Emilia Clarke Just Revealed What Happens When Dany Meets Arya and Sansa on Game of Thrones

Surely one of the most nerve-wracking scenes on Game of Thrones season eight will be when Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) meets Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) for the first time. Don’t forget the Mother of Dragons already has a lot stacked against her: Her family has done some pretty terrible things to the North (a.k.a Stark territory), including burning Sansa’s Uncle Brandon alive and kidnapping Jon’s mother, Lyanna. Sure, Jon and Dany may be a couple now, but I have a hard time believing that’s going to make Sansa and Arya turn a blind eye to these crimes.

Clarke confirmed as much in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. She says Dany’s first interaction with Arya and Sansa seems fine at first, but it soon becomes clear they’re not all going to become best friends.

“I like to think that it’s like Meet the Parents,” Emilia Clarke tells EW. “It’s like: ‘I hope they like me. [Jon Snow’s] wicked. It’s a real good thing we got going on. He’s the final piece. We’re destined for greatness and world domination is a breath away.’ And so I need to be like: ‘Can I braid your hair, Sansa? Little Arya, come over here, let’s play some cricket.’ So there’s that. And then, very, very quickly, it’s like: ‘Wait, is it just me, or do they hate me?’”

Oof. This does not sound pleasant at all. But those who keep up with Game of Thrones theories shouldn’t be too surprised. It’s long been speculated that Sansa and Dany are going to outright hate each other this season. Sansa’s loyalty to her family—as evidenced by the scaly outfit she wears in the photo, below—all but confirms Dany is on her shit list. And maybe even Arya’s hit list.

(The outfit I’m referring to is in the fifth slide.)

This icy meet-and-greet happens during episode one of the new season—which premieres this Sunday on HBO—so you won’t have to wait long before finding out what happens.

Emilia Clarke Just Shared Never-Before-Seen Photos Taken After Her Brain Surgery

Emilia Clarke, best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, recently opened up about the brain aneurysms that almost took her life. In an essay for The New Yorker, Clarke said she suffered the first aneurysm when she was 24 years old, shortly after completing filming for season one of Game of Thrones. She was rushed to the E.R. after collapsing at the gym with an excruciating headache and was left with temporary aphasia, or language impairment, after her first surgery. Then doctors discovered a second aneurysm that required a second surgery. Clarke was terrified she’d never act again.

“My job—my entire dream of what my life would be—centered on language, around communication,” she wrote in The New Yorker. “Without that, I was lost.”

Now, in a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Clarke has shared more about her surgeries and recovery—even sharing some new never-before-seen photos of herself in the hospital.

“So, with the second one, there was a bit of my brain that actually died,” she says of her second aneurysm in the interview. “If a part of your brain doesn’t get blood to it for a minute, it will just no longer work. It’s like you short-circuit. So I had that. And they didn’t know what it was. They literally were looking at the brain and being like, ‘Well, we think it could be her concentration, it could be her peripheral vision [affected].'”

“I always say it’s my taste in men that’s no longer there,” she continues. “That’s the part of my brain, yeah, my decent taste in men.”

While she’s able to joke about it now, there was a time when the actress was very scared about what her future might look like. “I was like, ‘What if something has short-circuited in my brain and I can’t act anymore?'” she says. “I mean, literally it’s been my reason for living for a very long time.”

In the interview Clarke reveals that she actually found it easier to stay optimistic during her second surgery and recovery than her first. When asked how she got through it all, the mother of dragons answered, “That was very much like a day-to-day thing. And I definitely went through a period of being down, putting it mildly.”

Luckily, Clarke did indeed pull through and has since founded a charity called SameYou, which is focused on brain injury recovery and rehabilitation.

Emilia Clarke's Braid at the Game of Thrones Season 8 Premiere Nodded to Daenerys

Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons—that’s how most of us came to know actress Emilia Clarke on Game of Thrones. But we should also probably add Master of Red Carpet Beauty to her title.

Seriously, she (and her glam squad) never disappoint whether it’s debuting a new hair color or going all-in on dramatic hair and makeup, like she did for the GoT season eight premiere at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Wednesday night.

Let’s start with the hair, complete with an intricate braid that hairstylist Jenny Cho confirmed was a nod to Clarke’s most famous character. “EMILIA ?. For tonight’s look, I wanted to incorporate a braid as a nod to #DaenerysTargaryen, the queen of dragons #khaleesi,” Cho captioned an image of the look on Instagram. From the loops and varying braid widths to the sprigs of hair springing forth and visible from the front, it’s everything Dany stans could dream of.

The makeup, by Kate Lee, was equally dramatic—with both a bold eye and lip—and fit for a queen.

Lee also shared a shot of the Chanel makeup kit she used to create Clarke’s look. She broke down all the products she used in her Instagram. For the strong ’90s lip, she combined Chanel Le Crayon Lèvres in Rouge Noir ($31), Chanel Hydra Beauty Nourishing Lip Care ($50), and the darkest shade from Chanel Les 4 Ombres Multi-Effect Quadra Eye Shadow ($62) as a lip powder.

On her eyes, Lee relied on Chanel Les 4 Ombres in Mystère et Intensité ($62), Troy Surratt Smoky Eye Baton in Canons de Beauté Burgundy ($35), Chanel Inimitable Mascara in Brun ($32), and Chanel Le Volume Mascara in Ecorces ($32). She also filled in Clarke’s beautifully strong brows with Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Miineral Brow Pencil in Brown ($37) and Chantecaille Full Brow Perfecting Gel ($40).

Excuse us, while we now try to go re-create this perfect vision for the weekend.

Emilia Clarke Just Called Out Kit Harrington for Complaining About His *Game of Thrones* Shoots

Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, and the rest of the Game of Thrones cast are currently doing the press rounds for season eight, which premieres April 14 on HBO. Granted, the show doesn’t necessarily need promo at this point—it’s a full-blown phenomenon—but we’ll happily watch the new interviews and dissect them accordingly.

Take Clarke‘s latest one, which happened on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tuesday night. The Mother of Dragons hilariously teased her co-star Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) for complaining that his GoT shoots are intense. Colbert co-signed this, saying the last time Harrington was on his show, he complained about the tough GoT shoots in Iceland, where he wore about “40 pounds of fur.”

“He’s got the worst, I know,” Clarke said jokingly. “He does really like to tell everyone that. ‘It’s really heavy, it’s really heavy.'”

The actress continued, “That’s cold weather in Iceland, but there’s short filming hours because there’s only, like, four hours of daylight. Whereas, I’m in a quarry in, you know, Malta, in 100-degree heat—passing out every single season because I have two sets of hair on my head. But yeah, so Kit’s always complaining that he’s got it worst, but he’s definitely got it better. He’s drinking by 2 P.M. because there’s only, like, two hours of daylight.”

Watch her explain this for yourself, below:

Emilia Clarke also revealed she told her mother about how Game of Thrones ends. “I’ve got to be honest, I did, I did, not just my dog, I told my—I wasn’t supposed…I told my mom, but the good thing about telling my mom these things is she’s a vault because she’s just done forgotten it—I told her,” Clarke said. “I was like, ‘I’m not going to tell you twice, you missed your chance!'”

Luckily, we’ll all know who reigns on the Iron Throne soon enough.

Lena Headey Wrote the Kindest Message to Emilia Clarke About Her Brain Aneurysms

Game of Thrones star Lena Headey wrote a beautiful, supportive message to her costar Emilia Clarke, who revealed in a New Yorker essay on Thursday (March 21) she had suffered two brain aneurysms while filming the hit HBO show.

“It took me a while to know this woman (there are 64000 of us after all),” Headey posted on Instagram alongside a photo of Clarke. “Not until she spoke to me about her experience did I fully realize the warrior she truly is (MOD for real x209840000) she does really great things for causes that deserve it. She’s kind and determined and funny and aware. #Thursday’s MVP … Here’s to @emilia_clarke ?????⭐️⭐️⭐️?.”

MOD, for uninitiated into Game of Thrones, means Mother of Dragons, the nickname of Clarke’s character on the show.

Lena Headey plays Cersei Lannister on GoT, and Emilia Clarke plays Daenerys. Their characters hardly interact onscreen—they’ve shared only one scene—which is why Headey’s message is particularly exciting.

In her essay, Clarke outlines her emotional journey with the two brain aneurysms, which happened at such busy times in her life and career.

“I lost all hope,” Clarke writes. “I couldn’t look anyone in the eye. There was terrible anxiety, panic attacks. I was raised never to say, ‘It’s not fair’; I was taught to remember that there is always someone who is worse off than you. But, going through this experience for the second time, all hope receded. I felt like a shell of myself. So much so that I now have a hard time remembering those dark days in much detail. My mind has blocked them out. But I do remember being convinced that I wasn’t going to live.”

Read Clarke’s piece in its entirety here. Game of Thrones season eight premieres Sunday, April 14, at 8:00 P.M. ET on HBO.

Emilia Clarke's Aneurysms Almost Killed Her—Women Need to Know the Risks

Emilia Clarke revealed earlier this week that while the world was falling at the feet of the ultimate feminist queen she embodies on Game of Thrones, she suffered not one but two brain aneurysms that nearly killed her.

Aneurysms—which are 1.5 times more common in women—are about as scary a diagnosis as you can get. They sound innocuous enough: blood-filled sacs that form on the side of a blood vessel, almost like a berry hanging off a vine. But they’re ticking time bombs.

Aneurysms hide in the brain rarely giving off any warnings that they’re there until it’s too late. If an aneurysm ruptures (which is also 1.5 times more likely to happen in women), it can be catastrophic. “For a patient who has an any rupture like Clarke did, the reality is that 40 percent of those patients don’t survive,” says Jeremy Heit, M.D., Ph.D, assistant professor of radiology and neurosurgery at Stanford University. “Of the people that survive, a third of them will do great like Clarke and make a full recovery but the other two-thirds will be left with some degree of disability.”

In an essay for The New Yorker, Clarke shared that after she’d finished filming season one of GOT, she was in the middle of a workout when suddenly it felt as though her brain was being squeezed inside her skull. “My trainer had me get into the plank position, and I immediately felt as though an elastic band were squeezing my brain. I tried to ignore the pain and push through it, but I just couldn’t,” she wrote. She dragged herself to the bathroom “and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill. Meanwhile, the pain—shooting, stabbing, constricting pain—was getting worse,” she continued. “At some level, I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged.”

An aneurysm rupture is often described as the “worst headache of my life”—the phrase is so consistent, doctors are taught to immediately investigate a possible aneurysm when they hear it. “The way patients describe it to me, it’s like a light switch. It’s instantaneous, like someone flicked a switch and they just have this horrendous headache,” Dr. Heit says. It’s an entirely different category of pain, he says, worse than any normal headache or even migraine. It’s so remarkable, “the vast majority of people know that there’s a problem,” he says. “If it’s something that’s really quite different or it really is the worst headache of your life, don’t mess around with that,” Dr. Heit says. “You need to get to a hospital and get evaluated.” Other key signs to look for: vomiting, dizziness, loss of consciousness, and stiffness in your neck. Some patients even have seizures.

At the hospital, Clarke was diagnosed with a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)—a type of stroke and the neurological term for a ruptured aneurysm.

Doctors aren’t sure completely sure what causes aneurysms—lifestyle factors like hypertension, smoking, and drug use have all been linked to aneurysms and genetics might also play a role—or why they happen in women as young as Clarke, who was only 24 at the time. (Aneurysms typically happen in women over 35.)

Doctors do know that a nightmare gym scenario like Clarke’s isn’t an uncommon way for an aneurysm to pop. Increased blood pressure from a strenuous activity like working out—or even orgasm—can cause that quietly ticking time bomb to explode. Emotional stress even has the potential to cause an aneurysm to rupture, says Gary Steinberg, M.D., Ph.D., chief of neurosurgery at Stanford Healthcare and chair of the department of neurosurgery at Stanford University.
