Mindy Kaling, Hoda Kotb, and Savannah Guthrie's Best Advice

If anyone’s qualified to talk about making your dreams come true, it’s three women who have refused to take no for an answer. Mindy Kaling, Hoda Kotb, and Savannah Guthrie all just happened to do so on TV—Kaling in her revolutionary series The Mindy Project, and Kotb and Guthrie co-hosting Today on NBC. But even as Kaling’s built a reputation for asking “why not me?” and encouraging women to go for everything they want, it’s easier said than done. That’s where determination comes in—something the three can all speak to, especially when it comes to the long hours and hard work involved.

At Glamour‘s 2018 Women of the Year Summit on Sunday, November 11, the three gathered for panel called Closing the Dream Gap: Showing Girls (and Ourselves) What’s Next. Their biggest advice for women looking to build their confidence and make their dreams come true is to put in the hard work. From that, they say, comes the confidence and the courage to think you can achieve anything.

“I always just did the leg work, and it meant I never came to anything unprepared,” Kaling said. “The only reason I was able to be confident was because I literally couldn’t not be confident with the amount of research and preparation I did.”

Guthrie echoed a similar sentiment. “The work is the confidence,” she said. “Confidence isn’t some slogan. Confidence is earned.”

Kaling noted that self-love is also a really big part of success. The actress and comedian says that when she Googles herself, she notices how people say she’s really “into” herself. “It’s not that I’m into myself,” Kaling said. “It’s that I don’t hate myself. In my career, a lot of people have a problem with being around women who don’t hate themselves. Never hate yourself.”

Kotb, Guthrie, and Kaling also discussed a conundrum many women face: the balance between being assertive and coming across as “likable.” Kaling told a self-deprecating anecdote about how never being perceived as conventionally attractive by men actually made asking for things easier. “When you are ignored in that way, things like confidence and asking for things in your professional career become a little easier,” she said.

Guthrie added, “Growing up, I was not an attractive child. Boys didn’t like me. Physical appeal was never what I had, so it helped me to come up with a personality and lean on other things. What gives you success in the longterm comes from the inside.”

Kotb shared a story about how her friend Maria Shriver’s 22-year-old son was the one who complained about the less-than-appetizing food at a luncheon filled with extremely powerful women. She said that many of the women there, despite being so successful, were afraid to voice their dissatisfaction for some reason.

The trio hopes this thinking changes for other women, but on their own terms. “I want [my daughter] to be confident and humble,” Guthrie said. “I want her to be gentle and bold.” Kotb added, “You can change and evolve by watching other women.”

At the end of the day, all three of these women say dreams come true when you figure out how to swallow your fear—even temporarily. Fake it until you make it. “I was fearful and insecure, and I just did it anyway,” Guthrie said. “It took me a long time to feel solid and secure. Maybe just yesterday.”

Kaling spent years being frustrated with the lack of diversity in Hollywood. That’s what motivated her to go after her acting and writing dreams. “I’ve always just had a chip on my shoulder,” Kaling said. “When you’re raised without seeing representation and you’re forced to relate to Jennifer Aniston on Friends, you’re just starved for it for so long.”

Representation is what helped Guthrie realize she could be lead anchor of a news show. “I felt like I connected with [Katie Couric], ” she said. “She made sense to me. And I was like, ‘Maybe I could do that.'”

Overcoming adversity and fear—specifically breast cancer and a divorce—is what helped Kotb see things more clearly. “You start to think to yourself, ‘Well, now what am I afraid of? What am I afraid of?” she said. “I remember I woke up one morning and I got four words: You can’t scare me. All of a sudden I became empowered.”

A similar phenomenon happened to Kaling, too. After she broke a gender and race boundary in Hollywood and found herself working on The Office, she asked herself what else was possible. That’s what she, Guthrie, and Kotb want to happen for all women.

“Why not you?” Guthrie said. “Whatever your dream is, you don’t have to shout it to the world—but in your own mind think big.”

Here's How Karlie Kloss, Mindy Kaling, and Other Celebrities Celebrated Labor Day Weekend

Even though the three-day Labor Day weekend marks the ever-so-sad end of summer, at the very least we get a few days to enjoy sunshine, warm weather, last trips to the beach—and perhaps even get out of town for a little vacation. Also — thank you @Netflix for allowing us the ability to binge on rom-coms and popcorn in full day light. #LaborDayWeekend.”

Mindy Kaling Has Reportedly Given Birth To a Baby Girl

Congratulations are in order for Mindy Kaling—well, maybe. She reportedly gave birth to her first child, a baby girl, on December 15. And according to E! News, the actress named her daughter Katherine.

News first broke of Kaling’s pregnancy back in July. Since then, she’s kept details of her pregnancy as low-key as possible. Though she told Willie Geist during an appearance on Sunday Today, “I’d like to be the fun mom. I know I’m gonna be the dorky mom. So it could be kind of fun, too. I think that would be nice.”

She also noted that she felt some trepidation about becoming a first-time parent, simply because she didn’t know what to expect. “It’s so unknown to me,” Kaling said. “I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, okay, it’s out of my hands, which is kind of a fun feeling.”

Kaling added that she had all the motherly inspiration she needed at home with her own mother, Swati. “My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” Kailing told Geist. “My career choice was not something that she was familiar with, and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I’d be so happy.”

While Kaling will certainly have a fun holiday season with her new daughter, she won’t have the luxury of taking too much time off. Her latest film, A Wrinkle in Time, will be released in theaters in March—meaning Kaling will likely be back on the interview circuit soon. But then again, maybe her little one can just tag along and make each appearance all the more adorable.

We Got Mindy Kaling to Give Us Her Take on the New iPhone X

The lore surrounding the upcoming iPhone X (out Friday, November 3) has officially reached a fever pitch—from mounting anxiety surrounding a demand that may reportedly outnumber supply to a much-debated new facial recognition feature (a James Bond–ian widget that lets your mug do the unlocking). But while most of us will have to wait until Friday (or longer) to get our hands on the tenth-anniversary iPhone, Mindy Kaling got to road-test one all weekend long. So we got her to give us her take on the glass-backed, wireless, face-enhancing, face-reading, face-contouring mega-phone.

“I usually don’t care about getting new versions of anything,” Kaling admitted. “When I get an update for my computer, I always click ‘remind me later’ until months go by and my computer starts smoking.”

Nevertheless, she tells Glamour the new iPhone is “so legit.” Here are five ways The Mindy Project star thinks the new phone will “upgrade you.”

1. Face ID

Of all the new features in the iPhone X, this one has gotten the most buzz. There’s no Touch ID (nor is there a home button, for that matter); instead, your face unlocks the phone. According to an Apple release, the “TrueDepth camera projects and analyzes more than 30,000 invisible dots to create a precise depth map of your face.” So you can use your face to do everything from unlocking your phone to using Apple Pay.

“Like a villain in a thrilling dystopian science fiction movie, my face is now my password,” reports Kaling. “Face ID works indoors, outdoors and in the dark, so when you have a 3:00 A.M. panic attack, you can be on your phone spiraling even sooner.”

The new iPhone X

2. Wireless Charging

Both the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X have glass backs, allowing—at last!—for wireless charging. “I can now charge my iPhone wirelessly by placing it on a little puck by my bed,” says Kaling. “This just looks cool.”

3. Portrait Lighting

Apple has seriously bumped up the camera on the iPhone X (as well as the iPhone 8, for that matter), including redesigned rear lenses with improved image stabilization—meaning crisper photos, even in low lighting. On the X, a new feature called Portrait Lighting builds on the previous “Portrait Mode” by offering the ability to adjust any portrait-style photos you may take with shadows, lighting effects, and more. In a nutshell, you’re going to waste a lot of time on this phone taking and editing selfies.

Kaling was officially impressed. “We all love Portrait mode, but this is insane,” she says. “I literally never have to wear makeup or shower ever again, my photos will always make me look like Priyanka Chopra.”

4. Water- and Dust-Resistant

This might seem like a no-brainer, but haven’t we all experienced some water “incident” that resulted feverish, poor decision making to attempt a rescue, like dropping an iPhone into a bag of rice? “I treat my phone basically like a coaster for diet sodas,” Kaling says, “so this is a must.”

5. Animojis

Aside from the Face ID, Animojis is probably the most-discussed new iPhone X feature. In addition to the TrueDepth camera allowing your face to unlock your phone, it also has the ability to animate your expressions in a series of emoji—from the panda to the unicorn to, yes, the poop emoji—dubbed “Animoji.” You can then send these as iMessages to your friends. If you think sending an Animoji of yourself to someone sounds dorky, Kaling disagrees: “Mark my words: Animojis are the future. Imagine how this could take the edge off of tough conversations! ‘Warren, I no longer love you, I’m leaving you’ sounds so much more palatable coming from an animated panda head!” OK, point made.

Mindy Kaling Already Knows She's Having a Baby Girl

PHOTO: Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic/Getty Images

Mindy Kaling‘s baby shower won’t have a place for guests to bet on whether she’s having a boy or a girl, nor will she have to cut into a pink or blue cake to find out the sex of her baby. As the actress revealed in a new interview with Ellen DeGeneres this week, she had no interest in creating any kind of suspense or surprise for herself during her first pregnancy.

When DeGeneres asked if she knew if she would be having a son or daughter, or if she was keeping it a secret from herself, Kaling replied, “I am not waiting, I wanted to know way early. I’m having a girl.” Who else is counting down the days until the world meets this tiny, definitely adorable mini Mindy Kaling?

Kaling and DeGeneres also discussed how it was actually Kaling’s A Wrinkle in Time costar Oprah Winfrey who first spilled the beans somewhat prematurely about the pregnancy. “She did announce it,” Kaling said, laughing. “I had told Oprah and Reese [Witherspoon] on a movie we’re working on, A Wrinkle in Time, and she announced it at press—she was very excited.”

But there are no hard feelings between the pair. “If anyone is going to announce big news about your private life, Oprah Winfrey is the person,” Kaling said. “You can’t complain that much about it. And you also can’t be like, ‘Hey, Oprah, zip it’—because she’s almost like a religious figure. So if there’s one person I have to tell my daughter about that revealed her existence to the world, Oprah is pretty good.” She added, “I think I learned a long time ago that it’s probably not a good idea to reprimand Oprah!”

Rumors began swirling in July that the 38-year-old was expecting her first child, and although she kept her lips zipped on the topic, Oprah ended up confirming the news later that month to People. “My mouth dropped,” Winfrey said of Kaling telling her the news while they were standing in a press line. “She said, ‘Oh, Oprah, I don’t think you know. I’m five months pregnant.’ And I said, ‘What?!'”

Kaling finally confirmed the news herself in an interview with the Sunday Today show that aired in September. “[Motherhood is] so unknown to me,” she told host Willie Geist. “I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, ‘OK, it’s out of my hands,’ which is kind of a fun feeling. “

Mindy Kaling Says 'The Mindy Project' Series Finale Will Be 'Romantic' and 'Unexpected'

Notorious workaholic Mindy Kaling is in the midst of a life-changing experience, and no, it has nothing to do with impending motherhood. “I’m so much more relaxed,” she tells us about filming the final season of The Mindy Project. “The first season of any show is crazy. By season six, I’m not worried about those things anymore. It’s the nicest feeling.”

While we wouldn’t blame her for feeling added pressure about the finale, she’s taking the end of her ground-breaking comedy in stride. “I have my eye on about a million dresses, Louboutin shoes, and Chanel bags I hope to snag from Sal Perez [the show’s costume designer]. I would be crazy not to,” she jokes. But still, “I have to face the end of the show in a real way, and each day gets a little bit harder and sadder to be around here.”

PHOTO: Jordin Althaus/Hulu

“Here” is not only Dr. Lahiri’s office—where we conducted this on-set interview—but the Universal Television soundstage that will have produced all 117 episodes of the FOX/Hulu series by the time it’s done. “I’ve seen a lot of shows that start out great and then people think they start to fall off, but I loved that our show has just gotten better and better,” Kaling says.

She praises Hulu for giving her the creative freedom to make the show she always wanted, but Kaling had a strong vision for her character, Dr. Lahiri, since the beginning. “I’m glad we didn’t compromise on making her more traditionally palatable or boring or more familiar as a female trope that we’ve seen before,” Kaling explains. “When you are creating a show like this and you realize you’re a lot of different firsts—first Indian woman on TV in a lead role, first Indian creator—you get pulled in a lot of directions as to what you want to do. But we never compromised what this character was going to do and say because of external pressures.”

It’s true. Viewers may have envied Lahiri’s wardrobe, dates, and lavish decor, but she was no Mary Richards. “You see a lot of leads that are often plucky, goody two shoes, sweet, boring characters, and they are the leads because they have no flaws,” Kaling says. “And then they surround themselves with funny characters, typically men. What’s great about this character is that she got to do both at once—she got to be the engine of comedy, while also being the point-of-view character.”

PHOTO: Hulu

That character—a marriage-obsessed, stubborn, superficial OBGYN—has certainly changed since she rode her bike into a pool in the series premiere. At the start of the show’s final season (spoiler alert if you’re not caught up) Lahiri realizes that being married to Bryan Greenberg’s nurse Ben isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and the two decide to divorce. But is marriage the problem or is Ben just not the right guy for her? “I personally think she was just not with the right man,” Kaling says. “But I think she thinks she’s had this unhealthy obsession with marriage in that she’s ruined it for herself. I understand why she feels that way, but I don’t agree with that.”

It’s not often Kaling discusses her personal life during interviews, but the topic of marriage is one she’s thought a lot about—for her character and herself. “I hope America also doesn’t agree with her because as someone who is unmarried, I still have that old-fashioned feeling,” she says. “I root for it as an institution, even though I see it work so infrequently.” She laughs at her words, but quickly adds: “I still like it, though! I’ve had friends that have done both marriage and divorce, and I admire them so much. But because it seems like something that more and more people, particularly on the coasts, are losing faith in, I think it’s nice to have a character cling to those sort of old-fashioned things and have it actually be true.”

And with five new episodes left in the series, Kaling is well aware that many fans still hope Mindy hasn’t given up on marriage entirely—especially if it involves Danny now that Chris Messina has returned. Danny’s absence last season was certainly felt, in large part because of his dynamic chemistry with Lahiri. “I didn’t know Chris before we started the show,” Kaling says. “I just met him once, and I had seen him in other things, but you have no idea if that’s going to translate into actual chemistry. I look at that movie, The Mexican, with Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt, who are two age-appropriate, good-looking movie stars, and in that movie anyway, the chemistry just didn’t translate on-camera. You just can’t control it.”

mindy kaling chris messina 1

Kaling may not have expected fireworks between Drs. Lahiri and Castellano (or that they would have a child) in the very beginning, but she is happy the stars and planets aligned as they did. “Thirty percent of [the chemistry] is the work you put in as writers to make sure these are two kinds of characters that will be so different from each other, but will have some overlaps,” she explains. “Like, they both enter a room thinking they have the solution to whatever problem is ahead. Another thirty percent is making sure you put them in interesting, sexy storylines. For instance, when when one of them needs something, the other one is the solution to it.” Sometimes they’re each other’s problems as well, she notes, but the secret is “really timing that out.” And what about the last forty percent of the equation? “It’s what the actors bring,” she says. “Chris is such a great actor. He loves women, he’s a great husband, and he loves female voices and to play this kind of part. And also, it’s just weird things in the ether you can’t quantify.”

As for the final episode—and, more specifically, whether or not Danny and Mindy will end up together—Kaling is careful not to reveal too much. She does confirm that Messina is in it, but whether Dr. Castellano can redeem his season five behavior and come to his senses is still TBD. One thing’s for certain: There will be romance, in some capacity. “I love TV series finales,” Kaling says. “It’s always the episode that everyone tunes in for, even if you’ve lost track of the show for a bit. I remember loving the Friends finale because I had stopped watching in college, but the dynamic of the cast was so amazing it was like I had never stopped watching. I don’t know that I drew any direct inspiration from any single show for our finale, but I know [executive producer] Matt [Warburton] and I wanted people to watch it and feel closure but in an unexpected way. We also wanted it to be incredibly cinematic and romantic. And funny, of course! Funny first, always.”
