Jewelry: Women Will Buy It For Themselves, Thank You Very Much


“I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it” aren’t just lines from Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings.” For a growing number of women, they’re words to live by.

For far too long, jewelry has been considered a gift-only item. But the team at direct-to-consumer jewelry line Mejuri has found that their female customers are no longer waiting for a special occasion (or a man) to get the sparklers they’ve earmarked. Instead, they’re buying what they want, when they want it.

Noura Sakkijha, Mejuri’s cofounder and CEO, tells Glamour that consumers aren’t interested in waiting for a partner or loved one to think of gifting them that special something, not least because that outdated idea is still based on the notion that it’s a man who will purchase that item for a woman. “When we founded Mejuri, our goal was to change the narrative surrounding gifting and to place the purchasing power into the hands of women,” she explains. ”Now 75% of purchases [at Mejuri] are made by women, for themselves and for each other.”

To her point, just this week Mejuri launched its second engagement collection. “Before we developed the product, we saw that 62% of those who bought our first collection were women, so we reached out to them to learn more. Whether it was for their partner or to celebrate 30 as the new 21, women were buying the rings for all sorts of reasons—once again demonstrating that we don’t need to wait for anyone or any occasion to buy the damn diamond,” Sakkijha says.

Others in the industry have also taken note of this trend. In 2018, MVI Marketing, which provides consumer research on luxury goods and jewelry, found that 51% of millennial women with a household income of $75,000 or more purchase their own accessories, from rings to necklaces to bracelets. And an article from Quartzy traces the shift back to the 1980s, when more women began working outside the home and earning income of their own.

Still, the most noticeable increase has come in the past decade, with more women than ever wanting to recognize personal and professional milestones independent of their relationship status. Some, like one Glamour contributor, have even begun to invest in their own engagement rings.

These trends became inescapable, in the age of endless scrolling through Instagram and the near-constant stream of street-style inspiration. How to Clean Your Jewelry in the Summer


If accessorizing with jewelry at the beach is your thing, go for it—just know there’s a responsibility that comes along with wearing bracelets, earrings, and necklaces in and around the water.

“Chemical or mineral residue from chlorine or salt water will remain on the jewelry’s surface and continue to damage it,” Kelsey Perry, formerly of the jewelry brand Silpada, explained. “It can lead to tarnishing and corrosion of the finish but can also break down functioning components such as clasps, connection rings, and stone settings.”

If the waves don’t prove too tempting to jump into, remember to remove your jewelry before you dive in. Water alone will accelerate tarnishing—add in salt or chlorine, and the possibility of discoloration, bleaching, and messed-up finishes becomes a danger.

“If you’re wearing your gold chains daily and not taking them off between sunscreen, pool, shower, shampoo, lotion, your chains can accumulate guck,” said Jennifer Fisher, founder of Jennifer Fisher Jewelry. That means that cleaning your jewelry soon after a trip to the beach or pool is imperative. “I would recommend cleaning your chains with a soft cloth or a jewelry cleaner appropriate for the type of metal your jewelry is made of at least once a week in order to keep your jewelry maintained and shiny.”

“We recommend washing immediately after exposure and before extended storage,” Perry added, nothing that you can also use whatever mild soap you have on hand (be it hand soap or body wash). “Making sure the item is completely rinsed and dried is just as important as the actual cleaning too.”

Metal’s not the only material to keep off the beach, either. Woven leather pieces can start to peel, dry out, and turn funky colors after being introduced to water. “Don’t wear those pieces in water,” Ryane Delka, formerly of Silpada, said. “Keep leather dry at all times and clean with a soft, damp cloth or specially formulated leather cleaner.” Same goes for costume jewelry: “It should never be worn in the pool, the ocean, salt water or in chlorine,” Fisher said.

But even if you’re not getting into the water, that doesn’t mean you’re quite off the hook. You’re still going to want to either take off your jewelry if you’re going to sweat or wear sunscreen (which, by the way, you absolutely should) and give it some extra TLC when you get home. “You wash your workout clothes; you should wash your jewelry,” said Fisher.

Also, be sure to take your jewelry off before you apply that sunscreen: Putting sunscreen or even spraying perfume directly on it can cause damage, according to designer Monica Vinader. Delka added: “The chemicals in sunscreen and the salt content of sweat act very similar to pool and ocean water, accelerating the rate of tarnishing and corrosion. Sand can act as an abrasive to metal, leather, and stones, while sun exposure can fade components, soften adhesives, and discolor metal.”

Best Hand Chains 2019: The Coolest Unexpected Jewelry Trend


My favorite piece of jewelry is something I don’t know how to describe. My boyfriend got it for me two years ago, and I haven’t taken it off since. It’s made of a gold chain that ties around my wrist three times, forms a cage with pearls attached across my knuckles, and then loops around my fingers. If that’s sound complicated, that’s because it is. This thing is basically a ring and a bracelet and a harness for your hand all in one. The other day some woman approached me and asked if the pearls across my knuckles were sewn into my skin. After I explained to her this was actually a piece of jewelry, she asked, “Well, what is it called?” And I didn’t know what to say.

A Google search led me to discover my favorite piece of jewelry is technically called a hand chain, although it sometimes goes by finger bracelet or hand harness. Brooklyn-based boutique and jewelry studio Catbird has a very charming name for its iteration: Kitten Mitten. Apparently a lot of them can also be worn as necklaces or foot chains (allegedly, they are also a thing).

All hand chains are part bracelet, part ring, and in my opinion they’re better than either/or. For one, they basically turn my whole hand into a piece of jewelry, and as someone who likes to wear multiple rings on every finger, this is key. So if you love wearing tons of jewelry, hand chains add a lot of bling with only one piece. But even if you don’t like the look of tons of jewelry, you can just wear a hand chain and that’s it. Some designers like Catbird have a more minimalistic approach, whereas others like Goldish, where my hand chain is actually from, add charms or pearls. Regardless of which hand chain you choose, it’s bound to make a statement. I cannot stress enough how many compliments I get on mine daily.

I also never take my hand chain off. I do everything in it. I sleep in it, I shower in it, I go boxing in it. It’s gotten to the point that it might as well be sewn into my hand because it’s second nature, one of the few things about my everyday look that stays consistent.

Although there aren’t too many jewelry designers making them yet, here are the 10 best hand chains I could find online now. If you can’t decide between a bracelet or a ring, these all would make the perfect alternative, and they’ll definitely have people asking, “What is that?” A question you can now answer.
