Rachel Brosnahan, Kate Spade's Niece, Appears in the Latest Frances Valentine Campaign

Kate Spade‘s fashion empire and legacy extends beyond her namesake brand to Frances Valentine, the second accessories line founded by the late designer. Today (January 30) Frances Valentine announced that it is paying tribute to its cofounder with a deeply personal, joyful campaign starring a special member of Spade’s family.

Frances Valentine tapped Rachel Brosnahan, Spade’s niece and star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, to front a vibrant spring 2019 campaign honoring her aunt’s memory. Brosnahan appeared on the Today show alongside Frances Valentine CEO Elyce Arons to unveil the campaign and discuss her aunt’s lasting impact on fashion.

“When you lose someone you love very, very much, you spend a lot of time trying to think about how to keep their spirit alive,” Brosnahan said on Today. “In Katy’s case, there is so much of her left behind, and this was an opportunity for us to celebrate her life and her legacy and how much she meant not only to us, but to so many other people and the impact she’s had on the fashion industry.”

In the campaign, Brosnahan models Frances Valentine’s “modern vintage” bags and jewelry alongside outfits that are emblematic of her aunt’s well-known penchant for color. Pieces from the collection include leather bags in mustard yellow and red woven basket bags, oversize pendant earrings, and bow-adorned kitten heels.

“I have always loved Katy’s love of colors and accessories,” Brosnahan said in the brand’s look book. “She brightened up every room she walked into. She also loved classic shapes, but by mixing colors and patterns and adding funky accessories, her personality always shone through.”

When it was time to bring that personality to life in the new campaign, Arons told Glamour, Brosnahan was the perfect fit. “Asking Rachel to be in the campaign was very natural. She is part of Katy’s family and part of the Frances Valentine family,” she said. “It was very organic and easy. Rachel enthusiastically agreed to be in the spring campaign and we were over the moon.”

The campaign captures the sense of optimism and joy legions of shoppers found in Spade’s designs—and in the designer herself. “The spring FV collection reflects Katy’s love of color and modern shapes as well as her love of vintage prints,” Arons said. “Katy had a joyous nature and loved creating things that made people happy. [She] gave women permission to be themselves and to be original.”

Brosnahan remembers her aunt’s personality fondly and carries her memory into the campaign. “Katy led with an almost unparalleled kindness and generosity in both work and life, and firmly believed it was one of the keys to her success. She taught me a great deal about passion and drive but never at the expense of kindness,” she said. “She found joy in every corner of her life and work, and that’s something I will always carry with me.”

Brosnahan’s campaign follows special products that memorialize Kate Spade at Frances Valentine. Last fall the brand released the Kate bag, a boxy tote reminiscent of the Sam bag from Kate Spade New York, to honor its founder. At the time, Arons told Glamour that Frances Valentine would always be informed by Spade’s aesthetic. Spade, she said, “was someone who manifested her personality in every product, so there’s a lot of Katy in everything we do [at Frances Valentine].”

Now Spade lives on in her niece’s image. “Having Rachel as the face of the spring campaign would have made Katy smile,” says Arons.

Hilary Duff Recreated Rachel McAdams' Breast-Pumping Pic, and It's So Good

Hilary Duff is no stranger to getting completely candid about the struggles of being a mom: She’s opened up about having a “hard as hell” pregnancy, shared her method for dealing with mommy-shamers, and shut down the Internet trolls who criticized her version of a “mom bod.” But Duff’s most recent Instagram tops them all.

Last month, a shot of Rachel McAdams posing for Girls. Girls. Girls. wearing Versace and her breast pump went viral. McAdams was praised by the Internet and heralded as a “true queen” for this empowering moment for moms everywhere.

So on Friday, Duff—who welcomed her second child last October—decided to get in on the fun and recreate McAdams’ iconic pic. She wasn’t decked out in couture, either; instead Duff’s pic featured her in a shower cap, coat, and white button-down top on her couch—along with a breast pump. She captioned the photo, “Am I doing this right?”

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and in this case, they’re totally right. The more celebrities normalize breast pumps and the journey mothers go through, the better.

Banks Violet Blair, who arrived October 25, 2018, is Duff’s first child with boyfriend Matthew Koma. Her son, Luca, is from her previous marriage to Mike Comrie. During her pregnancy with Banks, she also took to Instagram to shed light on the difficulties of pregnancy.

“Man…pregnancy is hard,” Duff wrote. “Giving love to all mamas who make it look effortless…. This journey is hard as hell and also incredibly special. Lovely to have a little life inside and to day dream of all the new adventures to come buuuut almost impossible to get my own shoes on..sick of getting up 9 times a night to pee and looking at this weird body in the mirror that is not my own at the moment. Women are so bad ass, this was just a note to remind myself and remind others how’s strong and beautiful you are! WE GOT THIS.”

Here’s to seeing more of our female celebrities getting refreshingly honest about motherhood in 2019.

Rachel McAdams Wore Versace and a Breast Pump for Her Latest Magazine Photo Shoot

Rachel McAdams has been keeping a low profile lately—in fact, she kept her recent pregnancy seriously under wraps, and has only just started to speak publicly about her 7-month-old son with boyfriend Jamie Linden. But in her latest fashion editorial, the actress is sending a message to new moms like her.

McAdams appears on the cover of Girls. Girls. Girls., photographed by Claire Rothstein, the magazine’s founder and editor. In the shoot, she’s wearing designers like Adam Selman, Cushnie, Bulgari… and, in one picture, Versace and a breast pump. The photographer shared the story behind that last look on her personal Instagram.

“Obviously #rachelmcadams looks incredible and was quite literally the dream to work with but also this shoot was about 6 months post her giving birth to her son, so between shots she was expressing/pumping as still breastfeeding,” Rothstein wrote in the caption. “We had a mutual appreciation disagreement about who’s idea it was to take this picture but I’m still sure it was hers which makes me love her even more.”

“Breastfeeding is the most normal thing in the world and I can’t for the life of me imagine why or how it is ever frowned upon or scared of,” Rothstein continued. “I don’t even think it needs explaining but just wanted to put this out there, as if it even changes one person’s perception of something so natural, so normal, so amazing then that’s great. Besides she’s wearing Versace and Bulgari diamonds and is just fucking major. Big shout out to all the girls.”

McAdams certainly does look amazing—and anything that helps make breastfeeding something everyone feels comfortable speaking about is a good thing. Since Rothstein shared the image and the story behind it, social media users have been praising the actress. “HELLO WORLD. THIS IS RACHEL MCADAMS BREAST PUMPING IN VERSACI AND BULGARI. I HAVE NEVER SCREAMED SO HARD IN MY LIFE,” one tweeted. Another called McAdams a “true queen” for pumping during her shoot.

McAdams told People that motherhood “the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me, hands down.” She hasn’t shared much on the topic, but in this case, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Rachel Brosnahan and Michael Zegen on That Final Scene in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's Season 2 Premiere

Pick any scene in the season two premiere of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—really, any scene—and it will show you just how brilliant Rachel Brosnahan is as stand-up comedian and Upper West Side divorcée Midge Maisel. (She didn’t win that Emmy for nothing…) But if I had to pick a scene that stayed with me long after the episode ended, it’d be that heartbreaking last one.

In the four-minute moment—stop reading now if you haven’t watched—Midge is swept up in emotion while she watches couples kiss in Paris. It’s romantic and gorgeous, but Midge is miserable. It serves as a reminder of what she used to have—or rather, what she thought she had. Out of loneliness and fear, Midge phones estranged husband, Joel (Michael Zegen), in New York to get back together. Yes, the same Joel who cheated on her with his secretary.

The moment could have been a disaster, but it ends up being a showcase of expert storytelling in the hands of co-creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino. The scene somehow humanizes Joel, while still making your heart break for Midge. She wants to make their marriage work; Joel does, too, but he knows he can’t. After seeing his wife shine on stage—in a way he never could—he realized he’d be holding her back. The very thing Midge excels at, finding humor in the devastation she felt because of Joel, is the one obstacle he can’t get past. He doesn’t want her to stop performing, but he also can’t be with her because of it.

PHOTO: Nicole Rivelli

The scene is so good, it may come as a surprise that it was filmed in under two hours and without any formal rehearsal. It was also a big concern for Brosnahan and Zegen after they read the script. The phone call represents a big shift for the Maisel’s relationship, and Brosnahan wanted to make sure it stayed authentic to her character. “To be honest, I was so frustrated by that scene when I first read it,” she tells us. “We spent season one establishing that when Midge gets hurt she doesn’t cry, she gets funnier. This scene really broke that rule. I had a little bit of a hard time pushing past that, because when Joel left, Midge didn’t cry. She got on stage. Here it really breaks her.”

Zegen felt the same way. “I also had problems with it,” he says. “I didn’t really understand where Joel was coming from. He’s telling Midge that he can’t be with her, even though he tried to get back with her over and over again.” Plus, as Brosnahan notes, “They had all but gotten together immediately before that moment [in the season one finale], which is what Midge was saying.”

But, “The key thing Joel tells her is, ‘I can’t be a joke,'” Zegen says. “I think that really says a lot. [Her comedy] is completely embarrassing, not to mention emasculating, for him.”

Sherman-Palladino understood the actors’ concerns and walked them through the scene. “[She explained] that so much has changed for them over the course of the first season, and I think ultimately what breaks from this one is there’s something that feels even more permanent about this,” Brosnahan says. “No one cheated [this time] and no one walked out the door. They’re just at a crossroads, and in that moment they are both choosing to walk different ways. That’s what’s so heartbreaking about this. It shows how much they have grown and evolved over the course of the first season.”

Once Brosnahan and Zegen hammered out the specifics of the scene, Brosnahan says she was really able to sink her teeth into the moment—especially when Joel says, “I love you too, honey, and you’re going to be OK.” Midge hangs up the phone and collapses in tears before walking away. “That moment was the one that felt the most clear to me of that whole scene,” Brosnahan says. “Amy just let me walk with it; in that moment, she and Joel have said everything they want to say and are both choosing to walk away. It breaks my heart because [the scene shows] you can love someone that much and know you’ll never be together.”

Brosnahan also hints that even if Midge and Joel do get back together, it may never stick. “Early on, before we even shot the pilot, I was asking Amy where Midge is [theoretically] headed,” Brosnahan says. “She told me—and this still breaks my heart—that Midge will go on to be wildly successful, live in a penthouse apartment on Park Avenue with 12 poodles, and will have everything she could have imagined this new dream to become. But, she’ll still remember the day before Joel left her as the happiest day of her life. So I think the moment [with the two of them on the phone] is the beginning of her journey toward that path. I do believe they’re soulmates, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be together.”

The second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

*Saved by the Bell* Star Tiffani Thiessen Almost Played Rachel on *Friends*

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Jennifer Aniston playing Rachel on Friends, but apparently fans came very close to having an entirely different ’90s icon arguing on-screen with Ross over whether they were “on a break.”

In a new interview on Nikki Glaser’s podcast, You Up, Saved by the Bell star Tiffani Thiessen, a.k.a. Kelly Kapowski, revealed that she had auditioned for the role of Rachel. “Do you know I tested for Friends for Jennifer Aniston? I did,” she said.

Sadly, Thiessen wasn’t the right fit, she said, because she wasn’t quite as old as the rest of the cast members. “I was just a little too young,” she continued. “A little too young to the pairing of the rest of them.”

“That makes sense to me, because you are both such amazing comedic actresses,” Glaser told Thiesen, and the Saved by the Bell star agrees that Jennifer Aniston is “very, very funny.”

Thiessen isn’t the only star who almost replaced one of the core six in their spots on the Central Perk couches. 30 Rock‘s Jane Krakowski also auditioned for the part of Rachel, and Will and Grace‘s Eric McCormack tried out for Ross. Vince Vaughn tried out for Joey, Jon Cryer for Chandler, Leah Remini for Monica, and Kathy Griffin for Phoebe. Let’s just say Friends could easily have been a completely different show.

Though she didn’t wind up living in the iconic purple-walled apartment alongside Monica and the rest of the gang, Thiessen is now starring in a new sitcom on Netflix called Alexa & Katie, out now. All’s well that ends well.

Rachel Mitchell Has Been Chosen By Republicans To Question Kavanaugh And Christine Blasey Ford

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused him of an incident of sexual assault in 1982, are scheduled to testify Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

At the hearing, they’ll both face Rachel Mitchell, an Arizona prosecutor with decades of experience, chosen by Republican lawmakers to assist with the fielding of questions.

The committee’s chair Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) announced the decision to hire Mitchell in a statement on Tuesday, saying that he was committed to “providing a forum to both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh on Thursday that is safe, comfortable and dignified.”

“The majority members have followed the bipartisan recommendation to hire as staff counsel for the committee an experienced career sex-crimes prosecutor to question the witnesses at Thursday’s hearing. The goal is to de-politicize the process and get to the truth, instead of grandstanding and giving senators an opportunity to launch their presidential campaigns,” he continued in the statement. “I’m very appreciative that Rachel Mitchell has stepped forward to serve in this important and serious role. Ms. Mitchell has been recognized in the legal community for her experience and objectivity.”

Here’s what we know so far about Mitchell:

  • Mitchell is a registered Republican who has served as a prosecutor since 1993. To make the committee hearing, she took a leave from her positions as Deputy County Attorney in the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in Phoenix and the Division Chief of the Special Victims Division, which investigates sex-crimes and family-violence.

  • She has overseen a number of high-profile cases, including one in which former Catholic priest Paul LeBrun was accused of molesting young boys in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was found guilty.

  • The New York Times reports that Mitchell has been an advocate of “strengthening sex assault laws in the state and has pushed for changes in the courtroom to comfort victims testifying in abuse cases.” She also spent a number of years supervising attorneys who handled sexual assault, child molestation and prostitution, and computer crimes against children, according to Fox.

But the decision to have Mitchell question Ford and Kavanaugh doesn’t sit well with Democrats, who have pushed back against the decision to have a prosecutor do the cross-examination, arguing that Ford—who claims Kavanaugh held her down and tried to take off her clothes when they were both in high school—is not on trial.

Senator Kamala Harris, one of the members of the committee, tweeted on Tuesday, “Dr. Blasey Ford isn’t on trial. This hearing is to determine whether Kavanaugh is qualified to sit on the Supreme Court. By hiring a private attorney to cross-examine Dr. Blasey Ford, Republicans are trying to intimidate her and avoid being held accountable by voters.”

Ford’s lawyer Michael Bromwich also weighed in by sending a note to Grassley, in which he expressed concern over Mitchell.

“This is not a criminal trial for which the involvement of an experienced sex-crimes prosecutor would be appropriate,” he wrote. “Neither Dr. Blasey Ford nor Judge Kavanaugh is on trial. The goal should be to develop the relevant facts, not try a case.”

Grassley said in his statement that he “promised Dr. Ford that I would do everything in my power to avoid a repeat of the ‘circus’ atmosphere in the hearing room that we saw the week of September 4.” Many have pointed out that Mitchell may be a better option to question Ford than one of the 11 male Republican members on the majority side of the committee.

Kavanaugh, who has denied the allegations, has now been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women. It is not clear how the new claims will factor into Thursday’s hearing.
