Killing Eve Season 2 Details: Jodie Comer Says It Will Have 'A Lot More' Deceptions

Before season one of Killing Eve started filming, creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge and star Jodie Comer met at a restaurant to work out a backstory for Comer’s character, Villanelle, a deadly (but stylish!) assassin. “We created a timeline and just threw ideas out there of what she could have gone through,” Comer tells Glamour. “Why she is the way she is, or what may have happened.” They decided she was in a home at some point, but got kicked out for her behavior. And then, “We were like, ‘Yeah, and she kills someone!'” Comer laughs at the memory. “We were throwing the craziest stuff at each other—I’m sure people were wondering [what was going on at our table].”

Now, those diners would be leaning in, hoping to hear more about what’s next for Villanelle. After the Emmy-nominated series debuted on BBC America last year, it became a hit with critics and fans alike. That’s thanks to a winning combo of witty, genre-pushing writing and next-level performances by Comer and her costar Sandra Oh. Based on Luke Jennings’s Codename Villanelle series, Oh plays Eve, a refreshingly normal M15 officer, who becomes obsessed with finding Comer’s Villanelle, a wildly confident, often petulant, probably psychopathic killer.

Their cat-and-mouse dynamic is what makes the show so unexpected and fun to watch. And as season two approaches, it feels like there’s still so much more to unpack about the women and their many complexities. Comer says that Waller-Bridge always had a clear vision, especially for Villanelle. “She was always going on about her naughtiness, her childishness, which I love—that mischief and fearlessness and lack of caring for what people think,” Comer says. “But then, she’s a woman and extremely talented and good at her job. There’s this side of her that’s like, ‘Do not fuck with her.'”

For Comer, the most important thing was to make Villanelle, a contract killer with a closet full of couture, relatable. “Assassins always seem, to me, to be portrayed as superheroes that you can’t really access,” she explains. “There’s a wall up, where you’re like, ‘I’d like to see what’s going on underneath all of this.’ There’s a lot of redeemable qualities about her, which I think enables the audience to be on her side sometimes. Strangely, sometimes you respect her.”

BBC AMERICA

“I think sometimes what is charming about these characters is their looks,” she continues. “Like, he’s a psychopath or a murderer, but he’s so…the only thing you like about him is that he’s really good-looking. Villanelle is so much more than that. Her charm is not just in the way she looks, but the way she acts and carries herself.”

This is true, though her insanely gorgeous fashion sense helps. Comer agrees. “She completely expresses herself through her clothes. You know she gets paid well for what she does, and that’s how she likes to spend her money,” she says. “She very much dresses based on where she is in the world, which is influenced by how she feels. I don’t think she has a set style. She would probably try to wear everything and anything, but because she wears it with confidence it works. That’s probably the key to her: her confidence.”

Comer says season two will keep unlocking more of Villanelle’s many contradictions, but you won’t be seeing a young actress play “baby Villanelle” in flashbacks: “What we really explore is these flickers of moments, where we feel like we’re getting in there of who she was and is. She is forced into situations where she has to try and be honest, and I think that’s really interesting for the audience to see.”

Killing Eve Season 2: Here's Everything We Know So Far

From the third installment of Stranger Things to The Hills reboot, the universe is giving us a lot of reasons to put our DVRs in overdrive this year. And come spring, the broadcast gods will award us with another can’t-miss show: season two of Killing Eve.

The suspenseful cat-and-mouse series, which follows M15 agent Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) as she attempts to track down unhinged assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer), is so gripping that three days before it had even made its TV debut last year, BBC America announced that the show was being renewed for a second season.

So what can we expect from season two of the hit series? The season one finale wrapped with a pretty big cliffhanger that left audiences with a number of questions (and high blood pressure)—the largest of which was (spoilers ahead!): What happened to Villanelle?

Well, a newly-released trailer for BBC Drama’s 2019 shows appears to give a few clues. In it, you can see Villanelle is alive and well—but Eve seems to be back with her husband.

In another teaser that’s not available to embed yet, Villanelle stares directly into the camera and says, “I hope you haven’t forgotten about me.” That seems to indicate that the antagonist will make a fiery return to the second season. (See that here.) In another, Eve is asked, “Why are you two so interested in each other? What really happened in Paris?”

Unfortunately, those teasers are short. So while most of what’s in store for season two is still largely a mystery, here’s what we do know about the return of the series so far:

The release date: According to trailers, the show is set to drop in 2019. Our guess is it’ll happen in the spring—similar to season one’s release in April of last year—though an exact date has yet to be announced. We do know, however, that the cast has already wrapped filming, thanks to an Instagram post from Jodie Comer early last month.

The cast: The show’s leads, Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, will reprise their roles as Eve Polastri and Villanelle, respectively. Fiona Shaw will also rejoin the cast this season as mysterious operative Carolyn. Newcomers to the show include Nina Sosanya (Good Omens) and Edward Bluemel (The Commuter), according to Deadline.

Is it spring yet?

Kendall and Kylie Jenner Went to Drake's New Year's Eve Party, and I'm Confused

Kendall Jenner confused me once last year when she posted a photo of herself fully awake but captioned it “I love naps,” and now she’s at it again. Her head-scratching action this time? Attending Drake’s New Year’s Eve party with sister Kylie Jenner, even though he’s infamously feuding with their brother-in-law, Kanye West.

Don’t know about that sitch? Here’s some quick background info: Kanye ignited his tumultuous relationship with Drake in mid-December when he posted a series of tweets accusing him of texting Kris Jenner and “taking food out [his] idol’s kids’ mouths.” What Kanye means by this is unclear, but we can assume he and Drake aren’t BFFs.

But that didn’t stop Kendall and Kylie from swinging by the “One Dance” rapper’s NYE bash at Delilah in Los Angeles. Check out a photo of the shindig, below. Do you see the woman in the neon green shirt? That’s Kendall! And the one with the blue wig? Yup, that’s Kylie.

PHOTO: Getty Images

Here are up-close looks at Kendall and Kylie from that night for more proof:

And, for a little refresher, here are some of the charged tweets both Kanye and Kim wrote to Drake just a few weeks ago.

The kicker to all of this is that on the same night Kylie and Kendall attended this party, Kanye was literally going off on Drake for following Kim on Instagram. TMZ has all of those screen shots, as well as Kanye’s since-deleted tweet from New Year’s Day that read, “I love Drake 2019 we will all heal.” That’s a positive message and certainly suggests Drake and Kanye’s feud is ending—but still! It’s hilarious Kendall and Kylie seemingly had nothing else to do on New Year’s Eve but attend this party. The drama of it all!

And they’ve could’ve done so many other things, too—like eat small slices of pizza in ball gowns or stare at each other in silence. These activities—which, yes, Kendall and Kylie have both actually done—are far less dramatic than attending the party of their brother-in-law’s temporary Twitter nemesis. What does Kris Jenner think?!

Taylor Swift Threw a Truly Epic New Year's Eve Costume Party

If Taylor Swift’s Instagram has taught us anything, it’s that the girl knows how to host a party. She’s stolen the show on the Fourth of July in past years thanks to her red-white-and-blue blowouts and hosted what looks like a bomb AMAs afterparty back in October—but now, it seems, she’s upped her party game to throwing truly great New Year’s Eve celebrations, too.

She and her squad offered fans a glimpse via Instagram at the creative way she rang in the New Year: Swift had friends like Blake Lively and Gigi Hadid come over dressed as their childhood superheroes. Lively went for her best Dorothy Gale gingham; Hadid gave us Mary Poppins realness; and Swift showed off an under-the-sea Little Mermaid getup, complete with a bright red wig and a shiny green tail. The party also featured Ms. Frizzle (remember the Magic School Bus series?), Frida Kahlo, Audrey Hepburn, and Cinderella.

“Mary Poppins, Audrey, Ariel, Ms. Frizzle, Cinderella, Gwen, Mr. Toad, Avril, Nancy Drew, Posh Spice, Rizzo, Frida Kahlo, Steve Irwin, Dorothy.. This new year we decided to dress up as our childhood heroes. Sending you all love and hope going into 2019,” Taylor wrote on Instagram. She posted several shots from the bash, including one of the guests in their getups and one of her sharing a drink with Ryan Reynolds.

Stylist Mimi Cuttrell also posted a picture of Hadid in her excellent Mary Poppins costume.

Swift closed out 2018 by dropping a concert special from her Reputation tour on Netflix. She released a trailer for the film earlier this month, writing on social media, “You made this tour so insanely fun for all of us on stage, and I’m really excited that we will have this memento of the memories we all made together this year.”

And it seems like a casual screening of the doc was in the party plans last night, too: Gigi Hadid posted an Instagram Story showing a brief, slightly blurry moment from the Netflix special.

All of this came after Taylor had a headline-making 2018: She spoke up politically and got active in Tennessee for the first time since critics began urging her not to stay silent in the wake of Donald Trump’s election. But she seemed to be kissing a long year goodbye with this party—and has hinted that she has plenty in store, including new music, in 2019.

How All Your Favorite Celebrities Celebrated New Year's Eve 2018

2018, a year that sometimes felt like a century, has just hours left in it until the clocks chime midnight and 2019 kicks off. The last day of a year is, as ever, a time for reflection—and, of course, for cutting loose as the new year dawns. Social media posts abound on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook sharing photo recaps of the year, listing good (and not-so-good) memories, and sending good vibes for a great—or at least better—2019. And that’s true of celebrities, too: Some spent their New Year’s Eve thinking some deep thoughts; others headed out for a night of parties. Other celebs chose to skip the shindigs all together and head out on vacation (hey, can’t blame ’em). As we all get ready to say “Thank U, Next” to 2018, here’s how some of our favorite famous people are ringing in the new year.

Kendall Jenner

Jenner, along with sisters Kourtney and Kim Kardashian, are hitting the slopes in Aspen—and, of course, doing the most for the ‘gram.

Lena Waithe

“I ain’t got no New Years resolutions. I’m just gon keep doing the same shit. ?,” Waithe captioned her chilled-out Instagram. We support this 100 percent.

Ariana Grande

No word on her evening plans, but Ari is ready to say goodbye to 2018—which has been a tough one for her personally, if an awesome one professionally. “farewell 2018, you fuck,” she posted on Instagram. “i hope this new year brings you all much laughter, clarity and healing. ? be gentle with yourselves and each other. if we made it thru this last year, we’ll for sure make it thru this one. thank you for everything. ?”

Kourtney Kardashian

Along with copying her little sister’s bikini photo shoot, Kardashian is also ringing in the new year with her ex Scott Disick and his girlfriend, Sofia Richie.

Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas, Sophie Turner, and Joe Jonas

Also living that après-ski life? The newlyweds and their favorite travel buddies in Switzerland. Looks like they’re also taking up roulette.

Anne Hathaway

The actress was feeling optimistic in her New Year’s Eve Instagram: “Thanking the lessons of 2018, especially the ones I feel like cursing;Welcoming 2019 with all the sweetness, softness and gratitude in my heart; Wishing blessings and abundance for us all.”

Naomi Watts

Watts made a fantastic choice to kick off the new year with some sunshine in Puerto Rico.

Gabrielle Union

“All my unfinished work/projects from 2018 looking at me as I prepare my vision board for 2019 like ???,” she captioned her ‘gram. Same, TBH.

Karlie Kloss

Kloss, who’s been honeymooning in Africa with new husband Joshua Kushner, looks like she’ll be ringing in 2019 in a tropical setting.

Kim Kardashian

Kim reminded us that she and Paris Hilton are BFFs again, and we’re living for this going-into-2019 reconciliation.

Evan Rachel Wood

Wood is ringing in the New Year in Italy, and it’s fine; we’re not jealous.

Serena Williams

The tennis legend is getting warmed up for tomorrow’s game against other tennis legend Roger Federer—with her little one in her arms.

Lucy Hale

The actress seems to be ringing in 2019 from NoLa (please have a hurricane for us).

Khloé Kardashian

The new mom posted a video collage of some of her moments from 2018—and, well, let’s just say she had a few ups and downs this year. The video was accompanied by a lengthy caption looking back on all of it: “2018 was a roller coaster of emotions. My soul endured, the highest highs and the lowest lows. Praise be to GOD because at this moment, I’m at an all time high. This season the devil did not rest, I was tested, time and time again. I came out of my experiences stronger than ever! My spirit can not be broken!! This year I faced my challenges by trusting myself, not always in my decisions but in my ability to overcome whatever I was being tested with. I now know I am a conqueror, I am stronger than I ever could have imagined, and no matter which obstacle I face, I will always overcome it.”

Drew Barrymore

The actress posted a pic of her cats, because really, what is there to even say?

Amanda Seyfried

The Mamma Mia! star is basically already in 2019.

Candice Swanepoel

The model is ringing in the new year from Cape Town, South Africa.

Cardi B

It seems appropriate that Cardi started her 2019 ahead of most of us—in Australia, no less.

Kylie Jenner

The lip kit mogul really seems to be embracing the “new year, new you” vibe with some icy blue hair.

Jennifer Garner

The actress shared a grateful and hopeful message heading into 2019: “I am grateful for all of the friendship, health, silliness and growth (even painful) of 2018. I am prayerfully grateful for my children and family. Please, more of the same next year, for all of us.”

Kristin Cavallari

Cavallari is getting some extra snugs in before the clock strikes midnight.

Kelsea Ballerini's New Years Eve 2018 Playlist and 2019 Resolutions

December has always been a special month for Kelsea Ballerini: Two years ago on Christmas Day, she got engaged to fellow country singer Morgan Evans. In December 2017, she and Morgan became husband and wife, and on December 2 they celebrated their first anniversary. To cap it all off, Ballerini, 25, will close out the year with her first performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.

“It’s a perfect way to end a beautiful year and begin this next season,” Ballerini tells Glamour.com. “I’ve watched New Year’s Rockin’ Eve every year growing up, so I can’t wait to count down to midnight and jam!”

Personal highlights aside, 2018 was full of professional achievements: She celebrated the success of her third studio album, Unapologetically, toured with Keith Urban, collaborated with The Chainsmokers, joined The Voice as a special coach, and was nominated for her second Grammy award (Best Country Album). “This was a year of pushing myself,” she says. “Everything was intentionally out of my comfort zone.”

Ballerini says that because of those risks, she feels stronger as an artist and more inspired than ever. Case in point: Next month she’ll join Kelly Clarkson on “The Miss Me More” tour, and then in February it’s off to the Grammys.

Until then—and before the ball drops—we asked Ballerini to take one more look back and tell us about the songs that meant the most to her this year. From a “badass” jam to a Taylor Swift fave, there’s something for everyone. Play on!

“Without Me” by Halsey

“[You can] leave all the heartbreak behind with this jam.”

“Dance to This” (ft. Ariana Grande) by Troye Sivan

“Whether you’re celebrating with friends and family [at home] or out at a big party, this one makes you move.”

“New Year’s Day” by Taylor Swift

“Tay has a song for everything. :)”

[embedded content]

“La Di Da” by Lennon Stella

“[My] 2019 resolution to things that don’t matter: ‘la da da di da.’”

[embedded content]

“Closer to You” by Carly Pearce

“This one is for all the new lovers that 2018 brought together. The best feeling in the world!”

[embedded content]

“The Way You Look Tonight” by Michael Bublé

“This song makes all of my party playlists. It’s the classic that takes everyone to a sweet, nostalgic place.”

[embedded content]

“Get the Party Started” by P!nk

“This is the perfect song to play when you’re getting your glitter on before the big night. Plus, singing along to P!nk in the mirror makes you feel like a badass.”

[embedded content]

“Day Drunk” by Morgan Evans

“I get to share my midnight kiss with this handsome guy, and this song can put anyone in a celebratory mood.”

[embedded content]

“This Feeling” by The Chainsmokers (ft. me!)

“Being a part of this song has been one of my favorite parts of 2018. I love these guys, and I love the message of always leading with your heart.”

[embedded content]

“There’s No Way” by Lauv (ft. Julia Michaels)

“Two of my favorite voices and songwriters together made one of my favorite jams of the year.”
