13 Best Retinol Creams & Serums 2020 – Reviews

Ask anyone with glowing skin, and they’ll likely tell you it’s thanks to the best retinol creams (and, OK, maybe genetics). The ingredient is often hailed as the gold standard for both reducing wrinkles and fighting acne. But while retinol is extremely effective, it’s also notoriously tricky to get right.

First things first, it helps to know what is retinol exactly? It’s often used as a catchall term for topical products containing a vitamin A derivative, but technically retinol is a type of retinoid, of which there are several variations that work at different levels in your skin care. “Retinoids work by increasing collagen production as well as increasing the rate of skin cell turnover,” says New York dermatologist Shari Marchbein, M.D. “They also help treat acne, blackheads, and clogged pores by reducing the stickiness of the cells that clog pores, as well as speeding up the rate at which the skin turns over and regenerates.” Because of this, retinol creams and serums are ideal for improving your skin’s overall texture, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, evening out skin tone, and decreasing pore size.

But all this turnover can also lead to irritation, including redness, peeling, and increased breakouts (known as “purging”). Most derms recommend easing yourself into retinol, starting with one or two applications a week to build up your tolerance. You can also try buffering—i.e., sandwiching retinol between two layers of moisturizer—to keep irritation at bay.

If used correctly and carefully, though, a good retinol product can truly revolutionize your skin care routine—something our editors can say with certainty. We polled Glamour staffers (and a few experts) and asked them to share the retinols that deliver results without the irritation. Read on for the best retinol creams, serums, and oils they swear by.

13 Best Shaving Creams for Women 2020

As far as beauty products go, the best shaving cream for women is admittedly not something we spend as much time deliberating over as, say, a new serum or face mask. But if you shave, know that there are definitely a select few options that win out over the others. The finalists that ultimately made it onto our list of must-haves are ones formulated with something extra. Whether that means tailoring the ingredients list toward sensitive skin types or emulsifying from gel to milk (and yes, there’s a specific benefit for that), these shaving creams do way more than just foam up and ward off razor burn.

To make them even easier to shop, we’ve separated them by category, so you know which options will work best for your skin type and concerns—like, for instance, your bikini area or underarms. Read on for a detailed breakdown of the best shaving cream for women.

The Best Eye Creams for Tired Eyes, According to Med Students

Asking a beauty professional—whether it’s a celebrity hairstylist, makeup artist, or Instagram influencer (hi, 2019)—for advice is always a safe bet. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find there are plenty of other women out there who are legitimate authorities in their own right. In our column Unlikely Experts, they’ll give real reviews and recommendations. Whether it’s surfers on the best conditioners, bikers on the best cleansers, or ballerinas on the best foot creams, it’s fair to say these women know best.

In addition to 10-plus years of education learning how to save lives, medical students also master how to stay up late. They go from clocking hours in the library to grueling residency hours to the always on-call life of a practicing doctor. It’s a career that’s guaranteed to make your parents proud…and your skin looking tired.

“Get some sleep” is sound advice for a reason: As dermatologists explain, a lack of sleep means your body overreacts to everyday things like hormonal changes, which can lead to puffy eyes, dark circles, and breakouts. Sleep deprivation amps up the levels of cortisol—the stress hormone—in your body, something that’s already spiking for students who are attempting to memorize textbooks and pass exams. Plus, all that fluorescent hospital lighting can really zombify anyone’s complexion.

Still, no one wants a doctor who looks like they’ve been up all night. In addition to experimenting with power naps and espresso drinks, med school is the time to find an effective eye cream. Anyone who manages to stay up all night and help patients all day must know a thing or two.

With that in mind, we spoke with medical students and residents across the country about the eye cream they rely on to trick their friends, professors, and patients into thinking they got a full night’s sleep. Keep scrolling for their depuffing, nourishing, line-smoothing undereye picks.

13 Curl Gels and Creams for Defined, No-Crunch Curls

There are few things quite like the betrayal of a beauty product, especially one that you love. A few examples: Foundation that looks phenomenal, only to leave your skin a mess. Lipstick that’s the prettiest color you’ve ever seen, but migrates around and leaves you with Joker-face. Or, like we’re here to talk about today, hair gel.

Finding a curl gel that gives you beautiful definition is a triumph—but tons of good, even great curl gels pack a level of alcohol that dries out your hair over time, leaving it dehydrated even as nothing in your routine changes, says Ouidad stylist Jessica O’Brien. The situation is frustrating, so nip it in the bud with a moisturizing curl gel that doesn’t play games. Check out 13 of our all-time favorites ahead.

16 Moisturizing Hand Creams for Soft, Smooth Hands

Winter, rude as ever, hits hard—both in terms of our skin and our general well-being (no one enjoys a 4 P.M. sunset). It’s especially rough for our hands, which take a beating between the dry air, harsh wind, and constant hand washing to avoid the office cold. Outside of hopping on the next flight to anywhere warm, we’re left with hand cream as the next best solution for chapped skin. Still, the risks lurk at every turn: hand cream can so easily go too wet, too thick, too thin, too slimy, too perfumey, too useless. Determined to find your best possible bets—and put an end to dry cuticles and scratchy skin—we polled Glamour‘s editors on their top hand cream picks, both old and new. They’re not quite a trip to Turks and Caicos, but then again, nothing is. Close your eyes, breathe your hand cream in deep, and we’ll get through this.

13 Best Eye Creams of 2017 for Wrinkles, Dark Circles, and Puffiness

“I think eye creams are bullshit.” We got this response literally no less than a dozen times from while conducting research for this story. It’s understandable. No matter how much beauty ads promise, there really is no such thing as a magic cream that’ll make you look like a woman who always drinks enough water and clocks eight hours of sleep each night. Even if you are that woman (secrets, please?), dark circles can still be hereditary. However, there really is some truth to the best eye creams. No, they won’t entirely get rid of that puffy, blue-ish tinge or erase wrinkles overnight, but there are a handful of options with ingredients that actually do tighten, brighten, and generally make your need for concealer a little less. We didn’t make everyone in the office a believer, but we did find 13 recommendations that make good on their claims. Most of them anyway.
