Charlotte Awbery, the Viral Subway Singer, Sang ‘Shallow’ on ‘Ellen’—And Crushed It

“Shallow”Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s Oscar-winning song from A Star Is Born—is still out here changing lives. Just last week the world became obsessed with British singer Charlotte Awbery, who went viral after she was filmed belting the song while commuting in a London subway station.

The video has been viewed more than 60 million times and even helped propel the song back into the top 40 on iTunes. She’s also racked up more than 400,000 followers on Instagram, including one Miss Ariana Grande.

Now she’s performing “Shallow” live on The Ellen DeGeneres Show—and sounding equally amazing. Awbery sat down with host Ellen DeGeneres on Wednesday, February 26, to explain what this whirlwind has been like. While some people thought the initial video must have been staged, she insists it was not. She was simply taking the tube to go meet some friends. She is, however, a professional singer who’s been doing weddings and performing in pubs and restaurants for 15 years.

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed by all of this,” she said, before revealing some advice her father gave her. “My dad always said to me, ‘Wherever you are, just sing. Never ever give up.’ And he was right.” Kevin Freshwater, who recorded the video, was also in the crowd at Ellen. He said he’d been recording people around London for two weeks when he came across Awbery. “She just blew me away,” he said. “I was just in shock.” He added, “She deserves this. I was come to tears then, watching you sing. You deserve this.”

Of course, Ellen being Ellen, she wasn’t about to let Charlotte Awbery walk out empty-handed. She gave her guest a yearlong pass for the London tube, along with £10,000. Now can we get a trio performance set up with Gaga and Cooper?

Watch the full performance and interview in the video, above.

Gigi Hadid Wore a Full Face of Drugstore Makeup to the CMAs—and Crushed It

We are always here for an unexpected Gigi Hadid sighting—like when she showed up as Kacey Musgraves‘ date at last night’s CMA Awards. We love it even more when she shows up with an impeccably gorgeous makeup look that we can’t wait to recreate for every holiday party we go to this season. Oh, and did we forget to mention that every product is available at the drugstore?

Hadid’s go-to makeup artist, Patrick Ta, was “inspired by the flashing lights of Nashville and the vibrant glam of country music” and put the focus of the look at the supermodel’s golden shimmery eyes and nude lip using Maybelline products. (Hadid is a face for the brand.)

Let’s break it down, shall we.

FACE:

To create Hadid’s glowing skin, Ta lightly contoured her cheeks with the darkest shade of Maybelline FaceStudio Master Contour V-Shape DuoStick in Deep and then followed that with a lighter shade under the eyes, in the center of the forehead, on the chin, and the bridge of the nose. “Next, I used the Maybelline FitMe Blush in Nude and applied it to the apples of her cheeks, blending into the contour for a seamless finish,” Ta said in a release. “For a subtle but impactful highlight, I applied Maybelline FaceStudio Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter in Molten Gold to the highest but flattest points of her cheekbones. I set the look using the Maybelline FaceStudio Lasting Fix Makeup Setting Spray to ensure her glam stays put all night!”

Bonus tip: Hadid’s other makeup artist, Erin Parsons, previously told Glamour that you can “add an extra layer of glow by using a powder highlighter on top of a cream. I love the Maybelline FaceStudio Master Chrome Highlighter because it’s not glittery or chunky—it just gives the ultimate glimmer.”

EYES:

Ta broke out his “favorite palette”—Maybelline Lemonade Craze Eyeshadow Palette—and applied the shade Sweet Tea with a fluffy blush and applied it to Hadid’s crease, blending out to make sure there were no hard edges. He then added the shade Sherbet across her entire eyelid using a flat brush. Fun fact: Ta even created his own line of brushes, including an eye shadow brush, specifically designed to “expertly blend shadows into the crease during application,” he told Glamour.

To tie the shades together, he also applied Sweet Tea to her lower lash line before moving on to the sharp wing which he created with Maybelline TattooStudio Sharpenable Gel Pencil Longwear Eyeliner in Deep Onyx and would certainly meet with approval from Hadid’s friend, Taylor Swift. He finished off her eyes with two coats of The Falsies Black Drama Washable Mascara.

LIPS:

“I created Gigi’s statement nude lip by lining the lips with Maybelline Color Sensational Shaping Lip Liner in Purely Nude followed by Maybelline Color Sensational The Loaded Bolds Lipstick in Nude Thrill,” Ta said. And we love how the lip is subtle, yet somehow bold, all at the same time—which perfectly balances out her shimmery eyes.

The Women of Game of Thrones Crushed the Battle of Winterfell Last Night

This post contains spoilers for the final season of Game of Thrones. Consider yourself warned.

After weeks—well, years actually—of anticipation the Battle of Winterfell is finally over and the Army of the Dead is no more. And you know who seriously crushed it on the battlefield? The women. From Brienne of Tarth to little Lady Lyanna Mormont and Arya Stark, the female characters on Game of Thrones had some truly heroic moments during the most recent episode, and fans were here for it.

Nobody needed to be saved by the “prince who was promised” and instead took matters into their own hands. (Well, Dany did need an assist from Jorah, but then she got her battle on as well.)

Lady Lyanna Mormont

RIP to this tiny hero, who went out in an iconic death scene to rival some of the show’s best. From the moment we met her in season five, the character (played by actress Bella Ramsey) has been a major fan favorite, so her loss is heartbreaking. But she never stopped fighting, even until her last breath where she killed the (literal) giant wight by stabbing him in the eye before succumbing to her injuries.

Lyanna wasn’t intended to be such a beloved character, though. “Lyanna Mormont was just supposed to be in one scene, but Bella is such an incredible actress that we kept bringing her back because we wanted more Bella,” showrunner David Benioff says in an episode extra. Ramsey tells Entertainment Weekly that she was pleasantly surprised by the love her for Lyanna. “I didn’t think it was going to be anything. I just thought that I turned up and did it. When [the fan reaction] kicked up it was mad. I didn’t expect it,” she said.

Her death brought a strong wave of reaction on social media, naturally.

Arya Stark

Oh yeah, the girl we’ve watched grow up on screen DID THAT. And by that we mean killed the Night King and saved Winterfell.

Her years of training kept her alive until that big moment when she stabbed the Night King, destroying him and his Army of the Dead instantly. It was amazing, and her family better be throwing her the largest celebration banquet Winterfell has ever seen.

Brienne of Tarth

While the newly knighted Ser Brienne may not have had a battle moment as singular as Lady Lyanna or Arya, she continued to be a key to victory on the battlefield next to the Kingslayer Jaime Lannister—taking out wights and White Walkers with incredible strength, skill, and endurance. And, lest we forget, she helped train Arya.

Daenerys Targaryen

So I definitely have some questions for Dany‘s deployment of the dragons during the Battle of Winterfell, but I must give props to the Mother of Dragons for picking up a sword to help save herself (with literal ride-or-die Jorah Mormont by her side) while Jon Snow decided to just scream in the face of a zombie dragon.

Melisandre, a.k.a. The Red Woman

Ah, Melisandre, you are a tricky one that fans love and love to hate. You killed Shireen, but revived Jon Snow—and last night, she brought her magical fire to Winterfell in aide of defeating the Night King before removing her necklace and walking out into the snow to die.

With the Night King vanquished, it would seem that Queen Cersei is next up for the ladies—and we can’t wait to watch it all go down.

Meghan Markle Wore Heels While Playing Ball With Prince Harry and Crushed It

Looks like Meghan Markle can now add “playing sports in stilettos” to the list of skills she’s picked up as a royal.

On Monday (September 24), she and Prince Harry visited Britain’s Loughborough University where they met with honorees from a program called Coach Core (which works to inspire the next generation of athletes and train them to become coaches, People reports). The couple hung out in the university gym, where they took part in a pickup game of net ball.

Dressed in a navy Oscar de la Renta blouse, black Altuzarra trousers and a pair of high-heeled boots, Markle held her own in a team drill. Somehow, she made it look effortless, despite the fact that she wasn’t wearing proper gym-class attire. After the game was over, Prince Harry adorably pulled her in for an impromptu hug.

According to People, Coach Core was started by the Royal Foundation (which is led by Prince Harry, Markle, Prince William, and Kate Middleton) after the London Olympics. The organization was recently awarded the $1.3 million National Lottery grant from Sport England and will add 10 new sites across England in the next three years.

Playing sports with the public has proven to be an important duty for this generation of royals. In the seven years since becoming a royal herself, Kate Middleton has been spotted taking part in everything from a cricket match in India to a volleyball game in East London. Like Markle, she tends to eschew sneakers for heels on such occasions.

While heels aren’t technically a wardrobe requirement for the royal women, there is one footwear rule they are expected to follow for official engagements: They must always wear closed-toe shoes. “Open-toed shoes are considered informal footwear,” etiquette expert William Hanson told Harper’s Bazaar, “and inappropriate for formal occasions.”
