CMT's Artists of the Year Special Will Honor Only Women for the First Time Ever

The CMT Artists of the Year special only honored male performers in 2017, which, unsurprisingly, caused some backlash online. It looks like the network heard people’s complaints, though, because this year’s honorees are exclusively women. Yes, for the first time since its inception eight years ago, the CMT Artists of the Year ceremony will tribute the current queens of country music—and only the queens.

Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Kelsea Ballerini, Maren Morris, Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman, and Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott are the seven women CMT will honor during the show—and each are more than deserving of the praise. Morris took the country and pop music world by storm this year with her crossover hit “The Middle,” featuring Zedd; Lambert spent the first half of the year killing it on tour; and Underwood publicly emerged stronger than ever with her song “Cry Pretty” after enduring a facial injury. (Her album of the same name drops this Friday, September 14.) Little Big Town also found success on tour this year, and Lady Antebellum is still riding the success of their 2017 album Heart Break. Ballerini, meanwhile, was just tapped to be a fifth coach on NBC’s hit competition series The Voice.

“In this monumental year for women, dedicating one of the biggest nights in the genre to applaud female country artists not only solidifies our commitment, but we hope will spark a much-needed change in the industry,” CMT senior VP Leslie Fram said in a statement.

All the women receiving honors this year are returnees, except Morris, who released her first album in June 2016.

The CMT Artists of the Year Awards will air live from Nashville on October 17 at 8 P.M. ET. Mark your calendars accordingly.

Think of them as the perfect white tee or bag that goes with everything: They’re workhorse staples that deserve a permanent place in your makeup bag. The best part? Of all the recommendations we got, plenty are even found at the drugstore. Here are the products makeup pros say they can’t live without.

47 Black Artists From Netflix Came Together for an Incredible Video About Representation

Netflix is one of the most diverse platforms in entertainment, with hundreds of original titles featuring people of every race, gender, sexuality, and size—both onscreen and off. The streaming giant showcased its diversity last year during a BET Awards TV spot titled “It’s About Time” and a campaign called #FirstTimeISawMe, where black and Latinx talent from Netflix revealed when they first felt represented in entertainment. This year Netflix has a new ad, which aired during the 2018 BET Awards last night, that focuses specifically on black representation.

Photographer Kwaku Alston and director Lacey Duke brought together 47 black actors and creators of Netflix original content for a shoot inspired by the iconic 1958 portrait “A Great Day in Harlem.” Several fan favorites made appearances, including Alisha Boe (13 Reasons Why), Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black), and Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things), who actually narrated the entire video.

“This is a new day,” McLaughlin says in the ad. “Built from the ground broken by legends. A day for our generation to see untold experiences of our blackness. Representing a limitless range of identity. Playing kings and queens of our neighborhoods. Defeating larger-than-life forces trying to flip our world upside down. We stand up on any stage and every screen. A day when black women are boldly the lead character, whether inmates or scholars. We’re not a genre because there’s no one way to be black. We’re writing while black. Nuanced and complex. Resilient and strong. This is not a moment. This is a movement. We are strong black leads. Today is a great day in Hollywood.”

Taylor Swift Pays Tribute to All the Female Artists Who Inspire Her at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards

Taylor Swift has been missing in action from the awards show scene in recent years, so her surprise appearance at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards was noteworthy in and of itself. And as soon as she took her seat in the front row (in between bestie Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes), it was as if she never left: Swift resumed her corny dance moves, shameless lip-synching, and award-winning habits in no time—and delivered a moving speech that honored female artists both past and present. All in a night’s work.

When Swift took the stage to accept the Billboard Music Award for Top Female Artist—her 22nd BBMA, the most in Billboard history—she used the opportunity to honor her fellow female artists rather than her own successes.

“I haven’t been to an awards show in a few years and it is so nice to be here tonight,” Swift began her acceptance speech. “And it is so nice to receive female artist. I’m on an all-female artist stadium tour right now, so I have to start out by saying thank you to my tour mates Charli XCX and Camila Cabello.” (Insert sweet bestie moment with Cabello standing, cheering, and waving for her “Reputation” tour mate.)

Swift then went on to pay tribute to the women artists of the past, present, and future, thanking them for trailblazing a path and providing inspiration for herself and countless others. “I want to thank all the artists, all the female artists who paved the way for us to get to do what we do, the way we get to do it,” she said. “All the new artists, the new female artists, who are killing it right now—we are so inspired by you. And shoutout to the future female artists who just picked up a guitar and learned how to play piano.”

Watch her speech, below:

Later in the night, after she won Top Selling Album, Taylor thanked her fans. “You guys, when I started writing songs when I was 12, I started writing songs because it made me feel more understood,” she said. “When I was making Reputation, this album, for a while there I was feeling really misunderstood by a lot of people. So I want to say to the fans, thank you for continuing to show up. We just started our tour last week and the ways that you’ve cared about me and the ways that you’ve treated me—thank you for making me feel understood again.”
