Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Review: This Fairy Tale Updates the Disney Princess in Subtle, Powerful Ways

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Disney’s sequel to the 2014 retelling of Sleeping Beauty with Angelina Jolie that’s in theaters now, is sort of strange and dark for a fairy tale. And naturally, that’s what makes it so great. The movie covers a lot of things—motherhood, the loss of innocence, love, hate, immigration, power, magic—without losing focus. The costumes are, and I cannot stress this enough, excellent. And best of all, it honors the most enduring tropes of Disney fairy tales (spoiler: good triumphs over evil) while updating the princess narrative in subtle and powerful ways.

Just look at Aurora’s (Elle Fanning) story. She’s now 21 years old and engaged to Prince Philip. It’s hardly surprising or revolutionary that she’s marrying her first boyfriend, but we then learn they’ve been dating for five years. Five years! Compare that to the “love at first sight, married the next day” plot of, well, just pick a movie. Aurora is no sleepy princess, either. She’s the strong-willed barefoot queen of the Moors, the forest wonderland where magical creatures live, having given her previous castle to “the people.” We stan an egalitarian monarch.

Of course, this will come as no surprise to those who saw the first film, a decidedly feminist reboot of Sleeping Beauty. But Linda Woolverton—the screenwriter behind both Maleficent films and basically your entire childhood (Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, hello!)—tells me that turning a tale of problematic true love on its head was a challenge at first. While writing the first film, she struggled with making the Disney villain sympathetic. “What on Earth happened to this woman that she was that pissed off?” she asked herself. And so, “I had to give her a real reason.”

The answer: She wrote a scene in which Maleficent is drugged by a paramour and wakes to find he’s cut off her wings. “It was…nothing we ever said out loud, but it feels like a date rape,” she tells me. “It’s funny, I worked really closely with Angelina Jolie on the whole script—she was fantastic—and we never actually said date rape. It wasn’t until after that it was like, ‘Oh, huh, that’s what that is.'”

That powerful metaphor in Maleficent’s backstory wasn’t the only twist in the first film, though. You may recall that it’s actually Maleficent herself who breaks the sleeping curse by kissing Aurora on the forehead. (Turns out the unconditional true love of a mother is greater than that of a random paramour’s.) That moment was yet another instance of Woolverton realizing, after the fact, what she had written. “For the first Maleficent, I was talking [in an interview] about the moment when Maleficent wakes Aurora up and gives this speech, and I broke down,” she says. “It was so terrible. I realized that the whole movie was an apology to my daughter for getting a divorce.” She adds, “I didn’t even realize it until that moment that the whole movie was about that.”

Disney+ Will Have So Many Movies, and People Are Freaking Out

Disney’s soon-to-be-released streaming platform, Disney+, unveiled a large chunk of its catalog on Monday, October 14, and the internet is freaking out. The service, which launches in November, will be the home to all your favorites under the Disney umbrella—and that’s an extensive list. Princess movies, Marvel flicks (since Marvel is owned by Disney), Disney Channel TV shows—all of this content will be available on Disney+. But what’s exciting fans the most is the addition of Disney Channel Original Movies—like Double Teamed, Pixel Perfect, and Smart House—to the lineup. Yup! Disney+ is shaping up to be your childhood in streaming form.

Obviously, those who grew up watching Disney in the ’90s and early ’00s are thrilled about this slate. “If you don’t see me out after November 12th, mind your own business,” one person wrote. Another tweeted, “Thanks to #DisneyPlus I can watch Luck of the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day like I used to.”

“Looks like imma have to borrow somebody’s Disney Plus,” a third fan posted. Meanwhile, someone else cheekily tweeted, “Today I’m learning that you guys all grew up in fancy houses with Disney Channel subscriptions. When the Caviar Channel launches you guys are suddenly gonna be like, ‘omg beluga DEFINED my childhood!!!’” There have also been videos, GIFs, and memes galore celebrating Disney+. Check out just a few of the reactions, below:

Perhaps the buzziest original TV show coming to Disney+ is the Lizzie McGuire reboot starring Hilary Duff. The actor confirmed this was happening August 24 at the D23 Expo. “I am beyond excited to be home again, back with my girl,” Duff wrote on her Instagram at the time. A release date isn’t known yet.

Disney+ becomes available to the general public on November 12. It will surely be what dreams are made of.

Gigi Hadid on Her Favorite Scent, Travel Tips, and Disney World

It would be easy to cast Gigi Hadid off as just a pretty face. The model certainly seems comfortable decked out in couture or rocking an insane pair of eyelashes on the Met Gala carpet. And while Top Model life seems to suit Gigi just fine, she’s surprisingly grounded. From even a short encounter, it’s clear how grateful she is: “In this job, you meet so many different people and those can become the most fulfilling moments and friendships,” she tells Glamour.

One of these friendships is with fashion designer Michael Kors. The two have a longstanding partnership, and recently came together for the campaign of Kors’ newest fragrance, Wonderlust, a warm, spicy scent perfect for a summer full of adventure. In the campaign, Gigi emerges from the sea holding a giant perfume bottle and then proceeds to live her best life on the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen (no, I’m not jealous). We caught up with the model to talk adventure, fragrance, and to answer some of Glamour’s Big Beauty Questions.

Glamour: What’s your first scent memory?

Gigi Hadid: My first memories of scent are based on fresh air, nature, and the things I like to do outside—whether that’s being at the barn or the way the sun hits flowers and makes the air fragrant.

What does wanderlust mean to you?

Being curious and seeing where that takes you. Adventure, discovery, and expressing yourself creatively fuels us and keeps us growing. That’s why I love traveling, being exposed to new cultures is a constant reminder that we’re all such a small part of this world and have so much to learn.

What’s your favorite place to wear the fragrance?

The afternoons when you’re basking in the sun, or even just wishing you were. I love to wear it on my neck and my wrists, and sometimes in my hair. The scent is like an escape—a little luxury that takes you away. I love the floral notes and the versatility, it goes from a day at the beach to a night out with friends.

Miley Cyrus Just Addressed the Rumor She Feuded With Demi and Selena During Their Disney Years

Let me take you back to 2009: Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Selena Gomez were all queens on Disney Channel, and there were rumors that they hated each other. Well, it was more so Cyrus versus Gomez and Lovato. There were opposing YouTube channels, squabbles over boys—all the makings of catfight fodder that fed tabloids for years.

But none of it was grounded in reality. Gomez confirmed as much in 2016, telling W magazine that she and Cyrus “never feuded.” And now Cyrus is echoing this sentiment. In a new interview with Capital FM, the Younger Now singer says there was never any competition between herself, Gomez, and Lovato. She mentioned this while defending these lyrics in her new song, “Cattitude”: “I love you Nicki, but I listen to Cardi.” Some fans thought these words were fueling the alleged feud between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, but Cyrus says they do just the opposite.

“I don’t think there is beef now anymore,” Cyrus told Capital FM in regards to the rappers. “I think that you’re allowed to enjoy two artists who fill a similar lane.”

Just like fans can enjoy Cyrus’ music and Gomez’s and Lovato’s. “I just always grew up collaborating with Selena [Gomez] and Demi [Lovato], and there was never competition. Ariana [Grande] is one of my best friends,” she said.

Listen to Cyrus explain this for yourself in the clip, below.

Miley Cyrus further proved squashed any beef by posting pics from her concert over the weekend and captioning them, “I love you Selena but I listen to Demi” and “I love you me but I listen to Ari”

And in March, she uploaded this video of her and Gomez rocking out at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards:

So it’s safe to say there was never any actual drama between these women. Just people looking it, which, sadly, is nothing new.

The Actress Who Voices Princess Tiana Asked Disney to Address Whitewashing Complaints

Earlier this summer, after new shots of all the Disney princesses hanging out together in the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph sequel were released, fans noticed something was…off.

From what it appeared, Princess Tiana, the star of The Princess and the Frog and Disney’s first black princess, had been animated to have more Eurocentric features, much different than she’d originally looked in the 2009 film. Her skin seemed lighter, her curly hair looked more like loose waves, and her nose had been noticeably slimmed down—all of which prompted cries of whitewashing on social media.

The backlash continued to mount until last week when The Wall Street Journal reported that Disney had made the decision to reanimate Tiana’s CGI model, after meeting with Anika Noni Rose, the voice of Princess Tiana, and black advocacy group Color of Change.

“Disney’s decision to restore Princess Tiana’s image to that of an unapologetically Black princess with full lips, dark skin and dark hair in Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 is a victory for Color Of Change members, Black children and their parents, and Black audiences who want to see the variety of shades, shapes and sizes of Black characters accurately represented in the arts,” the advocacy group released in a statement, per WSJ.

On Monday, Rose took to Instagram to share more about the conversation she’d had with Disney’s animators regarding Tiana’s appearance. In her statement, she revealed she was “surprised” by the changes that had been made to Tiana, but “glad” to see support from those outraged by the tweaks.

“My team and I immediately put in a call to the studio to talk about the visual changes, and three weeks ago I had a meeting in person with the Wreck It Ralph team, my original animator Mark Henn, and others,” she wrote. “They explained how CGI animation did different things to the characters’ color tones in different light compared to hand drawn original characters, and I was able to express how important it is to the little girls (and let’s face it, grown women) who felt represented by her that her skin tone stay as rich as it had been, and that her nose continue to be the little round nose that Mark so beautifully rendered in the movie; the same nose on my very own face and on many other little brown faces around the world, that we so rarely get to see represented in fantasy.”

When The Princess and the Frog was in production, Rose recalled, she’d specifically requested that Henn give Tiana “a round nose, full lips, and that she be left handed.” In the recent meeting, she wrote that he’d explained to her how the animators were working to restore those important qualities of Tiana’s in her CGI rendering. “It was important to me to hear what Disney had to say, and to have an open dialogue about legacy and representation,” she wrote. “I also appreciate that this far into the process Disney had enough care and respect for all who love Princess Tiana and her legacy to spend the time and money to make the adjustments necessary. In doing so, they recognize that her legacy is also their legacy; two things I’m very proud to be a part of.”

Glamour has reached out to Disney for comment and will update this story upon response.
