13 Best Hand Lotions for Dry, Cracked Hands

Asking a beauty professional—whether it’s a celebrity hairstylist, makeup artist, or Instagram influencer—for advice is always a safe bet. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find there are plenty of other women out there who are legitimate authorities in their own right. In our column Unlikely Experts, they’ll give real reviews and recommendations. Whether it’s surfers on the best conditioners, bikers on the best cleansers or ballerinas on the best foot creams, it’s fair to say these women know best.

If you ask a room full of surgeons—regardless of their specialty or status—what their most important tool is, there’s a good chance each and every one will tell you it’s their hands. And how could they not be? Their hands are behind every incision, stitch, and decision they make, so it only makes sense that surgeons would know all there is to know about keeping them in good shape.

“Surgeons are battlefield experts in hand care because, whether we want to be or not, frequent hand washing, dryness, chapped joints, and need for full function are real parts of our lives,” says New York City surgeon Lara Devgan, M.D. “I wash my hands hundreds of times a week—sometimes more than 50 times a day—so I’m always thinking about how to best take care of them.”

Considering the average person isn’t performing dozens of surgeries a day, we figured any hand cream a surgeon swears by is good enough for the rest of us. From drugstore favorites to luxury treatments, check out their recommendations on the best hand lotions and creams ahead.

Adam Brody on Dating Fails, Romance, and Why He and Leighton Meester Are 'Big Hand Holders'

What’s the most surprising place you’ve hooked up with someone?

My apartment. But it was a loft, and my dad was sleeping around the corner. If you want to consider it gross, that’s fine. It also ultimately proved worthwhile—but some people would definitely find that gross.

Fill in the blank: “I love when my partner…”__

We’re big hand holders. Physical affection is very nice to me, it doesn’t necessarily have to be sexual.

You have a full day to binge-watch whatever the hell you want: What do you pick?

I loved the first season of Fleabag, but haven’t watched the new season. So I’d have to say Fleabag season two.

What’s the sexiest thing about yourself?

My feet. They’re nice, and I’ve never had any complaints about them from myself. It’s just like, “Hey, those are cool. Those are nice looking feet.”

What’s the weirdest thing you do in your alone time?

It’s not even in my alone time. I’ll reenact a conversation I’ve had or I would have, and I’ll be sort of mouthing the words. It’s so embarrassing, but my wife always asks me about it and forces me to answer. I think the first time—it’s just such a convoluted and backwards way to explain how I was doing this—but I was talking to a horse, like breaking a wild horse. My wife was like, “Who are you talking to right now?”

You stop by a convenience store on your way to a house party. What are you buying?

Fuck a convenience store, I guess I’ll buy gum for myself. But you know what’s really appreciated and great? Bring a nice snack. Oh boy, people appreciate that. Bring a nice fucking watermelon salad. Or cheese and crackers. As I get older I’m fixated on bringing good food. It doesn’t have to be expensive necessarily, but have something good to eat if you want to be a good guest.

What’s your favorite movie or TV sex scene?

I don’t even feel comfortable saying it, because it’s so much stuff from my youth—and everyone’s so young in it now. If you could pin it to one particular scene, the most obvious one is Boogie Nights. It was a very sexy and very fantastic movie. It’s a masterpiece that retains its potency.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

I think Carrie Fisher. It’s very primal and probably problematic, but Carrie Fisher in a bikini as Jabba the Hutt’s slave. I think that awakened something in a lot of pre-pubescent boys. But it makes you think—she’s in a bikini, but she’s also in chains. [Laughs.]

You’re alone in bed: What are you thinking about?

Right now, every seven minutes I’m shocked anew at the fact that this moron is probably the most powerful man in the world. It continues to seem unreal. You like to think that there’s some order to the universe. Or if all else fails there’s the Illuminati, or there’s somebody pulling the levers. And then it’s like no, no.

What’s the most inappropriate thing a fan has said to you?

Nothing springs to mind in terms of wildly inappropriate. But my wife got [a letter] from this dude called the “Snowman” who’s in prison. He traced his hand in it, and it seemed kind of cool. That’s pretty genuine.

What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done?

It wasn’t so much the way in which I did it, but my wife and I got married quickly. We got engaged and married quickly, and that in itself felt very romantic.

Best Hand Chains 2019: The Coolest Unexpected Jewelry Trend

My favorite piece of jewelry is something I don’t know how to describe. My boyfriend got it for me two years ago, and I haven’t taken it off since. It’s made of a gold chain that ties around my wrist three times, forms a cage with pearls attached across my knuckles, and then loops around my fingers. If that’s sound complicated, that’s because it is. This thing is basically a ring and a bracelet and a harness for your hand all in one. The other day some woman approached me and asked if the pearls across my knuckles were sewn into my skin. After I explained to her this was actually a piece of jewelry, she asked, “Well, what is it called?” And I didn’t know what to say.

A Google search led me to discover my favorite piece of jewelry is technically called a hand chain, although it sometimes goes by finger bracelet or hand harness. Brooklyn-based boutique and jewelry studio Catbird has a very charming name for its iteration: Kitten Mitten. Apparently a lot of them can also be worn as necklaces or foot chains (allegedly, they are also a thing).

All hand chains are part bracelet, part ring, and in my opinion they’re better than either/or. For one, they basically turn my whole hand into a piece of jewelry, and as someone who likes to wear multiple rings on every finger, this is key. So if you love wearing tons of jewelry, hand chains add a lot of bling with only one piece. But even if you don’t like the look of tons of jewelry, you can just wear a hand chain and that’s it. Some designers like Catbird have a more minimalistic approach, whereas others like Goldish, where my hand chain is actually from, add charms or pearls. Regardless of which hand chain you choose, it’s bound to make a statement. I cannot stress enough how many compliments I get on mine daily.

I also never take my hand chain off. I do everything in it. I sleep in it, I shower in it, I go boxing in it. It’s gotten to the point that it might as well be sewn into my hand because it’s second nature, one of the few things about my everyday look that stays consistent.

Although there aren’t too many jewelry designers making them yet, here are the 10 best hand chains I could find online now. If you can’t decide between a bracelet or a ring, these all would make the perfect alternative, and they’ll definitely have people asking, “What is that?” A question you can now answer.

The Best Hand Mask for Dry Cuticles

We all have our vices. Some are sexier than others (think spending an exorbitant amount of money on shoes, chasing partners who may not be right for you, and indulging in one too many drinks on a school night), and my biggest vice happens to be a very unsexy cuticle-picking habit. I’ve been biting my nails for as long as I can remember, and somewhere around high school I decided my nails weren’t enough, I had to wreak havoc on my cuticles too.

On a good day, my cuticles are ragged and hard. On a bad one they can’t stop bleeding due to splitting and picking. While I’m sure there’s something psychological driving this habit (you can definitely tell the state of my mental health based on the look of my nails—my cuticles were so swollen and bloody my first month of college it’s distracting in pictures), the true root of the problem is that my hands are so damn dry. Chalk it up to the weather, dehydration, and the fact that I live with four other people yet I’m the only who does the dishes. This in turn causes my nails to be brittle and easily broken and my cuticles to split and bleed, which I pull and gnaw on to my gross delight.

I’ve tried hundreds of cuticle creams, mindfulness, and terrible tasting nail polishes, but the only thing that’s remotely curbed my picking is getting regular manicures, especially acrylics. I need the help of a pro to get my cuticles in shape, and when my nails look pretty, I’m way more motivated to leave them intact. The problem? Getting regular manis are expensive, and I frankly don’t have the time to hit the nail salon every two weeks.

Luckily, I recently discovered the Patchology Perfect Ten Self-Warming Hand and Cuticle Mask, which has given me the closest thing I can get to manicured cuticles at home. The Perfect Ten is a set of foil mittens that contain a liquid mask, a similar concept to Babyfoot. The mask is a coconut oil base with macadamia oil, shea butter and rosehip oil to moisturize and soothe dry skin. The mittens are made using the same technology as space blankets, and the foil locks in your body heat to allow the oils to really penetrate into your skin.

It sounds a little messy, but the mask is pretty easy to use. You slip into the mitten and use the attached stickers to seal them, and then let the heat do it’s thing for 10 minutes. Queue up something to watch beforehand as your hands will be out of commission while in the gloves. Then, just remove the mask and leave the extra oils on to sink in.

After one use I found that the mask softened my dry cuticles significantly, which leads to less desire to pick. It also soothes anywhere I had been picking, making my hands look a lot more presentable. Plus, it made the rest of my hands baby soft, which is always a plus. I like to use the mask as the final step of an at home mani, right before I go to bed, to really let everything sink in. That way I don’t have to rinse off the oils from the mask, I just let my hands soak it up overnight.

And while the softness is the most noticeable the very next day, I would say the mask keeps my nails in check for about a week. I won’t be giving up the nail salon completely, but this certainly lets me extend the time between visits. For a picking addict like me, that’s no small feat.

Watch Donald Trump Try to Hold Melania's Hand Yet Again (Yep, It's Awkward)

“Donald and Melania Trump Awkwardly Holding Hands” is officially back on the air after a brief hiatus. And it’s no less cringe-inducing than the last time you saw it.

You may remember the first installment, back in January 2017, on the eve of his inauguration. The President-Elect attempted to grab his wife’s hand as they descended the stairs of Air Force One only to have her gently dismiss the gesture. Then there was the time last, in May, when she fully swatted his hand away while on a tarmac in Israel—and the world (and social media) went nuts. In February, FLOTUS eluded his grasp yet again with an impressive swerve, causing him to cover up the snub with a behind-the-back grab maneuver.

And here we are again today, on the South Lawn of the White House. The President and the First Lady were welcoming French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, for the administration’s first state visit when cameras captured footage of Trump making a move. It…didn’t go well, though she did eventually lightly grab his hand. Frankly, these are getting tough for any of us to watch.

See for yourselves below. It’s incredibly awkward.

The Internet is having a field day, as one would expect with one user writing, “Poor Melania, she looked like she was holding back tears under her hat as she held Trump’s hand.” Another said, “It’s almost like he thanks her at the end when she caves to letting him hold her hand. But I know he’d never do something like that.”

Of course, we have no idea what really goes on in the personal relationship between President Trump and the First Lady, but each incident of awkward hand-holding stands in stark contrast to their predecessors, the Obamas, who were often quite affectionate with each other in public.

16 Moisturizing Hand Creams for Soft, Smooth Hands

Winter, rude as ever, hits hard—both in terms of our skin and our general well-being (no one enjoys a 4 P.M. sunset). Outside of hopping on the next flight to anywhere warm, we’re left with hand cream as the next best solution for chapped skin. Still, the risks lurk at every turn: hand cream can so easily go too wet, too thick, too thin, too slimy, too perfumey, too useless. Determined to find your best possible bets—and put an end to dry cuticles and scratchy skin—we polled Glamour‘s editors on their top hand cream picks, both old and new. They’re not quite a trip to Turks and Caicos, but then again, nothing is. Close your eyes, breathe your hand cream in deep, and we’ll get through this.
