All the Golden Globes 2020 Red Carpet Looks You Can't Miss

The holidays are officially over, but fear not, awards season officially kicks off with tonight’s Golden Globes 2020 red carpet. Often referred to as the most fun awards show—and the only one where attendees can actually drink—celebrities tend to have a little more fun with their looks as opposed to ceremonies later in the season. In addition to some truly iconic dresses—we’re still obsessing over Lady Gaga’s lavender ballgown from last year—the Golden Globes red carpet has also been used to make a political statement, like 2018’s all black dress code in solidarity with the Me Too movement. While there’s no planned dress code this year, we can be sure to expect tons great fashion. The nominees this year are a mix of red carpet veterans like Jennifer Lopez and Reese Witherspoon, along with newcomers like Beanie Feldstein and Awkwafina.

Check out every single look from the Golden Globes 2020 red carpet below, and check back as we update through the night.

Amber Heard Is Fighting for Social Justice in Red Lipstick

I just read She Said by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, [the reporters who broke the explosive report about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual harassment allegations], and it was insanely good. Spectacular. It’s detail-oriented, specific, biting, and smart. And it really champions the truth and highlights the crucial role journalism can play in our world, especially when it’s done correctly and not encumbered by the systems in place to protect those who are abusing positions of power. When [those systems] are challenged or circumnavigated and truth can come out, what a difference it makes.

Ronan Farrow’s book Catch and Kill is also equally good—a page-turner like no other. Frankly, I’m a little sad that I finished them. But I just started Sally Rooney’s book Conversation with Friends, and it’s such a good read. I think we need more women to speak from our generation and through our perspectives. Not by politicians, but by activists and thought leaders. I want to see more of our presence in the fiction world and in creative spaces too.

You’re stranded on a desert island. What are the three products you want with you?

Sunblock, sunblock, and sunblock. I mean, look at my skin. I’m going to bring sunblock and reading material. That’s it. Abandon the constraints of a bathing suit, I just need something for my brain and for my skin.

What’s your go-to getting ready music?

It changes a lot, but these days I’m into “dad music,” as they call it. So the old classics. I listen to them loud volume, no shame.

You’ve got $20 and free roam of a drugstore. What do you buy?

I’d definitely buy some lipstick. I love a red L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche. There’s a reason they say lipstick is recession proof. It’s one product that can dramatically change how you look and how you express yourself. And then for the rest: sunblock, an eye mask, and I don’t know how much more my $20 will get me, but maybe bath salts?

Raspberry Bourbon Hair is the Easiest Way to Try Red Hair

Toasty Melt, Brown Ale, Mulled Wine: No, these aren’t menu items at a hot new restaurant, but the latest crop of food- and drink-inspired hair colors that are blowing up on Instagram.

The latest shade to join the party is a perfect way for brunettes to get into the red trend without going all the way. Named “Raspberry Bourbon” by Popsugar, the color takes a cue from its namesake drink and has a rich mahogany base swirled with ribbons of warm red on the ends. It’s perfect for the colder weather.

“I think Raspberry Bourbon hair color is so appealing because it feels like highlights for the winter,” Devon Toth, hairstylist at New York based Salon SCK, tells Glamour. “It’s an unexpected way of brightening up your hair color during a season when people typically take their hair shade a bit darker. The depth is still there but it melts into this bright, rustic mahogany tone. It’s an evolution of the cherry hair color with an added hint of purple.”

Stephanie Brown, master colorist at New York’s IGK Salon Soho, says she’s recently noticed an uptick in her brunette clients trying red shades and credits Zendaya’s gorgeous copper shade at the Emmys. “Seeing how amazing it looks on her is probably why people are wanting to play with reds now—maybe not as bold, but are trying more of an ombré with it,” she says. She also adds that winter is the perfect time to dip into this trend, since “warming up your color for fall and winter helps add a little glow to your skin when we now see little to no sunlight.”

Brown suggests asking your stylist for a partial ombré with the copper shade because it can look brassy if there’s too much color. She also says to bring photos of the exact red you want in order to ensure you’re happy with it, since everyone interprets red differently. For brighter pops of color, Toth suggests asking for a touch of purple in your highlights and for balayage on your ends. For something more subtle, he says to “ask for foil highlights if you want to see the raspberry hues throughout the whole style from roots to ends.”

Both experts are quick to point out that this particular shade needs some extra TLC because red trends to fade much faster than other colors. “Make sure you use color safe products to prevent your hair from oxidizing,” says Brown. “Don’t take too-hot showers, the water should be as cool as you can take it so your hair doesn’t oxidize. Dry shampoo is your friend!”

In order to keep the color vibrant, Toth also recommends using an at home color depositing shampoo and conditioner (try Overtone). He also suggests going into your salon for a monthly gloss. “What I like about this is you can enjoy some of the color fade before it gets too aggressive, and while you’re in the salon, they can really richen up your roots with a single process as well,” he says.

The 41 Most Memorable Red Carpet Looks From the Past Decade

Look at red carpet pictures from any given year, and you can be transported back in time, remembering the biggest names, the major trends, and, sometimes, even the biggest issues that were weighing on people’s minds. The last decade changed how we consumed and talked about Hollywood fashion—social media played a bigger role (Twitter was founded in 2006, Instagram in 2010, after all), stylists became celebrities in their own right, and the veil was lifted slightly on what actually goes into dressing someone for a high-profile event. We asked different questions: of actors, but also of the fashion industry, of who has access to the glitz and glamour and gowns. And we got plenty of memorable looks we still think about and reference today.

There are a few red-carpet moments that we can all agree on. (Several people interviewed for this story called out Billy Porter’s Christian Siriano tuxedo-gown hybrid from the most recent Oscars as a standout from the decade.) But looking back on the last ten years of red carpet fashion, there have been countless fashion moments that have landed in the headlines for a wide variety of reasons: because it was beautiful, because it showed someone in a brand-new light, because it sent a message, because it opened up a conversation.

“An ‘iconic’ red carpet moment can be interpreted in so many ways,” says stylist Andrew Gelwicks, who works with actors like Catherine O’Hara and Dominique Jackson. “On one side, you have Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s matching denim looks from to the 2001 American Music Awards—they were kitschy and costume-y. Then, on the other, you have Lady Gaga in Valentino at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, where it’s iconic because it’s so incredibly special.”

Vanessa Friedman, fashion director and chief fashion critic for the New York Times, says: “For me, the most effective red carpet looks are not just aesthetically successful—elegant, beautiful, flattering—but reflect a moment of social or cultural change. It’s the combination of style and substance that makes them memorable.”

The fact that we still talk about some of these looks months, even years later speaks to the power of a red-carpet moment. “I do think there’s something to this idea that you can have a couple of really terrific profiles written about you, but a singular image can really speak volumes,” says The Washington Post‘s Robin Givhan. “It’s something that can be conveyed over and over and over to a public that may not sit down to read a full interview. It’s a shorthand that says, ‘I’m important.’”

We asked people in the fashion industry—from critics and editors to stylists—to share what they believed to be the most memorable red-carpet fashion from 2010 to today. From Porter to Lady Gaga to Rihanna, see who made an impression.
