‘I Shopped to Cope With Depression—And Racked Up $25K in Credit Card Debt.’

Trigger warning: This post contains descriptions of suicidal ideation.

Six years ago, on a freezing cold morning in Seoul, I made two major decisions. The first was that I wasn’t going to kill myself. And, since I figured I wouldn’t be dying any time soon, I thought I might also try to get myself out of the $25,000 in credit card debt I had amassed.

For roughly two years prior, I was mired in a stagnant, unrelenting depression. My friends and family back home assumed I was fine; I was working abroad, having new and exciting experiences, living with my first boyfriend, enjoying my life by all outward appearances. In reality, I rarely left my apartment. I had some part-time work, but often made excuses and didn’t show up. On the rare occasions I tried to be social, I’d end up feeling lonelier than when I was holed up in my dark bedroom. My only tether to the world was my boyfriend, who I both relied on heavily and deeply resented for allowing me to exist.

I also had credit cards.

Day after day, I’d follow the same routine. I’d wake up, brew a strong pot of coffee, open my laptop, and shop online. I’d spend hours browsing for different things to buy; clothes I’d never wear, household items I didn’t need, gifts for absolutely no one in particular.

Once my purchases were made and those confirmation emails landed in my inbox, I compulsively tracked my orders. When boxes arrived at the house, I actually felt something—happiness? Satisfaction? Pride for a job well done? Whatever it was, it was a welcome change from the emotional rigor mortis I felt the other 99 percent of the time. I was addicted to that feeling. Eventually, I didn’t even pause long enough to open the boxes I’d received before rushing back to my computer to make another purchase, nothingness nipping at my heels.

Kim Kardashian Photoshopped North Into the Family Christmas Card

Although the Kardashian-Jenners have made their holiday card something of a winter tradition, they skipped one this year because they couldn’t get everyone together. Still, that didn’t stop the Kim Kardashian and Kanye West from releasing their own on Friday, December 13. And while it ended up great, Kardashian-West appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week and revealed one secret: She actually had to photoshop North West into the shot after the six-year-old threw a full tantrum and “refused” to be in the shoot.

The card is pretty understated this year, with the family appearing just in gray and white matching outfits. However, Kardashian-West told DeGeneres that it was a ton of work getting her kids North, Psalm, Chicago, and Saint smiling in front of the camera, particularly because North really didn’t want to cooperate. “It’s the most anxiety to get four kids together smiling in a room,” she said. “North was having a day, so she refused to be in the shoot. She just was crying because she wanted her specific hairstyle, whatever.”

Kardashian-West shared she eventually let North do her own thing, but says her daughter had a change of heart after the shoot was over. “I said, ‘Fine, you’re not gonna be in the card. That’s the decision, you’re not gonna be in the card. I’m just going to take the family card without you,’” she said. “And she was fine with that. The next day she woke up and was like, ‘Mommy, I really want to do a card.’”

Still, North had one specific request. “She said, ‘I just want a photo shoot with just you.’ So I said, ‘Perfect,’ I called the photographer, had her come over. I said, ‘I have no makeup on now, I look totally different. Let’s just pretend—shoot us, but cut me out and you’ll photoshop her in.’ And it looks like a beautiful card.”

Even if it took some editing magic, the final product looks so cute.

Kim Kardashian’s 2019 Christmas Card Is Her Most Low-Key Yet

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West revealed their 2019 Christmas card on Friday, December 13, and it’s the family’s most understated yet. Instead of a group pic with their extended fam, Kardashian and West opted to keep things intimate this time around, posing with only their children, North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. The family dressed down in matching gray sweats, with Kanye breaking up the color palette in a crisp white sweater. It’s cozy, simple, and incredibly sweet.

“The West Family Christmas Card 2019,” Kardashian West captioned the photo, which you can see for yourself, below:

This pic is a far cry from the Kardashian family Christmas cards of years past, which have always been massive productions. Need we remind you of last year’s, which almost didn’t come together due to the family’s hectic schedules?

“CHRISTMAS 2018. This year we waited until the last minute to do a card. Schedules were changing, my husband was in and out of town,” Kardashian captioned at the time. “But the day of this card last minute realized we were all together so we had all of our kids come meet us. Kendall and my mom rushed to a meeting after this shoot so this is what we have! As many of us as possible! From our family to yours Merry Christmas.”

Or how about the card from 2015, which featured only the Kardashian-Jenner grandchildren?

It’s been a hectic year for Kardashian West, who welcomed her fourth child, Psalm, via surrogate in May and revealed to Vogue magazine earlier this year she’s studying to become a lawyer. “It’s never one person who gets things done; it’s always a collective of people, and I’ve always known my role, but I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society,” she told the publication. “I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more.”

Of Course Melania Trump’s White House Birthday Card Is Becoming a Meme

It’s Melania Trump‘s birthday, and the White House decided to celebrate by posting a photo of her on social media. “Happy Birthday, @FLOTUS,” the White House wrote on its official Instagram and Twitter pages.

But of course the Internet couldn’t let well enough alone. People on Twitter immediately started turning the photo WH chose into memes. After all, the pic was an interesting choice. It’s of Trump sitting on the far end of a couch, alone, as dozens of paparazzi take her picture. There wasn’t a cute headshot the White House could have posted? A candid? Just this couch photo?

Check it for yourself below. I’m not surprised the memes are rolling in.

Here are just a few (very funny) examples.

This isn’t the first time Melania Trump has been at the center of a White House meme. Remember over the holidays, when people were freaking out over the red Christmas trees the Trumps picked as decorations? Those memes still slay me, TBH.

According to People, Donald Trump said last year he didn’t get a big birthday present for Melania because he was too busy.

“Well, I better not get into that because I may get in trouble,” the President said on Fox & Friends, per People. “Maybe I didn’t get her so much. I tell you what, she has done—I got her a beautiful card. You know, I’m very busy to be running out looking for presents, OK! But I got her a beautiful card and some beautiful flowers.” He did, however, give Melania a shout-out in an email campaign. “Melania is my rock and foundation, and I wouldn’t be the man I am today without her by my side,” he wrote at the time last year.

This is Melania Trump’s third birthday in the White House as FLOTUS.

The Kardashian-Jenner Christmas Card Is Here, and It's Too Cute For Words

Rumors that the Kardashian-Jenners are skipping their Christmas card in 2018 can be put to rest: The annual family photo has arrived, and it’s adorable.

Khloé Kardashian surprised fans on Christmas Eve morning (December 24) with an Instagram post debuting the 2018 Kardashian-Jenner Christmas card. In the sweet, family-centric photo, Khloé, Kourtney, Kylie, and Kim are dressed in head-to-toe white and surrounded by their kids.

“We all wish you love and harmony,” Kourtney said in her post. “So far this is by far my most favorite of any Christmas ✞ I have all I could ever want ✞ FAMILY ✞.” Take a look at the family photo, below.

Khloé was the first of the family to share the photo, but her siblings soon followed with their own posts and holiday messages. Kim Kardashian West explained how the photo came together in her post. “This year we waited until the last minute to do a card,” she said. “Schedules we’re [sic] changing, my husband was in and out of town. But The day of this card last minute realized we were all together so we had all of our kids come meet us.”

Noticeably missing from the crew is Kendall Jenner—but Kim explained why her sibling couldn’t make the final photo: “Kendall and my mom rushed to a meeting after this shoot so this is what we have! As many of us as possible!”

Missing sisters aside, the final product is too cute for words. Matriarch Kris Jenner also shared the card with a touching message: “This year’s Christmas Card is one of my favorites!” she said. “My beautiful girls and my precious grandkids, who bring me so much joy!!”

Although the family waited until Christmas Eve to reveal the card, it wasn’t a total surprise that the tradition would continue. On December 21, Khloé tweeted to a fan that a Christmas card would be coming “very shortly.”

The Kardashian-Jenner clan has taken epic family Christmas photos for years—but the tradition almost ended with 2017’s card. As recently as December 4, Kim Kardashian West had told E! News that the family would forgo its annual holiday shot. (Fans will recall that Kourtney and Kim had a tense fight on the set of last year’s photo.) “I have to say, in thanks to last year’s Christmas card, that really did just f—k us over,” she said. “That was so dramatic.”

Looks like the drama was put aside to festive results—a Christmas miracle indeed.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Christmas Card Is Truly Breathtaking

Kensington Palace shared the photo Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are using for their Christmas card this year, and it’s breathtaking. The shot is from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s May 19 wedding reception. Markle is wearing her stunning white Stella McCartney dress, her and Prince Harry’s backs turned to the camera as they watch a firework show. Is this an ad for a Disney movie or a Christmas card? I’m not sure, but either way I’m completely captivated.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted to share a new photograph from their Wedding Reception at Frogmore House on 19th May,” Kensington Palace shared on Instagram alongside the new pic. “The photograph, which was taken by photographer Chris Allerton, features on Their Royal Highnesses’ Christmas card this year.”

Take a look at the photo for yourself, below.

With everything Markle and Prince Harry have accomplished in 2018, it’s hard to believe this photo was only snapped a few months ago. Their royal wedding was followed by a busy, engagement-filled summer and fall. Markle went on her first solo outing with Queen Elizabeth II in June. Then, four months later, she and Prince Harry embarked on a royal tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand. Right before this trip, Kensington Palace announced Markle and Prince Harry were expecting their first child.

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” the palace posted to both Twitter and Instagram on Monday, October 15. “Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”
