'This Is Us' Season 3: What We Know So Far

The season two finale of This Is Us left us with multiple cliff-hangers. Toby has severe depression; Kevin’s now dating Beth’s cousin, Zoe; and far into the future, Adult Tess and Old Man Randall are dreading visiting a woman whose identity isn’t known right now. It could be Beth, or Deja, or Annie, or maybe the spirit that lives inside Rebecca’s grandma wig—we have no idea. Your guess is as good as ours.

In fact, much of This Is Us‘ third season is still shrouded in secrecy. The show-runners did reveal a smidgen of what’s to come to Glamour, but there are still so many things we don’t know. Will Jack play a big role? Are Toby and Kate going to run into newlywed problems? How many times will Kevin take his shirt off? These are pressing questions we need answers to.

So, we scoured the Internet and asked the cast and crew of This Is Us to tell us everything they can about what’s to come in season three. We’ll periodically update this post when more tea comes out, but, for now, here’s what we know:

It will premiere on September 25. NBC confirmed this on June 19, 2018.

There will be 18 episodes. Season two also had 18 episodes.

Season three will be big. Fogelman told us it’s the show’s “most ambitious yet.” “We’re going for it in season three, and it’s really ambitious and really surprising,” he said.

Kevin and Zoe’s relationship is a central story. “There’s a very interesting familial dynamic there, as well as a racial dynamic that’s going to be interesting to explore,” Fogelman also explained to us at SXSW.

Rebecca and Miguel’s backstory will be fleshed out more. Co-showrunner Elizabeth Berger told TV Line the new season delves into the interesting romance between Rebecca and Jack’s best friend, including “its origins, and what Miguel and Rebecca’s life in present times is like a little bit more behind closed doors.”

We’ll also learn more about Jack. “I think season two was so much about Jack’s death obviously, and I think season three, in a really cool way, is going to be more about his life and sort of focusing on these chapters that we haven’t yet seen,” Berger revealed in the This Is Us finale after show, according to E! Online. “I think Jack has alluded to Rebecca that he has a lot of secrets and there are parts of his life that even she hasn’t been privy to, and we’re going go get to really explore those parts in a really exciting way.”

And the Present-Day Jack hypotheticals will play out more, too. We first saw this in the finale, when Kate dreamed about what Jack and Rebecca’s 40-year renewal ceremony would’ve been life if Jack were alive. This same format will continue. “Obviously a wedding is going to bring up so much for Kate especially in regards to her dad not being there, so we were sort of like how can we incorporate him into this and make him part of this day?” Berger said, also according to E! Online.

The year after Jack’s death won’t go unnoticed. “[Jack’s death] happened in February of [the Big Three’s] senior year of high school, which is a seminal time no matter what,” executive producer Isaac Aptaker and co-show runner told Glamour. “They also had this tragedy occur, which affects the rest of their lives, so we’re going to dive into that year where there’re so many stories to tell about the decisions they make[,] and the way they react to their father’s death shaped the trajectory for the next 20 years of their lives.”

Vietnam is a big part of the next season. Remember, we saw Kevin and his girlfriend, Zoe (Beth’s cousin), fly there at the end of the finale for unknown reasons, and this is where Jack served time in the military. “[Season two is] big Vietnam season for us. We’re doing some cool stuff. Milo will get a real showcase as younger Jack and there will be more Jack and Rebecca origin stories,” show creator Dan Fogelman said at SXSW, per Deadline.

Beth and Randall will run into more relationship problems. “There will be a bit of an exploration of marriage with regards to Randall and Beth going through times that aren’t all sunshine and rainbows,” Sterling K. Brown told People. “That’s not to say that they are in danger of parting ways, but marriage is real and takes work.”

We’ll get to meet Déjà’s father, too. “Obviously, Déjà has had almost no relationship with him, but she may know more about him than we previously let on,” Berger told Entertainment Weekly. “So, we’ll get to know a little bit more about what that relationship is moving forward.”

We don’t know who Adult Tess and Old Man Randall are talking to in that flash-forward,. “It’s safe to say they’re talking about someone extremely close to them, but I don’t think [the audience] is meant to think any particular person is dead or alive or ill,” Fogelman told us at SXSW. Hopefully this puts all those “Beth is dead” rumors to rest. “There’s a lot of possibilities of what Randall and Tess are talking about,” he added. “I think by the end of next season, you’ll have a general consensus where it’s going.”

Speaking of which, there are no deaths planned for the third season as of now. “We don’t have any other deaths coming in a present day storyline anytime soon,” Fogelman also told us. Thank God.

Randall and Kevin will get more screen time together. Looks like their little road trip from the season finale paid off. “There is something about the two brothers together, you see a lot of it in the finale, there is something so real about them as brothers,” Fogelman said at SXSW, according to People. “So I go ‘Sh*t, we need to get Randall and Kevin on camera more.’”

Kevin will most likely remain sober. “He seems to be headed in the right direction,” Hartley said at SXSW. “It’s part of who he is, and stuff doesn’t go away, but it’s about managing and figuring it out. He’s got a great support system.”

We’ll learn more about Toby, as well. Including why his brother didn’t attend his wedding. We also saw in a flash-forward that Toby’s suffering from severe depression, so that will be addressed as well.

More characters will receive backstories, too. “Chris Sullivan, and we’re going to be going into [Toby’s] backstory and we’re really excited about it,” Berger told Glamour at the TCAs in August 2018. “We’re going to be going into Susan’s (Beth’s) backstory for the first time, which we’re really excited about. It’s the pitfall of having such a brilliant cast is you’re always, ‘give them more, give them more!’”

They’re changing up episode structures. “A typical episode of This Is Us has three sibling storylines and then a past episode, and every now and then we’ll devote one [episode] solely to one character, but this season we’re really throwing everything out the window and saying all bets are off, so maybe we’ll do an episode where every act is a different time. Maybe we’ll have something that jumps five timelines in an episode. We’re just really pushing the limits of what people can comprehend,” Isaac Aptaker, a writer on This Is Us, told Glamour.

We’ll learn about Toby’s depression quickly. “Sort of within the first half of our season, we’re going to be seeing Kate and Toby go through various challenge,” Berger said. “Obviously last season we showed their journey to have a family…that’s a journey that we’re going to be continuing this season and there’s going to be the stresses of your first year of marriage. It’s something we’re going to be building towards.”

And we’ll learn why Deja acted out in the finale. “The immediate question for Beth and Randall is what do you do with this foster child who you’ve fallen in love with deeply who does something like, pretty frightening like that? (She smashed the windshield of Randall’s car with a baseball bat at Kate/Toby’s wedding),” Berger said. “And that’s one of the immediate things we’re picking up with in season three. [We’ll explore why she did it], absolutely.”

One thing you won’t see: Toby and Kate’s honeymoon. “I was really trying to [push for a honeymoon]! Like, can’t we go on a little trip?” Chrissy Metz tells us. “It’s alluded to that we went on one.”

The Trailer for the 'This Is Us' Creator's New Movie Is Already Making Us Sob

Heads up to all you This Is Us fans: The show’s creator, Dan Fogelman, has a new movie coming out, and it’s giving us major This Is Us vibes. The film, called Life Itself, is shaping up to be an alternately heartwarming and heartbreaking multi-generational family drama that jumps across timelines and skylines—and obviously, makes you ugly cry.

The trailer, which Amazon Studios dropped on Tuesday, opens with Oscar Isaac’s character declaring his love for Olivia Wilde’s character. “I’ve been waiting for the right moment, because when I ask you out, there’s not gonna be any turning back for me,” he says. “I’m not gonna date anybody else for the rest of my life. I’m not gonna love anybody else for the rest of my life. I’m waiting for the right moment, because when I ask you out, it’s gonna be the most important moment of my life. And I just want to make sure that I get it right.”

The rest of the trailer is basically a montage of tear-jerking/life-affirming moments. At one point, Isaac’s character proposes to Wilde’s character at a costume party (less than a year after they start dating), and in the ensuing very emotional scene, she says, “I love you, but I may not be equipped to be loved this much.” I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Amazon appears to be keeping any concrete details about the plot of the movie under wraps for now, but the IMDb page describes it like this: “As a young New York couple goes from college romance to marriage and the birth of their first child, the unexpected twists of their journey create reverberations that echo over continents and through lifetimes in Life Itself.” The ensemble cast also includes Antonio Banderas, Olivia Cooke, Annette Bening, and Mandy Patinkin.

'This Is Us' Just Announced the Premiere Date for Season 3

Warning: This Is Us spoilers ahead.

It seems like just yesterday fans of This Is Us were crushed by the truth about Jack Pearson’s death, but show-runner Dan Fogelman already has us emotionally preparing for season three.

On Tuesday (June 19), NBC confirmed—via Instagram—that season three will premiere on September 25, 2018 at 9:00 P.M. ET. The video, shared to the This Is Us‘ account, shows a calendar with both Jack and the Big Three’s (Randall, Kate, and Kevin) birthdays marked down on August 31 and September 1, respectively. “There’s no you. There’s no me. There’s just US,” reads the caption, just in case the handwritten hearts and birthday cake didn’t make you weepy enough.

If you watched the season 2 finale, you know that the last five minutes confused fans with a flash-forward in time. Here’s a quick update: Toby is bedridden with depression; Kevin is dating Beth’s cousin, Zoe; and Randall and an older Tess have to go visit someone they have not seen in a long time. Though many fans quickly spiraled with the last scenario, believing that Beth was in danger of dying, Fogelman himself confirmed to Glamour that this is not the case. “We don’t have any other deaths coming in a present day storyline anytime soon,” he said. (Bless.) Fogelman revealed little else about the upcoming episodes, but he did say the new season will be the “most ambitious yet.”

Season three will feature 18 episodes and explore the immediate after-effects of Jack’s death, Miguel and Rebecca’s backstory, and Jack’s young life. Note to self: Buy tissues before September.

Justin Hartley: 'This Is Us' Changed Me As a Father

Before I was cast on This Is Us, I was at a point in my career where I had done pilot after pilot after pilot, pouring my heart and soul into shows that just weren’t working. You find yourself not knowing where you’re going to work geographically, whether it’s New York or Toronto or Vancouver, or wherever. I have a daughter, and I wasn’t getting any younger, so I thought, I want a job at home in L.A. that I’m proud of and can see my daughter every single day and be happy.

Then a fellow actor friend of mine sent me the script for This Is Us and said, “Dan Fogleman just wrote you in a pilot.” I remember reading the part of Kevin and thinking, “Oh my God, he thinks that’s who I am?” Kevin’s in a spot where he’s being perceived in a certain way by the people around him, but it’s the opposite of the way he sees himself. I was going through a bit of that as well. My friend didn’t mean to hurt my feelings by comparing me to Kevin, but it did hit home for me. I saw Kevin as a guy surrounded by people who tell him how great he is, yet he feels completely alone. Kevin and I are different, but we’ve both gone through pain and suffering. Everyone’s had pain.

This season, the Pearson kids lose their father at that age when they need him. How do you make up for that absence? In a weird way, This Is Us makes you want to stay alive as long as you can. Life is delicate. My daughter is 13—so, I slow everything down. We took a flight recently, and I had a conversation with her that I thought was really important. I said, “I just want you to know some things…indulge me for five minutes.” We just had a really nice, slow conversation. It wasn’t any new information, just things I thought she should know.

In a weird way, This Is Us makes you want to stay alive as long as you can.

When she saw Kevin really suffering this season, she would call me after those heavy episodes if we weren’t together. Two scenes that come to mind are when Kevin was on the football field crying and at Jack’s tree, when Kevin’s talking to his dad. She wanted to hear my voice and make sure everything was OK. She said, “That didn’t look like acting.” It was a lot for her, and I wasn’t even sure she should watch that. It made her think, like it would for anyone, what would you do it you lost your mom or your dad? At a young age, it’s not supposed to happen that way. So, she checks in and wants to hear my voice and make sure I’m not crying and OK.

I get it, because I’ve been affected by things that Kevin has done. I get lost in the moments. When I did that scene with Milo—[Ed note: When Kevin hallucinates thinking Jack is on stage giving him an award]—I think of my daughter. I think about how much I’ve taught her and what a sliver it has been so far. I think of all the things I want to teach her and see her go through. I want to walk her down the aisle. I want to be there when her kids are born. I want to call her when her boyfriend breaks up with her, or talk her through a breakup. I want to teach her how to drive. All this stuff. I want to take her to college and make sure she knows everything is OK and I’m only a phone call away. I want to pick her up from college and bring her home. I want to be there at the airport.

Can you imagine missing all of that? So, for me, that’s what I was tapping into when I was doing those scenes with Milo as Jack. To imagine Kevin being in a place where if he can experience just one more embrace…you just want one more little moment.

I try to make sure my daughter has a great relationship with her grandparents, her stepmom, her mom, and her friends. I’m trying to give her every single thing that I never had—and I had a good childhood. I just want to make sure she has all those things and keeps her feet on the ground.

I love my own dad very much; he’s a fair man, but he’s a hard man. I think he does the opposite sometimes of what I do with my daughter. I will praise, praise, praise her, and he’s old school. He comes from that old school generation where it’s like, I’ll let you know when something’s wrong and maybe pat you on the back every once in a while. You know when you’re doing good. I don’t need to tell you. I can tell that he’s proud, and he’s said as much. But up until this role, I don’t think he’s seen me do anything like this. I can tell that he’s a little bit shocked. So the fact that he thinks This Is Us is the best show on television…to me, that’s really cool.

PHOTO: Disney Parks

I pull from both of my parents and try to be as loving as I can with my daughter, but also understand we’re not always going to be best friends. I don’t remember the last time I got upset with her. It’s hard to get upset when they do so many things right. I want her to enjoy her life, but also make the right decisions. There are things I could circumvent to make sure she doesn’t go down the wrong path, but you have to make mistakes too. I don’t know how to be a kid anymore, so I’m kind of learning from her as well. They have it tough. There’s a lot going on with social media. Everything has changed. But it’s a team effort. Hopefully, I help her be a better kid. That’s my job.

I’ve always been a really sensitive guy, but I hope This Is Us slowed me down a little bit. I try not to focus on the things that are out of my control, which is most things. I certainly don’t worry about things the way I used to. It’s nice to be part of something that proves what you thought you could do for years, and then you finally get a chance to do it. To be given the opportunity to do something and go, “This is what I’ve been telling people forever that I can do”…well, that’s awesome. And now I better do it.

New 'This Is Us' Photos Confirm Something Big About the Super Bowl Episode

The next episode of This Is Us isn’t airing until after the Super Bowl, but don’t worry: It’ll be worth the wait. Based on NBC’s hyperbolic promos instructing us to set our DVRs for “extra time,” it seems like this is going to be the episode: the one where all our questions are answered, including how Jack died. Cue that GIF of Rose from Titanic saying, “It’s been 84 years”—because it feels like that’s how long we’ve been waiting for this moment.

Granted, we did receive a tease with last week’s episode. The final five minutes revealed the cause of the fire that presumably killed Jack (spoiler: it was a Crock Pot—long story), but there’s still so much we don’t know. Why couldn’t Jack get out of the house in time? Did Kevin ever come home? Is Kate’s dog actually to blame for all of this?

Unfortunately, the photos NBC just released of the Super Bowl episode don’t answer these questions, but they do reveal something important: The episode doesn’t take place entirely on the night of the fire. In fact, these photos suggest the bulk of the episode happens in the preset-day, which is both confusing and intriguing. Is This Is Us going to wrap up the entire fire mystery in five minutes and then spend 37 on the Pearson’s Super Bowl shenanigans? Is what Beth and Randall cook on Game Day more important than Jack dying?

Peep the pictures for yourself, below, to get a taste of what’s to come. They’re pretty standard—but it’ll only be a matter of time before fans start with the theories.

Again, be sure to tune into the episode directly after the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 4. Try to save some wine for the occasion (like, an entire bottle). You’ll need it.

Crock Pot Is Beefing With 'This Is Us' Over Its Last Episode

Spoilers ahead: If you haven’t watched the most recent episode of This Is Us, stop reading here.

This Is Us, a show that tries to pass Mandy Moore off as a 65-year-old woman, achieved new levels of bonkers this week when it revealed that a Crock Pot—as in the device your grandmother uses to make stew—had a “faulty switch” that caused the Pearson House Fire that presumably killed Jack.

What kind of demonic-ass Crock Pot has enough manpower to engulf a two-story house in flames? Was this Crock Pot possessed by a ghost who hated the Super Bowl chili Rebecca (probably) made that day? Was this its way of promoting the vegetarian lifestyle?

Either way, This Is Us fans were shook and bombarded Twitter with anti-Crock Pot propaganda—because a TV show that gave Sylvester Stallone a multi-episode arc for no reason is the perfect source for safe cooking information. The outrage was so bad that This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman felt the need to post this “in defense of Crock Pots” tweet:

The anger is persisting, though, and now Crock Pot’s PR team is getting involved. Earlier this week, the company responded to comments on its Facebook page from people preparing to take metal bats to their Crock Pots. Below, just two of the company’s responses:

PHOTO: Facebook

But even this wasn’t enough to ease the ire of Texas chili con carne-loving This Is Us fans. The company gave a laughably long statement to TV Line in response to This Is Us‘ accidental smear campaign. Check it out, below:

“Crock-Pot understands the concerns brought up by last night’s episode of This Is Us, and we too are heartbroken by the latest development in Jack’s storyline. However, it is important that our consumers understand and have confidence that all Crock-Pot slow cookers exceed all internal testing protocols and all applicable industry safety standards and regulations as verified by independent third-party testing labs. For nearly 50 years, with over 100 million Crock-Pots sold, we have never received any consumer complaints similar to the fictional events portrayed in last night’s episode. In fact, the safety and design of our product renders this type of event nearly impossible.

In addition, and most relevant to the concerns consumers are having after watching the recent This Is Us episode, our Crock-Pot slow cookers are low current, low wattage (typically no more than 200 or 300 watts) appliances with self-regulating, heating elements. The product is designed to cook foods over a longer period of time at low temperatures and the switches connect to only 1 side of the power line voltage, so there is never a high voltage applied directly across our switches. The switches within our slow cookers are subjected to additional internal testing, which includes a Rotary Knob Endurance test, Rotary Knob Force Test and Flame Burning Test and constructed of self-extinguishing, flame resistant material.

Our hope is that the team at NBC’s This Is Us will help us spread factual information regarding our product’s safety. While we know their primary mission is to entertain – something they have continued to excel in – we also feel they have a responsibility to inform. Just like many fans, we will be watching next week’s episode to see how Jack’s story progresses and, regardless of the outcome, we want consumers first and foremost to know they are safe when using their Crock-Pot.”

Do you hear that? That’s the sound of 2,000 Crock Pot employees throwing on ABC-sponsored armor and fighting for their reputation. Do it for the roast chicken, guys!
