Blake Lively's 'A Simple Proposal' Premiere Manicure Had a Hidden Message

The trailer for A Simple Favor is the best that martinis have looked since Mad Men. Starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, the movie revolves around the very mysterious Emily (Lively), her unlikely friendship with Stephanie (Kendrick), and, going by the trailer, Emily’s deep devotion to drinking martinis and looking stylish. It seems like there’s a Gone Girl-type plot in there too, but from the movie’s promo materials, the martinis play a pretty significant role. And ever the supportive co-star (and lover of a clever, hidden message ), Lively just showed up to New York’s A Simple Favor premiere with a tiny, Swarovski crystal martini on her nails.

To create the miniature martini, Lively’s manicurist, celebrity nail artist Elle, says that she started by painting on two coats of LeChat Dare To Wear nail polish in Black Velvet ($6). She then topped the flat, black color with a selection of Swarovski crystals (it wasn’t quite a J.Lo $100 mani situation, though—the jewels cost only $10). Elle says she was literally going to use magnifying glasses to help her create the martini, but they were lost at the last second, so she placed the crystals in three minutes with her naked eyes.

As for her inspiration, Elle says that after she saw martinis constantly popping up in the film’s press shots, she went for it. What’s more, “it doesn’t hurt that Ryan [Reynolds] just bought a gin company, which also plays a big part in the movie,” Elle says.

A tiny martini glass rendered in jewels may not be your definition of a subtle clue, but Elle says that there was actually more to the mani’s hidden message. She stuck to one martini accent nail on purpose: “This was all about her one special glass, which made it more symbolic of the movie. I won’t say too much more, or I’ll spoil the plot.” Interesting.

For the rest of her nails, Lively chose the gunmetal color of LeChat Dare To Wear polish in Rock the Mic ($7), since it uncannily matched the sheer, glittery black shirt she wore to the New York premiere. Elle says, “She’s been wearing suits as a nod to her character in the movie and for female empowerment as well. She’s standing up for there not being a difference for men and women—her suit was actually worn on the runway by a man.”

Who else just bought their ticket for Friday?

Constance Wu's Hand-Embroidered 'Crazy Rich Asians' Premiere Dress Took 765 Hours to Make

At the red-carpet premiere for Crazy Rich Asians on Tuesday, Constance Wu embraced the extravagance her character Rachel comes face-to-face with in Kevin Kwan‘s 2013 novel and its upcoming film adaptation. The actress went for allout glamour in a gorgeous gown designed by British label Ralph & Russo (yup, the very one that made Meghan Markle‘s engagement portrait dress). And the amount of detail that went into the high-neck, strapless style is truly spectacular.

According to Vogue, Wu’s premiere look took more than 750 hours to make; 490 of those were spent hand-embroidering more than 200,000 Swarovski crystals onto the fabric. If you’re too enthralled by photos of the dress to pull up your calculator app, that translates to more than 31 days spent crafting the garment. Casual.

Micaela Erlanger, Wu’s stylist, told Vogue that, beyond matching the opulent lives of the film’s characters, certain aspects of the “couture red-carpet moment” held even deeper significance for the actres, and for Hollywood as a whole: “In history, tassels have almost always been a symbol of power and prestige, not to mention they make for a glamorous detail. This movie is so important for so many reasons, and I felt that Constance should look both powerful and glamorous.” (Among those reasons? Crazy Rich Asians is the first Hollywood film to feature a majority Asian cast since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club.)

And lest you think that Wu and Erlanger would go easy on the accessories, given how spectacular the gown is, think again. The actress finished off her Ralph & Russo gown with pink pear-cut diamond drop earrings by Lorraine Schwartz that clocked in at a whopping 90 carats. She carried a boxy, reflective silver clutch, and donned sky-high ivory platform pumps with bedazzled stacked stiletto heels. (Hey, Erlanger literally wrote a book on accessorizing, so she wasn’t going to skimp on the add-ons.)

“The gown itself is such a statement, but we really wanted to complete the look with the perfect accessories,” Erlanger told Vogue. Mission definitely accomplished.

Meghan Markle Was Very Much a Part of the *Suits* Season 8 Premiere

Before Meghan Markle was the duchess of Sussex, she was the queen of Suits, a TV show on USA that apparently all your friends secretly watch. It’s a paint-by-numbers legal drama featuring office romances, snappy dialogue, and pencil skirts. Markle’s character, Rachel Zane, partook in all three of those activities, making her a fan favorite for seven seasons. Suits effectively wrapped up Rachel’s storyline in April: After years of back-and-forth, she and Mike (Patrick J. Adams) finally tied the knot. (Coincidentally, Markle’s TV wedding happened just a few weeks before she married Prince Harry.) It was a sweet and poignant ending to a fictional relationship that included lots of in-office make-out sessions.

Well, an almost ending. Rachel Zane was very much a part of the Suits season-eight premiere, which aired Wednesday night. No, Markle didn’t make an appearance in the flesh to reprise her role, but Vulture reports the characters did talk about Rachel and Mike’s new life in Seattle. In an early scene from the premiere, Donna (Sarah Rafferty) helps Rachel’s father, Robert (Wendell Pierce), settle into his new digs at the Zane Specter Litt law firm. “I’m gonna miss her too,” Donna tells Robert after he brings up Rachel, to which he responds, “I’m not sure what’s worse, finding out Mike is a fraud or him taking my daughter away.”

Rachel even made an appearance last night—in the form of a framed photo that also included Mike. “A little welcome-to-the-firm present from your little girl,” Donna says, before giving the photo to Robert. Awww.

Donna and Robert start forming a friendship in the office, which is a nice passing-of-the-torch of sorts, seeing as how she was so close with Rachel for seven seasons. “You think Rachel didn’t tell her father about the mighty Donna Paulsen?” Robert says to Donna. “I guess I never thought of her as much of a chatterbox,” she says cheekily in response. Rejoice, my friends. Rachel Zane lives on.

I wonder if Meghan Markle caught the season premiere from Buckingham Palace.

'This Is Us' Just Announced the Premiere Date for Season 3

Warning: This Is Us spoilers ahead.

It seems like just yesterday fans of This Is Us were crushed by the truth about Jack Pearson’s death, but show-runner Dan Fogelman already has us emotionally preparing for season three.

On Tuesday (June 19), NBC confirmed—via Instagram—that season three will premiere on September 25, 2018 at 9:00 P.M. ET. The video, shared to the This Is Us‘ account, shows a calendar with both Jack and the Big Three’s (Randall, Kate, and Kevin) birthdays marked down on August 31 and September 1, respectively. “There’s no you. There’s no me. There’s just US,” reads the caption, just in case the handwritten hearts and birthday cake didn’t make you weepy enough.

If you watched the season 2 finale, you know that the last five minutes confused fans with a flash-forward in time. Here’s a quick update: Toby is bedridden with depression; Kevin is dating Beth’s cousin, Zoe; and Randall and an older Tess have to go visit someone they have not seen in a long time. Though many fans quickly spiraled with the last scenario, believing that Beth was in danger of dying, Fogelman himself confirmed to Glamour that this is not the case. “We don’t have any other deaths coming in a present day storyline anytime soon,” he said. (Bless.) Fogelman revealed little else about the upcoming episodes, but he did say the new season will be the “most ambitious yet.”

Season three will feature 18 episodes and explore the immediate after-effects of Jack’s death, Miguel and Rebecca’s backstory, and Jack’s young life. Note to self: Buy tissues before September.

Lupita Nyong'o Wore a Spectacular Warrior-Inspired Gown to the *Black Panther* Premiere

To the surprise of exactly nobody, Lupita Nyong’o, who attended the world premiere of Black Panther at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Monday, won the red purple carpet in a dress inspired by her onscreen warrior character. The Oscar winner matched the carpet in a vivid purple custom Versace gown with a long, flowing train, a deep V-neck, and a spiky metallic armor-like overlay embroidered on the bodice that wrapped around her neck, shoulders, and waist, and was dotted with coordinating purple jewels. Nyong’o wore a delicate gold headband around her head and pulled the rest of her hair back into a tall, narrow bun. She accessorized with plum lipstick, a Versace clutch, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, and Beladora vintage rings and earrings in gold, to match her gown’s textured bodice.

“Purple Reign. #BlackPanther #WelcomeToWakanda,” N’yongo captioned a series of photos on Instagram of her in her gorgeous gown. The actress plays Nakia, a “war dog” spy for the fictional African nation of Wakanda and the main love interest of Wakanda’s ruler T’Challa (AKA the Black Panther), in Marvel’s newest movie,

Micaela Erlanger, the star’s longtime stylist, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about Nyong’o’s look. “We found out there was a purple carpet after we had chosen the dress, but it was kind of a perfect reason to go with the gown; I think it’s a new addition to the Lupita rainbow!” she said. “There’s definitely a nod to her warrior character Nakia here, without being costumey. It’s a really glamorous take on our vision and it’s very fierce, certainly.”

Earlier this month, Nyong’o spoke to THR about what made her sign onto Black Panther before she had even read the script. “We were creating an aspirational world where an African people are in charge of their own destiny,” she said. “And that really appealed to me and had the little girl inside me jumping for joy. To just have African people, black people, at the center of that narrative is so exciting.”
