez is referring to how quickly Bieber began dating Baldwin after ending things with her in 2018.

And now, we have a full album of lyrics to dissect. To be clear, there’s nothing on here explicitly about Bieber—just general musings about heartbreak and healing. But if the album really is a diary of her past few years, Bieber no-doubt inspired some of what we’re hearing. Below, a breakdown of all the lyrics from Rare that could be about him (emphasis on could—think of this like a big fan theory more than anything):

“Rare”

This plucky pop tune is all about realizing that someone who doesn’t realize your worth is not worth your time. The lyrics are general but depict a romantic relationship—so that opens up the possibility this song is about Bieber.

“Baby, you’ve been so distant from me lately,” Gomez sings. “And lately, don’t even wanna call you baby. Waiting up for you upstairs. Why you act like I’m not there?”

“It feels like you don’t care,” she continues. “Oh why don’t you recognize I’m so rare?”

At one point, Gomez flat-out questions why she’s staying with this person. “Baby, don’t make me count up all the reasons to stay with you,” she says. “No reason why you and I are not succeeding at all.” Bieber and Gomez ultimately ended their relationship in 2018, at which point he started dating Baldwin.

“Dance Again”

By far the most uptempo track on the album “Dance Again” is light and fun—centering on Gomez letting go after months of stress. “I kickstart the rhythm,” she sings. “All the drama’s in remission.” The drama she’s referring to could be about Bieber. It wouldn’t be a stretch, seeing as how their relationship was operatically documented by tabloids.

“Lose You to Love Me”

Again, we have a full analysis of the maybe-about-Bieber lyrics here.

“Vulnerable”

On this song, Gomez questions entering a relationship with a person. “If I give you every piece of me, I know that you could drop it,” she sings. “Give you the chance, I know that you could take advantage once you got it. If I open up my heart to you, I know that you could lock it. Throw away the key, and keep it there forever in your pocket. If I give the opportunity to you, then would you blow it?”

Selena Gomez Says Getting on ‘the Right Medication’ Changed Her Life

Selena Gomez is getting ready to drop her highly anticipated album, Rare, this week, and ahead of its big release, she’s opening up about some of the extremely personal lessons she learned while making the record. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal magazine this week, Gomez got candid about her struggles with self-esteem and mental health, and shared that learning more about treatment and getting on the right medication “completely changed” her life.

Gomez has spoken about mental health and therapy in the past, and she took time off in 2018 to check herself into a psychiatric facility in Tennessee. She re-entered public life this year, slowly sharing new music and moments from the last couple of months on social media. She told the WSJ that she’s continued to seek treatment and to work on her health.

“I had low self-esteem, and that’s something I work on continuously. But I feel so empowered because I’ve gained so much knowledge about what was going on mentally,” she said. “My highs were really high, and my lows would take me out for weeks at a time.”

She added that it’s been through the right medication and through support systems that she’s been able to take care of herself. “I found out I do suffer from mental health issues. And, honestly, that was such a relief,” she continued. “I realized that there was a way to get help and to find people that you trust. I got on the right medication, and my life has been completely changed.”

One of the people she’s consistently counted on during difficult times is Taylor Swift, she says. “There’s so much of my friendship with Taylor that people don’t know about because we don’t necessarily feel the need to post about everything we do,” she said. “She has showed up for me in ways that I would have never expected. Flown in because I was hurt and was going through something. Stuff that was going on with my family. It’s been proven year after year and in every moment of my life that she is one of my best friends in the world. We don’t agree on everything, but we respect each other with everything.”

Selena Gomez’s third studio album, Rare, drops this Friday, January 10.

Selena Gomez Rang in the New Year Lounging on a Yacht in Hawaii

We aren’t even through the first week of January yet, but Selena Gomez’s style is already winning 2020.

Rather than spending New Year’s Eve at a crowded party, Gomez jetted off to the islands of Hawaii with a group of friends to ring in the new year both in warmth and in style.

“Selena is spending a week on the Hawaiian island of Oahu to ring in 2020,” a source shared with E! News. “She is staying in a house with her group of close girlfriends and they all are enjoying a relaxing vacation with beach time and hanging out together.”

The source added that on December 31 the group boarded a private yacht for a sail around the island where the singer was photographed lounging atop the deck in an adorable olive green bathing suit by wanderlust.

The exact top and bottom that Gomez wore are sold out on Wanderlust’s website, but, the swimsuit’s matching bandeau top is still available—and on sale—for $63. And a pair of lowrise bikini bottoms are still available in the same olive green color as well.

“Selena seemed completely relaxed and happy. She had no makeup on and was very casual and comfortable with everyone,” the source noted to E! about Gomez’s time in Hawaii. “It was a mellow day and just a chance to be out on the water enjoying the perfect weather.”

The photos of the starlet’s island vacation came on the same day Gomez herself shared some of her own favorite photos and videos of 2019 to her Instagram Stories.

As Glamour previously reported, the photos included snaps of Gomez playing with Taylor Swift’s cat; a group photo of Gomez and her friends at a Kacey Musgraves concert; footage of her recording her song “Look at Her Now;” and video clips from her other travels in 2019 including her trip to Kenya.

Gomez’s 2020 is looking to be just as good as her 2019 considering her third album, Rare, will drop on January 10.

Selena Gomez Just Shared a Bunch of Rare Personal Videos From Her 2019

Selena Gomez really did have quite the 2019. After taking some time out of the spotlight to take care of her mental and physical well-being, she burst back onto the public stage with new music, a live performance, and a great set of bangs. She also appeared to have a lot of fun with her friends and family.

On Wednesday, January 1, Gomez took a little stroll down memory lane and shared some of her favorite moments of the year on her Instagram Stories. Since taking a social media hiatus last year, she’s been a little quiet on the platform, but these photos and video clips make it clear she’s been documenting some good times that happened in 2019. Her story included shots of Gomez playing with her BFF Taylor Swift’s cat; a group photo of Gomez and her friends wearing cowgirl hats at a Kacey Musgraves concert; footage of her recording her song “Look At Her Now;” and video from a trip to Kenya she took that she writes “changed” her life. She also included a glimpse at a cake she was given to celebrate her very first number-one Billboard hit, “Lose You To Love Me.”

Some fans also noted that she stealthily revealed what she was doing on September 30, the day her ex Justin Bieber married his now-wife Hailey Baldwin. Gomez uploaded some photos marked with the date that indicate she was hanging out with her girlfriends and lounging over tons of food, clearly not stressing too much. A total mood, TBH.

ELLE writer Alyssa Bailey uploaded all the videos to Twitter for easier viewing.

All of this is proof that even though she didn’t post as actively, Selena Gomez had a pretty spectacular year—and there are already hints that 2020 is going to be even bigger for her. She announced that her long-anticipated third album, which has been nearly four years in the making, will drop on January 10. We’re guessing it’ll offer even more intimate clues about what her life has looked like recently.

Selena Gomez Got a Brand-New Thigh Tattoo

Selena Gomez had a big night at the 2019 American Music Awards. The “Lose You to Love Me” star performed her two new songs live, stunned on the red carpet, and also made sure to immortalize the night on social media, where she proudly displayed a brand-new tattoo.

On November 24, Gomez posted a collage of Polaroid “getting ready” pics, and the collage featured a glimpse at Gomez’s new body art: a tattoo of praying hands with a rosary, inked on her thigh. Sel’s new ink was covered up by her red carpet dress and performance outfits, so if she hadn’t posted the Polaroids, we’d have no idea that she added another tattoo to her collection.

Gomez now has more than 10 tattoos (that we know of). Though most of them are relatively small and delicate, this new piece is much larger and more impactful. According to her Instagram, it was done by the artists at Bang Bang NYC, a tattoo shop known for its celebrity clientele and detailed art.

Gomez and Julia Michaels recently got matching arrow tattoos as well, but those were courtesy of London’s The Black Lantern tattoo studio. Gomez has also gotten matching tattoos with her BFFs (a number four) and the cast of 13 Reasons Why (a semicolon).

It looks as though tattoos are meaningful to Gomez, used to mark life changes and significant relationships, and since we know her faith is very important to her, the praying hands tattoo seems like something she will cherish for years to come.

Selena Gomez had quite the night at yesterday’s American Music Awards, performing her hit songs “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now.” She performed the former song with a black-and-white set before bursting into technicolor for the second. “Lose You to Love Me” became Gomez’s first number-one on Billboard’s Hot 100 a few weeks back.

Selena Gomez  Performs Live for the First Time in Two Years at the 2019 AMAs

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

Gomez had taken some time out of the public eye in recent years. While she wasn’t releasing new movies or music, she focused on producing show like 13 Reasons Why, lending her voice to movies like Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, and giving awesome toasts at her friend’s weddings. But earlier this fall, the singer stepped back into the spotlight, dropping back-to-back singles signaling a return to her musical roots.

Fans immediately surmised that both songs were about Gomez’s tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber. While Gomez has not mentioned Bieber by name while promoting the new song, she has been getting super candid about her exes.

“Yeah, I think, you know, I’m really grateful too because I’ve actually experienced that [exes moving on to another relationship quickly] a million times before,” she said when speaking to Ryan Seacrest. “And that’s the unfortunate part about what I do. So it’s all very real to me, and I’m sure it’s just entertainment for other people, but I think I had become numb to it, and it would be stupid of me if I didn’t acknowledge what I had felt because it would be inauthentic, and that’s everything I claim to be and do.”

“These two songs were me wrapping up a chapter in a pretty little bow, and the rest of the album is just all about where I am now and where I’m going so, in my opinion, these are great songs, but I’ve saved the best for later,” Gomez added.

The singer recently announced that the full, as-yet-untitled album will be released on January 10, 2020.
