This Is the Important Reason Women in Sweden Are Wearing Pussybow Blouses

The pussybow blouse has become a style charged with feminist symbolism, from its ’80s incarnation as a working woman’s counterpart for men’s traditional shirts and ties to Emma Stone‘s “Don’t Grab My Pussy Bow” take in support of Hillary Clinton following that Trump tape. Now, it’s being worn in solidarity in Sweden after Sara Danius, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize in Literature, was ousted after a #MeToo scandal rocked the academy.

It begins with Jean-Claude Arnault, a major cultural figure in Sweden who’s married to Swedish Academy member and poet Katarina Frostenson. They ran a cultural club that, according to the New York Times, has been a recipient of academy money in the past. In November, a Swedish newspaper reported that 18 women accused Arnault of sexual assault and harassment over the span of two decades, some instances of which allegedly took place at the club.

Danius, who is the first woman to lead the Swedish Academy, was responsible for figuring out how the organization would respond. She cut all academy ties with him (Frostenson also stepped down from her role in the academy) and hired a law firm to investigate the relationship between the academy and the club. According to the Times, “financial irregularities” were found, and the firm recommended the academy file a police report, though ultimately the organization didn’t.

All of this somehow lead to Danius’ ousting, the ultimate reasons behind which are still unclear (though, as the Times notes, two former academy leaders—again, both men—called her leadership weak). Women in Sweden see her ousting as unfair, yet another case of a woman taking the fall for a man’s alleged crimes.

After Danius, known for wearing pussybow blouses (in Swedish, knytblusar) left the academy, her former coworkers and Swedish citizens around the country wore their own pussybow blouses as a sign of solidarity. They also started posting on social media using the hashtag #knytblusförsara.

One such Instagram came from Alice Bah Kuhnke, Sweden’s minister of democracy and culture. “I find it frustrating that such a conflict ends with two women having to step out of the way,” she said in a radio interview. “I can’t accept that.”

Many others—even men—participated:

This Is the Frustrating Reason Best Album Nominee Lorde Won't Be Performing at the Grammys

The Grammys are tonight, and both celebrities and us normals watching from our couches are gearing up for the big event. After all, awards shows are way better when your favorite artists are performing. But one artist, nominated for Album of the Year, won’t be heading up on stage to wow us—and the circumstances are pretty surprising.

Lorde is the only female up for Album of the Year (Melodrama) this year, but Variety reported on Saturday that she wasn’t offered a chance to give a solo performance up on stage. Every other nominee—who are, again, all male—was given the opportunity and will be singing on stage, according to the magazine.

According to Variety‘s source (who’s “close to the situation”), the Grammys reached out to Lorde about performing as part of a group—reportedly a tribute to Tom Petty—which she declined. She wasn’t asked to sing solo, and so she’s decided not to perform at all.

It’s not like her voice is gone or anything, as Variety points out: She did two flawless gigs on Wednesday and Friday—so no issues there. But it’s worth noting that, in a year of #MeToos, for an event that has a chronic history of ignoring women’s contributions to music to conspicuously oust her from performing isn’t a good look. Throughout Grammys past, there have been 457 male nominees and winners for Best Album—but only 90 female nominees (and from there, just 21 winners).

Lorde’s mom, Sonya Yelich, was thinking along the same lines: She posted a photo to Twitter on Friday with an excerpt from a New York Times article circled. “This says it all,” she captioned the tweet.

Lorde didn’t sing during her VMAs performance last August, either—but that was for an entirely different reason called the flu. Unfortunately this time, we won’t get treated to any of her slick dance moves either.

Tonight's 'Grey's Anatomy' Episode Will Be Titled '1-800-799-7233' for This Important Reason

As longtime fans of Grey’s Anatomy know, music is almost as much a part of the show as the hospital formerly known as Seattle Grace. If you’re anything like me, you can name the song that was playing during the most emotional moments. There’s “Breathe (2 AM)” as Meredith is about to take a live grenade out of someone’s chest or when Cristina and Mer danced it out one last time to Tegan and Sara. And, of course, there’s the iconic scene set to “Chasing Cars” after Denny died in season two.

What it might take people a moment to realize, though, is that every episode title over all these years is pulled from a song. The pilot? “A Hard Day’s Night.” The aforementioned two-parter with a bomb in a body? “It’s the End of the World As We Know It” and “And I Feel Fine.” An episode just last November name checks Hamilton with “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story.” But that streak ends tonight—and for a very powerful reason.

At the end of the winter finale, we were left with a cliffhanger that saw Jo’s (Camilla Luddington) abusive ex-husband (played by Glee‘s Matthew Morrison) show up at the hospital to confront her. She’s gone to enormous lengths to stay away from this dangerous man, going so far as to change her identity. Tonight’s episode will continue that story—and because of this, the original title, “Four Seasons in One Day,” has been changed to “1-800-799-7233,” the actual phone number for the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff tweeted that the “brilliant” idea was suggested to her by actor Giacomo Gianniotti, who plays Dr. Andrew DeLuca. We’re glad he spoke up:

“Krista [Vernoff], and myself and all the writers, because it’s been such a long time coming, there have been so many conversations with domestic abuse organizations,” Luddington explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “We ended up feeling like even just the words and the dialogue that we wanted to use in several scenes, we were just particular with it, because at the end of the day, we wanted to tell this story right, and also educate people that have misconceptions about domestic abuse, who it happens to, and what it looks like. Conversations have been going on for a very, very long time in order to tell this story the right way that we felt like got the message across that we needed to get across with it.”

Emily Blunt Has a Very Sweet Reason for Refusing to Take Selfies With Fans

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski are one of the most recognizable couples in Hollywood. Blunt has starred in several box-office hits—Girl on the Train, The Devil Wears Prada, Into the Woods, to name a few—so it’s easy to see why fans might feel comfortable approaching her in public. Krasinski, on the other hand, played Friendly Regular Guy Jim Halpert for several seasons on The Office. Obviously, people feel connected to him.

That being said, Blunt and Krasinski are still entitled to their privacy—as we all are—and shouldn’t feel obligated to take photos or chat with fans. Several celebrities have opened up about why they refuse to take selfies with people in public, and Blunt just added her voice to the chorus. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Blunt says she’s not into snapping for photos with fans—not anymore, at least. And it’s not because she doesn’t want to meet the people who watch her films: She just wants a more genuine exchange.

“Social media has changed the landscape, so an encounter with you is valued more as a social-media currency than a genuine interaction,” Blunt told the magazine. “Frances McDormand told us—she just makes my teeth ache I love her so much—when someone asks her for a picture, she says, ‘You know what? I’ve actually retired from that. But I would like to shake your hand and meet you.’”

Honestly, having a five-second chat with Blunt about how The Devil Wears Prada helped me come out sounds way more appealing than taking a blurry pic that will inevitably get buried in Instagram. In fact, it’s those types of chats—the real ones—that make Blunt realize the importance of her career.

“I am always under the impression that I have a silly job for a living,” she also told VF. “But occasionally you will run into someone who deepens your feeling about it. Sometimes people will say they had cancer and The Office was the only thing that made their family laugh during that time. You realize when you are in something that really touches people that it does offer an escape.”

Demi Lovato Took Danica Roem as Her Date to the AMAs for an Important Reason

Demi Lovato’s date to the American Music Awards tonight is a major trailblazer—Danica Roem, the first out and seated transgender state legislator in U.S. history. Danica was elected on November 7 to Virginia’s House of Delegates, unseating Bob Marshall, the Republican lawmaker who penned the state’s anti-transgender bathroom bill. “I hope that my victory inspires people,” Danica told Teen Vogue at the time. “Whatever your life calling is, you can succeed because of who you are and not despite it.”

Her message resonated with Demi so much that the singer decided to extend an invite to the AMAs. “We connected because I heard her story,” said Demi on the red carpet Sunday night. “She’s actually the first out and seated transgender state legislator in American history. When I heard that, I was just completely inspired by it. My story with ‘Sorry Not Sorry’ is about bullying. I wanted to have her in the audience with me tonight, because I feel like we’ve been through some of the same things. Now we get to share this experience together.”

The feeling was mutual. “I’m also grateful that Demi has spent her career advocating for people who need a voice when they feel voiceless, and that she really understands that no matter what you look like, where you come from, who you worship, or who you love, you should be welcomed and celebrated because of who you are, not despite it,” Danica said.

Both women will be touching on the issue of bullying tonight. Demi has always spoken out about her mental health, opening up about topics such as her bipolar disorder, surviving self-harm, and her past eating disorder. As a longtime advocate of bullying survivors, she will be performing her song “Sorry Not Sorry,” an “unapologetic song” she wrote for “shutting down” haters who bully her on a daily basis.

“Some fans are saying that I’ve inspired them to either get over certain struggles in their lives, whether it’s bullying, a mental illness they now live and thrive with a mental illness and they’re happy and healthy,” she said. “And some people are actually said that I’ve saved their life, which is unfathomable and I can’t comprehend it fully, but it means the world to me.”

Meanwhile, Danica will be speaking tonight about inclusion and bullying prevention. According to the incoming state legislator’s Twitter, her AMAs invitation was super last-minute, and she’ll be back in her home state tomorrow morning just in time for a 7:30 a.m. school board meeting.

On the red carpet, Demi found out from an interviewer that she’d made People magazine’s list of 25 women changing the world. “It’s amazing and it feels incredible, and I think Danica should be on that list as well,” she said. When asked if she agreed, Danica reacted with humility and a focus on what she can do in the future.

“I just want to be a good delegate,” she said.

The Real Reason Behind Nancy and Steve's Problems on 'Stranger Things'

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

It’s clear from the first episode of Stranger Things‘ season two that all is not well between Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Steve (Joe Keery). They’re both still reeling from Barb’s death, and the guilt is putting a strain on their own relationship. Nancy can’t even help Steve with his college admissions essay without things turning sour.

Their relationship hits a low point at the Halloween party in episode two: Nancy gets incredibly drunk and essentially says everything between her and Steve is “bullshit.” She’s tired of them pretending like nothing’s wrong; they know Barb is dead—and she blames herself for it—but they haven’t said anything to anyone. Steve is heartbroken by Nancy’s speech; it makes him question her love for him, their relationship…everything. Their dynamic completely changes as a result.

And then there’s Jonathan (Charlie Heaton). He’s the one who ultimately drove Nancy home from that Halloween party. (Steve abruptly left after his fight with Nancy.) Jonathan and Nancy’s friendship has grown leaps and bounds since last season, and things start escalate once she and Steve are on the outs.

Naturally, this love triangle is one of the most talked-about subplots of the show—so we scored inside scoop about it straight from Dyer and Keery. The actors have some interesting thoughts about where Nancy and Steve are headed—and where Jonathan fits into the mix. Read on to learn more.

The best scenes in this season have nothing to do with the Upside Down and everything to do with the relationships among the characters. What about for you?

Natalia Dyer: “For me, this show is much more about the characters and the relationships. It’s always been such an ensemble show. That’s my favorite part. I find it’s very character-driven. The Duffers take these ’80s tropes and really flush them out and give the characters complexity. A lot of it comes from the writing. I love how everyone relates to each other, and it’s fun to see how they do it in different ways.”

So what’s your interpretation of where Steve and Nancy are by the end of the last episode?

Joe: “At the end of season one, we were kind of pretending that nothing happened. We were holding each other back in a certain way—but in order to move forward, we had to go to these separate places. It first seemed this season like she was hurting him, and he takes it as Nancy just hurting him, but they both have to progress forward. To do that they have be apart. They both have had to come to terms with that. They realize why they were attracted to each other in the first place, and that those things still exist. But I also don’t think they’re going to force each other to be together.”

Natalia: “They definitely care about each other and still love each other, but you’re totally spot on, Joe, in that they have to figure themselves out apart from each other. After the end of season one, their relationship was a bit of a safety blanket. For that to be healthy, you have to figure out what it is outside of that safety blanket.”

Joe: “And you never really forget your first love.”

Do you think they’re right for each other?

Joe: “I think about at that age, and who I was at least, the amount that I’ve changed…I’m such a different person, and I can only imagine that they’ll continue to change as well. It’s so hard to say if they’re destined to be together. Maybe it will work out, but I do know that he cares about her more than anyone he’s cared about in his life. He loves her and is worried about her, but he has to grow, too.”

What about their relationship works? And what are some reasons they aren’t great together?

Natalia: “I think there’s a good balance between them, and they are each other’s first love. That’s a very strong thing! They really, really do care about each other. They’ve gone through an experience that’s really bonding in a way, but they need to figure themselves out. I think, like any relationship, something’s going on. They may need to be away from each other and figure out their stuff and see where that puts both of them.”

Joe: “Oh man, there are things I learned about their relationship this year that are kind of telling. It makes me not so sure. In the first season, it’s this love sick thing—they’re both in the throes of beginning this relationship. Then when you catch up with them at the beginning of season two, you can see that there are some issues dealing with what happened. In season two, one of the big arcs for Steve is this transformation. It’s a growing-up story for Steve. He learns how to put people before himself, specifically Nancy and the people that he loves. That’s something he hasn’t had to do before.”

What does Charlie Heaton (Jonathan) think about Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan’s love triangle? Does he have an opinion?

Joe: “I don’t think we necessarily have like opinions, like, ‘Oh man…” But because we are playing the characters, we do have these ideas of what we think will happen or why the characters are kind of right for each other. I can’t really speak on behalf of Charlie, but what I can say is that Charlie does such unbelievable work this year. He’s one of the people on the show that I would love to work more with. I really think he’s such a talented guy. I learn so much from that dude being on set.”

Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but Steve takes Dustin to the dance and they have a sweet moment in the car where he gives him advice. Then, later on during the dance, Nancy has a moment with Dustin too. I felt like it was a way of uniting the characters even while they’re apart.

Joe: “He’s our son!” [Laughs]

Natalia: “I really have no idea where that’s going to go for them.”

Every episode of Stranger Things season two is streaming on Netflix now.
