'The Handmaid's Tale' Season Two Looks Straight-Up Horrifying

When Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale first premiered, in the shadow of Donald Trump’s election, the show felt unsettlingly prescient. For many it felt like a well-timed answer to an administration determined to police women’s bodies. But now, as the Time’s Up reckoning sweeps every industry and all corners of the world, The Handmaid’s Tale is no longer just a prestige television series; it’s absolutely necessary and important viewing, for everyone. If we don’t want our future to look like the Republic of Gilead—and I promise you, we do not—we must create change now.

The first look at season two, which premieres in April, might inspire you. Hulu just released three photos that offer a glimpse of what’s to come, and it’s…well, it’s scary. First up is this bloody nightmare vision of Offred, played by Elisabeth Moss.

PHOTO: Take Five

The next two photos are less gory, but just as impactful:

Although these photos don’t give much away, Hulu said in a press release that season two will be shaped by Offred’s pregnancy and “her ongoing fight to free her future child from the dystopian horrors of Gilead.” So, status quo. Beyond that, we don’t know too much—season one was adapted from Margaret Atwood’s novel, but season two will enter new territory. (Atwood, however, will serve as a consulting producer to give input on the story.)

There is one clue, though: Showrunner Bruce Miller told Entertainment Weekly that the series will at some point show a handmaid’s funeral, which you can see in the photo directly above. “Everything from the design of their costumes to the way they look is so chilling,” he says of the moment. “These scenes that are so beautiful, while set in such a terrible place, provide the kind of contrast that makes me happy.”

'The Big Bang Theory' Season 11 Episode 13 Recap: As Usual, Penny Has the Most Common Sense

We’re now halfway through the season 11 of The Big Bang Theory and one thing has become clear: Thank God for Penny. Seriously. Even in episodes in which nothing really happens—like tonight’s, for example—she’s the best part. It’s why I still stand by my theory earlier this season that The Big Bang Theory will end with the reveal that Penny is a world-renowned psychologist and the past 200-plus episodes were all a dream.

If you watched tonight’s episode, it all makes sense, right? Sheldon found Penny to be a surprising source of scientific inspiration during a lull in his career, to the shock of pretty much everyone but Penny. (And FYI, she came to the rescue of the men once again. Just saying.) No offense to Young Sheldon, but I’d love to see a spin-off of Young Penny next.

In fact, I had plenty of thoughts during tonight’s episode, which is why I decided it was time to make a list. Here, five things that struck me during “The Solo Oscillation.”

1. Even though Raj and Howard are friends again, I’m thrilled the writers decided Raj should still wear his hair naturally curly. If you remember, Raj revealed that he straightened his hair all these years because Howard did, and he wanted to fit in when he came to the United States. By not going back to the hair straightener, Raj continues to establish his self-worth and own who he is.

2. I care more about young Sheldon than I do about adult Sheldon. Season 11 Sheldon is more of an annoying child than Iain Armitage’s young Sheldon will ever be. In tonight’s episode, adult Sheldon admits that he berated Leonard to conceal the fact that he’s not working on anything at the moment. And as anyone who has watched every episode of this season knows, it’s like the 100th time Sheldon has insulted, crossed, or acted immaturely toward someone he loves. Enough. (Unless you’re Amy, who doesn’t seem to mind.)

3. Are we ever going to revisit a potential romance between Sheldon’s mom and Leonard’s dad? Every time I see Laurie Metcalf on screen as Mary, I wonder if we’ll ever revisit that potential romance between Mary and Alfred during Penny and Leonard’s wedding. After all, it’s not like Judd Hirsch isn’t still in the CBS family…he stars on the network’s Superior Donuts. So where’s the cameo?

4. This show makes me hungrier than any food commercial on TV. Case in point: I’ve been battling a sore throat and don’t have much of an appetite, but the minute Penny and Sheldon started eating pizza together tonight, I’m ready to order Domino’s, Pizza Hut, and every local chain within a five mile radius. Same with Chinese food every time the group breaks out the chopsticks and plastic plates.

5. Amy needs to have a long, hard look at her relationship. Nothing new here, but the Amy from previous seasons would totally not stand for Sheldon’s antics now that they’re engaged. When she asks Leonard if marriage feels different and he replies not really, she acts relieved since “Sheldon and I are in a really great place right now, and I don’t want anything to mess that up.” I’m sorry, but “a really great place?” Leonard reminds her that the reason she’s not with Sheldon right now is because he kicked her out of the apartment to be alone. As I was saying…

'The Bachelor' Season 22 Episode 2 Recap: Becca K. Gets the Best Date in Bachelor History

Before we begin our recap of tonight’s The Bachelor episode, I ask for your patience if my thoughts seem scattered. You see, I just learned that Hot Peter will not be joining The Bachelor Winter Games—even though Mike Fleiss promised he would—and I’m still shook. I’ll rise above it, but barely.

But let’s move on (and consider this your spoiler warning): The episode starts with Arie rolling up to the mansion on a motorcycle while the girls sit around and chat about how attracted they are to him. Excellent performances, all—I consider your lack of Golden Globes to be a snub. Chris Harrison shows up and tells the women, “The hope is that just one of you will become Arie’s wife.” The way he pauses, it makes me wonder…is there a chance…that…multiple women could become Arie’s wives? I certainly hope not, but with this show you never really know.

Becca K. gets the first one-on-one date, and it’s starting ASAP. She doesn’t even have time to go wash her face because Arie is here with his motorcycle jacket and bland face, and they’re off! The women all come outside to wave goodbye, but I would totally be the one to use that opportunity to run for the showers. I can’t imagine hot water lasts very long when you have 20+ women bunking up.

Arie brings Becca K. to a house filled with lobster tails and a chocolate fountain. This is already my idea of a dream date (just replace Arie with Oscar Isaac). It gets better: Rachel Zoe is there to style her, and Becca gets to pick something “special” to wear later. Arie says he’ll leave them to it and heads to the other room. A date that includes alone time? Wow, the thrills keep on comin’. After Becca’s tried everything on, Arie reveals she can keep it all (!!!). She swoons. I get it.

The gifts aren’t over yet, though: Arie presents her with sparkly Louboutin heels. Damn. OK, I see your game here, ABC. You needed to sell Arie to me, and you’ve won me over with shoes and light bites. Ugh, I’m so predictable.

“Your eyes, like, suck people in…I think.” — Becca K., so romantic

A mysterious man appears and says Neil Lane sends his regards. Wait, she’s getting jewels too?!? Unreal. To go with her outfit, Becca K. is given a diamond necklace and earrings to wear. She and Arie kiss because this dude just threw thousands of dollars of merch at her. “The girls didn’t lie when they said he has pillow lips,” Becca declares.

After, Becca goes back to the mansion with her shopping bags in hand and new shoes on her feet. The women literally start chugging rosé they are so jealous, and Bibiana cries when she sees the beautiful shoes. “Oh my God, they’re going to get married,” she wails. Um, there’s still weeks and weeks of this show to go. I don’t think Arie’s made up his mind just because Becca wears a sample size. Well, then again, this is Arie.

After the commercial break, Becca and Arie begin the “sit and pretend to eat” portion of the date. Over candlelight, they discuss cars (of course), Arie’s time on The Bachelorette, his gray hair, and Becca’s former relationship. She shares a sad story about her father’s death, and Arie responds with vague statements like, “Family’s important.” He then gives her the rose and reveals she gets to keep the effing Neil Lane diamond earrings. God, this girl lucked the fuck out. They kiss and whisper into each others’ mouths, “I like kissing you.”

Back at the mansion, Krystal receives the next one-on-one date card. She gets serious death stares, and I recommend she cleanses that house with sage, stat. For her one-on-one date, Arie is taking Krystal to his hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona. We see all the sights: the Pizza Hut where Arie worked, the tree where he had his first kiss, and his high school. He makes a point of calling out where “the art nerds were,” so that’s the kind of guy Arie is. Then Arie takes Krystal to his house, and she already starts thinking what it’d be like to move in. They look at family photo albums, and he opens up about how his grandfather was his role model because he was a “total man’s man.” I’ll refrain from a long discussion on toxic masculinity, but I will say this: Arie, we all know the cars are compensating for something. We. All. Know. The trip to Scottsdale ends with Krystal meeting his entire family. I’m sure they were thinking, “WTF,” but they hid it well.

We check back in with the women at the mansion: The next day will bring a group date with Maquel, Marikh, Tia, Valerie, Annaliese, Lauren G., Kendall, Bekah M., Jenny, Seinne, Jenna, Caroline, Brittany T., Bibiana, and Chelsea.

“I’m trying to be cool and, like, impress you a little bit,” – Arie
revealing his hand

Krystal and Arie’s date continues with a non-meal in Los Angeles. She reveals that her parents divorced when she was young. “I just really felt like my parents didn’t want me,” she explains. Because of this, growing up was hard. She shares a moving story about how she saved up all her money when she was young to buy a comforter because her mom couldn’t. She also ended up being the caretaker for her little brother. But for the past several months, he’s been living on the streets and refuses her help. Naturally, it breaks Krystal’s heart. Arie dries her tears and says “it’s not your fault.” He gives her the rose, she accepts, and they have a teary make out. From there, they get a private concert from Connor Duermit. Who is this man? According to Google, he’s a self-described “pop-soul” singer. I don’t know if that clears it up, but, eh, there have been worse performers on this show.

The next morning, Krystal recaps her date for the gals…well, kind of. She plays coy, and everyone calls her out for being vague.

“When you’re like that, you seem shady.” – Bibiana

They don’t have long to be mad, though: It’s time for the group date. Arie drives up and does some spins. (My God, can we have one episode without cars or racing?) The challenge today is demolition derby: If your car stops running, you are out. Tia’s excited because “people in Arkansas actually do this. Like, for fun.” Before the derby begins, the women decorate their cars with spray paint. Some fun slogans are added to the cars, including my personal favorite: “Look alive, bitches.”

But not everybody is having fun. Annaliese is crying because she had a “traumatic” experience with bumper cars as a kid. “I just remember being so alone and so scared,” she says. Nobody seems to have much sympathy for poor Annaliese, though. There are a lot of eye rolls and complaints that her tears gave her more alone time with Arie, who came over to comfort her. Jenny in particular is ruthless.

“Give her further trauma.” – Jenny

Once the derby begins, Annaliese manages to overcome her tears long enough to t-bone Chelsea’s car. So this is what it takes to finally make her smile. Bibiana is declared a “monster” by Chris Harrison. As more and more cars crash I think to myself, “This looks fun.” At first, it seems like Brittany will win, but Seinne ends up the champion. She wins a trophy, milk (this is a tradition apparently?), and alone time with Arie. I’d just take the milk, TBH.

Following a quick change into cocktail dresses, the group date after party begins. Chelsea grabs Arie immediately for alone time; the others seem surprised about this, but this is Chelsea’s M.O. Once she has Arie to herself, Chelsea reveals that she has a son. He says he’s totally open to it, and they make out HARD. Next, Arie talks to Seinne. He’s very shocked that she went to Yale and immediately recognizes that she’s out of his league. They kiss.

“I barely graduated high school and worked at Pizza Hut.” – Arie

By the end of the night, Bibiana is cranky as hell and refusing to talk to Arie. She’s tired, annoyed with everyone around her, and ready to call it a night so she storms off and slams a door. Been there, done that. It’s like holding a mirror up to myself! Meanwhile, Bekah delivers the smoothest line I’ve seen. She straight-up asks Arie, “Wanna kiss?” They make out for a while, but it’s Seinne who ultimately gets the group date rose.

With two-thirds of the episode over, it’s time for the pre-rose ceremony cocktail hour to begin. Arie makes a little award for Brittany for being the “most hardcore.” Even though this was obviously a producer’s idea, it’s charming. Bekah and Arie sneak off to make out. She’s waring a fabulous fur coat, and I think I love her.

Tonight’s drama will clearly revolve around Krystal, who pisses everyone off because she talks to Arie twice in the night. This honestly might throw Bibiana over the edge. She goes off on Krystal for interrupting her time with Arie while the other women snicker in the background. Krystal doesn’t seem too worried about it, though. After all, she’s the one with a rose.

And with that, the rose ceremony begins: Maquel, Jacqueline, Bekah M., Jenna, Chelsea, Lauren S., Tia, Annaliese, Lauren B., Kendall, Brittany, Ashley, Marikh, Caroline, and Bibiana are all here to stay another week.

Jenny takes the breakup hard. “I’m not sad about you, I’m sad about leaving my friends,” she tells Arie. Wow, what delightful shade. “He literally picked a taxidermist over me,” she grouses as she heads off into the night. Mic drop.

Next week: Tears! And this quote, “I’m going to kill Krystal.”

'The Bachelor' Contestant Annaliese Puccini Says She's Actually Here to Make Friends

Annaliese Puccini calls herself “a jack of all trades,” but clearly that doesn’t apply to demolition derbies, bumper cars, or racing. Still, even though tonight’s Bachelor episode poked fun at the 32-year-old’s childhood bumper car trauma, who could blame her? Whiplash is no joke. Seriously, what were the producers thinking when they decided to plan a date that was the equivalent of like 100 car accidents at a time? And what was going through Arie’s mind when he clearly saw tears running down Annaliese’s face, but asked, “Everyone doing good, having a good time?” When Annaliese said she was having a tough time, Arie looked at her and actually said, “You are?” Um, what?!

But back to Annaliese. Although demolishing cars isn’t her thing, she’s definitely well versed in other areas. On the day before filming The Bachelor began, she told us she’s an event planner, a painter, and has done acting and modeling since she was three years old. “I like to keep busy and be different and creative,” she says. Of course, that’s not news to anyone who watched her come out of the limo on night one wearing a mask and holding a bag of chocolate kisses. (What you didn’t see? She also made a painting for Arie, with a note on the back.)

In next week’s episode, it appears that bumper cars aren’t the only thing that get the tears flowing for Annaliese. Upon seeing Arie kiss other girls (just a regular day on this show you signed up for), a distraught Annaliese says she just “can’t get a break right now.” Perhaps she should commiserate with Bibiana?

Until then, we caught up with the San Francisco resident to learn more about her life outside the Bachelor mansion walls and her unusual goal for going on the show. Read on.

When it comes to love, what are you looking for in a relationship with Arie?

Annaliese Puccini: I like somebody that has a creative flair and is appreciative of my creative self. Someone who is not rolling his eyes when I’m making a mask to go with my dress. I definitely want somebody who appreciates it, but balances me out.

You clearly knew Arie is known as the kissing bandit. Had you watched him on Emily’s season?

Annaliese: I watched parts of his season. My mom and my grandma are big fans of the show. I do remember liking him and thinking he’s cute and having positive vibes towards him. I didn’t know a lot about him, but I did some research. I was shocked when he was announced as the Bachelor, which I’m sure most people were, but then I was pleasantly surprised. I thought, you know, he is husband material. I am a think-into-the-future kind of person, so I like to see how my life might play out with different people.

PHOTO: ABC

Since your mom and your grandma watch the show, did they give you any advice going into this?

Annaliese: My grandma doesn’t know! She’ll be shocked when she sees me. She’ll be so excited!

Wow. So how are you going to explain not being in contact with her for a bit?

Annaliese: Well, I made a little care package for her. There’s a woman at a farmer’s market near me that sells these forever roses. They are real roses that are fresh and you can touch them, but they somehow are freeze-dried, so they stay forever looking like fresh roses. I got her a little pot of that, and I wrote her a letter that says I’m off on an adventure to find love. I said to my mom, “As soon as questions start to arise…send her the care package.” So it’s going to be a shock. She’ll be totally surprised.

Given that your grandma doesn’t know, what did your mom tell you before you went on the show?

Annaliese: She was just like, “You deserve this, and you’re ready. I’m so proud that you’re taking this step to find love.” I think she was just happy for me.

What are your non-negotiables in your next relationship, ideally with Arie?

Annaliese: That is not a question I have thought about! [Laughs] But as I get older, there are certain things that I can compromise on. I definitely want kids, so if somebody didn’t want kids, I think that would be a hard thing for me to stay in a relationship. And my last serious relationship was lacking the physical connection, so I feel like that is really important.

You painted a picture to give to Arie. [Ed note: You can see it in the video below.] Why?

Annaliese: I just wanted it to be something that he could always remember this journey. This is just something special that he can keep forever.

And aside from finding love, what are you looking forward to as part of your journey on the show?

Annaliese: I’m really excited to make friends, which I realize is probably not what the other girls might say. I just feel like it’s so hard to make friends as you get older. I’ve seen some of the friendships that have formed from past seasons, so I just am excited to meet the girls. I feel like they are probably amazing. Obviously there’s going to be competition, but I’m going to make some new friends too, which is awesome.

Here's the Very Likely End Date for 'The Big Bang Theory'

All things must come to an end, and love it or loathe it, hit show The Big Bang Theory is one of those things. After more than 10 seasons of dumb blond jokes (poor Penny), tone-deaf cracks at Raj’s accent, and, more recently, the revival of that terrible trope of men being jealous about their wives’ work success and colleagues of the opposite sex, we now know when the sitcom will probably tie off its storylines and ride off into the Netflix archives.

The show, of course, has only been renewed for one more season following its current eleventh reincarnation, so the end of season 12 is a pretty natural point for Big Bang Theory to wrap up. On Saturday at the Television Critics Association’s winter tour, Johnny Galecki, who plays Leonard, gave a hint that appears to confirm the above.

“The only manner in which the cast has discussed wrapping [the show] has been that we’re all going to be very sad when that day comes,” Galecki said. “But I think at this point everyone’s very comfortable with 12 seasons being a good time to go home and see our families.”

The show, according to TV Line is TV’s “top-rated, most watched comedy,” so it might be a little bit of a blow to CBS. Luckily, its cast is pretty much set for life: The lead actors are now reportedly taking home $1 million per episode. Now that’s some Friends money right there.

Vanessa Kirby Could Be Replaced by Helena Bonham Carter on 'The Crown'

The third season of The Crown promises to be especially bittersweet. On one hand, as the Netflix series jumps forward in time, we’ll have to say goodbye to the award-winning cast we’ve come to know and love, who will be replaced by an all-new set of actors so that the characters can age appropriately without the crew’s having to painstakingly apply any cosmetic or CGI magic to Claire Foy. On the other hand, the new cast is shaping up to be pretty excellent—and the casting news just keeps getting better.

British newspaper The Evening Standard reports that Helena Bonham Carter is “all but confirmed” to replace Vanessa Kirby as Queen Elizabeth II’s impulsive younger sister, Princess Margaret, in the new episodes. HBC, who is perhaps the perfect choice to follow in Kirby’s incredibly hard-to-follow footsteps, was reportedly previously considered for the role of the middle-aged QE2 before the powers that be decidedly (correctly) that she was a better fit for the clever, moody, and dramatic Princess Margaret.

The rumored casting decision is all the more auspicious in light of Bonham Carter’s own ties to the royal family. According to The Evening Standard, her Oxfordshire home, Mill House, was once the residence of Margaret’s lady-in-waiting Jane Stevens. Additionally, Bonham Carter previously played Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, in 2010’s The King’s Speech, which will undoubtedly serve her well if she really does play Elizabeth’s daughter on The Crown.

Only one member of the new cast has been officially confirmed so far: In what promises to be an equally spectacular casting choice, Olivia Colman is slated to replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II. Colman, who, like Bonham Carter, has also played the Queen Mother before (in 2012’s Hyde Park on Hudson), recently spoke about how thrilled she is to play the current monarch on the hit show. “I have remained ridiculously excited since [finding out],” she told the Radio Times. “I’m trying to be cool.”

In other casting “news,” Matt Smith recently proposed that Selena Gomez should play Meghan Markle on The Crown—despite the fact that Markle most likely won’t show up on the series until the fourth season or later. Hey, a (TV) prince can dream.
