Meghan Markle Makes First Appearance Since Announcing She's Stepping Down as a Senior Royal

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to “step back” as senior royals shocked the world over the last few days. But amid the whirlwind, the Duchess of Sussex made some time for an engagement. On Tuesday, January 14, she paid a visit to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. The organization shared that Markle had tea with members and discussed several issues affecting the community.

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, which provides a safe space for women while creating social programs, advocacy, and support, shared the news with a photo of Markle smiling next to several women. “Look who we had tea with today! The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, visited us today to discuss issues affecting women in the community,” the center wrote on Facebook.

Both Markle and Prince Harry have had a lot going on since issuing a statement that explained they hope to transition into new roles in the royal family and establish financial independence. On Monday, January 13, Prince Harry made his way back to London for a meeting convened with the Queen, in which they reportedly discussed details of what the new set-up might look like. That day, the Queen broke her silence on the situation. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,” she said. “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”

She added that Markle and Prince Harry will split their time between Canada and the U.K., and it seems that engagements like visiting the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre are all part of what the couple has envisioned in their new arrangement. They’ve said they want to keep working on the charities and public issues they’ve been championing, so Markle surely has more events like this in her future.

Issa Rae Had the Best Response After Announcing the All-Male Oscar Noms for Best Director

This morning (January 13), Issa Rae and John Cho helped announce the 2020 Oscar nominations from Los Angeles.

So many of your faves received nods, including Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan (Little Women), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit), Laura Dern (Marriage Story), and Charlize Theron (Bombshell). But much of the discussion online has been centered on who didn’t get a nomination. Some of the biggest snubs included Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers, Awkwafina for The Farewell, and Lupita Nyong’o for Us. And yet again, not a single woman was nominated in the Best Director category, where many thought Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Lorene Scarfaria (Hustlers), or Lulu Wang (The Farewell) deserved recognition.

And Issa Rae had a perfect response—and facial expression—to this news. After reading the list of names, she simply said, “Congratulations to those men.”

Twitter, of course, loved it. “‘Congratulations to those men.’ – Issa Rae introducing the Best Director category is a MOOD. #OscarNoms,” one person tweeted. “‘Congratulations to those men.’ @IssaRae is all of us, mad about the lack of a directing nod for Greta Gerwig,” another wrote, alongside a GIF of Pugh as Amy March.

This isn’t the first time a famous woman has called out an awards show for its lack of female directing nominees. In 2018, Natalie Portman was announcing the winner of the Best Director category at the Golden Globes when she said, “And here are the all-male nominees” before reading off the names. It was a fantastic burn, as well.

All internet fun aside, it’s ridiculous that we have to keep having this same conversation, year in and year out. There are so many worthy female directors that could have been nominated this year (and in the years past), and yet we still continue to see projects viewed through the male lens as more worthy of esteem and awards.

Do better, Hollywood.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Low-Key Hinted They Were Stepping Down Before Announcing It

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sent shockwaves through the palace—and world—on Wednesday, January 8, when they announced they were stepping down as senior members of the royal family. “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex posted to Instagram. Shortly after, Buckingham Palace released their own statement that suggested senior royals weren’t privy to Markle and Prince Harry’s announcement—or at least the rollout of it.

But as People magazine pointed out in an article on Friday, January 10, the Sussexes may have hinted at their plan in an IG video published on Tuesday. The post in question features footage from Markle and Prince Harry’s recent stop at London’s Canada House, and it’s soundtracked by the Raphael Lake song “Follow Me.” The lyrics to this tune are telling, especially in light of Markle and Prince Harry’s big announcement. Read just a few of them, below:

“There’s no distance in between/Darling you and me/Make this thing complete/We go drifting out to sea/Making memories..I’ll always hold on/Hopin’ you’ll miss me when I’m gone/So won’t you follow me/Follow me.”

Add this with the fact the Sussex’s video ends with them saying goodbye to the Canada House staff and facing a barrage of paparazzi, and you have what could be a hint…hidden in plain sight. Perhaps the “thing” they wanted to make “complete” was the announcement, and the “drifting out to sea” is code for them dividing time between the U.K. and North America. It’s a totally valid theory—though Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will probably never confirm this outright.

Whatever the case, they’ve returned to business as usual since Wednesday’s bombshell. On Friday afternoon, the @SussexRoyal Instagram account posted photos from Markle and Prince Harry’s recent visit to the Hubb Community Kitchen. They’ve made no mention of their stepping down since the first announcement.

“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment,” Markle and Prince Harry wrote in their release. “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”

Kate Middleton Just Made Her First Appearance Since Announcing Her Third Pregnancy

In early September, Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William announced they’re expecting a third child. “The Queen and members of both families are delighted,” read the official statement from the Royal Family, which is how the couple officially told the world their happy news.

The couple hasn’t revealed much else since making this announcement, though. We know the Duchess is experiencing morning sickness, as she did with her previous two pregnancies, and Prince William told a midwife on September 20 that he’d be seeing her “sooner” than she thinks, which led people to believe the Duchess’ due date is just around the corner. But that’s just speculation, of course.

What isn’t speculation, however, is that the Duchess made her first public appearance since announcing her pregnancy on Tuesday (October 10). She, along with Prince William and Prince Harry, hosted a Buckingham Palace reception honoring workers in the mental health field. She wore an effortlessly chic power blue dress with lacy sleeves and her hair down is flowing waves. Check out the video of her entrance into the event, below:

Mental health is a case close to the Duchess, Prince Harry, and Prince William’s hearts. In April, they released 10 powerful short films showcasing people from all walks of life speaking openly about their mental health—and, specifically, revealing who they first told about their struggles. You can watch them all, in full, here.

This appearance is coming off a news cycle dominated by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, whose relationship has been meticulously documented and analyzed. The coverage was especially heavy at last week’s Invictus Games in Toronto, where Prince Harry and Markle held hands in public for the first time.

The Duchess is reportedly due next spring.
