Rachel Brosnahan, Kate Spade's Niece, Appears in the Latest Frances Valentine Campaign

Kate Spade‘s fashion empire and legacy extends beyond her namesake brand to Frances Valentine, the second accessories line founded by the late designer. Today (January 30) Frances Valentine announced that it is paying tribute to its cofounder with a deeply personal, joyful campaign starring a special member of Spade’s family.

Frances Valentine tapped Rachel Brosnahan, Spade’s niece and star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, to front a vibrant spring 2019 campaign honoring her aunt’s memory. Brosnahan appeared on the Today show alongside Frances Valentine CEO Elyce Arons to unveil the campaign and discuss her aunt’s lasting impact on fashion.

“When you lose someone you love very, very much, you spend a lot of time trying to think about how to keep their spirit alive,” Brosnahan said on Today. “In Katy’s case, there is so much of her left behind, and this was an opportunity for us to celebrate her life and her legacy and how much she meant not only to us, but to so many other people and the impact she’s had on the fashion industry.”

In the campaign, Brosnahan models Frances Valentine’s “modern vintage” bags and jewelry alongside outfits that are emblematic of her aunt’s well-known penchant for color. Pieces from the collection include leather bags in mustard yellow and red woven basket bags, oversize pendant earrings, and bow-adorned kitten heels.

“I have always loved Katy’s love of colors and accessories,” Brosnahan said in the brand’s look book. “She brightened up every room she walked into. She also loved classic shapes, but by mixing colors and patterns and adding funky accessories, her personality always shone through.”

When it was time to bring that personality to life in the new campaign, Arons told Glamour, Brosnahan was the perfect fit. “Asking Rachel to be in the campaign was very natural. She is part of Katy’s family and part of the Frances Valentine family,” she said. “It was very organic and easy. Rachel enthusiastically agreed to be in the spring campaign and we were over the moon.”

The campaign captures the sense of optimism and joy legions of shoppers found in Spade’s designs—and in the designer herself. “The spring FV collection reflects Katy’s love of color and modern shapes as well as her love of vintage prints,” Arons said. “Katy had a joyous nature and loved creating things that made people happy. [She] gave women permission to be themselves and to be original.”

Brosnahan remembers her aunt’s personality fondly and carries her memory into the campaign. “Katy led with an almost unparalleled kindness and generosity in both work and life, and firmly believed it was one of the keys to her success. She taught me a great deal about passion and drive but never at the expense of kindness,” she said. “She found joy in every corner of her life and work, and that’s something I will always carry with me.”

Brosnahan’s campaign follows special products that memorialize Kate Spade at Frances Valentine. Last fall the brand released the Kate bag, a boxy tote reminiscent of the Sam bag from Kate Spade New York, to honor its founder. At the time, Arons told Glamour that Frances Valentine would always be informed by Spade’s aesthetic. Spade, she said, “was someone who manifested her personality in every product, so there’s a lot of Katy in everything we do [at Frances Valentine].”

Now Spade lives on in her niece’s image. “Having Rachel as the face of the spring campaign would have made Katy smile,” says Arons.

Frances Valentine Is Bringing Back Kate Spade's Most Iconic Bag in Her Honor

Though her name appears on the labels and stores of the brand she co-founded in the early ’90s, Kate Spade spent the last few years overseeing Frances Valentine, the accessories line she started in 2016. She worked on it until she passed away in early June, and her business partner Elyce Arons has said that Spade left four completed seasons, plus plenty of other concepts for the label, that have yet to be released. Plus, this fall, Frances Valentine is honoring its leader and her legacy by bringing back her first—and best-known—bag.

On September 6, Frances Valentine introduced the Kate bag, named after the late designer, and inspired by the iconic tote she launched Kate Spade New York with in 1993. It’s still nylon and boxy, and it comes in four colors: red, green, navy, and black. It’s available on Frances Valentine’s e-commerce site, as well as at Barneys New York, one of the first retailers to carry Spade’s designs, back in the early 1990s. The Kate bag retails for $195.

“Katy created the exact bag that she wanted to carry herself,” Arons, Frances Valentine’s managing partner, tells Glamour. “She loved simple, clean lines, square shapes, and functionality. The bag felt modern and essential when Katy first designed it—and it still does. It’s stylish, smart, and colorful, just like Katy.”

Arons adds: “We wanted to honor Katy and celebrate her creative spirit from the beginning… Frances Valentine is where Kate Valentine Spade’s designs and ideas live, and we wanted to recognize one of her iconic creations and show it alongside the new work of Kate Valentine Spade.”

When the style was introduced at Kate Spade New York, it was known as the Sam bag—and over the years, it became one of the most emblematic and easily-recognizable pieces of the brand’s collection. Spade and her husband and co-founder, Andy, left the company in 2007, but the Sam remained a core part of Kate Spade New York’s DNA. In honor of its 25th anniversary, for Spring 2018, under the creative direction of Deborah Lloyd, the brand re-released the Sam bag.

Arons describes Spade’s design hallmarks as always being “clever, classic, architectural, and very essential. She had an irrepressibly joyous nature and that showed in everything she did.” The designer “was someone who manifested her personality in every product, so there’s a lot of Katy in everything we do [at Frances Valentine].”

Frances Valentine’s Kate bag has a give-back component, too: 20% of each sale will go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “Katy gave a lot of her time and resources to others, and focused mainly on children’s causes,” says Arons. “We thought a lot about which program to support, but in the end, Boys & Girls Clubs of America was an easy choice: Katy would like it, it’s a terrific organization that has lasting impact on the lives of young people, and it’s a national organization that touches so many.”

“She had a need to create, and made Frances Valentine her design home,” Arons continues. “We have an enormous conceptual library of Katy’s work that’s yet to be realized. We intend to keep her creativity and designs alive in Frances Valentine.”

Kate Spade's Iconic Sam Bag is Coming Back in Spring 2018

It’s official: Everyone’s first Kate Spade New York bag is back in style. At the brand’s Spring 2018 presentation during New York Fashion Week, Chief Creative Officer Deborah Lloyd revealed that the iconic Sam tote—yes, that boxy, nylon handbag you swung around with such glee back in the day—will make a triumphant return, just in time for the company’s 25th anniversary.

At this point, we’re pretty used to seeing nostalgic trends crop up on the Fashion Week runways, but the return of the Sam bag is one worthy of our collective excitement: This black, waterproof tote put Kate Spade New York on the map when it first appeared in the early ’90s. And though it’s been off the brand’s shelves for a while now, shoppers freak out every time the style pops up on the resale market. (While Nordstrom seems to have left their sale page up, the Sam hasn’t been sold as-new in years.)

Lloyd knows how attached we all were to our first Kate Spade New York handbag—and how eager brand loyalists are for the Sam’s comeback. “I think that bag started Kate Spade 25 years ago, but it’s still relevant today,” she tells Glamour backstage at the Spring 2018 presentation in New York “So many people that speak to you about that bag say, ‘Oh my goodness, it was my first bag!’ It became one of the first it bags.” She says that customers “are always wanting to see the Sam back [again].”

In the designer’s mind, the Sam bag falls among the Kate Spade New York classics—”something that a girl goes back to again and again,” she explains. “It really is her go-to piece that she can trust, that will get her through the day. So whether it is the perfect dress from Kate Spade, whether it’s a pair of shoes, whether it is that Sam bag, it’s her trusty companion that makes her feel good about herself.”

But the 2018 version of the Sam won’t look exactly like the one you wore to bits in middle school: Lloyd promises that there are plenty of modern updates to the classic, including new materials like leather, wicker, and all sorts of embroidery. “With fashion, everything needs a little bit of an evolution, because what you pick up [from] 25 years ago doesn’t always look right,” she jokes of the O.G. Sam. “So there was a little bit of an evolution in how we manufactured it. But basically, we have the classic Sam in the black nylon come back with a new logo treatment, which is loud and proud! [And] we have played with it as our palette to express the year.”

Of course, any Sam needs a full look to pair it with—so Lloyd says there’s plenty of exciting ready-to-wear alongside the beloved tote in Kate Spade New York’s latest collection. The look to cop? Flora and fauna prints and bold colors inspired by a road trip around the United States—starting in New Orleans. “I love the spirit of this collection, which is based on New Orleans and Southern charm,” Lloyd says. “We’re an American brand at heart, so it’s really nice to celebrate America and the American girl, for this 25th anniversary.” (To get into the theme, a New Orleans brass band ushered in the Spring 2018 models, and guests snacked on beignets and coffee at the presentation.)

While we can’t get our hands on the newest Sam bag iteration just yet (think of all the #TBT photo opportunities!), there are plenty of gorgeous photos from Kate Spade New York’s Spring 2018 presentation to obsess over until then. And when they’re finally on the market, they’ll go quick—so get ready.
