Busy Philipps Just Used Grammar to Shut Down a Body-Shaming Troll

Body-shamers just never learn. There are countless examples out there of celebrities and non-celebs alike shutting down their social media harassers with excellent comebacks. And yet, one troll still had the bright idea to make fun of Busy Philipps’ body on Tuesday (August 21).

Here’s how it all went down: On Tuesday morning, the actress uploaded a photo of herself in workout gear on a trampoline for a good cause. “Today is #TheAwesomeChallenge and my workout every morning makes me feel awesome (even on the days when I’d rather stay in bed, like today) For every post using #TheAwesomeChallenge @RocketsofAwesome will donate back-to-school clothing to a @Baby2Baby child in need. Let’s do this! TAG 3 FRIENDS!” she wrote in the caption, before tagging Jen Gotch, Tess Holliday, Kelly Oxford, Sophia Bush, and Michelle Monaghan.

Rather than following instructions and doing the “Awesome Challenge,” however, one Instagram user felt the need to comment on Philipps’ body instead. “Ughhhh, you’re rolls are showing,” he wrote, as captured by the ever-vigilant @commentsbycelebs. Big mistake. Huge. The troll soon found himself on the receiving end of a scorched-earth grammar lesson, courtesy of Philipps herself.

“I feel like a man of your age should know the difference between YOUR and YOU’RE,” Philipps wrote, according to @commentsbycelebs. “YOUR is POSSESSIVE, as in ‘YOUR rolls are showing.’ (Get it? The rolls BELONG to me.) YOU’RE is an abbreviation for YOU ARE, as in YOU’RE CLEARLY AN A**HOLE BODYSHAMING LOSER. ✌️”

It goes without saying that body-shaming is never OK. But in this case, especially, this person really, really should’ve known better. Not only does Philipps have a documented history of live-outing creeps on social media, but she’s taken on body-shamers before.

“You know how when you’re a woman, sometimes people feel like they should be able to comment about your body all the time or make laws about your body?” she said on Instagram stories back in November, according to People. “Well when you’re an actress, or any female in the public eye, everyone feels that they can comment on your body all the f*cking time. Always. The amount of people in my long, 20-year career in this industry who’ve come up to me in grocery stores and Bed Bath and Beyonds to talk with people about my weight…I think it’s a good thing to err on the side of ‘Let’s not talk to people about their bodies unless they bring it up first and they want to talk about their bodies.'”

Agreed. There are better things to do…like brushing up on your grammar.

Michelle Williams Literally Sent Busy Philipps a Cardboard Cut-Out of Herself

The best thing about having a best friend is they always know just how to cheer you up. Such is the case for celebrity besties Busy Philipps and Michelle Williams, who have been by each other’s sides since their days on the timeless teen drama Dawson’s Creek. Philipps is currently recovering from surgery, and on Thursday (May 24), she took to her Instagram feed to show her followers how dedicated Williams is to keeping her company while she’s on the mend—even when she can’t physically keep her pal company.

“Guys my friend came to visit me because I had surgery,” Philipps joked in her Instagram Story before panning over to a very realistic-looking lifesize cardboard cutout of Williams wearing a flouncy floral dress and a pair of oversize sunglasses. “DEAD,” Philipps captioned the shot. In another clip, Philipps casually catches up on some work while Cardboard Michelle Williams watches over her. And in a third clip, in which Philipps can’t stop laughing, she confirms that Cardboard Michelle is so realistic she’s even the same height as the IRL Williams.

Philipps also posted a selfie of her replacement friend keeping an eye on her over her shoulder. “Michelle sent me a life size cardboard cut out of herself to keep me company while I recover and it’s so hilarious and also keeps scaring me when I come into the room, which is also kind of hilarious. Truly one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten.??????,” she captioned the shot.

Though the cutout is truly hilarious, it’s also completely in character for the duo, who are quick to be at each other’s sides when needed. “She’s been there for me, and I’ve been there for her,” Philipps said of her 15-year friendship with Williams in a recent interview with Popsugar. “And she gives the best advice and makes me feel better about things, and I hope I do the same for her.”

The pair met while playing Jen (Williams) and Audrey (Philipps) on Dawson’s Creek, and have been permanent fixtures in each other’s lives ever since. “Michelle is kind of an easy person to fall in love with, and anyone who knows her will tell you that, but we just really genuinely have a lot in common,” Philipps, who recently flew across the country to be by Williams’ side on the tenth anniversary of ex Heath Ledger’s death, told Popsugar. “At the core, we have been so close for so many years for a reason, which is the same reason why anyone is close with anyone else, because we have a very a commonality and a shared sensibility and we just love each other.”

Busy Philipps Is Getting Her Own Late-Night Talk Show, and It’s a Big Deal

The late-night talk show landscape is about to add another host to the mix—and, surprise, it’s not a man named Jimmy.

According to a press release from E!, actress Busy Philipps is developing an “innovative” late-night talk show for the network. Busy Tonight, the show’s working title, will feature comedic commentary, interviews, and segments that “go behind her most popular Instagram stories.” Philipps will also serve as an executive producer.

You’re probably at least somewhat familiar with Philipps, given how many points of entry there are to know her. You may have seen her acting work on Freaks & Geeks, Dawson’s Creek, Cougartown, or most recently, I Feel Pretty. Perhaps her hilariously real Instagram Stories drew you in. Her red-carpet appearances and awards-show shenanigans with best friend Michelle Williams have made frequent headlines, including a well-documented front-row reaction to the infamous MoonlightLaLa Land Oscar snafu. Maybe it’s all of the above. She’s carved out an interesting career path for herself—and now that includes adding late night host to her résumé.

Philipps’ natural candor and sense of humor will make her a fantastic host, but the fact that she’s even getting a shot at her own show at all is a marvel. In 2018 the world of late-night television has continued to be a pretty tight-knit boys’ club. Jimmy. Jimmy. Seth. Trevor. Stephen. James. Even the writers’ rooms on these shows have historically been predominantly male (and white).

Of course, there are some notable exceptions currently on the air with TBS’ Samantha Bee, Hulu’s Sarah Silverman, and BET’s Robin Thede. Still, that group is small enough that Bee had “Nasty” jackets made for each of them. (Add one more to the list, Sam!)

The trail for women in late-night was blazed by the OG queen Joan Rivers, who hosted The Late Show on Fox in 1986. Chelsea Handler has maintained a presence after 10:00 P.M. for years—first on E! and then later on Netflix. That said, it’s problematic that you can practically count on one hand all of the female voices who have been given this kind of platform. Frankly, it feels rooted in the tired belief that women aren’t as funny as men—something we all know to be total B.S. And if ever there was a time to have more diverse voices on the air, it’s right now. That includes more women in general, and certainly more women of color and women from the LGBTQ+ community. We need to hear their perspectives, their jokes, their interviews.

Which brings me back to Philipps: I, for one, can’t wait to see what she brings to the table. If her IG Stories are any sort of preview, I’m all in.

Busy Philipps Is So Over This Fan's Body-Shaming, Backhanded Compliment

One might think after the year we’ve been having that everyone would have learned by now that it’s absolutely not OK to offer unsolicited comments on another person’s body—especially when it comes to their weight. Unfortunately, as actress Busy Philipps experienced recently, it appears we still have a long way to go before people realize that other people’s bodies are none of their business.

Philipps took to Instagram Stories on Friday night to share an uncomfortable encounter she had with a fan while running errands at Rite Aid. A female fan recognized Philipps from her hit show Cougar Town and approached her to say hi.

“She was so sweet and had such a calming manner—and in a loveliest way, she said, ‘You’ve lost some of your plumpness from Cougar Town. You look nice still, but you’ve lost some of your plumpness,'” said Philipps, according to People.

Philipps brushed off the woman’s backhanded compliment, telling the woman she was glad she liked the show before moving on. But still, the fan’s comment bothered her. “It was a compliment,” she said. “She was very sweet when she said it. It just was an interesting choice of [words]. I don’t think I was plump.”

Philips is not alone in being body-shamed: Celebs like Lucy Hale, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Aniston, Rihanna, and Beyoncé have all been on the receiving end of similarly unsolicited comments about their body.

At one point, Philipps wondered if the woman had been watching the season of Cougar Town Philipps filmed just five weeks after giving birth to her daughter Cricket. “This is how my brain works,” she said. “I’m going to be thinking about this for the next … whatever.” Which is just so unfair: Philipps won a critics’ choice award for her acting on that show and this is what she’s going to think about when she thinks about that job?

She points out that there is a better way to handle these situations without offending the person on the receiving end of the comment. “There’s a difference between saying to someone, ‘You look amazing!’ ‘You look great,’” said Philipps. This woman didn’t do that; instead, she added an asterisk with the “but.” Which is why, Philipps points out, one should always err on the side of not saying anything at all.

“You know how when you’re a woman, sometimes people feel like they should be able to comment about your body all the time or make laws about your body?” she said. “Well when you’re an actress, or any female in the public eye, everyone feels that they can comment on your body all the f—— time. Always. The amount of people in my long, 20-year career in this industry who’ve come up to me in grocery stores and Bed Bath and Beyonds to talk with people about my weight … I think it’s a good thing to err on the side of ‘Let’s not talk to people about their bodies unless they bring it up first and they want to talk about their bodies.'”

Moral of this story? Don’t be a busybody about Busy’s body—or anyone else’s.

Busy Philipps Just Dyed Michelle Williams' Hair Pink on Instagram

PHOTO: INSTAGRAM / @BUSYPHILIPPS

Legend has it that celebrities are just like us, and watching Busy Philipps dye Michelle Williams’ hair pink, well, let’s just say we’re starting to buy into that idea a little more. On Wednesday night, the real-life best friends recorded the whole night for Instagram, and it’s impossible to look away.

The action began while the duo and a friend were staying up for a flight back to LA from Paris. After going out, they were back in a hotel room (with white wine) when the pink-haired Philipps whipped out her leave-in hair tint. “Guys, we’re going to dye her hair pink. What do you think? Is this a good idea? Look at that hair. It’s going to be pink,” Philipps explained to the camera.

Philipps says she uses the tint for 20 minutes to get her pink color, so they decided to put it into William’s platinum pixie for five minutes. The goal: “perfectly millennial pink” hair. Philipps massaged it in; Williams’ face is, in a word, incredible. In two words, incredible and relatable.

Five minutes of wine time later, and Williams’ was freshly pink.

For how it happened, the color looks great—like pink champagne (alcohol pun not intended), strawberry blond’s platinum-based sister.

In a Leslie Knope way, Philipps said what we were all thinking: “She has slightly pink hair, and it’s fucking beautiful. She’s like a little nymph asleep next to me.”
