Serena Williams Just Played Her First Tennis Match After Giving Birth 3 Months Ago

Most of us had a pretty bleh 2017, but Serena Williams, champion in every sense of the word, managed to have a pretty spectacular year. She got married and had a baby and is still considered the best tennis player on the planet. So does it matter that she lost her final match of 2017 and her first since giving birth? Not one bit.

“I don’t think I am going to rate my performance,” she told the AP, per Vanity Fair. “I have plenty of comebacks, from injuries, from surgeries, but I’ve never had a comeback after actually giving birth to a human being. So, in my eyes, I feel it was a wonderful, wonderful match for me.”

The match in question was an exhibition game at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, and the winner was French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Williams said of her return to the game overall, “I don’t know if I am totally ready to come back on the tour yet …I know that when I come back I definitely want to be competing for championships. I am definitely looking forward to getting back out there. I am taking it one day at a time. I am going to assess everything with my team before deciding.” Fair enough.

“I don’t think I have anything more left to prove,” said Williams, referencing her dozens of grand slam titles and trove of gold medals. But she’s not done with tennis yet, and the first step was just getting back on the court. “In the beginning, it felt a little tough. But as the match moved on, I was less afraid. I knew I was not going to fall over and break,” she said.

It’s not like she was gone for too long, actually. Williams’ break from the game started in January, when she was already several weeks pregnant with her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., so she’s beginning and ending 2017 as a tennis player. And she managed to squeeze in a wedding to the Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit.

She even achieved the most rare and elusive award of all: an Instagram shout-out from her close friend Beyoncé.

How to Make Giving Blow Jobs Way More Pleasant

Hi Emily,

I have recently started seeing a new man. And I have a terrible gag reflex. Like it’s honestly terrible. I gag every single time he goes too deep, and I don’t really love the taste of semen. Between the depth and worrying about the taste, I get so tense. All I want to do is finish the job without looking like an idiot. Is it all in my head, or is there a way to fix this issue?

Emma, 22, Indiana

Hi Emma,

Let me start off by saying that being able to deep-throat is not synonymous with a great blow job. First, let him know you want to control the depth. Despite what porn might have you think, the bulk of the nerve endings are actually in the tip of the penis. Using your hands to create friction on the shaft can stimulate the parts your mouth can’t reach.

However, I totally understand why you want to be able to go deep. The good news is you can definitely train your throat and fix that pesky gag reflex. Here a few ways to get you blowing like a pro:

Get Off First:
When attempting to give a killer blow job, it’s totally natural for you to tense up, especially if all you’re worried about is how it’s going to taste at the end. Try loosening up, and have an orgasm (or two) first. Once you’ve gotten off, you’ll be much more relaxed and will really want to return the favor, considering your partner has done his job well.

Train Your Throat:
You can actually train yourself to deep throat, but it’s going to take some time to get your gag reflex under control. Start off by using a clean finger and placing it towards the back of your throat until you’re at the point that usually makes you gag. Relax your throat and breathe through your nose, holding for 10 seconds, and then pulling back.

Do this a few times, then start to go deeper—you’ll notice your gag reflex becoming less sensitive. If you have a dildo or phallic vibrator, you can start to practice with that as well as you get more comfortable. It may take awhile, but eventually, your throat will be ready for more.

Add a Little Topping:
As far as the taste of semen goes, there isn’t much that can be done about that. There are certain fruits and foods your partner can eat that have been said to make semen sweeter, but not sweet enough to not taste like, well, semen.

While this may not completely mask the taste, using some of System JO’s Gelato line can definitely help. They have flavors like hazelnut espresso and tiramisu that actually taste amazing enough to put on ice cream. Add a little dab to his member during oral sex and when he gets close to climax, add a little more. And if you have to spit on the floor, hey, no one’s judging.

With a little bit of patience, practice, and relaxed throat muscles, your sensitive gag reflex will be a thing of the past.

XX,
Emily

Serena Williams Makes Her First Appearance Since Giving Birth at Glamour's Women of the Year Awards

Serena Williams has been nothing short of ecstatic when it comes to sharing every aspect of her life as a new mom. The only thing that can even come close to matching that excitement? Apparently, it’s Gigi Hadid.

In her first public appearance since giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. on September 1, Williams stepped out at Glamour‘s 2017 Women of the Year Awards to introduce honoree Hadid. “Gigi, you’re one of the few people on this planet I would leave my baby for one night,” the tennis champ told the packed crowd at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre on Monday night.

The feeling, naturally, is mutual. “Serena, I just want to say you have been such a beautiful light in my life for so many years, and I can’t tell you how happy I am to call you my friend.” Hadid said after she took the stage to accept her award. “I love you so much, so thank you.”

And while this is our first glimpse of the new mom in person, Williams has been relatively visible on social media over the first two months of Alexis’ life. The athlete, who posted frequent updates throughout her pregnancy, has been equally vocal now that her daughter has made her world debut about everything from buying diapers for the first time to her hopes and dreams for her baby girl, detailed in an emotional open letter.

Serena, might we request some social meeting documentation of little Alexis’s first time meeting her Auntie Gigi, too?

Selena Gomez Is Reportedly Giving Justin Bieber Another Chance Because He Was Her 'First Love'

However you feel about Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber reuniting out of the blue in the last few weeks, there’s no denying that they’re becoming closer and closer with every church service and hockey game they attend together. It’s been reported that Justin is actively looking to rekindle his romance with Selena, and while sources previously claimed that the “Wolves” singer is just looking to rebuild a platonic friendship with J.Biebs, a new report from People reveals that she might actually be willing to give him yet another chance on the boyfriend front.

As a source told the magazine, Selena “always saw the best” in Justin, even throughout his many legal troubles, tumultuous life in the spotlight, and their own on-again, off-again relationship. “Justin was Selena’s first love. He will always have a special place in her heart. She’s always held out hope that one day the circumstances and timing would be right,” the source added. “There have been times in the past where Selena was excited and thought things would work out again, but then was disappointed [by how things turned out].”

Another insider told People that Justin has also never been able to get over Selena and is currently on his best behavior in an effort to try to win her back. “They’re having a great time together. Neither are seeing anyone else, and they seem happy to leave it at this for now,” the source said. “Spending time together makes them both very happy. For Justin, no one ever came close to comparing to Selena. He always thought she was the most special, and now seems mature enough to realize Selena deserves the best.”

Selena, 25, and Justin, 23, who dated on and off between 2011 and 2014, were first spotted hanging out again last month. At the time, sources said Justin had reached out after hearing about Selena’s kidney transplant, and that the pair had reconnected while attending the same church. Not long after, however, Selena and The Weeknd broke up after 10 months of dating, and the rumor mill kicked into high gear, with countless “sources” and Jelena fans speculating that the two pop stars were actually more than friends. Of course, matching outfits and rented-out restaurants don’t necessarily equal a relationship, and neither celebs have confirmed any romance rumors—yet.

Finley is Giving Away Real Gold and Silver Jewelry, For Free—Here's Why

I follow a ridiculous number of jewelry brands on Instagram—I gave up counting at 31. My feed is filled with thick, brass hoop earrings resting sedately on marble trays, zodiac medallions layered with nameplate necklaces and diamond chokers, pinkies adorned with custom-engraved gold signet rings and silver stacks. But how many of these jewelry brands have I actually worn, you ask? Uh, that’d be a mere four out of 30-something. It’s a ratio that probably drives the founders of many new jewelry companies nuts: If Instagram likes were actual sales, they’d live in solid-gold houses.

Of course, it’s easy for a potential customer to follow and “like” a brand on social media. It’s much harder to get that follower to actually part with their hard-earned cash and buy something. It’s a dilemma every new brand faces, and one that the founders of Finley Jewelry have solved for in a pretty clever way: by giving their real, fine jewelry away for free. Yes, y’all: FOR. FREE.

It’s a proposition I was low-key suspicious of when I first saw it on Instagram. Here’s how it works: For the price of shipping (which costs $17.89, since the brand is currently shipping straight from its workshop in Hong Kong), Finley will send you your choice of a ring, earring, or choker from its “Essentials Collection” in silver or 14k gold vermeil for free. You can also purchase all three pieces for $40.

I tried it, and can confirm that it’s real. The Gigi Choker (pictured above) I received is lovely and well-made—I found it comparable in quality to similar pieces I own from Catbird—and its beading makes it a welcome upgrade from the basic delicate chain you probably already own. It’s just what my necklace-layering situation was missing.

The brand’s other styles are a minimalist pair of bar stud earrings and a simple, beaded band ring. More styles will come soon (and shipping costs will also drop once the brand starts fulfilling from Toronto). The promotion clearly works, because I’m now eager to see what the brand comes up with next—even if I have to, you know, pay for it.

Giving away free stuff is clearly a genius solution to the reluctant-customer problem—but how on earth is it possibly sustainable or profitable? “That’s the million-dollar question!” Kathleen Chan, Finley’s co-founder, laughs. She’s only kidding: Chan and longtime friend Nathan Tran Trinh launched the brand in August, having saved up what Chan calls “a healthy marketing budget.” However, the two have a background in marketing, and knew that getting new customers on board when the world has no shortage of cool jewelry brands would be both very difficult, and very expensive.

“We thought, what’s the best way to learn about a brand? Experience the product first-hand,” Chan says. ”We reworked our plan—instead of spending the money on flashy ads, we put all our advertising budget into covering pieces for our early customers. We hoped this would create grassroots buzz because hey, it’s not everyday someone gives you free bling, and lucky for us, it has.”

In fact, the buzz has been way bigger than Finley’s founders anticipated. “The response has been massive,” Chan reports. “Since we launched two months ago, we’ve had over 15,000 orders—our site actually glitched out temporarily from all the traffic.” Thus far, it’s a word-of-mouth phenomenon: people trying the brand and spreading the word to their friends. Even at full price, Finley’s pieces are pretty reasonable—they range from $80 to $110—but there’s just no denying the appeal of free. Not gonna lie, I have personally sent out a few IG messages of the “GIRL, did you see this company is giving away jewelry?!” kind.

It’s a marketing model that’s not totally without precedent: A year ago, activewear label Girlfriend Collective generated lots of social media buzz (and subsequent press coverage) by giving away its leggings for the price of shipping alone. The promotion has since ended, and while the brand did not respond to our request for current sales figures, anecdotal data points tell us the promotion helped Girlfriend Collective establish a foothold in the also quite-crowded athletic market.

Another thing Finley has in common with Girlfriend Collective is the brands’ dedication to sustainability and ethical manufacturing. I’m going to admit right here that I routinely side-eye such claims, because it often seems like every direct-to-consumer brand on the block is touting its ethical bona fides, while not actually copping to the massive problems in the industry, or doing much to solve them. But I was genuinely impressed with Chan’s knowledge of and candor about the human and environmental costs of jewelry manufacturing, and her brand’s earnest dedication to doing things a better way.

“Two of the biggest concerns we wanted to address are [the industry’s] unethical labor practices, and unsustainable water process,” Chan says. “It’s unfortunately common to see forced or compulsory labor, unsafe work environments, unregulated hours, the list goes on—it’s not something that should ever be accepted, let alone common in the industry.” To correct for this, Finley works only with SA8000-certified partners across its entire production process, which means each one is subjected to rigorous, ongoing audits to ensure they’re exceeding guidelines for safe working conditions and paying employees at all levels fair wages.

Chan also minces no words about the jewelry industry’s environmental ills—the biggest of which, she says, concerns water. “The water used to mine and manufacture jewelry contains a vast amount of corrosive waste metals,” she says. “More often than not, that water is dumped back into a water source that people and wildlife depend on, without being treated. ” This means water sources, such as rivers and streams, are contaminated, leading to “debilitated wildlife and potentially irreversible environmental damage.” To fight this, Finley puts all water used to craft its jewelry through a multi-step filtering process that separates the water from waste materials. The water is then sent to a recycling facility for use in other forms of manufacturing. “It’s not a cheap process,” Chan says, ”but we don’t believe something as crucial as clean drinking water should ever be put at risk.” To date, Finley has recycled over 67,000 gallons of water, and Chan says they will continue to put responsible wastewater handling at the forefront of their environmental policies.

Finley’s philosophy seems poised to overcome all manner of resistance to trying a new jewelry brand—whether you feel guilty for the environmental impact of your precious metals, or you just like to try before you buy. Even in a crowded jewelry market, that could be a recipe for success.

Chan reports that the brand plans to continue to help its manufacturing partners invest in cleaner technology, while adding new designs based on customer feedback. Currently, she says, customers are clamoring for ”customizable jewelry options and astrological-themed pieces, which you’ll see in our full line.” There are plans to introduce recycled metals into its collection down the line, too.

And about that full line: No official date as of press time, but it launches soon—and when it does, the free-piece campaign will be wrapping up, too. So get it while you still can.
