Taylor Swift Performs "New Year's Day" on 'The Tonight Show'


Taylor Swift‘s ultra-confessional song lyrics have a way of cutting right to your core (if you’ve never teared up while listening to “All Too Well,” you’re an emotionless automaton). “New Year’s Day,” the final song on her new album Reputation, is no different. Swift showed up at The Tonight Show on Monday night for a special performance of the song in honor of host Jimmy Fallon‘s first episode back after his mother’s death—and ended up bringing Fallon to tears with her uncannily spot-on lyrics.

The pop star gave a low-key performance of the quietest song on her album while wearing a sparkly silver sweatshirt and black pants. Accompanying herself on the piano, and backed only by a handful of vocalists shrouded in darkness at the back of the stage, Swift sang her sweet ode to a partner who hangs out with you at the New Year’s Eve party and stays to help you clean up the next morning. As soon as she played the last note—and gave the audience a small smile—Swift jumped off the piano bench and headed across the stage to give a teary-eyed Fallon a huge hug.

Earlier in the show, Fallon had paid a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, during which he explained how, throughout his life, he and his mom would squeeze each other’s hands three times while saying “I love you.” Through tears, Jimmy spoke about their tradition in his opening monologue: “Last week I was in the hospital, and I grabbed her hand and I squeezed, ‘I love you.’ I just knew we were in trouble.”

In a Twitter thread posted after the episode aired, Tonight Show writer Mike DiCenzo explained why Fallon had such an emotional connection to the song. “He hadn’t told any of us that story,” DiCenzo wrote, before noting that although Swift wasn’t scheduled to perform on Monday’s show, she agreed with “zero hesitation” when they called her at the last minute.

“She sang ‘New Year’s Day.’ No one had heard it,” he tweeted. “Suddenly she sings the line, ‘Squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi.’ I nearly gasped. Tears. I think everyone in the audience started sobbing.”

DiCenzo continued: “I could see Jimmy silhouetted at his desk dabbing his eyes with a tissue. We all lost it. It was a beautiful coincidence in a beautiful performance. ‘Hold on to your memories, they will hold on to you,’ Taylor sang.”

“That hug between Jimmy and Taylor after the song was 100 percent real emotion,” he added. “Whatever you think of Taylor, she did something beautiful for Jimmy and our show today, and we’re forever grateful.”

'The Mindy Project' Is Auctioning off Some of Mindy's Best Costumes


Alas, The Mindy Project is coming to an end on Tuesday, but there’s one bright spot in the unyielding bleakness brought about by its finale: Mindy Lahiri’s incredible, colorful costumes and accessories are headed to auction. You read that right—and if you’ve spent the past six seasons lusting after Mindy’s wardrobe as much as you’ve followed the plot, you’re going to want in on this. There’s just one catch: You gotta act fact. Really fast.

On Monday, Hulu announced that it partnered with Universal Television and ScreenBid to auction off 45 items from the show, including costumes worn by star and producer Mindy Kaling. (If you’re not obsessing over the clothes, you should also known that they’re also auctioning off a few props.)

The auction includes the Dolce & Gabbana lemon print dress worn by Kaling in the “Princeton Charming” episode from season four, which comes with a matching yellow cardigan and Christian Louboutin white-and-tan pumps.

Or, you could try and bid on the Hervé Léger hot pink bandage dress Kaling wore in the iconic “My Cool Christian Boyfriend” episode, way back in season one. (The show is also auctioning off the very same dress in black for all your holiday LBD needs, real or conveniently invented for this occasion.)

There’s also the double-breasted magenta dress with rhinestone buttons that was made specifically by costume designer Salvador Perez for Mindy to wear when she lunched with Chris’ mom in season three’s “Annette Castellano Is My Nemesis.” Less lunch-with-the-boyfriend’s-mom is a very cozy Wildfox star knit sweater that was worn at the end of the show’s very first episode.

Other insanely wearable Mindy outfits from the show that are up for auction include a Mono B horse print sleeveless blouse, which comes with a black and white plaid Free People skirt and a yellow I Look cardigan; a black Wildfox No. 9 sequin knit sweater with black Plush heart print leggings.

There’s also a great weekend outfit in there: the AG purple scoop neck T-shirt, bebe red leatherette moto jacket, a fringed suede purse, and Ralph Lauren suede brown booties that Mindy wore to a music festival when she was dating DJ Sacrament back in season two. Bidding on that one is currently at $50, so don’t think this incredible sale is going to break the bank.

Bids right now range from $50 to $500, and according to the Los Angeles Times, 10 of the auction’s items will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network—so we’re pretty sure any potential splurges are justifiable. The auction will kick off on Monday at 9 P.M. PST and close on November 27.

'The Big Bang Theory' Season 11 Episode 7 Recap: Penny Shuts Down Sheldon's Slut Shaming Comment


A quick recap of tonight’s Big Bang Theory episode would go something like this: Sheldon and Bert collaborated on a Geology project, but Sheldon didn’t want anyone to know; Raj went on a date with Bernadette’s co-worker, Ruchi, and later hooked up with her; and, sadly, Amy and Bernadette didn’t have much to do.

But perhaps the best—and potentially most over-looked—part of “The Geology Methodology” was the continuation of #JusticeforPenny (that’s right, Stranger Things 2 isn’t the only show that gets the justice hashtag).

Last week, Penny got revenge for years of blonde dumb jokes by effortlessly taking care of baby Halley, resulting in Halley saying her first word—”mama”—to Penny. The week before, Penny pulled off the near impossible by learning how to expertly handle an immature Sheldon.

And tonight, Penny continued her ascent as the season’s best character by masterfully putting Sheldon in his place after he attempted to slut-shame her. It all started with Sheldon coming to Penny for work advice, saying he’ll ruin his reputation if anyone finds out he’s working on a Geology project. Penny gives her opinion, but Sheldon can’t make up his mind whether or not to take it, which prompts the following exchange:

Penny: This is about science. Why’d you come to me?

Sheldon: Because it’s also about reputation. And somehow, you managed to hold your head high despite your checkered past.

Penny: Checkered past?

Sheldon: It’s a figure of speech referring to how sexually promiscuous you were.

Penny: Really?! Well I’ve got a figure of speech about how sexually promiscuous you can go be with yourself.

Sheldon being Sheldon, he had no idea what that was in reference to. For the rest of us, it was a great response to a ridiculous remark. For one, having casual—and hopefully safe—sex is nothing to be ashamed about. And two, it’s none of Sheldon’s business what Penny does in private. What’s even more ironic is that at the same time Sheldon is slut-shaming Penny, in another scene Bernadette and Howard are pushing Raj to have casual sex with Ruchi. Once again, the narrative is that it’s OK for a guy to have casual sex—but, according to Sheldon, a woman has a “checkered past” if she conducts her life in the same manner. SMH.

Later in the episode, Raj pays a visit to Penny’s therapy corner kitchen (I mean, she should start charging a fee at this point) and asks for advice with Ruchi. When Raj tries to convince Penny that he can handle a casual relationship, and Penny serves up the honest truth in the form of facial expressions and jumbled laughs, Raj wants to know why she keeps “doing that with your face?” Her response: “Because you keep saying stupid things with yours!”

Clearly, Penny is not here for anyone’s stupidity. The only crime is that her role in this episode was to service Raj and Sheldon’s story, and not her own. Hopefully, we’ll see more #JusticeForPenny as this season of The Big Bang Theory continues.

'The Big Bang Theory' Season 11 Episode 6 Recap: Finally, Justice for Penny


Tonight’s episode of The Big Bang Theory got off to a rather odd and uncomfortable start: Howard went in for a vasectomy, Sheldon unintentionally referred to wanting to “touch as many children as possible” as the host of a kid’s science show, and Amy was shot down (by Sheldon, ugh) for suggesting the new search for Professor Proton be a female candidate. Yeah, things weren’t off to the greatest of starts in “The Proton Regeneration.” But, as with most classic episodes of The Big Bang Theory, the best moments happen when the characters are faced with real-life issues that challenge the very essence of who they are. It’s not always the most emotional or ground-breaking scenes, but the most truthful.

In tonight’s episode, Howard spent the bulk of it recovering from his surgery. Meanwhile, Bernadette—who was told she was pushing herself too much at her 16-week checkup—was put on bed rest. Ever since Bernadette’s first pregnancy was announced, I’ve been holding out hope for a Sheldon/Halley babysitting scene, but the show actually gave us one better: Penny as the caretaker.

This new development happened by chance: Penny stops by the Wolowitz household to check in on Bernadette and Howard, thinking Raj is already there taking care of baby Halley. But he had to go to work, so Bernadette and Howard are left to do what they can—which isn’t much. When Halley starts crying, Penny offers to go in and check on her, but in what’s possibly the biggest insult since, well, Sheldon’s comments minutes earlier, Bernadette and Howard suggest Stuart might be a better option than Penny.

Now, I get that this is a sitcom, but the fact that this show still plays into the dumb-blonde stereotype with Penny is 10 seasons too late. As we saw last week, if she can handle and manipulate Sheldon, she’s probably the wisest one of the whole group. She’s also not the same character we first met in 2007. She’s a successful pharmaceutical rep, happily married, and an amazing friend to everyone else in their time of need.

When Penny questions why Bernadette and Howard don’t trust her, they hem and haw until Bernadette says, “It’s not that we don’t trust you…you’re just not much of a baby person.” Um, Bernadette wasn’t much of a baby person until she had one of her own either. Sure, Penny might joke that she gave Halley some of her bourbon or that she’ll light some incense if Halley poops, but having the entire gang send Amy over to check in on Penny’s care-taking skills was complete overkill. (I’ll admit, though, that the scene was pretty funny, as with anytime the ladies are together.)

That’s why what happened at the end of the episode was pure gold: Bernadette and Howard ring the bell to summon Penny, and she chastises them for sending over a spy (Amy) to check in on her. They don’t do a very good job convincing Penny they didn’t mean it negatively, so when Penny leaves the room to check in on a crying Halley, Bernadette feels bad for how she’s treated her friend. Seconds later, Bernadette and Howard feel even more guilty when they overhear Penny on the monitor telling Halley that she’ll never let anything happen to her because she loves her so much. With that, Halley utters her very first word, and it’s directed at Penny: “Mama.”

“You hear that suckers? She called me mama!'” Penny gloats. While it may not undo years of outdated stereotypes and assumptions thrown at Penny, it was definitely a start. Justice for Penny! Keep it coming.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth Wear Matching Rings While on Vacation Where They Filmed 'The Last Song'


Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are sparking even more rumors that they’ve finally gotten married. Hemsworth is currently filming Killerman on none other than Tybee Island, an island off the coast of Savannah, Georgia, where the two met and fell in love in 2010 on the set of The Last Song. And recently Cyrus showed up on set, prompting fans to speculate that the pair would re-create their iconic kiss scene (which was also their first ever kiss). While we’ve yet to see that happen, the two have been showing a lot of love on the beach.

On Saturday Cyrus and Hemsworth were spotted jet-skiing and taking adorable pictures together, InStyle reports, noting they were wearing some accessories on those fingers. Cyrus paired the engagement ring that Hemsworth first gave to her in 2012 (which she began wearing again after the couple reconnected in 2016) with a sparkling band, which could be a wedding band. Hemsworth was also spotted wearing a silver band on his left finger.

Wearing matching rings in the place that they first met? Coincidence or wedding bells? It’s hard to say, but this isn’t even the first time fans were convinced the two tied the knot.

In March Billy Ray Cyrus sent the Internet into a frenzy when he posted a picture of a blissful-looking Cyrus wearing a white dress with the caption, “I’m so happy…you are happy.” Since then, everyone including Billy Ray, Mama Tish, Noah Cyrus, and even Cyrus herself have stated in multiple interviews that the two are just happy living their lives in Malibu as an engaged couple. Just last month Cyrus said, “I don’t envision marriage. I’m 24. I hope to get to live a little bit more. I have too much living to do.” Despite all the talk, this isn’t the first time that Hemsworth wore a band on his left ring finger; the actor was seen wearing a similar-looking one in August.

Whether the rings are, in fact, wedding bands or just new bling, it seems like Cyrus and Hemsworth are happy now that they are back together. And the rest of us can just rewatch The Last Song to our hearts content.

Adam Sandler Won't Stop Touching the Leg of 'The Crown' Actress Claire Foy


You would think that as powerful and creepy men have fallen over the course of the past year—experiencing retribution, if not legally, at least in reputation and career—that dudes would kind of sit up and realize that groping women and/or otherwise not waiting for an invitation to insert themselves into a woman’s personal space isn’t a good idea. In recent weeks in particular, there’s been a lot of fallout around former producer Harvey Weinstein as dozens of women have accused him of sexual assault and harassment. There’s also been hundreds of women coming out against director James Toback with similar allegations.

Let’s revisit the general gist of it all, in case it wasn’t clear: Don’t touch us without our consent.

Apparently Adam Sandler hasn’t gotten the message. On a Friday appearance on the U.K.’s Graham Norton Show, he kept nonchalantly—even obliviously—putting his hand on the thigh of The Crown star Claire Foy. She looks incredibly uncomfortable as the audience laughed (we’d like to think in sympathy with her plight) and removes his hand not once, but twice, putting it firmly back on his own leg.

The two other actresses on the show sitting near Sandler, Emma Thompson and Cara Delevingne—who both came for Weinstein hard as allegations broke out—look at him with something close to disdain. Sandler later went on to touch Thompson’s leg, too.

We all know Sandler’s sense of humor isn’t exactly high-brow: he’s known for physical comedy and early ’90s “bro” humor that veers towards immaturity. But the 51-year-old treating a talented, 33-year-old actress as a casual landing pad for his hand is, at the very least, in incredibly poor taste, especially given the near-constant headlines surrounding sexual harassment and assault in the past weeks. Would Sandler, who is married to a woman, have done the same with male colleagues?

Many women are feeling especially sensitive and vulnerable about matters like this—for some, each new headline is a reminder of their own experiences—and tone-deaf actions like this are incredibly inappropriate.

A spokesperson for the actor said on Sunday that the resulting backlash was “blown out of proportion”—but that’s a response that polices the reaction of women are affected by what they saw. And it’s not OK for the male actor (literally, in this case) to dictate what their response should be.

Twitter wasn’t happy, either, remarking that Foy looked distressed:

On her end, Foy apparently brushed off the brush: a spokeswoman for her repeatedly told the Daily Mail, “We don’t believe anything was intended by Adam’s gesture and it has caused no offense to Claire.”

We’re glad she’s OK, but still, it’s an out-of-touch (no pun intended) gesture from Sandler—and the backlash is an indication that more and more people are less willing to put up with moves like that. Invading a woman’s personal space might have been the punchline of jokes 50, even 30 and 10 years ago, but now, in 2017, times have changed—and it’s time that men, even those who have made a career out of juvenile humor, grow up.
