Gigi Hadid Just Announced a Makeup Collaboration With Maybelline


With three seasons of collaborating with Tommy Hilfiger on her illustrious CV already, model-designer-It Girl-Lady Gaga pal Gigi Hadid is on to the next project in her apparent quest to take over the world: a collaboration with drugstore cosmetics fave Maybelline. Hadid announced the news in a cryptic Instagram post on Sunday afternoon, and, although there aren’t too many details at this point, you can definitely color us intrigued.

It’s not a huge surprise this is coming: Hadid definitely has the knowledge for it. She’s never been one to shy away from playing around with all sorts of glam, sexy, and plain old fun makeup looks (case in point, her gray lipstick moment in July). She’s also been a fan of Maybelline products for a while now; her insanely sparky manicure for the American Music Awards last year involving 200 Swarovski crystals was created with a base layer of Maybelline New York Color Show Nail Lacquer in Bare Beige, and she’s been known to wear a Kylie Lip Kit dupe in the form of Maybelline’s $6 Color Sensational Lip Liner in Toast.

All this to say, if her history with the company and the photo she granted us are any indications, then the collab is already setting up to be in good shape. Especially because it’s already been in the works for a whole year (sneaky, Gigi).

Is the ’70s vibe a hint of what we’ll be seeing in her collab with the brand? How do we schedule “coming soon” on our iCals?? We need answers! (To that point, we’ve reached out to Maybelline for more details and will update as soon as we have further info.)

Halloween 2017: How to Create Watercolor Pop Art Makeup


If you just so happen to not be dressing up as Harley Quinn, a glam unicorn, or a Snapchat filter for Halloween this year, then you’re in luck, because we’ve got the perfect costume for you. Inspired by makeup artist Mykie‘s stunning take on pop art, this watercolor makeup will have you looking like you belong in a comic book strip. Think: bright colors, bold graphics, and black outlines.

So with that in mind, we teamed up with Make Up For Ever Director of Education and Artistry Lijha Stewart (also known as the “Queen of Halloween”) to help you reach all your pop art dreams. Read on for the full step-by-step tutorial.

Level of difficulty: On a scale of 1 to 5, we’d rate this a 2 1/2. If you can paint crooked lines, you’ll be able to do this no problem.

Amount of time required: 45 minutes

What you’ll need:
-Your foundation of choice
-Bronzer
-Loose setting powder
-Colored face paint (turquoise, fuchsia, green, blue, and purple)
-Matching colored glitter (optional)
-Black gel eyeliner
-False eyelashes (optional)

Let’s get started!

In order to really make this look pop, a clean canvas is a must. Even out your skin tone with a medium-coverage foundation, then set it with a loose, matte powder. Add bronzer for warmth.

Our favorite perfecting foundations: Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation, $43; Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation, $40.

Before placing any color on your face, decide on which colors you’ll be using. We used five colors (turquoise, fuchsia, acid green, blue, and purple) from the Make Up For Ever Flash Color Palette, $99.

To apply color drips, take a long, angled eye brush (score the one we used here) and start with the lightest color first. With a light hand, draw random, crooked lines down your face starting from your eyelids down to your cheeks. Alternate and layer colors on top of one another as desired (hint: there’s really no method to this—the more random, the better). Next, add color to the sides of your nose and lips.

Face paint options that won’t break the bank: Party City Cream Makeup, $1.99 each; NYX Primal Colors, $5 each.

This step is completely optional, but if you’re as obsessed with glitter as we are (especially on Halloween), then go all out by patting matching-colored glitter on top of the drips with a wet, flat eyeshadow brush.

Glitters we love: BH Cosmetics Glitter Eyeliner, $5.50 each; Urban Decay Heavy Metal Loose Glitter, $6 each.

Time to outline! Using an inky black gel liner, outline your eyebrows, the sides of your nose, your nostrils, eyes, and lips. A gel liner works best here because the creamy texture won’t drag against any existing color or glitter already on your face.

The best gel liners: Tarte Clay Pot Waterproof Liner, $21; L’Oréal Paris Infallible Lacquer Liner 24H Eyeliner, $7.79

Another optional (but worth it) step: False lashes definitely add to the comic book-inspired effect. Choose a pair that have long, tapered hairs, like Make Up For Ever Lash Show Faux Lashes in #C-703, $18.

    This look—by makeup artist Emily Dear Heart (@emilydearheart)—begins with fishnet stockings (we know, so appropriate), instead of a wig cap, to create a scale-y finish on skin. “Put one whole leg over your face,” Emily explains. “It’s easier than holding the fishnets. If they move while you’re applying a color it can muddy the scales.” Another pro tip: Use a tightly-wound dome-shaped brush to deposit your pigment.     Mermaid Makeup Tutorial Halloween 2017: The Prettiest Mermaid Costume to Try


    Halloween: It’s coming. And unless you’ve been living under a rock (or, ahem, the sea), you’ve probably noticed mermaid makeup splashed all over your Instagram and Pinterest feeds. (It’s one of the highest searched Halloween costumes for 2017!) But here’s where it gets tricky: Half the stuff out there looks like you need Kim Kardashian’s entire glam squad to pull it off. While it’s definitely a makeup look that requires some skill in the contouring and smoky eye department, it is 100 percent possible to do in your bathroom at home.

    We tapped Make Up For Ever Director of Education and Artistry Lijha Stewart (who’s also known as the “Queen of Halloween”) to demonstrate exactly how to create mermaid makeup, step-by-step. Let’s get started.

    Level of difficulty: We won’t sugarcoat it: on a scale of 1 to 5, this is a 4. It’s intricate, messy (we spilled an entire jar of glitter during the process, oops), and takes some patience. We recommend practicing the mermaid scales a day or two before you do the whole thing.

    Amount of time required: Plan to set aside around two hours if you’re aiming to get every tiny detail just so. (And that’s only the makeup. Dinglehoppering not included.)

    What you’ll need:
    –Highlighter
    -Colorful eyeshadows (we used purple, pink, and teal)
    -Glitter
    -White liquid eyeliner
    -Translucent powder
    –False eyelashes
    -Fishnet stockings
    –A makeup sponge

    And away we go…

    In order to get the best outcome possible (read: to make sure your makeup doesn’t look cakey), complexion prep is a must. The key is to start with a lightweight foundation, like Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation, that’ll provide a smooth base for layering. Apply it with a damp makeup sponge so it’s soft and airy, then set your base with a fluffy brush and light dusting of translucent powder, making sure to powder under your eyes to eliminate creasing. Next (and this step is very important) add as much highlighter as possible. “Put it all over,” says Stewart. With another fluffy brush (we used the Make Up For Ever 122 Blending Brush) focus it on areas she called “points of intensity,” in other words: your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, your cupid’s bow, shoulders, and clavicle. After that, style your brows as you prefer to wear them; they won’t be touched past this point.

    No mermaid is complete without her mermaid eyes. We used two different purple tones here, but feel free to use whatever colors you want (pinks or blues would be dreamy here, too!). To make sure it lasts all night, apply a cream eyeshadow (like Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream) with your fingers first and layer a matching powder shade on top, focusing the darker color in the outer corners. For that super smoky effect, use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend the colors outward toward your temples. If you blend too much, you can always go back in with the darker color. (See here and here for two more basic—but still gorgeous—smoky eye techniques if you need them.)

    The key to making winged liner look more mermaid and less cat? Opt for a vibrant white liquid liner on top. “It won’t work unless it’s liquid,” says Stewart, noting that a pigmented, non-streaky option is crucial. Next, apply a regular white pencil eyeliner on your bottom waterline to open up your eyes. Warning: If you’re not used to wearing anything there, it might feel odd for a few minutes, but that’ll pass! Fake lashes are obviously optional, but if you want to get fancy, here’s our handy guide for doing it yourself. We used Make Up For Ever Lash Show Creative Impact False Lashes, $18. Otherwise, finish things off with a generous helping of your favorite volumizing mascara.

    If there’s any time to give the ombré lip trend a go, it’s Halloween. All you need are two colors—we used blue and white—but pink would also be cute here. Start by applying the darker shade in the outer corners of your lips and blending it inward. Then, take the lighter shade and dab it in the center. Blend it out with your fingers and top it off with some highlighter in the middle.

    Now for the fun part! For life-like mermaid-looking skin, dust a light layer of teal eyeshadow with a small powder brush in the places you would normally contour; so, the hollows of your cheeks, along your hairline, and underneath your jawline. And don’t be afraid to get creative with it. Add some color underneath your eyes, your nose, or your neck and shoulders.

    This step is optional, but really makes the mermaid feel come to life. Take a clean fluffy brush and dust it on top or adjacent to the teal shadow you put on before. Don’t have pink eyeshadow handy? Blush works just fine.

    And finally, the part we warned you about: the scales. This step requires some patience and (likely) a friend. Take fishnet stockings and stretch them out to your desired scale size. Have a friend hold them in place while you pat on your desired color (here we used white eyeshadow) with a damp makeup sponge or a dense brush. To really make it pop, choose a cream formula. Let it dry for about five minutes, but after, lock it in with a translucent powder.

Annie wakes up in Ted’s bed, darts to the bathroom to put on a full face of natural-looking makeup, and he wakes up none the wiser. And in that moment, the movie distilled the pure essence of “no-makeup makeup.” The goal: you still look like you, but with a filter (or “makeup”) to subtly brighten, enhance, and spotlight your best features.

    But to say that’s easier said than done is an understatement. It’s also easier to read about flying to the moon than it is to get there yourself, and one does not equip you for the other. With that in mind, we got your flight plan: the best, most crucial pointers from the makeup artists backstage at New York Fashion Week. Here we break down exactly how to pull off a look that says, “oh, this? I woke up like this.”

    Tip 1: Press on Lipstick With Your Fingers

    If you want to step things up a notch from Chapstick, but still pull off a lip color as realistically your own, Nars Global Artistry Director Uzo says the power is in your hands. Literally—instead of applying lipstick from the tube, rub a finger on the bullet of a shade just slightly darker than your natural lip color and press it onto your lips, like she did at Mansur Gavriel, above. Blot with a tissue, and the resulting stained effect—she used Nars’ Audacious formula—will look super natural.

    Tip 2: Use Highlighter As Eyeliner

    By this point, you’ve probably heard the go-to makeup artist trick of adding white or flesh-colored liner on your waterline, which subtly covers up redness and weaves the illusion that your eye is just that much bigger. That one’s a failsafe, but the eyeliner trick that Maybelline makeup artist Erin Parsons thought for Jonathan Simkhai’s show is the new-and-improved, better-than-ever version. The twist? You actually use a brow highlighter, like Maybelline’s Brow Precise Perfecting Highlighter, to line your upper lash line. The nude hue looks supremely natural—which makes sense, given its intended use.

    Tip 3: For More Natural-Looking Lashes, Master the “Wiggle”

    Mascara is usually the hardest part of no-makeup makeup to pull off, just because most mascara immediately looks visible (just doing its job). But at Alexander Wang, makeup artist Diane Kendal revealed the secret: wiggle the mascara brush into your roots only to get volume and definition, without overtly “done” lashes. She used Nars’ yet-to-be-released Climax Mascara (coming this spring, no pun intended), but its Audacious Mascara also works.

    Tip 4: Skip Powder Blush and Go for a Cream

    For a fresh spin on no-makeup blush, makeup artist Daniel Martin says to lightly blend peachy blush along the tops of your cheekbones. At Rebecca Minkoff, he chose Honest Beauty’s Crème Blush in Truly Teasing—he says the cream consistency sinks in for a windswept, glowing look. To add some dewiness, tap a salve like Honest’s Magic Balm over your cheekbones, down your nose, and onto your cupid’s bow.
