Rose Gold Hair Is the Perfect Fall Update to a Huge Summer Hair Color Trend


Celebrities and Instagrammers alike were obsessed this summer with one of the season’s biggest hair color trends: stylish, vivacious pink. The love for pink champagne hair hit us all hard, and celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Keke Palmer and Ashley Benson embraced bright pink hair. But just because the weather’s changed—and along with it, a traditional foray into darker hair hues—doesn’t mean we have to give up pink: a trending metallic shade has inspired the perfect autumn update of summer’s favorite shade.

Rose gold is the more metallic, multi-dimensional version of the bubblegum pinks we saw during the summer. Rather than calling for hair to be bleached blond and then dyed light pink, this trend incorporates highlights and lowlights throughout the hair so it doesn’t look flat. The resulting mix of shades makes it look shimmery and metallic, and the wash of pink gives it the rosy tone.

Busy Philipps dyed best friend Michelle Williams’ hair a faded version of pink that matches her own rose gold hair that she DIYs. The duo created the color at home by applying some leave-in hair tint over Williams’ signature platinum blond, but for those of us who want a little extra help getting the look, head to a salon for a professional job that will ensure you achieve the right shade. One of the best parks of this shade is that you don’t have to be blond to work the look: it looks great with darker shades of hair with the help of carefully placed strands of color or ombré.

Next time you miss your alarm and show up late to the office looking flustered in a pair of mismatched shoes, you can go right ahead and tell any naysayers that you’re simply too #fashun. At last night’s InStyle Awards in Los Angeles, Selena Gomez arrived wearing head-to-toe Jacquemus, a look that included a pair of summery mules that, upon closer inspection, each featured a distinct sculptural heel—one square, the other circular. This makes her the latest celebrity to stan the mismatched footwear trend, joining folks like Nicole Kidman and Naomie Harris, who have tried styles by Calvin Klein in red carpets this year. Maybe wearing a Chuck Taylor in one shoe and a Stan Smith in the other won’t translate as well, but if you take a page out of these celebrities’ playbooks, you’ll find that mixing up your footwear is a lot less intimidating than it seems. 'Root Beer Hair' Is the Fall Brunette Hair Trend You'll Actually Want

Logging in to Pinterest can serve up endless hair inspo, but at the same time, it’s easy to feel boxed in by the overload of light brown hair with blond highlights. The color combo (recently given the catchy name of cream soda hair) is super pretty, but if you’re not in the color range already, we have good news. There’s now a similar spin for brown hair, and it’s going to be just as ubiquitous. It even comes equipped with its own beverage-themed name: “Root beer hair” is the gorgeous, warm red tint of highlights that you’re going to want on your head.

What does root beer hair look like? Picture brown with subtle auburn streaks running through, which add dimension and warmth. Once you know its name, you start seeing it everywhere. The red glints are part of the reason Selena Gomez’s hair always looks so fantastic.

One of the first iterations came to us via Sarah Hyland, with the combination also going by “cinnamon chocolate” (the hair world loves a food moniker; see also: “chocolate chip cookie hair” and “citrus hair“).

Chris Greene, a hair colorist at Beverly Hills’ Mèche Salon, told Refinery29 that the key is to look for rich, warm highlights and lowlights, all within that toasty brown color family. Some stylists are even comparing the hue to hazelnuts, given the similarity in the shades.

If you can stop staring at it for a second, you’ve got a stronger will than we do. And while blonds got the “pastel hair, no bleach needed” trend, this one’s way easier for brunettes to dabble in. A quick gloss or glaze (they’re usually the same thing) with something like John Freida or Rita Hazan’s at-home tint, and you’re set for root beer. The end result: color that looks anything but canned.
