Miley Cyrus Just Performed for the First Time Since the Liam Hemsworth Split at the 2019 MTV VMAs


Miley Cyrus has had an eventful few weeks. to say the least. It was just a little over two weeks ago that the singer and her husband, Liam Hemsworth, announced they were splitting up. Soon after, photos of her kissing Kaitlynn Carter (Brody Jenner’s ex and one of the stars of The Hills: New Beginnings) while the two were on vacation in Italy.

Oh, and on top of all of this she released a new single— called “Slide Away”—and prepped the performance we just saw on tonight’s MTV VMAs.

It feels like not that long ago at the VMAs, we saw Cyrus twerking all over the stage; for this performance, however, she kept things super pared down. The performance included a set of string musicians who lined the stage as she sang using a single microphone. Cyrus wore a simple black minidress, and the performance aired in black and white for viewers at home. This setting allowed the focus to be on her incredible vocals and the emotional lyrics.

As soon as the song was released last week, people started to surmise that it might be about the breakup with Hemsworth thanks to lines like, “Once upon a time, it was paradise. / Once upon a time, I was paralyzed. / Think I’m gonna miss these harbor lights, / But it’s time to let it go. / Once upon a time, it was made for us. / Woke up one day, it had turned to dust. / Baby, we were found, but now we’re lost, / So it’s time to let it go.” Or when she sings, “So won’t you slide away / Back to the ocean, I’ll go back to the city lights.”

Fans online loved the VMAs performance. “I literally have chills all over. Miley’s voice is something else,” one person tweeted. “God damn that song was absolutely gorgeous and her voice is legitimately one of a kind,” another wrote.

“I appreciate liam hemsworth for all the bops he has inspired for miley. Their relationship makes some great music lol,” one Twitter user wrote. See more, below.

This Is Reportedly Why Liam Hemsworth Decided to File for Divorce From Miley Cyrus


The Internet has not stopped buzzing since Liam Hemsworth officially filed for divorce from Miley Cyrus, bringing their 10-year relationship to an end. In an Instagram post, Hemsworth made it clear that he wishes nothing but the best for Cyrus and wants to deal with this situation in private. But a source who spoke to Entertainment Tonight just illuminated exactly why this divorce happened.

According to the source, Hemsworth just felt like it was time for him and Cyrus to go their separate ways. “Liam’s decision to file for divorce is sad, but in the end, it was never going to work,” the source said. “They are too different. Liam never wanted to share Miley with anyone. He loves her and he is far too traditional. He finally realized he just wants to start fresh.”

The source added that Hemsworth had “come to terms that it was time to move on” and that his family had been “incredibly supportive” of his decision. “They are relieved it’s over,” the source said.

“At first, Liam wanted to just give it time but he finally felt like things were getting nasty and he didn’t want to drag it out publicly,” adds the insider. “He decided it was all too much.”

It definitely has gotten intense: In addition to people speculating over the song Cyrus released about their breakup, “Slide Away,” there have been rumors about infidelity, partying, and fighting being reasons the two of them drifted apart. The gossip has only grown since Cyrus was seen kissing her longtime friend Kaitlynn Carter, Brody Jenner’s ex, in Italy. Cyrus took to Twitter on Thursday, August 22, to shut down rumors there was cheating on her end.

“I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade,” she wrote. “I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will.”

The rumors surrounding Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth‘s divorce have been intense, but now Cyrus is taking control of the narrative.

In a lengthy Twitter thread posted Thursday, August 22, the She Is Coming singer faced the media speculation head-on⁠—particularly rumors that there was cheating in their relationship.

“I can accept that the life I’ve chosen means I must live completely open and transparent with my fans who I love, and the public, 100% of the time. What I cannot accept is being told I’m lying to cover up a crime I haven’t committed. I have nothing to hide,” Cyrus posted to Twitter.

She continued, “It is no secret that I was into partying in my teens and early 20’s. I have not only smoked, but advocated for weed, I’ve experimented with drugs, my biggest song to date is about dancing on molly and snorting lines in the bathroom. I fucked up and cheated in relationships when I was young. I lost a massive Walmart deal at 17 for ripping a bong. I got kicked off hotel Transylvania for buying Liam a penis cake for his birthday and licking it. I swung on a wrecking ball naked. There are probably more nudes of me on the internet than maybe any woman in history.”

Cyrus then added, “But the truth is, once Liam & I reconciled,I meant it, & I was committed. There are NO secrets to uncover here. I’ve learned from every experience in my life. I’m not perfect, I don’t want to be, it’s boring. I’ve grown up in front of you, but the bottom line is, I HAVE GROWN UP. I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will.”

She closed her Twitter thread by writing, “At this point I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind. I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in a long time. You can say I am a twerking, pot smoking , foul mouthed hillbilly but I am not a liar. I am proud to say, I am simply in a different place from where i was when I was a younger.”

Cyrus and Carter have been seen hanging out together in the wake of the singer’s split from her husband, Liam Hemsworth, including kissing during a trip to Italy. While all seems to be cool with Jenner, yesterday brought the news that Hemsworth has officially filed for divorce from Cyrus.

Jenner has previously spoken out to defend Carter after the photos of her kissing Cyrus went viral. “I feel the need to set the story straight. Kaitlynn and I have been best friends for 6 years, and we continue to be. We, like many others before us and many after us, grew in different directions over those same 6 years,” Jenner wrote in an Instagram post.

Hemsworth, meanwhile, has stayed mostly quiet. “Hi all. Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward,” he posted on his Instagram on August 12. “This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Liam Hemsworth Has Reportedly Filed for Divorce From Miley Cyrus


It looks like it’s the end of an era: Liam Hemsworth has officially filed for divorce from Miley Cyrus, according to TMZ and People. If the reports are true, Hemsworth cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.

According to TMZ, Cyrus apparently wanted give their relationship one last go, but Hemsworth was ready to move on. In addition to filing the legal documents, he was spotted out recently without a wedding ring. Per TMZ, there’s no date of separation on the documents yet; the space to write it in reportedly reads “TBD.”

The couple announced they were calling it quits earlier this month through Cyrus’ reps: “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a statement read. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

The gossip mill has been relentless since then, with many reports focusing on Cyrus’ recent hang-outs with Brody Jenner’s ex-wife Kaitlynn Carter. (They’ve been spotted kissing.) If One More Person Calls Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter ‘Gal Pals,’ I’m Gonna Scream


Hi, hello. It’s me, your Friendly Lesbian Media Overlord, checking in on the right way to talk about queer relationships—which, yes, apparently we still need. This week’s case: On Saturday it was announced that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are separating after less than a year of marriage. Soon after, photographs of Cyrus kissing The Hills star Kaitlynn Carter, who also recently ended her relationship with Brody Jenner, surfaced.

A source told People the women are “having fun” together while on vacation in Italy.

So okay, this may not be a long-term relationship—but that doesn’t stop me from cringing and going into a “gal pal” spiral when I see comments reducing their potential romance to two besties in need of “girl time” or a “fake” ploy to “mess with their two ex-husbands.”

Here’s what we’re not gonna do: We’re not going to say Cyrus (who has made it clear, multiple times, that she identifies as queer) “can’t be tamed,” call her a “wild child,” or conflate women who love women to feral animals. We’re not going to suggest that being queer is a rebound, a result of emotional trauma that leads to something as insane as trying on a sexual identity for size. We’re also not going to minimize queer female relationships the way we’ve historically done. (Yes, I’m available for hire in LGBTQ media sensitivity training, and I’m very expensive.)

What’s a “gal pal spiral,” you ask? Historically, headlines have dubbed women in same-sex relationships as “gal pals.” It’s reductive, as it insinuates that women who are close or openly involved sexually or romantically are just #BFFgoals. Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson recently went through the “gal pal” cycle after the two were photographed wearing matching gold bands; reports claimed the women got matching “friendship rings,” despite the fact that Delevingne and Benson confirmed their relationship with an Instagram of themselves kissing labeled #PRIDE. Even after reports surfaced that they got married in Vegas, outlets countered it was only a “friendship ceremony.” Wow, I can’t wait to have a friendship ceremony and hook up with my platonic female partner on our friendshipmoon! Goals!

Delevingne was also gal pal-ed with Michelle Rodriguez when photos of the women kissing surfaced in 2014. Ireland Baldwin once kissed her “gal pal” Angel Haze. And never forget the time Kristen Stewart kept things “low-key in a denim jacket and skin-tight jeans as she steps out with live-in gal pal Alicia Cargile.” Live. In. Gal. Pal!
