Barack and Michelle Obama’s Anniversary Messages Are the Energy We All Need Right Now


The internet has been…a dismal place, a heat wave hit a huge swath of the country in October, the president of the United States tweeted 14 times before 8 a.m., and it was dark outside when I woke up this morning. Let’s be honest: Americans are on edge.

Enter Barack and Michelle Obama to brighten this bleak moment with their glorious love for each other. Today the former POTUS and FLOTUS celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary. And because they knew we needed it, they let us in on a sliver of their joy. It’s all deeply adorable and the truest of #relationshipgoals.

Let’s start with President Obama, who is completely unafraid to call his wife “babe” in front of the whole wide world. “Like the Beatles said: It’s getting better all the time. Thanks, babe, for 27 amazing years,” he wrote on Instagram alongside a sweet photo of the couple watching the sun set over a beautiful vista.

For her part, the former FLOTUS reflected on the newest stage in their lives, with daughters Malia and Sasha both now in college. “27 years ago, this guy promised me a life full of adventure,” she wrote. “I’d say he’s delivered. Here’s to our next chapter of becoming empty nesters and discovering what’s next—while still feeling the magic that brought us together all those years ago. Happy anniversary, Barack. ?” And just look at the smiles on those crazy kids.

The photos represent the kind of sweet, simple gesture that could make a person believe in love again, or at least decide not all of social media is hot trash.

The Obamas Just Published a Beautiful Tribute to Aretha Franklin


Aretha Franklin, the undisputed Queen of Soul, passed away on Thursday (August 16) after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Several public figures have paid tribute to Franklin on social media, and now Barack and Michelle Obama are adding their voices to the chorus. If you remember, the trio enjoyed a well-publicized friendship while Obama was still in the White House. It began with Franklin putting on a show-stopping, cry-your-eyes-out performance at his first presidential inauguration.

“American has no royalty. But we do have a chance to earn something more enduring,” the Obamas wrote in a statement obtained by TMZ. “Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, Aretha Franklin grew up performing gospel songs in her father’s congregation. For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine. Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel out history, all of it and in every shade — our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance. Aretha may have passed on to a better place, but the gift of her music remains to inspire us all. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace. Michelle and I send our prayers and warmest sympathies to her family and all those moved by her song.”

Obama also released an additional tweet with some of his favorite White House photos of Franklin. “Aretha helped define the American experience,” he added. “In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade — our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace.” Michelle added: “She will forever be our Queen of Soul.”

Obamas Ink Deal With Netflix to Produce TV Shows and Films


More than a year after leaving the White House, the Obamas are ready for their next act—as Netflix producers. The former president and First Lady have signed a deal with the streaming service that’s brought you House of Cards and The West Wing reruns to deliver some real Oval Office insight.

“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” a statement from Barack Obama to The New York Times reads. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix—we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

News of a possible partnership between the Obamas first broke in March, with former adviser Eric Schultz adding a little insight into why they might be pursuing a space in the streaming world when he told the Times, “Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”

Though the forms the Obama-produced content will take will be varied, both films and series, scripted and unscripted, according to the Times, the content of those projects remains unknown. Netflix has created plenty of original content with a very political bent, including its recent documentary Trump: The American Dream, but the Obamas have been relatively quite on political issues since the end of Obama’s second term.

While this marks the couple’s first foray into producing for Netflix, under the umbrella of their new production company, Higher Ground Productions, it isn’t the first time they’ve been a part of Netflix streaming options. The former president was the first guest on the Netflix original series My Next Guest With David Letterman, and his life as a young college student was depicted in the 2016 Netflix film Barry.

The Obamas Shared Their 2017 Christmas Card, and Twitter Caught Some Feelings


‘Tis the time of year to reach out and give back, and former President Barack Obama and the rest of the Obama family are doing just that. Already this holiday season, he transformed himself into Santa to deliver presents to the Greater Washington Boys & Girls Club. And just last month, he brought former FLOTUS Michelle Obama, as well as his royal BFF Prince Harry with him to visit a Chicago high school. But it was the season’s greetings he recently tweeted out that really got Twitter feeling all the feels.

On Monday, Obama wished the world a merry Christmas with the family’s first holiday card since he left office. It prompted Twitter to add a time machine to the top of their wish list: “Please, PLEASE come back!!” some begged. “WE MISS YOU,” others pleaded.

“On behalf of the Obama family, Merry Christmas!” Obama wrote on Twitter. “We wish you joy and peace this holiday season.”

The accompanying photo features a smiling Obama flanked by Michelle, Sasha, and Malia. Some cute little helper elves and a Scooby Doo wearing reindeer antlers (why not?) also pose for the photo, which is backgrounded by a giant Christmas tree.

Honestly, we don’t know that Twitter users have wore their hearts on their sleeves so much since the Obama family released their final White House Christmas card. The tweet quickly racked up 1.4 million likes, nearly 450,000 retweets, and 40,000 comments, many of them begging the then-President and -First Lady to return to office.

Maybe Michelle will change her mind and make #michelle2020 a thing after all. (Hey, the odds are good!)
