Stassi Schroeder Will Never Wear a Bikini on National Television Again

My fascination with Bravo runs deep. The formerly humble, semi-highbrow network was once known for re-runs of Twin Peaks and episodes of Inside the Actors’ Studio, but in the early 2000s a seed was planted. Bravo created a “reality” show that followed five gay men making over straight dudes around the country. The rest is pretty much pop culture history. From the Real Housewives franchise to Southern Charm, the network has spent the last decade or so making legitimate celebrities out of its reality talent, most of whom have millions upon millions of Instagram followers and fans who have opinions on their every move.

One such star: Stassi Schroeder, the queen bee of Vanderpump Rules, one of the crowned jewels in Bravo’s repertoire. The show—which kicks off its eighth season tonight— follows servers and bartenders at Sur, an LA restaurant owned by former Real Housewife of Beverly Hills Lisa Vanderpump. During her tenture, Stassi has been called a lot of things: a mean girl, entitled, annoying, a bitch. But she’s also been praised for being relatable, funny, honest, and undeniably herself.

When we met, Stassi had just finished speaking at Glamour’s annual Women of the Year summit where she gave a talk about how some people can be assholes, and that’s OK—certainly an on-brand topic for the 31-year-old. In person, I found her to be friendly, funny, and highly engaging—whether the result of media training or just being a grounded person, she made strong eye contact and was fully committed to our chat.

We talked about the show, yes, but also about her upcoming wedding to boyfriend Beau Clark, a new cast-memeber on Vanderpump (look out for her new bridal column on Glamour this week!) In typical Stassi fashion, though, she refused to tell me a single detail about her dress. She was forthcoming about her life in the public eye—she firmly said she’ll never wear a bikini on television again—and how it feels when people try to cancel her on social media. I asked her about the holiday she bought (just listen — it’ll make sense) and—something we both unapologetically agree on—how shopping can be one of the great stress relievers.

I wasn’t shocked when she asked me which VPR cast-member was the most annoying on social media, and not surprisingly, I had an answer for her.

How Sheinelle Jones Chose What to Wear When She Became a 'Today' Show Anchor

Broadcast journalist Sheinelle Jones moved her family to New York from Philly for her dream job on NBC’s Today show. Five years later she’s the cohost of the beloved morning show’s third hour, the co-anchor of the Saturday edition of Weekend Today, and a correspondent for all platforms of NBC News. When she came in to record her episode of Glamour‘s new podcast What I Wore When,—during which I talk to women about an outfit they chose during a pivotal moment in their lives—she chose to talk about the dress she wore to her first day on the job.

If you think picking out a dress for work can be stressful, imagine having to do it with the knowledge that millions of people will be seeing—and maybe judging—it. The dress she chose: A floral, fitted Cynthia Rowley stretchy sheath that she got at Nordstrom. The dress, she told me, still holds up.

“You know what’s crazy, is that when I close my eyes to think about how I would look, and I opened my eyes to what I had on. I looked better than I imagined I could look.”

I was particularly excited to talk to Sheinelle. Growing up, my family always had the Today show on as we got ready in the morning and so, as an adult, I’ve remained loyal, even during the show’s ups and downs. One of the program’s bright spots, for me, is the number of women broadcasters they’ve introduced during the last few years.

When she came in for our interview, Sheinelle, 41, was in the process of booking parent-teacher conferences straight from her phone—I have a 10-month-old, so didn’t know that was a thing—and talked openly about the challenges of working six days a week while raising three children. Even though I was the one asking the questions, I felt comfortable talking to Sheneille—especially when she put her interviewer hat on and turned some questions back on me.

She was cool and real and we bonded over our love of shopping at men’s stores in the ‘90s (shout out, Structure), she explained how “news girls” (her words) choose their outfits and why the Today show trusts its talent to dress themselves, aging, and the fact that she still doesn’t own an “I’m successful!” handbag despite being, in fact, quite successful. She also broke into song four times which I found highly enjoyable.

Toward the end of our conversation, Sheinelle shared with me a particularly special part of her morning routine that involves her young daughter, and also casually said I should come on the Today show for a fashion segment. Sheneille, you have my number.

You probably saw that one picture from Max Mara’s fall 2019 show, of three models walking side by side down the runway wearing bold monochromatic looks, each centered around a teddy coat, that was shared widely on social media. (#CozySquadGoals.) It wasn’t just a striking image—it was confirmation that our collective love of teddy, which had already been going strong since 2018, would continue well into 2019.

Victor VIRGILE

It wasn’t just Max Mara: Michael Kors, Coach, Sandy Liang, Veronica Beard, and other designers incorporated the cozy fabric into their fall collections. Kim Kardashian Says She 'Got in Trouble' With Kanye West for Letting Daughter North Wear Lipstick

Kim Kardashian seems like a pretty cool mom: Despite her busy schedule, she appears to spend plenty of time doting on her children, bringing them along for epic vacations, and ensuring they have plenty of time with the rest of the Kardashian-Jenner dynasty. But, there’s one thing she does as a mom that apparently infuriates her husband, Kanye West: She’s been known to let daughter North West, 6, wear lipstick from time to time.

Since her birth, North has followed in her mom’s stylish footsteps, often wearing pieces from her own wardrobe of designer clothes. She’s been spotted rocking a $750 Alexander Wang Marti Micro leopard-print shoulder bag to school (I mean, who would say no if that were sent to them?) and walked the runway at Los Angeles Fashion Week. And, on special occasions, she’s been spotted wearing bright red lipstick a time or two.

Kim’s been mom-shamed for her decision to let her young daughter wear makeup in the past. In 2018, little North was spotted with a red lip that Kim later revealed was part of Kim’s very own line. “She picked it,” Kim explained on Twitter.

But now, Kim says, Kanye has had enough with North’s makeup.

“She loves makeup but her dad won’t let her wear it,” Kim recently shared with E! News. “I think he had it, he changed all the rules. I’d let her wear, you know, she has a little red for Christmas, I’d let her wear a red lip, or I’d let her do one pop of something. I’d let her, if she’s wearing a black dress, a black lip.”

Kim also shared that she’s not the only member of the Kardashian-Jenner family that Kanye may have to worry about when it comes to giving their children makeup to play with.

“Kylie would give her all of these lip kits, so I kind of got in trouble for that,” she said. “So, it’s now no more makeup.”

However, Kim also shared that her eldest child can still “weigh in” on her mom’s fashion choices—so we’re sure to have peeks at North’s taste-making skills for years to come, lipstick or no.
