13 Movies and TV Shows Airing This Week That Are Better Than Human Contact


If you’re bummed about Thanksgiving being over, we have two pieces of good news: For one, the December holiday season kicks off this week. (Santa Claus is officially coming to town, people.) But if you’re a Scrooge, maybe these 13 interesting movies, shows, and specials airing this week will put a little pep in your step. After all, nothing cures the post-turkey blues more than the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Glitch: Season two of this peculiar comedy, about a cop whose life implodes when six people in his town magically come back to life, kicks off today. Who says the macabre can’t be funny? Streaming on Netflix

Coming to Netflix in December 2017: 95 Movies and Shows Arriving Just in Time for the Holidays


‘Tis the season…to cancel all your plans and stay inside binge-watching Netflix instead. Seriously, though, why fight the snow and crowds of Christmas shoppers when you can cozy up with a blanket, your beverage of choice, and a classic movie? In fact, Netflix is adding a slew of new titles to the streaming service as early as December 1 to make your nights in even better. The list includes some new originals (like Dark, a Stranger Things-ish mystery), tons of holiday movies (including my all-time favorite While You Were Sleeping), and several family-friendly New Year’s Eve countdown specials.

Many of you are probably headed home for Thanksgiving this week, which is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it’s Thanksgiving! That means no work, yummy food, and sweater weather. On the other hand, it’s Thanksgiving, a full day of awkward meals with your passive aggressive relatives. Tommy Wiseau, a Polish actor, wrote, directed, and starred in the project, which is ridden with narrative flaws and technical difficulties. The movie is so laughably bad that it’s now a cult classic—and the story behind it comes to life in this new (genuinely good) movie starring James Franco. He plays Wiseau, and his performance is so on the nose that it’s downright scary. And Oscar-worthy.

    15 Movies and TV Shows Airing This Week You Can't Miss


    Next week is an interesting stretch for movies and TV: It marks the tail-end of Halloween and the beginning of the holiday season. Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday are full of Halloween movies galore, including the eponymous John Carpenter classic that launched Jamie Lee Curtis’ career. But then we end the week with A Bad Moms Christmas, the seasonal sequel to Mila Kunis’ hit 2016 movie. So many seasons, so little time, am I right? Actually, let’s face it: We all have time to watch these 15 films and TV shows this week. There’s literally nothing else more important. Mark your iCalendars accordingly.

    Carrie: Everyone knows the story at this point: A teenage girl with telekinetic powers burns down her high school prom after the popular kids humiliate her. But Carrie is worth revisiting for its memorable performances by Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie. Sure, the supernatural elements of this film are terrifying, but the scariest bits are simply when the kids are being cruel to Carrie. Honestly, nothing’s more gut-wrenching than that. 9 P.M. ET on the Sundance Channel

    Silence of the Lambs: Another creepy classic to sink your teeth into before Halloween. Both Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins scooped up Oscars for this film, which centers on a rookie detective who enlists the help of a vicious cannibal to catch a serial killer. Don’t worry, though: It’s not nearly as bloody as that description makes it seem. (Well, except for the escape scene. Yeesh.) 6 P.M. ET on BBC America

    Monday, October 30

    Love & Hip Hop: New York The eighth season of VH1’s wildly popular reality series airs tonight. It’ll be sad to watch this chapter without Cardi B while she’s off being a chart-topping superstar. 8 P.M. ET on VH1

    The Conjuring: At the end of the day, the haunted house formula still works. The Conjuring is proof of that; two paranormal investigators poke around a spooky manor they believed is possessed by a malevolent force. It’s eerie, atmospheric, and downright jaw-dropping at times. The perfect pre-Halloween treat. 7 P.M. ET on HBO Signatures

    Tuesday, October 31

    Halloween: You can’t not watch this movie on Halloween. Even after 30-plus years, the tale of teenage Jamie Lee Curtis getting stalked by a masked psychopath still holds up. And by “holds up,” I mean makes you sleep with the lights on for weeks. 7:30 P.M. ET on AMC

    Hocus Pocus: Freeform is playing this campy cult classic all day, if you missed the dozens of showings that we spotlighted last week. Literally all day on Freeform

    Alias Grace This six-episode miniseries, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, centers on Grace Marks, a poor Irish immigrant who was convicted of murdering her boss, Thomas Kinnear, and his maid, Nancy Montgomery, in 1843. Another man, James McDermott, was also convicted for the same crimes, but the two received radically different punishments: He was hanged, while Grace was sentenced to life in prison. The case, which actually happened in Canada, was extremely controversial and polarizing. Did she do it? Or was she just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Watch to find out the truth.     Coming to Netflix in November 2017: 83 Movies and TV Shows Available to Stream Soon


    This November 1, nurse your Halloween candy-corn-induced hangover with all of the new movies and TV shows that will be available on Netflix. There’s something for everyone: films like Scary Movie, Casper, and Oculus for people still in the Halloween spirit, comforting classics like Field of Dreams and Charlotte’s Web for those who want the movie equivalent of a warm blanket, and critically acclaimed dramas like The Reader and The Pursuit of Happyness for sleepyheads who need some mental stimulation.

    The offerings get even better as the month goes on too—especially when it comes to Netflix originals. November brings the debut of Alias Grace, a series based on Margaret Atwood’s historical fiction novel of the same name. You can also expect a new season of Maria Bamford’s brilliant Lady Dynamite, the series adaptation of Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It, and the premiere of the original film Mudbound, which is already getting Oscar buzz.
