Gucci Mascara: Mascara L'Obscur Reviews With Photos


Gucci Beauty isn’t afraid to cause a stir. When the brand relaunched under creative director Alessandro Michele last spring, it put out bold ’80s style ads that not only showcased its beautiful new lipsticks, but model Dani Miller’s imperfect teeth. The comments section was a mix of comments both trolling and praising the images, and almost a year later the brand launched its first-ever mascara, which once again had the internet divided.

One of the images in the new campaign for Gucci’s Mascara L’Obscur features a close up on Miller’s eyelashes, which are covered in a clumpy coat of mascara to the point of looking like spider legs. I’m personally extremely into it, but the comments are divisive. While there are tons of heart, prayer hand, and fire emojis, there are also comments accusing the brand of joking, telling it to “rethink the concept,” and spider emojis galore.

Personally, I find Gucci to be one of the most interesting makeup brands in the current market. I love the subversive advertising paired with the traditionally feminine packaging, and it feels like the brand is actually doing something fresh and cool in an oversaturated space. I’m also obsessed with mascara, so I was excited to put L’Obscur to the test and see what all the fuss is about.

It’s impossible to talk about Mascara L’Obscure without mentioning the packaging. The pink and gold is so beautiful and feminine, it’s extremely heavy so it truly feels expensive, and I love the way the etched cap matches some of the lipstick cases. The brush is much smaller than I expected, with tiny rubber bristles and a pointed tip that’s designed to grab the smallest lashes at the top and bottom corners of your eyes, which also lengthens and separates, so you can get a minimal look or really load it on.

Gucci’s global makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver likes to use the brush to create two distinct looks, which he demonstrated on the brand’s Instagram. For the Classic Look—traditional length and separation—he recommends holding the brush horizontally and sweeping it through your lashes.

L'Oréal Paris Bambi Eye Mascara Review With Photos


I’ve always been enchanted by huge, cartoonish eyes. After graduating from Disney princesses, I fixed my obsession on anime characters, whose colorful outfits and huge eyelashes equally spoke to me. Early on in high school, I idolized Zooey Deschanel and her wide-eyed look, and drew Twiggy lashes on my lower lash line when I went out at night.

I’ve since moved on to more sophisticated methods of enhancing my lashes in hopes of making my tiny eyes look like a cartoon. Lash extensions and lifts have been the most successful, but they’re expensive and time consuming, so finding a good mascara has been crucial. While I have some go-tos, I’d yet to find one that replicates the doll-eyed look of a lash lift.

Then the new L’Oréal Paris Bambi Eye Mascara came along, and I knew I had something to be excited about. For starters, L’Oréal makes some of my all-time favorite mascaras (at any price point), and anything that promises crazy volume and “a doe-eyed effect” has my attention. But, let’s be real here, obviously the real draw was the name. Bambi is the ultimate big-eye icon in my book. The fact that model Camille Rowe is heavily featured in the ads alongside Bambi himself just adds to my theory that this mascara was made specifically with me in mind.

Adorable branding aside, where this mascara truly stands out is the brush, which has a mix of long and short bristles to grab every lash. It’s on the spiky-plasticy side, which is great for shorter lashes like mine, yet has some heft to it to help with volume.

The first time I tested it out, I was ridiculously sick—I more closely resembled the Corpse Bride than my usual self. But after one swipe of the stuff (singing the Bambi eyes line from “This Is What Makes Us Girls” to myself, naturally), I was wowed. I looked wide awake, and all the life instantly came back to my face. It fanned out my lashes so they were super fluttery, and the brush made it seem like I have double the lashes I actually do. My lashes were instantly lifted and crazy curled (no lash curler needed!), giving me the doll-y eyes of my dreams in seconds. Essentially, it gave me the same effect as my beloved lash lift, without the trip to the salon. In short, I’m obsessed.

If you’re looking for a natural look, this might not be the best choice for you, although it doesn’t clump no matter how many layers I apply. It just definitely looks like you have mascara on, a look I personally love. But despite the crazy volume I didn’t sacrifice any definition, and the inky black formula stays on all day without any flaking or smudging.

It didn’t turn me into a cartoon character, but it came pretty damn close.

The Best Mascara on Amazon – Vivienne Sabo Cabaret Premier Mascara Review


Some people have an encyclopedic knowledge of, oh, American history, sports statistics, or Friends trivia. I, on the other hand, have a vast database of the best mascaras hardwired into my brain. Depending on who you ask, this is a much less useful skill than rattling off WWI facts, but seeing as it’s literally my job, I could be doing a lot worse. From around the age of 12, I made learning everything there is to know about beauty my life’s mission, and quickly I became my friends and family’s go-to for all cosmetics questions.

I’ve helped compile numerous lists over the years: the best mascaras at Sephora, the best mascaras for sensitive eyes, the best drugstore mascaras—and the even more specific, best Maybelline mascaras. (Don’t worry, I made one for CoverGirl too.) This has led me down many various rabbit holes of Sephora message boards, Reddit threads, and Amazon comments. And somehow—just when I’m about to declare a definitive best of the best—a sleeper hit comes along and shocks me.

Such was the case when I was recently scrolling through a list of the highest rated, best mascaras on Amazon, and came across a mascara brand I had never heard of. Tucked among the usual suspects (mostly L’Oréal and Maybelline classics), was the Vivienne Sabó Cabaret Première mascara, with 1,511 reviews, the majority of them five stars.

Scrolling through the comments, it was clear I was missing out on a hidden gem. Hundreds of women shared reviews, claiming it doubled their lashes, never clumped, and had replaced the mascara they’d been using for 20 years. I hit order faster than a shopper on Prime Day.

I would be remiss if I didn’t start with the name of the product. “Cabaret Première” is so delightfully campy, but the tube itself is actually pretty sleek. The brand promises to “transform your ordinary [lashes] into ooh-la-la,” and claims to be smudge-proof. “Just one coat defines and volumizes your natural lashes for a deep black, fanned look with no clumps, that doesn’t flake or transfer.”

The brush itself is quite small, and it’s the spiky plastic that implies it will be better at lengthening than volumizing. The formula is light and whipped, and doesn’t dry down to look crunchy. Upon first swipe I was impressed. My lashes looked longer and fuller. The Amazon reviews all referenced the “fanned out” quality it gave their lashes, and I definitely agree there. It pulled my lashes into a nice eye-opening curl, and no matter how many coats I applied, it didn’t clump up. I also wore it for a full day with no smudging or flaking, despite how inky black the formula is.

Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara Review


I have a very distinct memory of glueing my eye shut in an attempt to apply false eyelashes. I was probably 12 or 13, and it was Halloween. While I can’t remember exactly what I was dressing up as, I do remember the burn from the lash glue and the seconds of terror that I would never be able to pry my eye open again and would be blinded forever.

Since then, I’ve sworn off fake eyelashes, and only have them applied by makeup artists for special occasions. But I’ve always loved the drama huge fluffy lashes bring. While I’ve tried everything from lash extensions to eyelash lifts, I’ve made mascara my bread and butter in bringing some life to my tiny lashes. I love all mascaras at every price point, but I’m particularly interested in those that promise a false lash effect.

Recently, I was captivated by a somewhat viral Facebook video of a woman applying coats of mascara to her blonde lashes, only to have them instantly double in size. Every time she blinks into the brush, her lashes get longer and darker, without getting clumpy. I have never clicked on a product link so fast. When I saw it was called Liquid Lash Extensions, I was already sold, but then my eyes flickered over to the numbers: 7,569 reviews with 6,005 (and counting) of them being five stars. Talk about marketing at its finest.

Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions is a fiber mascara, so it uses liquid fibers to build up your lashes. The formula contains orchid stem cell complex to encourage lash growth, and Japanese pepper extract to condition. It has a tapered spiky brush with tons of little bristles to grab each lash. Although I found the formula rather wet, it didn’t glop or clump up, and has a nice glossy shine.

My results were not as dramatic as the video (sigh), but I was still totally impressed. It really separates my lashes, making it appear that I’m blessed with more than I actually have. I wouldn’t say it doubled my lashes in length, but it definitely got close. It’s super inky black, and doesn’t flake or smudge all day, but when you want to take it off it comes off in seconds with warm water. My only gripe is it doesn’t give as much volume as I prefer, but hey, I’ll take what I can get.

It’s funny, the late ’90s and the early 2000s kind of blend together for me because I was like 9 and 10, you know?

Yes! Okay, let’s move on: Your hair is gorgeous. What do you do to keep it in such great shape?

Olaplex, Olaplex, Olaplex. Especially while I’m coloring it. Also, hair masks are kind of a new thing for me. I never, ever used hair masks until about a year or two ago. But I’ve been coloring my hair since I was 16, so the addition of masks to my routine has changed everything. Now that I’m blond, I’ve been using the Christophe Robin purple hair mask. It’s really great. It helps keep the brassier tones and the yellow out of my blond.

I was going to ask if switching from brunette to blond has changed your routine…

That’s been new for me, the Christophe Robin. It’s used the same way as Olaplex, so I’ll try to do Olaplex maybe twice a week and do the purple mask once a week. I leave it in for 30 minutes, and it really cools out the blond. I prefer my blond a little bit cooler because I’m so fair.

What about in terms of styling your hair? Are you a wash-and-go person?

I’m useless when it comes to styling my hair. I just brush, put something that keeps flyaways down, and I’m out the door. If I’m going out somewhere sometimes I’ll throw…actually, I’m obsessed with the T3 curling wand. I’ll just throw a couple curls in my already air-dried hair with the curling wand.

How much time do you spend getting ready?

Fifteen to 20 minutes. I like to pick my clothes out the night before. My skin care routine is really simple. I try to use just a few products. Basically, I use Cetaphil’s cleanser and Vintner’s Daughter Botanical Oil. I’ll put on some sunscreen and maybe a little bit of concealer, and I’m out the door.

L'Oréal Paris' Voluminous X Fiber Is the Best Fiber Mascara I've Ever Used


My obsession with eyelashes runs deep. When I was little, I was captivated by Bratz dolls’ huge drawn-on lashes and heavy bedroom eyes, despite not being allowed to play with them. (We were a Barbie household.) Twiggy was my beauty icon before I even started wearing makeup. When the time came, mascara was the first beauty product I was allowed to wear out of the house. To this day, I’ll apply a few coats on my lashes even when I know I won’t be leaving my apartment. It just makes me fee like myself.

In my 10-plus years as a mascara wearer, I’ve probably burned through 1,000 tubes of the stuff. I’ve racked up a solid list of favorites. However, I only earned my title as a true Lash Obsessive when I got extensions this fall. Mascara is a transformative product for sure (especially when you have lashes as sparse as mine), but it doesn’t hold a candle to the power of extensions.

I was hooked from the get-go. My lash extensions made me feel glamorous in an old Hollywood way. I could be wearing jeans and a T-shirt, but I felt camera-ready. I understood why suddenly everyone on Instagram was trading in the mascara.. But of course, there’s a catch: Lash extensions are expensive and high maintenance. Plus, they irritated my sensitive eyes. After about three months, I kissed my extensions goodbye and returned to my stash of drugstore mascaras.

I’ve been a longtime fan of L’Oréal mascaras. (Telescopic is my OG fave.) Having tasted the extension side of life, I decided to give a new formula a go. So, I reached for the brand’s new Voluminous X Fiber Mascara—a Glamour Beauty Award Winner. And it was love at first swipe.

As the name suggests, the Voluminous X Fiber is a fiber mascara that uses a two-step system to build lashes up to almost-extension status.

The first step is a black primer. It essentially acts as a base coat for what’s to come, and is really lengthening and volumizing—I find it’s enough on it’s own for days where I want a more natural look (or don’t have time for another layer.) The second is a fiber mascara, which uses fibers to coat the lashes and really builds up the volume and drama on your lashes.

The Voluminous X Fiber formula is pitch-black, but actually feels as light as air. I love a heavy lash look, but that normally means I have to sacrifice volume. Because of the fibers, though, this product gets you that drama without having to overdo it on the product, which means your lashes stay fluffy. I wouldn’t call it a natural look (which is fine by me), but it does look more realistic than most.

Another thing I love about this mascara are the brushes. On the fiber side, it’s an elongated hourglass shape that grabs every.single.lash. Seriously, when I swipe it on, it makes it seem like my lashes doubled. The fiber side has a curved brush, which curls my lashes and adds that touch of glam that I live for.

I might not be able to get lash extensions anymore, but L’Oreal’s Voluminous X Fiber mascara has gotten me closer to that look than I’d ever found at the drugstore. And that’s fine by me.
