Twilighting Is the Prettiest New Hair Trend for 2020

While Twilighting might sound like an elaborate vampire role play situation, it’s actually the coolest new hair trend for this winter. The name (sadly) has nothing to do with Robert Pattinson, instead it’s inspired by the golden hues swirled through the sky at sunset.

Karissa Schaudt, colorist at Chicago’s Maxine Salon coined the term, and predicts the shade will be huge for 2020. Like this fall’s tweed hair, twilighting relies on a mix of balayage (highlights directly painted on your hair) and babylights (super fine, subtle highlights using foil) to create a natural, dimensional look. Schaudt describes the shade as “brunette with warm undertones, meaning the color is reflecting golden hues.” (Think Miranda Kerr and Jennifer Garner’s hair colors.) She says it’s perfect for those with darker hair who want to try something trendy, but not too drastic.

If you’re thinking this is literally just brown hair with golden highlights, well, you wouldn’t be wrong. That’s basically what it is. But it’s also insanely pretty and a low-maintenance way to warm up brown hair that works from season to season. Schaudt recommends this shade for her clients who want to keep some brightness around their face but have a multi-dimensional look.

The key to making the highlights look natural instead of chunky is the mix of highlighting techniques used. “This is a perfect balance of foiling and balayaging,” says Schaudt. “The placement of each serves a specific purpose. Unlike a foil where the highlights are concentrated evenly from roots to ends, twilighting marries the two techniques to produce a result that’s natural but bold.”

When talking to your stylist about this shade, the word “dimensional” is key. Ask for a mix of highlighting techniques, and “request that the brightness be around your face while the depth be left towards the back,” says Schaudt. And as always, it helps to bring in photos of what you have in mind.

For your convenience, we pulled some of our favorite examples, below. Now all you have to do is call your salon.

Meghan Markle Wore the Prettiest, Spring-iest Green Dress—and It's Actually Not Sold Out Yet

After months of us wondering when it will finally start to feel like springtime, Meghan Markle went ahead and kicked things off with the prettiest green floral-print dress—and if you feel like a little splurge, it seems like the “Meghan Markle Effect” (a.k.a. when Meghan wears something and it subsequently sells out in .02 seconds) hasn’t taken hold quite yet.

On Saturday she stepped out in a perfectly floaty Self-Portrait dress to attend the Invictus Games Sydney celebration reception with her fiancé Prince Harry. The event, hosted by Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, was held in anticipation of the Sydney games in October—one of the first international trips Meghan and Harry will take together as a married couple.

Obsessed with the Royals? Same. Click here to get Meghan Markle updates—and more—from Glamour’s daily newsletter.

Lately Meghan has opted for a more neutral wardrobe, though she hasn’t shied away from taking royal style risks by ignoring traditional expectations that she wear nude stockings, refrain from having her hair in a messy bun, and avoid ripped jeans. This time, not only are her legs bare, but she’s veered away from neutrals with this bright green midi-dress featuring delicate little cut-outs and ruffles.

The future royal paired her $510 Self-Portrait Cold Shoulder Floral Dress with a $1,995 Alexander McQueen Grain de Poudre Wool Blazer.

Meghan wore the same blazer as part of her pantsuit look in February when she attended the Endeavour Fund Awards in London, where she gave her first-ever royal speech. It’s such a gorgeous (and, let’s be honest, pricey) staple piece that we’re sure we’ll see a few more royal re-wears of it. After all, the royal couple has been paying for Meghan’s wardrobe on their own since they can’t accept freebies from designers. Once they’re married, however, the royal clothing budget will kick in—and who doesn’t love that?

'Mulled Wine Hair' Is Winter's Prettiest, Coziest Hair Color Trend

‘Tis finally the season for mulled wine, that warming, sweet winter adult beverage made of boxed red wine, brandy, oranges, and a handful of the most delicious spices you can find. Truly dedicated fans, however—or, hey, just anyone who wants to switch up their hair to a new gorgeous shade for winter—will want to note the latest hair color trend that’s been popping up all over Instagram lately. Behold, the jammy, plummy tones of “mulled wine hair.”

The color is marked by a deep berry-red base hue—the same shade as that Bordeaux you just poured into the saucepan to simmer—with undertones of cinnamon and orange. It’s kind of like the purple-red hair color that was popular in the ’90s, but the multidimensional tones in this shade, plus an updated cut, make it firmly of this year.

Ultimately, it’s more soothing and less in-your-face—plus, the sheer variety of tone combinations you can explore means that there’s a right shade of mulled wine for just about anyone. Lighter skin tones might opt for a brighter berry, while darker skin tones might steer toward the rich merlot shades, Allure reports.

The end results look seriously pretty, whether you go for all-over color…

…or focus on balayage and highlights.

It’s not been the first time a trending shade has been named after a favorite beverage (this fall’s “Cream Soda Hair” is a notable example), but there’s something so warm about this shade that we’re reaching for our mugs and cozy wool throws pretty much as we write this.

Of course, this Bordeaux shade has been having quite a moment lately—hello, eye shadow and Kate Middleton’s wardrobe—but adding it to the world of hair color? Beautiful.

Mermaid Makeup Tutorial Halloween 2017: The Prettiest Mermaid Costume to Try

Halloween: It’s coming. And unless you’ve been living under a rock (or, ahem, the sea), you’ve probably noticed mermaid makeup splashed all over your Instagram and Pinterest feeds. (It’s one of the highest searched Halloween costumes for 2017!) But here’s where it gets tricky: Half the stuff out there looks like you need Kim Kardashian’s entire glam squad to pull it off. While it’s definitely a makeup look that requires some skill in the contouring and smoky eye department, it is 100 percent possible to do in your bathroom at home.

We tapped Make Up For Ever Director of Education and Artistry Lijha Stewart (who’s also known as the “Queen of Halloween”) to demonstrate exactly how to create mermaid makeup, step-by-step. Let’s get started.

Level of difficulty: We won’t sugarcoat it: on a scale of 1 to 5, this is a 4. It’s intricate, messy (we spilled an entire jar of glitter during the process, oops), and takes some patience. We recommend practicing the mermaid scales a day or two before you do the whole thing.

Amount of time required: Plan to set aside around two hours if you’re aiming to get every tiny detail just so. (And that’s only the makeup. Dinglehoppering not included.)

What you’ll need:
Highlighter
-Colorful eyeshadows (we used purple, pink, and teal)
-Glitter
-White liquid eyeliner
-Translucent powder
False eyelashes
-Fishnet stockings
A makeup sponge

And away we go…

In order to get the best outcome possible (read: to make sure your makeup doesn’t look cakey), complexion prep is a must. The key is to start with a lightweight foundation, like Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation, that’ll provide a smooth base for layering. Apply it with a damp makeup sponge so it’s soft and airy, then set your base with a fluffy brush and light dusting of translucent powder, making sure to powder under your eyes to eliminate creasing. Next (and this step is very important) add as much highlighter as possible. “Put it all over,” says Stewart. With another fluffy brush (we used the Make Up For Ever 122 Blending Brush) focus it on areas she called “points of intensity,” in other words: your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, your cupid’s bow, shoulders, and clavicle. After that, style your brows as you prefer to wear them; they won’t be touched past this point.

Some highlighters we love: Make Up For Ever Star Powder #940, $20; Maybelline Face Studio Master Strobing Stick, $7.99; E.l.f. Cosmetics Baked Highlighter, $8.89

No mermaid is complete without her mermaid eyes. We used two different purple tones here, but feel free to use whatever colors you want (pinks or blues would be dreamy here, too!). To make sure it lasts all night, apply a cream eyeshadow (like Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream) with your fingers first and layer a matching powder shade on top, focusing the darker color in the outer corners. For that super smoky effect, use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend the colors outward toward your temples. If you blend too much, you can always go back in with the darker color. (See here and here for two more basic—but still gorgeous—smoky eye techniques if you need them.)

Our favorite purple eyeshadows: Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow in Electric Purple, $21; NYX Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Harlequin, $4.98; L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eyeshadow in Perpetual Purple, $5.96

The key to making winged liner look more mermaid and less cat? Opt for a vibrant white liquid liner on top. “It won’t work unless it’s liquid,” says Stewart, noting that a pigmented, non-streaky option is crucial. Next, apply a regular white pencil eyeliner on your bottom waterline to open up your eyes. Warning: If you’re not used to wearing anything there, it might feel odd for a few minutes, but that’ll pass! Fake lashes are obviously optional, but if you want to get fancy, here’s our handy guide for doing it yourself. We used Make Up For Ever Lash Show Creative Impact False Lashes, $18. Otherwise, finish things off with a generous helping of your favorite volumizing mascara.

The best white eyeliners: Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner #16 ($23); NYX Cosmetics Liquid Liner in White, $6.99; Too Faced Sketch Marker Liquid Liner in White, $20.

If there’s any time to give the ombré lip trend a go, it’s Halloween. All you need are two colors—we used blue and white—but pink would also be cute here. Start by applying the darker shade in the outer corners of your lips and blending it inward. Then, take the lighter shade and dab it in the center. Blend it out with your fingers and top it off with some highlighter in the middle.

A trio we like: NYX Macaron Lippies in Earl Gray, $16; Maybelline The Loaded Bolds Lip Color in Wickedly White, $5.22;
Make Up For Ever Star Powder #944, $20.

Now for the fun part! For life-like mermaid-looking skin, dust a light layer of teal eyeshadow with a small powder brush in the places you would normally contour; so, the hollows of your cheeks, along your hairline, and underneath your jawline. And don’t be afraid to get creative with it. Add some color underneath your eyes, your nose, or your neck and shoulders.

Teal shadow options: Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow #236, $21; CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Turquoise Glow, $7.99; Circa Beauty Color Focus Eyeshadow in Animated, $18.99

PHOTO: Katie Friedman

This step is optional, but really makes the mermaid feel come to life. Take a clean fluffy brush and dust it on top or adjacent to the teal shadow you put on before. Don’t have pink eyeshadow handy? Blush works just fine.

Pretty pinks: Make Up For Ever Diamond Shadow #850, $21; Sugarpill Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Hotsy Totsy, $11.40; Physician’s Formula Nude Wear Glowing Blush, $6.

PHOTO: Katie Friedman

And finally, the part we warned you about: the scales. This step requires some patience and (likely) a friend. Take fishnet stockings and stretch them out to your desired scale size. Have a friend hold them in place while you pat on your desired color (here we used white eyeshadow) with a damp makeup sponge or a dense brush. To really make it pop, choose a cream formula. Let it dry for about five minutes, but after, lock it in with a translucent powder.

Mermaid scale must-haves: Fishnet stockings, $4; Beautyblender Sponge, $20; Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in Snow, $23.

Now go on with your mermaid self.
