The Best French Clothing and Fashion Brands You Haven't Heard of Yet (Guide)

Scan the streets of almost any neighborhood in Paris, and you’ll see a wide range of international high-street chains (the Topshop’s and the Mango’s), mid-range French boutiques (the Maje’s and the Kooples’) and luxury fashion houses (the Dior’s and the Louis Vuitton’s). All are widely exported, to every major metropolis, from New York to Tokyo. And for so long, when travelers flocked to France with an expectation of coming back with their suitcase filled-to-the-brim, those classics are what the collective imagination called to mind.

The reality of shopping in Paris in 2018, however, is far more diverse and exciting: There are smaller, emerging, and even under-the-radar labels doing brisk business in the capital, with a growing market of overseas sales. Sézane dipped into American retail, first through collaborations with Madewell and then by expanding its e-commerce to the U.S. and eventually opening up one of it’s L’Appartements in New York; sneaker brand Veja, meanwhile, has become the indie favorite in the footwear space. And the list of authentically French brands that should be on your radar goes on. Ahead, you’ll find 10 of your favorites, to pick up next time you’re in Paris or get delivered to your door.

We bring you the trends. You make them your own. Sign up for Glamour’s daily newsletter to find the best fashion for YOU.

We Tried That Wearable Vibrator You've Heard About—and It's Worth the Hype

If you read about sex toys at all, there’s a good chance you’ve at least seen the Vesper by Crave. It’s been around for a few years, and as a popular wearable vibrator, it’s long been admired for the fact that it’s pretty enough to hide its double-life as a sex toy. But why is it so recommended? Turns out, the answer has more to do with the “vibrator” aspect than the “wearable” one.

Sure, all orgasms are awesome, but let’s be real: Not all orgasms are glamorous. Getting off with a hookup in a bar bathroom might be fun, but it isn’t glamorous. The Vesper is (Fergie voice) G-L-A-M-O-R-O-U-S. Like, orgasming on an island while wearing eyelash extensions and fur-level glamorous. Available in silver, gold, and rose gold, the Vesper dangles around your neck as a beautiful, long necklace. Snuggled on its stem is a small, round button that turns the vibrator on. It’s surprisingly subtle, which means that, yes, you really can have it around your neck in public and the only people who will understand its true purpose are those in the know.

Is it appropriate for every occasion? That’s your call, since wearing a vibrating necklace to a family function would probably be a bold move. Still, orgasms provide stress relief, so you could sneak into the bathroom and quickly vibrate one out at your next anxiety-provoking social obligation, as opposed to drinking a bit too much champagne. (Or do both, no judgment.)

If wearing a vibrator out in public—even if only you know it’s a vibrator—makes you uncomfortable, simply wear it at home to feel fab, or keep it on during sex. But remember, if you are going to wear it as jewelry in public, now more than ever you should remember to clean your sex toys. It’s the considerate thing to do (in addition to being the safe thing).

PHOTO: Crave

See? Subtle.

Personally, one of my favorite ways to wear and use the Vesper is during partnered sex. Making love wearing nothing but a necklace is ultra-glam. Wearing a necklace that also gets you off? Even better. It vibrates at four speeds and two modes (pulsing and constant). It’s very small and thin, so it works best for focused clitoral contact or teasing someone. So many people with vaginas require clitoral stimulation to get off during penetrative sex (although, vaginas are not required, and I know people with penises who adore this sex toy), so adding a vibrator to partnered sex is never a bad idea. But sometimes you’re in the moment and might not want to get up and pull out your favorite toy from your underwear drawer, and positioning can often be the most difficult aspect of adding a toy to the mix when you’re in the Bone Zone. But the Vesper is too delicate to ever be awkward. If your vibrator is already around your neck, you’re good to go. And it’s just so pretty. Did I mention that the company will evenpersonally engrave it for you?

The first time I used the Vesper (I have the gold one) was during partnered sex, and I came like a goddess. I tried it again later while masturbating to porn. It was still beautiful and it still made me orgasm, but I almost felt bad that my teeny, chic gold necklace had to bear witness to pop-up ads. To me, the Vesper totally gives off a “light candles and fantasize about the one you love,” so I think I prefer bigger and clunkier vibrators for masturbation and the Vesper for romantic sex with bae. Fortunately, it’s small and subtle enough that you could slip it off your neck and press it against your clit during passionate sex with another person, or use it to celebrate being single after you just bought yourself roses. Gotta love versatility.

Vesper by Crave is available starting at $69 here.

Lady Gaga Has a Weird Christmas Sex Song You've Probably Never Heard

Lady Gaga has pulled a lot of, erm, spirited stunts in her career. She once wore an outfit made entirely out of Kermit the Frog heads. In 2010, she decided literal meat was proper attire for the MTV Video Music Awards. And she’s spent the greater part of the past two years wearing a pink cowboy hat un-ironically. She marches to the beat of her own drum—and if that means getting puked on by a “vomit artist” while performing at South by Southwest, then that’s what it means, damn it.

But none of Gaga’s stunts are stranger than her actual music—in the best way possible, of course. All of her biggest hits—”Bad Romance,” “Applause,” “Just Dance,” etc.—are sonically weird, but they somehow work. They became mainstream because of Gaga’s clever lyrics and the producers’ monster beats. Reinventing pop music is Gaga’s thing, TBH, and she hits the mark almost every time.

Notice how I said the word “almost,” because there have been a few times where Gaga’s music just didn’t work—for a multitude of reasons. And one of those times was “Christmas Tree,” a bizarre electronic song she released in December 2008 where she essentially makes Christmas trees a metaphor for sex. Why Gaga thought, “Light me up, put me on top, let’s fa la la la la la la la la” was a solid lyrical choice will remain one of pop music’s greatest mysteries.

There are more cringe-worthy gems where that came from, too Here is just a sample of the lyrics found in “Christmas Tree”:

  • “The only place you wanna be is underneath my Christmas tree”

  • “Ho ho ho under the mistletoe/Yes, everybody knows/We will take off
    our clothes”

  • “My Christmas tree is delicious” (What the hell… does this mean?)

Have the holidays been ruined for you yet? No? Well, they will when you actually hear the song. (To be fair, it’s pretty catchy. This is a
Lady Gaga song, after all. She knows how to craft a good bop, even ones about…banging underneath a Christmas tree.)

Listen to it, below, and be transformed. Seriously, you’ll never be the same.

Still confused? Below, read the full lyrics:

Ra-pa-pum-pum
Ra-pa-pum-pum
Ra-pa-pum-pum
Ra-pa-pum-pum

Light me up, put me on top
Let’s fa la la la la, la la la la
Light me up, put me on top
Let’s fa la la la la, la la la la

The only place you’ll want to be
Is underneath my Christmas tree
The only place you want to be
Is underneath my Christmas tree

Light me up, put me on top
Let’s fa la la la la, la la la la
Light me up, put me on top
Let’s fa la la la la, la la la la

Ho ho ho (ra-pa-pum-pum)
Under the mistletoe (ra-pa-pum-pum)
Yes, everybody knows (ra-pa-pum-pum)
We will take off our clothes (ra-pa-pum-pum)
Yes, if you want us to, we will
You…

Oh-oh, a Christmas
My Christmas tree’s delicious
Oh-oh, a Christmas
My Christmas tree’s delicious

Light you up, put you on top
Let’s fa la la la la, la la la la (let’s go!)
Light you up, put you on top
Let’s fa la la la la, la la la la (let’s go!)

Ho ho ho (ra-pa-pum-pum)
Under the mistletoe (ra-pa-pum-pum)
Yes, everybody knows (ra-pa-pum-pum)
We will take off our clothes (ra-pa-pum-pum)
Yes, if you want us to we will
You…

Oh-oh, a Christmas
My Christmas tree’s delicious
Oh-oh, a Christmas
My Christmas tree’s delicious

Here, here, here (ra-pa-pum-pum)
The best time of the year (ra-pa-pum-pum)
Take off my stockings where?
I’m spreading Christmas cheer
Yes, if you want us to we will

Oh-oh, a Christmas
My Christmas tree’s delicious
Oh-oh, a Christmas
My Christmas tree’s delicious

Space Cowboy
Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga
And she goes
Space Cowboy
Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga
Here we go
Cherry Cherry Boom Boom

Santa Claus is shook. Mrs. Claus is calling the cops. Rudolph’s nose is on fire. Everything that was once sweet and tender about Christmas has been destroyed. Destroyed! There goes your childhood! There goes humanity!

Kidding. This track is actually super fun, but bizarre nonetheless. And it’s sex positive—in, like, a kitschy sort of way. If this is how 2008 Gaga wanted to spend her Christmas—or how you want to spend yours now—then we totally support it. Live your best, most authentic life this December 25 with whatever “Christmas tree” you want.

Nikki Haley Says Trump's Accusers Should Be Heard

It was roughly six weeks ago that the White House dismissed the numerous women who have accused President Donald Trump of sexual harassment and assault as “fake news” and stated plainly that they were not to be believed. For the many women who’ve found a voice with the #MeToo movement, this was incredibly frustrating to hear. But U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley broke from the administration’s messaging during her appearance on CBS’ Face the Nation Sunday morning to say that the President’s accusers should be heard.

“You know, I am incredibly proud of the women who have come forward,” she said. “I’m proud of their strength; I’m proud of their courage; and I think that the idea that this is happening, I think it will start to bring a conscience to this situation—not just in politics but in, you know, we’ve seen in Hollywood and in every industry, and I think the time has come.”

Face the Nation host John Dickerson then asked her how people should “assess the accusers of the President”—and her answer might be surprising to those used to hearing her defend Trump.

“The same thing: It’s women who accuse anyone should be heard,” she said. “They should be heard, and they should be dealt with.”

“I think we heard from them prior to the election, and I think any woman who has felt violated or who has felt mistreated in any way, they have every right to speak up,” she added.

“And does the election mean that’s a settled issue?” Dickerson asked.

“You know, that’s for the people to decide,” she replied. “I know that he was elected, but women should always feel comfortable coming forward, and we should all be willing to listen to them.”

10 Indie Beauty Products You’ve Never Heard of but Have to Try

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59c577415b4d856bacc33e3f/master/pass/cosmoprof-cle-powder.jpg” alt=”Cle Cosmetics Melting Lip Powder, $19.99″/>

With so many brands coming out with their best-ever liquid lipsticks, it feels like not much else has been happening in lip-world. But if there was ever a place to hear about lipstick innovation, it was this convention—and I’m happy to say, this futuristic lip powder fit the bill. You spread the dust on, and watch as it transforms into a slightly moist, then matte tint. The best part? It has the wear-time of a liquid lipstick, without the “dry your lips into a flaky mess” side effects.

So many mascaras claim they work like a push-up bra for your lashes, and so few actually follow through. But pull this mascara wand from its tube, and the first thing you notice is the rounded brush. The second: the fact that after you sweep it through your lashes, they stay lifted—in the immediate aftermath, and until the very end of the day.

A straightener with infrared heat plates sounds super high tech, and thankfully, it’s not just a gimmick. According to the brand, the infrared light and ceramic plates tag team to leave your hair healthier. The duo create negative ions to bring your hair’s natural oils to the surface, which then attracts water from the air. This is all a scientific way of saying you’re going to see less frizz and a sleeker finish, without any product needed. I’ve gotta concur: every time I use it, my hair turns out smooth, shiny, and without any of its normal poof.

Listen: this water is incredible. I love a dark, dramatic dose of mascara, and one swipe of this cucumber cleansing water takes it all off instantly. Even just wiping a cotton pad of it across my skin makes the cotton come away seriously gray, even after I wash my face. It’s fascinating, addictive, and just slightly disturbing.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59c57720f232e52ea3c47d29/master/pass/cosmoprof-goodal-moisture-barrier.jpg” alt=”Goodal Moisture Barrier Liquid, $26″/>

Barrier creams are the unsung heroes of the skin care world. Not familiar? The term refers to those moisturizing, mild creams that give your skin everything it needs, which can help treat acne just as much as drying spot remedies. The downside is that barrier creams are typically pretty heavy—great for people with dry skin, but less so for everyone else. K-beauty brand Goodal’s liquid does the job with a quick-to-sink-in serum texture, so now everyone can benefit.

It looks like a candle, it burns like a candle, and it smells like a very expensive candle. But against all the odds, this is actually a moisturizing body oil. UK-based brand Prismologie is working at the frontier of experiential skin care: featuring wild mango butter, coconut oil, and soybean oil, its Oud candle gives you this incredible, warm, fragrant dose of hydration. It’s hard to go back to normal moisturizer.

Liquid bronzers aren’t a gamechanger, with options aplenty at both drugstores and Sephora. But where most go on matte and dry to a realistically flat finish, Note’s Sunglow delivers the subtlest pearlescent sheen in a sheer, ultra-light fluid. You look like you could’ve been on a yacht. It’s that good.

To hear an aesthetician tell it, the benefits of dry brushing go on and on: improved circulation, smooth skin, and allegedly, it even gives your legs a slightly more firm look. The reality is a little more painful, since it involves giving yourself a rub down with a rough brush. This glove, on the other hand, is a delight. With a scratchy but bearable surface, it sloughs off dead skin and so I feel baby-butt soft for two weeks.

Sticking a spoon in the freezer for a DIY eye depuffer is something I always read about and never actually do, but after looking at the roll call of antioxidants in Votre Vu’s frozen push-pop serum, I’ve been making the freezer trip daily. After running it over my face every morning, I can attest: you see short-term depuffing benefits ASAP, and with long-term firming benefits, I rue the day my serum popsicle runs out.

The coconut water trend peaked two years ago, so its inclusion in MineTan’s self-tanner didn’t sell me. What did? The combo of a bronze, 0-percent orange color, and its unprecedented ability to last for literally a week and a half before showing any signs of wear. No maintenance required—it’s basically, a dream self-tanner come true.
