Emily Ratajkowski Debuted the Sleekest Lob at Rihanna's Diamond Ball

Some of us get really excited to show off a new hair cut. We anxiously await a night out or work on Monday as a chance to debut it for friends and colleagues. But when you’re Emily Ratajkowski, your New Hair Night Out is at Rihanna’s third-annual Diamond Ball, which is truly aspirational. On Friday at the event, the most gorgeous part of her outfit wasn’t her all-black, bustier-and-maxi-skirt ensemble or sunset-y makeup (which were both stunning)—instead, it was the sleek-AF lob that crowned her look.

We’ve seen Emily with one before—namely, back in January at the Golden Globes. She opted to trade her signature waves in for an equally wavy, piece-y lob that hit right at her shoulders. As it turns out, she had tricked us all: her stylist, Christian Wood, told us that it was a faux bob and that he’d cut a few pieces, tucked a few others, braided a bit more, and voilá. The look was soooo good, but, as we wrote through tears, it was not to last.

Until now! Unless it’s another con job, it very convincingly looks like she’s taken the plunge. Emrata posted a pic to Instagram on Friday night of her look as she was getting all glam at her hotel for Rihanna’s event. In the pic, she captioned it with a diamond emoji to represent her destination, followed by the handles of makeup artist Patrick Ta, hairstylist Jennifer Yepez, and colorist Aura.

Taking some inspiration? Here’s what it looks like from the side:

And one more from the front, just ‘cuz it’s so pretty:

The cut is minimalist and sharp, warmed up by the infusion of honey and golden tones. In contrast, here’s what it looked like last Thursday—huge difference, no?

Of course, it could be a wig—or, yes, a color job with another faux do (according to Aura’s Insta, dye was, in fact, applied to her hair). But it’s gorgeous no matter what.

Beyonce Wore a $165 Dress to Rihanna's Diamond Ball

We’ve seriously missed Beyoncé during her hiatus from the spotlight. (Though, she has blessed us with some pretty epic pictures of her and her newborn twins, Rumi and Sir Carter.) Last night, our wishes for more Queen Bey were granted, finally, when she made her grand re-entrance to the red carpet at Rihanna’s third annual Diamond Ball. Well, she technically didn’t stop at the step-and-repeat—but she gamely posed for pictures inside of the charity event with all of our favorite attendees. Our favorite part about this appearance, though? How surprisingly affordable her ensemble was.

For Rihanna’s ultra-fancy gala, Beyoncé opted or a teal satin maxi dress by London-based brand House of CB, according to InStyle. However, unlike the other gowns on display at the Diamond Ball, her exact style retails for only $165. (She paired the affordable wrap silhouette with Giuseppe Zanotti platform heels, because even Queen Bey enjoys a good high-low moment.)

The Serafina (Beyoncé’s style of choice) is in stock on House of CB’s online shop, surprisingly enough. But if the hype around any of her other shoppable endeavors is any indication (hi, Ivy Park), it won’t be available much longer.

Not every celebrity could make a budget-friendly dress look this luxe—but then again, not every celebrity is Beyoncé. We’re hoping that her next public appearance will include more affordable pieces to copy. (She’s been known to rock her House of CB as well as her Gucci, after all.)

Until that next bit of outfit inspo, see some more pictures of how Queen Bey styled her affordable ensemble, below.

Ashley Graham Calls Out Rihanna's Fenty Runway Show For Not Using Curvy Models

PHOTO: Angela Weiss/AFP/Getty Images

Ashley Graham has long been the face of size inclusivity on the runway, constantly pushing designers to do better and cast more plus-size (or curvy, as Graham prefers to be called) models in their shows. And though the fall 2017 shows saw a record 27 plus-size model appearances in New York alone—up from 16 the previous season and a mere six the one before—Ashley says there’s still lots of progress to be made.

In an interview with Yahoo! Beauty, Graham, who has her own lingerie brand, the Ashley Graham Collection, does not think that this year’s collections will be as progressive as last season’s. “It’s sad,” she says. “It’s funny to me, because I’ll look at runways and think, ‘I’d look so great in those clothes’ or ‘I know curvy women who would look so great in those clothes.’”

And she even called out a few names in particular. “I was at Fenty, and that was an amazing show. But how dope would it have been to see some curves on the runway? I think Baja East would be really cool to have curves on the runway. Philipp Plein would be really cool.” Though Rihanna has proved that she’s devoted to providing every woman with an option in the beauty industry—stores cannot keep the deepest shades of Fenty Beauty in stock just days after it dropped—Ashley does have a point that true diversity is not just limited to skin tone.

But it’s not all bad. There were the Christian Siriano and Prabal Gurung runway shows, both of which Graham and other plus-size or curvy models walked in, plus the Chromat show, which was one of the most diverse, with plus-size, transgender, and older models. Nevertheless, designers should all strive to include as many different skin tones, body types, hair textures, etc., as possible.

Rihanna's Fenty Beauty Is Here and It's Even Better Than We Dreamed

PHOTO: Fenty Beauty / Instagram

In February, when a range of new faces were being cast for campaigns, it felt refreshing. But that representation elation didn’t last long. When women of color weren’t being insulted by poor choice in product names, we were discovering that many beauty brands still don’t have a real firm grasp on what inclusion is and what it isn’t. We’ve been left with promises of shade expansions to come—or the introduction of, say, maybe three deep options—and pledges to do better. But thankfully, there’s a major mogul who gets it: Rihanna. And praise the makeup Gods because today she officially revealed her entire Fenty Beauty line.

News of the line has had us in a frenzy since it was first announced, but after last week’s teaser posts on Instagram suggested that women with a huge range of skin tones had grounds to get excited, we all gave up hope of maintaining any semblance of chill. It wasn’t just that the long wait was coming to an end that got us so stoked—it was that Fenty’s campaign, which featured a diverse cast of models, suggested that Rihanna wouldn’t join the ranks of brands that launched with a few dark shades and swore an expansion would follow.

Makeup addicts with skin tones like Duckie Thot to Camila Costa and 38 shades in between had reason to rejoice. Now it’s finally happening and we’ve got all the details, straight from RiRi herself and our reporter on the ground at the Fenty Launch party tonight in Brooklyn, NY.

Let’s dive right in.

Since Rihanna herself is larger than life, I for one wasn’t shocked that Fenty Beauty is as well. At its debut, the line offers a whopping 91 items, including 40—yes, 40—shades of foundation, 30 magnetized concealing, contouring, and highlighting sticks, and a single stunning lip gloss. The shades for all the products are evenly spread across multiple skin tones. No shade is an afterthought. No one is ignored.

First up—makeup. The aesthetic is exactly what we would expect from Rihanna; sleek and modern with a touch of edge in the design. Of course, the highlighter singles and duos, contouring sticks, and brushes (more on them in a minute) are gorgeous to look at, but they’re also so much more than that. The very fact that a dewy, subtle inner gleam is the aesthetic focal point of the line seemed to say, imagine it in Rihanna’s voice, “shine bright like a diamond.”

Even the product names lean toward brightness. Killawatt Freestyle for the highlighter, Gloss Bomb for the lip luminizer, and Match Stix for the contouring sticks. As for prices, everything hovers around the “what you’d pay for designer makeup” mark. The highlighters and foundations are $34, the lip gloss $18, and a trio of contour sticks rings in at $54.

Fenty Beauty also brings us a vast range of tools (priced from $16 blotting papers to a $34 foundation brush), solidifying what many folks—myself included—believed about the line before it even launched. Rihanna didn’t want to just make pretty packaging and tons of money. By offering nine different tools from the get go, Rihanna is putting the power of beauty into the hands of her fans. Really, it’s not surprising considering that brand reps report the pop star and fashion mogul’s goal with Fenty Beauty was to help her global fan base experience the same transformative power she found after trying makeup for the first time on the pageant circuit at 15.

It’s refreshing to see a celebrity launch makeup without only her own preferences or skin tone and type in mind. I’m not shading groundbreakers like Iman who have launched lines exclusively for women of color. It’s been necessary for women of color to create their own makeup, hair care, and skin care products because bigger brands, historically, don’t always bother. But Rihanna is doing something even more radical than embracing underserved shoppers. She’s gone above and beyond the beauty industry norm with a truly inclusive line as evenly spread across the color spectrum as we’ve ever seen from a celebrity line. Fenty Beauty is the future of diverse and inclusive makeup. And as tiring as those two words have become this year, as a beauty editor and a woman of color I like the sound of that.

Fenty Beauty launches Friday, September 8 at midnight and is available online at sephora.com and fentybeauty.com.
