'Fruit Nails' Are Trending, and They're Perfect for Summer

Jelly nail art has been all the rage this summer—decorating our fingers with a finish that’s part stained glass window, part squishy sandal throwback. There’s a nostalgic appeal to them we can’t get enough of, but the latest idea to arrive on our feeds might be even better. Enter fruit nails, which (like jelly nails) are a glossy, fun, and eye-catching.

There’s no single template for testing the trend, but we’re particularly enamored of New York nail artist Mei Kawajiri‘s take. Kawajiri recently shared the manicure she gave Gigi Hadid, involving a sheer base decorated with ultra-delicate kiwis, watermelons, and strawberries. “Summer vacation Nails no.2 is Fruits,” she declared in the image caption. Consider it the perfect way to celebrate the warmest days of the year.

Already, other nail artists have shown off all the ways you can mix and match the style on social media. You can do it Kawajiri’s way—with a natural base and dainty accents—or you can go for punchier neon colors that incorporate larger fruits and patterns. The possibilities are actually endless and there’s so much inspiration out there. Kawajiri even went on Instagram to show off tomato nails she did by painting teeny tiny tomato vines on a customer’s hand. Scroll through for a whole season’s worth of inspiration:

If you’re too busy to pop into the salon for a fresh serving of fruit nail art, you can still give yourself a DIY manicure at home with Olive & June’s fruit nail stickers. They have an adorable fruit salad mani kit that includes polish, top coat, and a set of decals for $22. Order up!

Cherry Blond Hair Is the Perfect Shade for Summer

It’s around this time of summer that we’re looking for a way to shake things up a little bit (kind of like that February beauty rut, but make it hot and humid). And although finally going to that new brunch place or trying a yoga class are great, there’s not a lot that can compare to the “new hair, new me” rush switching up your hair color gives you. And while the jury still might be out on what will be the song of the summer, there is one contender and one contender only for hair color trend of the summer, and that’s cherry blond hair.

If you haven’t seen it on your Instagram feed already, let me explain: Picture rose gold hair—but up the saturation on the red and have the blond as the accent, rather than at the forefront, of the shade. It’s vibrant, bright, multidimensional, definitely unexpected, and it’s fun. Plus, there’s a version of it out there for everyone. In other words, it’s the perfect summer hair color.

Check it out:

HelloGiggles, which noted the trend, also called out one of its early adopters: Maisie Williams. The Game of Thrones actress went for a lighter version of the look, with more of a pinkish-red shade that used her base color to add dimension.

You don’t have to do a solid color, either: Weave the shades throughout your hair as highlights instead.

Or go with an ombré look, which is gorgeous on darker shades.

And you can go super-multidimensional, too—I can’t even count the number of shades my eyes are seeing with this look.

Should you be nervous about making a bold leap when it comes to color, try a gloss to start. Last time my hair stylist bleached my hair, we decided to add in a wash of pink with one, just to switch things up a bit from my normal blond. Reader, I loved it. And although we went for a watercolor level of saturation over my hair (I called time when my hair was, confusingly, the color of a carrot), it helped get me comfortable playing with a different color—and imagine how I might look as a cherry blond.

If you’re ready to go all in? Bring pictures of the looks you love to your hair stylist. Because there are so many different variations on this trend—and a lot of it has to do with what base color you’re working with—it’s best to have a visual aid to show your stylist for inspo. (P.S. Don’t forget the Olaplex on your way out the door!)

Yes, You Should Absolutely Have a Hot Girl Summer

When it comes to summer, people seem to divide into two camps: those who dread the heat, hibernating until September, and those of us who are right. We live for the shortened hemlines, the debauchery, the sweaty nights out spent talking to strangers. We are consumers of pizza-shaped pool floats and Instagram-photo-shoot enthusiasts. Some small part of us believes it’ll be hot and humid forever. And we have lived according to the “hot girl summer” constitution, long before it was ever given a name.

For the uninitiated, “hot girl summer” is the phrase that will soon appear below every single Instagram thirst trap on your feed. The definition is a little ambiguous, but here’s how Jordyn Woods used it in a sentence.

The concept can be traced back to Megan Thee Stallion, the Houston artist who’s known for rapping about subjects once reserved for men—sex, money, and confidence. She opened one of her most popular songs, “Cash Shit,” with the lyrics “real hot girl shit,” and she’s been known as “thee hot girl” ever since, a title she’s earned over and over. Take the cover of her recent album, Fever. Stallion is decked out in full leopard and almost engulfed in flames, looking like a mix between Jessica Rabbit and the baddest bitch in the wild, wild West. The text reads like a warning, “She’s thee hot girl and she’s bringing thee heat.”

Fans soon took Stallion’s title and turned into a humid, sweat-soaked rallying cry, and the idea of the hot girl summer was born. But much like 2018’s big dick energy (better known as BDE), which started with a tweet about Pete Davidson’s, well, D and quickly turned into a cultural phenomenon much greater than the comedian’s nether regions, hot girl summer is about more than Stallion. Because hot girl summer isn’t just cute Internet slang. It’s a lifestyle.

But how to explain hot girl summer? For starters, it’s useful to compare it to the aforementioned BDE. Not because the two are similar, but because they’re polar opposites. BDE is all about the casual confidence of being well-endowed. Think: that not quite hot but somehow oddly appealing dude who lived on your freshman hall, had off-beat taste in music, and still pulled a shocking number of girls. You saw his cute smirk, his swagger, and you just knew. That’s nice, but there’s nothing subtle about hot girl summer. Hot girl summer is all about oozing your hottest, loudest, most extra life—without apologies.

As Stallion put it to The Root, “It’s about women and men being unapologetically them, just having a good-ass time, hyping up their friends, doing you. You definitely have to be a person who can be the life of the party and just a bad bitch.”
