Ellen DeGeneres Has a Sweet Story About Her Visit With Meghan, Harry, and Baby Archie


Ellen DeGeneres paid a visit to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in London over the summer, and she has the—no joke—sweetest story about baby Archie.

The talk show host told her studio audience about the visit on Monday, September 9. “They are so amazing—the cutest couple and so down to Earth,” DeGeneres said of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “I hate it—I see them get attacked, and it’s not fair. They’re just two of the most down-to-Earth, compassionate people. They’re doing so much good work.”

DeGeneres is no-doubt referring to the wave of criticism Meghan Markle and Prince Harry received last week for chartering a private jet on their vacation, which some view as contradicting their stance on environmentalism. DeGeneres was one of the first celebrities to come to the couple’s defense. “Portia and I met Prince Harry and Meghan in England to talk about their work on wildlife conservation…Imagine being attacked for everything you do, when all you’re trying to do is make the world better,” she wrote on Instagram August 19.

What DeGeneres said on her talk show this week echoes that sentiment. “Portia and I talked to them about all the conservation they’re doing for wildlife,” she said. “They’re doing all this work in Botswana for elephants, and I love that. And they like what I’m doing for the gorillas in Rwanda. So we’re all going to do something together.”

Then, she told the anecdote to end all anecdotes about meeting Archie for the first time. “I can’t tell you how sweet they are, but the most important thing is I got to hold little Archie, the baby. I fed Archie. I held Archie.”

Meghan Markle Just Appeared in Her First Instagram Story as a Royal


Meghan Markle has officially posted an Instagram Story. Well, sort of: The official @SussexRoyal Instagram account uploaded a Story on Wednesday, August 21, that featured the duchess beaming from ear to ear. According to the caption that went along with the Story, Markle was working behind the scenes on a shoot for the Smart Works capsule collection she’s launching for charity.

If you’re unfamiliar, Smart Works is a charity that helps unemployed women in the U.K. find work. Markle is working with four brands (Marks & Spencer, John Lewis & Partners, Jigsaw, and Misha Nonoo) on a workwear capsule, and all of those proceeds will go to Smart Works.

Markle’s appearance on the shoot was a surprise, according to royals expert Omid Scobie. “I’m told that Duchess Meghan surprised the entire @SmartWorksHQ team when she showed up at the London shoot today,” he tweeted.

Enthusiasm for Meghan Markle‘s Smart Works collaboration is high. “Meghan is always thinking of innovative ways to raise money /resources for places. Her creativity is unmatched and her connects are equally impressive! I can’t wait to buy from this collection,” one person wrote on Twitter. “Hopefully it doesn’t sell out too fast.”

In a second Instagram Story post, @SussexRoyal doubled down on the mission of Markle’s capsule collection: “An initiative supporting the Smart Works collective, which will equip women entering the workforce with the key workforce with the key workwear essentials they need,” the brief caption reads.

It’s been a whirlwind year for Markle, who welcomed her first child with Prince Harry, Archie, in May 2019. She’s kept a relatively low profile since then, though this Instagram Story proves she is back in full work mode. This fall, she, Prince Harry, and baby Archie are slated to go on a royal tour of South Africa, Malawi, and Angola.

When They See Us Review: This Is a Powerful Story That Must Be Seen


“I’m here for my son.”

When I first heard these words in When They See Us, Ava DuVernay’s limited series about the 1989 Central Park jogger case for Netflix, I felt the full weight of them. They’re five simple words, but they reveal a determination to protect—and a fear of what’s to come. They remind me of the countless stories I’ve heard of black mothers who’ve said this, or similar, at police precincts after learning of their sons’ arrests. Women who know all too well what can happen to their babies, whose only goal is to get their boys home as quickly and safely as possible.

And when the worst happens—an arrest, death—society tells them it’s their fault. When Daniel Patrick Moynihan published The Negro Family: The Case for National Action in 1965, he claimed female-led black households were “so out of line with the rest of the American society” their families were placed at a “distinct disadvantage.” Just last year, Reverend Jasper Williams used Aretha Franklin’s funeral as an opportunity to call single parent households “abortion after birth”. “Seventy percent of our households are led by our precious, proud, fine black women,” he said in his eulogy. “But as proud, beautiful, and fine as our black women are, one thing a black woman cannot do. A black woman cannot raise a black boy to be a man.”

These men, and others, have contributed to a long-held—and false—belief that black boys can’t thrive as long as single mothers lead the families. And when Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise were arrested for the rape and assault of Trisha Meili in 1989, many pointed at them as proof of that. The boys, all between the ages of 14 and 16 at the time of their arrests, were vilified by the press. The New York Post’s Pete Hamill wrote that the five came from a “land of no fathers” with “to smash, hurt, rob, stomp, rape.” Donald Trump spent $85,000 on full page ads calling for their execution. In 1990, all five were convicted and sentenced to between five and 15 years in prison. After the lone assailant confessed to the crime in 2002, their convictions were vacated; in 2014, the five men settled with the city of New York for $41 million.

With When They See Us, DuVernay sets the narrative straight. They are not “The Central Park Five.” They are “The Exonerated Five.” They are Kevin, Antron, Yusef, Raymond, and Korey—young men with promise who became victims of racism and a corrupt criminal justice system. DuVernay’s powerful four-part retelling begins the night of the arrests and follows the five throughout their trials, convictions, and post-release. It tells their story with all the facts—and, most important, it humanizes them. “We only got to hear about the boys through one lens,” Storm Reid—who plays Lisa, Korey Wise’s girlfriend—tells Glamour. “We didn’t get to know them as young men and as teenagers. We didn’t get to know about their family lives or their hobbies and interests. A piece of their adolescence was taken away from them, and what Ava does is gives it back to all of us.”

This Story About Baby Archie Fixing the Royal 'Feud' Is Cracking Me Up


Baby Archie only arrived last week, but he’s already been tasked, reportedly, with something big: fixing the so-called “feud” between Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, Kate Middleton, and Prince William.

I just…I have a lot of feelings about this. On the one hand, sure: New babies coming into a family are known to ease tensions or rifts. There’s simply no time to be passive aggressive toward your annoying brother-in-law from Texas when there’s a screaming child in the house. But on the other: LOL, what? Baby Archie has only been on this planet for 11 days. He shouldn’t have to bother himself with his famous family’s problems. All he needs to be worrying about at the present moment is napping.

According to People magazine, Baby Archie gives Prince William and Prince Harry, who have allegedly grown apart over the last few years, an opportunity to reconnect.

“William and Harry will want their children to know their cousins and do things together, so they will work harder at their relationship,” a source close to the royal family tells People. “The brothers will have a different kind of relationship and move on.”

Look, I get it: If a feud does exist—and that’s a big if—then Baby Archie probably will help the two princes put their differences aside. But now all I’m picturing is Archie wearing a three-piece suit and playing couple’s therapist to his father and uncle. In my mind, they’ll all meet in Archie’s vegan paint-colored nursery and hash out their issues. Archie will have to take naps every two minutes, of course, because he’s a literal baby. And his counseling rate would be $500 an hour, at minimum.

I kid, I kid. Archie’s arrival is obviously cause for celebration and an opportunity to mend any fences within the royal core four. Keep in mind, though, that a feud might not even exist. Royals expert Katie Nicholl told Glamour a few months back that any stories of drama between either William and Harry or Kate and Meghan are grossly exaggerated.

“I think this idea of there being a catfight between [Meghan and Kate] has made tantalizing headlines, but I don’t believe that,” she said. “I’ve never heard from my sources that there has ever been a feud or a falling-out. I had heard about an upset over the dress fitting for Princess Charlotte. And I had heard that while Harry was very keen for the two of them to become best friends, there was never that sort of a friendship.”

She continued, “I think there is some truth to there having been some tension—not just between the duchesses but between the dukes, as well. As we all know, things can gather momentum pretty quickly. So while I think there’s been tension, I don’t believe there has been some feud.”

For what it’s worth, a source tells People that despite all the changes happening in the royal family (like the core four splitting offices), “There is never any doubt that [Harry and William] will be there for each other 100 percent and support each other when it matters.”

*American Horror Story* Season 9: Everything We Know So Far


Surprise, b–ch: A new season of American Horror Story is on the horizon. Yes, Ryan Murphy’s annual fright fest is coming back some time this fall and, as per usual, we don’t know much about what’s to come. Murphy is notoriously secretive about the AHS seasons; we often don’t know the theme or the full cast or anything until roughly a month before the show’s premiere.

That being said, there are some tidbits about the ninth installation that are trickling out. A few cast members have already confirmed their return, while others have announced they’re sitting this season out. Murphy, who isn’t that active on social media, has teased a few things on Instagram, as well. To be clear, we’re still pretty much in the dark when it comes to American Horror Story season nine, but there’s enough info out there to get fans excited.

So let’s dig in, shall we? Here’s everything we know about the latest season of AHS:

The premiere date. Unless Murphy decides to break form, expect season nine to premiere either in September or October of 2019.

The cast. The only confirmed cast members so far are Emma Roberts and Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy, who will play boyfriend and girlfriend, according to Murphy. Sarah Paulson and Billy Eichner appeared on Watch What Happens Live in January and revealed they knew details about season nine, which suggests they’re both returning. Unfortunately, though, Evan Peters—who’s been a staple on AHS since its inception—is not appearing on this season. He confirmed the news in April, telling Extra, “No, I’m gonna sit this season out.”

The theme. Nothing’s been announced yet, but the dominant theory is that season nine centers on aliens. There have been multiple references to extraterrestrials throughout AHS, most notably in Asylum. But even Apocalypse, the most recent season, had some alien themes: Venable, Paulson’s character, called the outpost servants “grays,” which is a popular nickname for aliens. Also, in one episode, Kathy Bates’ character performed the same song HAL does in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

There’s also a theory that suggests each AHS season represents one of the nine circles of hell in Dante’s Inferno. There are only two circles left: lust and violence. Apocalypse could easily represent violence (there was so much carnage last season), which means season nine might center on lust. Murphy himself co-signed this theory, posting it to his Instagram with a one-word caption: “Interesting.”

The characters. Apocalypse saw the return of the Coven witches—including the true Supreme, Madison Montgomery—but they won’t be hanging around for season nine. Fan-favorite characters have been known to make cameo appearances, but my prediction is we’re looking at a slate of new narratives this time around.

This isn’t the final season. AHS has been renewed for a 10th season, so we’ll at have at least one more round of scares after season nine ends.

A Royals Expert Told Us the Real Story Behind Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton's 'Feud'


Rumors of a “feud” between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have been brewing for months. Granted, Kensington Palace shut them down in December with a rare statement, but little tidbits keep coming out suggesting there’s at least tension between the duchesses. There was that story in November about Middleton reportedly leaving Princess Charlotte’s dress fitting for Markle’s wedding “in tears.” The chatter is so incessant, in fact, that TLC released a full documentary last month outlining Markle and Middleton’s relationship.

So what is the truth? Is there really a feud, or is this all rubbish? The answer, according to royals expert Katie Nicholl, lies somewhere in the middle. “I think this idea of there being a catfight between the two duchesses has made tantalizing headlines, but I don’t think believe that,” Nicholl, a royals correspondent for Vanity Fair and The Daily Mail, tells Glamour. “I’ve never heard from my sources that there has ever been a feud or a falling out. I had heard about an upset over the dress fitting for Princess Charlotte. And I had heard that while Harry was very keen for the two of them to become best friends, there was never that sort of a friendship.”

She continues, “They quite quickly realized they were two pretty mature women—quite different women—and really the only thing they had in common was they’d married princes. Not just Prince Harry, I think probably the world wanted them to become best friends.”

These rumors originated somewhere, though, and Nicholl says there’s never smoke without fire. “I do think there is some truth to there having been some tension—not just between the duchesses but between the dukes, as well,” she explains. “As we all know, things can gather momentum pretty quickly. So while I think there’s been tension, I don’t believe there has been some feud.”

That being said, it’s Nicholl’s understanding Markle and Middleton mutually decided at some point to put on a united front. “I do know that Meghan and Kate have come to an agreement to get along, to make an effort, to be amiable and warm towards each other in public,” she says. “They both realize it’s in neither of their interests to have these catfight headlines. It’s not what either of them want.”

It’s unclear if the duchesses reached this resolution after having a one-on-one conversation. They have, of course, hung out solo in the past, but when that last happened is a mystery. “I know in the early days, Kate invited Meghan over to apartment 1A for tea,” Nicholl says. “Obviously, she took her on that high-profile trip to Wimbledon, so they have spent time together. But what I think hasn’t happened is—they haven’t become best friends out of all of it. That’s not to say they hate each other. I don’t believe that to be the case at all.”

There you have it, people. It seems like Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are just your standard sisters-in-law: not besties, but not enemies, either.
