Golden Globes 2018 Recap: All the Moments You Need to Know About

The 2018 Golden Globes ceremony, which aired Sunday night (January 7), was more than just an awards show: It was the start of a movement. On January 1, Reese Witherspoon, America Ferrera, and more than 300 other powerful women in Hollywood launched Time’s Up Now, an action plan aimed at eliminating gender imbalance and sexual harassment in the workplace—across all industries. “The struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks, and to simply be heard and acknowledged in male-dominated workplaces must end; time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly,” the organization wrote on its website. So far, Time’s Up has raised more than $15 million in a legal defense fund, which can be accessed by anyone fighting harassment or inequality at work. Keep in mind this organization launched just six days ago—that’s quite a feat.

As is what happened at tonight’s Golden Globes. In a show of solidarity for Time’s Up, dozens of actresses wore all black to the show. Viewers watching at home wore black, too—and so did the people working the actual event, according to E!. This outstanding display of support and sisterhood radiated throughout the evening, which also included powerful speeches by celebrities about the essence of Time’s Up. Here’s everything that went down:

Debra Messing called out E! for not giving Catt Sandler equal pay—while being interviewed on E!

“I was so shocked to hear that E! doesn’t believe in paying their female co-hosts the same as their male co-hosts,” Messing said to Giuliana Rancic on the carpet. Her interview quickly went viral and set the tone for the evening—in the best way possible.

And Eva Longoria did the same thing.

“We stand with Catt,” she said in an interview with Ryan Seacrest, alongside Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.

Seth Meyers’ opening monologue.

The late-night talk show host, who emceed the evening, held nothing back in his opening speech, referencing Harvey Weinstein, President Donald Trump, the recent wave of sexual harassment accusations, and the projects nominated. “It’s 2018,” he said. “Marijuana is finally allowed, and sexual harassment finally isn’t.” He ended things on a serious note, though: “Everyone in this room worked really hard to get here, but it’s clear the women worked even harder. “

Nicole Kidman’s speech for Best Actress in a Limited TV Series or TV Movie.

It was powerful, of course, and she used the opportunity to talk about Time’s Up. “My mama was an advocate for the women’s movement growing up, and because of her I’m standing here. My achievements are her achievements. This character I play represents the center of our conversation right now: abuse. I do believe we can illicit change… Let’s keep the conversation alive,” she said.

Elisabeth Moss read a Margaret Atwood excerpt during her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama.

“This is for all of the women who came before [Atwood] and after [Atwood] who were brave enough to speak up for inequality and injustice,” she said.

Sterling K. Brown praising Dan Fogelman for writing a role specifically for a Black man on This Is Us.

“I’m being seen for who I am … and it makes it that much harder to dismiss me,” he said. He was the first Black actor to win the award at the Golden Globes.

James Franco bringing up Tommy Wiseau during his speech for Best Actor, Musical or Comedy.

Wiseau tried to take the mic. It was instantly iconic.

The end of Laura Dern’s speech for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series, or TV Movie.

“I urge all of us to not only support survivors, but to protect and employ them,” she said. “To teach our children that speaking out without fear of retribution is our new North Star.”

Oprah’s speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

It was the highlight of the evening and caused the audience to give her a standing ovation not once, but twice. “I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon,” she said. “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.” Read the full speech here.

Big Little Lies winning Best Limited TV Series.

Reese Witherspoon, of course, gave a moving speech. “People out there who are feeling silenced—we see you, we hear you and we will tell your story,” she said.

Lady Bird won Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. (And Saoirse Ronan won Best Actress, Musical or Comedy!)

Completely well-deserved, and so exciting.

Natalie Portman calling out the Globes for not having any female director nominees.

Savage.

The Royal Family's Best Moments From 2017

Although it might have been a dumpster fire for the rest of us, 2017 looked like it was certainly a wonderful year for the royal family: There was Pippa Middleton‘s instantly-iconic May wedding, Kate Middleton‘s pregnancy announcement about Baby No. 3 in September, and last, but very certainly not least, the December news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s engagement and their subsequent first Christmas together. (Now if only we could fast-forward to the May 19, 2018, wedding date.) Between these events, of course, were adorable royal toddler birthdays and a very special wedding anniversary.

Here’s a look back at 22 of the royal family’s best moments from 2017, from a queenly encounter with an elephant to a Vanity Fair interview that set the internet ablaze. Read on, royal-watchers: there’s lots a good stuff ahead—and even more to come in the new year. Let the royal baby watch begin!

April 10, that time Queen Elizabeth shook hands with Donna the elephant.

OK, really she was just feeding Donna at the opening of the Whipsnade Zoo’s new Elephant Centre. But it looks like they’re introducing themselves, right? The zoo also introduced a baby elephant named “Elizabeth” for the Queen in honor of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday in 2016.

April 16, when Kate displayed her perfect curtsy.

There was a lot to curtsy about in 2017, but one of our favorites is the curtsy that Kate Middleton did for Queen Elizabeth on Easter Sunday. The love on Kate’s face is so real.

April 30, when the royal family celebrated Princess Charlotte’s second birthday.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge unveiled a new photo of their daughter for the occasion, in which Charlotte looked every bit the royal princess she is.

May 19, when Pippa Middleton got married—and the day was stolen by the adorable Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

We’re guessing their aunt wasn’t even mad that her niece and nephew captured a few hearts on her big day because they were just so hilariously cute and entertaining.

July 16, when Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall turned 70.

And the royal family posted this photo of her smiling next to Prince Charles to prove it.

July 17, when Kate Middleton joked about having “more babies”

Fast-forward to December, and we all know that Kate Middleton is pregnant. But remember back in July when we didn’t, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took Prince George and Princess Charlotte to Poland on the family’s second official outing, and Kate made a joke about having “more babies”? Yeah, that was fun.

July 19, when Princess Charlotte gifted the world an adorable royal curtsy.

It happened when the couple visited Germany. You have to click here to watch the video. But her form! Clearly, she is learning from the best.

July 21, when Prince George got his very own birthday portrait.

You know what they say: what you do for one kid you have to do for the other. So Will and Kate couldn’t not have an official birthday portrait taken of George since they did one for Charlotte. And we’re here for it.

July 8, when Duke William and Prince Harry opened up about Prince Diana publicly for the first time.

Timed to the 20th anniversary of their mother’s death, Will and Harry participated in the TV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy and released some never-before-seen photos from their lives growing up with Diana.

August 2, when Prince Philip retired after 22,219 solo engagements.

Well sort of. It was his final solo appearance at an official event, which is basically the same thing. Since 1952, the Duke “has carried out 22,219 solo engagements, 637 solo overseas visits, given 5,496 speeches, and authored 14 books,” according to the royal family’s official instagram account. Now that he has some more free time, maybe he’ll reconsider watching The Crown?

September 4, when Kate announced that she was pregnant with Baby No. 3.

Kensington Place took to social media to break the news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were “very pleased” to be growing their family by one more baby. Apparently “the Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.” The baby is expected to arrive sometime in April 2018, but William has hinted it could be sooner.

September 5, 2017, when Meghan Markle announced that she and Prince Harry are just “two people who are really happy and in love.”

Day 1: Invictus Games Toronto 2017

Before news of their engagement broke, Meghan Markle gave a revealing interview to Vanity Fair in which she proclaimed for the world to read that she and Harry were “really happy and in love,” and then we did not stop talking about it for months.

September 7, when Prince George showed up for the first day of school.

Look at him shaking hands with a teacher while proud dad Will looks on! Has a more polite student ever existed? And then the family upped the cute by thanking “everyone for all of the kind messages they have received.”

September 25, when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first official public appearance together.

Day 3: Invictus Games Toronto 2017

The blessed moment happened at the Invictus Games in Toronto. They were first spotted at the opening ceremony, though they sat in different seats. But eventually, we got the PDA we’d all been hoping for when they were spotted holding hands and later shared a quick kiss in the stands.

October 31, when Prince Harry joined Michelle Obama to surprise a group of Chicago students.

The former First Lady and Harry joined former President Barack Obama at Hyde Park Academy in Chicago, which is across the street from the future location of the Obama Presidential Center on the South Side of Chicago. Don’t you love this transatlantic bromance?

November 20, when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip marked their 70th wedding anniversary.

The palace released four portraits of the long-long-time couple, taken at Windsor Palace, to mark the occasion. The Queen and Philip married at Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947.

November 27, when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle finally announced their engagement.

After months (and months and months) of speculation, the world celebrated when the royal family finally announced the engagement of Harry and Meghan.

And then we instantly began dissecting everything about the interview they gave to the BBC right after.

December 4, when Kate wore Princess Diana’s tiara.

Diplomatic Reception At Buckingham Palace

Hard to believe that Kate has only worn a tiara six times, which made us all the more glad to see her with her late mother-in-law’s iconic tiara, also known as the Cambridge Lover’s Knot, sitting atop her head.

December 21, when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle released their incredible engagement photos.

The couple said they were “so grateful” for all of the warm wishes they received. They also might be the most photogenic people on the planet.

December 25, when Kate and Meghan (alongside Will and Harry) made first public appearance together at Christmas with the Queen.

They look great together, don’t they? This is also the day we got Meghan’s first-ever public curtsy.

December 27, when Harry interviewed Obama for the BBC.

The bromance is strong with these two.

6 of the Most Bromantic Moments From Prince Harry and Barack Obama's BBC Interview

2017 might have been a garbage, dumpster-fire year (onward, 2018!), but if there were any bright moments, they came when bromancers-in-chief Prince Harry and Barack Obama got together—meetings that caused a spring-like warmth to creep through the chill of the encroaching nuclear winter. And on Wednesday, we were treated to one last 2017 meeting of the world leaders when guest editor Prince Harry sat Obama down for a BBC Radio 4 interview for the ages. “When Harry Met Barry!” the New York Times proclaimed, minus the obviously implied exclamation mark, and to be honest, we can’t say it any better ourselves. Behold, beloveds, six of the most adorable moments from this power couple’s tête-à-tête.

1. When Harry was trying to find people to appear on his edit of the “Today” program, and Obama was like, there for it. According to the Telegraph, when Harry was recruiting people to come on the show, Obama was “the ‘easiest'” guest to get a response from.
2. When they had themselves a cute quickfire round, and Harry asked Obama if he preferred “The Good Wife” or “Suits” (which his fiancée Meghan Markle starred in), and Obama answered “Suits” because of course he did, and Harry just replied, “Great, great answer,” probably blushing like a schoolboy (we imagine).
3. When Obama admitted he’d totally trust Harry’s movie judgement, which is a Big Deal. During the aforementioned quickfire round, Harry asked Obama to choose between White House Down or Olympus Has Fallen, and Obama was all, “I haven’t seen either of them.” So Harry promptly chose White House Down, and Obama said, “OK, I’ll take your word for it.” Then he fist-bumped Harry and asked when the prince wanted to bro out and watch it in the White House cinema and oh wait…?
4. When Obama banged on about Michelle to Harry like a lad. Tricky Harry tried to get Obama to shade President Donald Trump a little bit, but Obama, like the lawyer he is, flipped the question on its head and proceeded to gush about the former FLOTUS instead. Harry asked Barack what was going through his mind when the former First Family flew away from the White House after Trump’s inauguration. Obama smartly expressed gratitude for having Michelle as a partner during his time in politics. “She is a spectacular, funny, warm person. She’s not someone who was naturally inclined at politics,” he said, adding that he felt “a satisfying feeling that was mixed with all the work that was still undone.”
5. When Obama tried to speak Harry’s language and talked about “going to the pub.” Silly Obama—we call them “bars” in America! (But we see what you’re doing.) To be fair, Obama was raising a serious point about the tendency toward isolation that social media creates: “I think social media is a really powerful tool for people of common interests to convene and get to know each other and connect but then it is important for them to get offline, meet in the pub,” he said.
6. When Harry was playing hard to get about Obama’s invite to his upcoming wedding. Sure, inviting Obama and not the Trumps could touch off an international incident, but what’s that between bros, eh? When Harry was asked about whether he’d invite Obama to the wedding toward the end of his segment, he shied around the question. “I don’t know about that—we haven’t even put the invite or the guest list together,” Harry replied. “Who knows if he’s going to be invited or not? I wouldn’t want to ruin that surprise.” Mhm.

The 30 Best Red Carpet Fashion Moments of 2017

Usually, the best red carpet moments worth paying attention to happen twice a year: In the winter during awards season (the SAG Awards, Golden Globes, and Oscars all happen weeks apart) and at the end of the summer (think Emmys, MTV Video Music Awards, and American Music Awards.) But that shifted in 2017, as stars stepped up their fashion game and gave us moments to obsess over all year long, from small movie premiers, photo calls, and other gatherings we normally might have written off as just another event.

This year, we saw fresh-off-the-runway collections everywhere we looked, from an Oscar de la Renta gown covered in fresh roses (at the Met Gala), a Vivienne Westwood dress featuring a hand-painted unicorn (at Cannes), a Tom Ford-era Gucci suit that didn’t need shirt underneath it (at LACMA’s Art+Film event)—and that’s just the beginning. Here, in no particular order, we present the 30 best red carpet moments of 2017. Relive all the lewks, below.

2017's Groundbreaking Moments in Mental Health

2017 was not an easy year for many of us. For women with mental health issues, in many ways it was especially difficult, as triggering news seemingly broke every day. But there were also some silver linings, as women made taking care of themselves a priority in 2017, too (need we remind you all 101 reasons why it’s damn good to be a woman in 2017?). And when it comes to our mental health, we made some serious strides in de-stigmatizing mental illness and caring for ourselves this year. More people than ever, especially in the spotlight, have come forward to talk openly about their mental health issues, creating an opening for others to do the same. Here are 11 of the most powerful changes:

PHOTO: Getty Images

1. Celebrities encouraged others to take time off to care for their health

Millie Bobby Brown, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, and Kesha, among other celebrities have recently taken time off to care for their mental health—and they didn’t cite something vague like “exhaustion” as the reason for their break. They were honest. “It’s not selfish to take time for yourself,” Kesha wrote in an op-ed for TIME. In Selena Gomez’s March Vogue cover story, where she revealed she’d been in an in-patient treatment center for 90 days, she said: “I wish more people would talk about therapy. We girls, we’re taught to be almost too resilient, to be strong and sexy and cool and laid-back, the girl who’s down. We also need to feel allowed to fall apart.”

2. The Royal Family made mental health awareness central to their agenda

It’s not unusual for the Royal Family to choose a philanthropic cause to focus on (Princess Diana is still legendary for her work with AIDS patients) but it is noteworthy that the cause Kate Middleton, Prince William, and Prince Harry have chosen is helping to remove the stigma surrounding mental health. They have worked hard with their foundation, Heads Together, to create an open dialogue about the topic. Most recently, they premiered a series of short films, called #OKtoSay, that highlight how critical conversations surrounding mental health can be.

3. Instagram and Facebook made a push to make mental health resources available to their users

Social media is where we share every detail of our lives– and for some users, that includes content that friends and family might see as a sign that someone’s mental health is in a precarious state. (Not to mention social media itself can be the source of anxiety for many people.) So it was a huge step this year when Instagram and Facebook launched tools in an attempt to keep users safe. It’s easier than ever to flag posts and delete hateful comments, but perhaps most importantly, Instagram recently allowed users to monitor Instagram Lives for any potentially concerning messaging or behavior. Once a live video is flagged, the user streaming the video will see a message pop up offering them mental health resources and help.

4. Chrissy Teigen showed us that even women with “perfect lives” get postpartum depression

In Glamour’s April cover story, Chrissy Teigen revealed that she experienced postpartum depression after giving birth to Luna. In her interview, she told Glamour, “I had everything I needed to be happy. And yet, for much of the last year, I felt unhappy. What basically everyone around me—but me—knew up until December was this: I have postpartum depression.”

5. Troian Bellisario released a deeply powerful film about her battle with anorexia

Pretty Little Liars alum Troain Bellisario wrote and starred in the film FEED, a gritty, honest look at life with anorexia. The point of her film was for people to understand how serious and dangerous the illness is. “It means fighting for your life,” she told Glamour after the film’s release. “You can have a disordered relationship with food, but to have an eating disorder is indicative of a mental illness, which I think needs treatment and recognition in a different way.”

Lena Dunham

6. Lena Dunham gave advice to young people coping with obsessive-compulsive disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is surrounded by a lot of misinformation (like that it’s about an intense desire for cleanliness—it’s not!), and one of the common misconceptions is that it can’t affect children. But it can, and in a video for the Child Mind Institute, Dunham, who was diagnosed with OCD in childhood, offered advice she wish she wish she had heard when she was younger. “I would tell my younger self that there’s no shame in asking a teacher for help,” she said in the video. “Telling a friend that you’re uncomfortable, and that it’s just the same as falling down and scraping your knee.”

7. Katy Perry de-stigmatized therapy by live-streaming one of her sessions

Earlier this year, Perry live-streamed a very real therapy session with her very real therapist. She captured herself talking to her therapist about battling suicidal thoughts, and even revealed that she wrote a song about it. “I feel ashamed that I would have those thoughts, feel that low and that depressed,” Perry said mid-session. “You can be right or you can be loved. I just want to be loved.” Talking about therapy is so important, so props to Perry for revealing to her fans that she sees a therapist—and what they talk about.

8. Michelle Williams proved you can’t ever really know how someone is feeling—even if they’re massively successful

Destiny’s Child was at one point one of the biggest groups in the world, but that didn’t mean all the members were happy. During an appearance on CBS’s The Talk earlier this year, Williams revealed that during her time in the band, she suffered from depression so severe she considered suicide. “I just internalized everything. I didn’t have an outlet,” she said. “You know, you go to church, and you just sweep it under the rug, and then you pray about it.” We now know it doesn’t have to be that way.

9. Corinne Olympios taught viewers about anxiety attacks during her time on The Bachelor

Season 21 of The Bachelor often made light of the fact that contestant Corinne once slept through one of the rose ceremonies, but after the episodes aired, she explained she was actually suffering from a mental health issue. “I was actually very upset, and I actually had an anxiety attack,” Corinne said during The Women Tell All. “I was hyperventilating, and I was very, very upset, and I was not in any way ready to go down and stand in a rose ceremony. Like, I was not able to do so.” She continues, “They can think what they want to think. I know what was happening in my own self that night.” If sleep is what you need, sleep, girl.

10. Prince William revealed that his mother Diana struggled with bulimia

In a 2017 documentary called Wasting Away: The Truth About Anorexia, Prince William sat down with Mark Austin, former British news anchor, and Austin’s daughter Maddie, who is recovering from anorexia. William explained that his late mother had bulimia—a revelation most didn’t know— and reiterated the importance of treating eating disorders seriously. “These are illnesses,” he said. “Mental health needs to be taken as seriously as physical health.”

PHOTO: Gary Gershoff

11. Lili Reinhart summed up exactly how we should view depression

In an interview with Glamour, the Riverdale star said that depression runs in her family. “That’s something that can be hard to come to terms with,” she said. “There wasn’t a particular reason why I was feeling [depressed], but you don’t need a reason—it’s depression. It’s a chemical in your brain that can be helped with medication, so that’s what I did. You don’t need validation to feel like it’s OK to be sad. As long as you try to figure it out and solve it to make things better, that’s all that matters.” Preach, Lili.
