Adidas Released a Collection of *Game of Thrones* Sneakers

After seven seasons and countless fan theories, winter is here: The end of Game of Thrones is in sight. We don’t know much about the final six episodes, save for their air dates and length. (Though, we can watch the trailer for the umpteenth time to try to unearth new Easter eggs.) Fans of the show can, however, support their favorite House in the battle for the Iron Throne with footwear, thanks to Adidas’ epic new sneaker collection.

Ahead of its sure-to-be-mind-blowing conclusion, Adidas joined forces with Game of Thrones to design a line inspired by the Houses and major players of the Seven Kingdoms. House Stark, House Targaryen, House Lannister, the Night’s Watch, and the White Walkers all got their own Ultraboost sneakers, in colors matching their respective emblems and wardrobes. (The Night’s Watch got black-on-black, White Walkers got an icy blue and white combination, and so on.)

A tag on the back of each shoe bears the house motto, like “Fire and Blood” for the dragon-wielding Targaryens and “Hear Me Roar” for the lions of House Lannister.

Veja Sneakers Review: I Bought Vejas After I Saw Meghan Markle Wear Them

I didn’t appreciate the value of comfortable shoes until I turned 26. Before then, I walked around New York City exclusively in a pair of high-heeled Chelsea boots. Before long, I ended up with several fractured bones in my foot, and my doctor blamed my shoes. Turns out you should change up your footwear more often. Lesson learned: I needed to find a pair of comfortable yet chic sneakers to wear 24/7 instead.

On my search for the perfect pair, I tried out several popular styles, like the Adidas Shelltoe and the Nike Cortez. They had the elevated part down with their minimal color-block designs, but they never really withstood the test of time. (I walk a lot.) I needed to buy a new pair every three or four months, which was an inconvenience for my wallet (not to mention terrible for the environment). So I started to do research on brands that might be more sustainable. That’s when I came across Veja, an ethical footwear brand that has developed a cult following.

Buy Now:
Vejas Espalar Sneakers, $120, Nordstrom

Nordstrom

I’d scrolled by actors (like Emma Watson and Emily Ratajkowski) and influencers (like Jacey Duprie from Damsel in Dior) alike sporting the same minimal sneakers on Instagram without hitting “purchase.” What finally convinced to buy my own? A royal Veja spotting. After I saw Meghan Markle break out her Veja sneakers during her Australian tour with Prince Harry last year, I decided I must have them in my life.

I’ve always been a fan of Markle’s laid-back style and admire how she uses her spotlight to promote smaller, eco-friendly brands. She wore her Vejas with a casual black top and jeans, somehow looking much more stylish than I do when I roll down the street to get my coffee on the weekends. If these sneakers are good enough for a duchess, I thought, then they’re certainly good enough for me. Unfortunately, the rest of the world felt that way too. The shoes were sold out nearly everywhere I looked—both in store and online.

Fast-forward a few weeks. After searching and searching, I hit the jackpot when I found them restocked in my size at Nordstrom. I chose Veja’s Espalar style for its minimal black-and-white design and ordered them immediately. Because they’re so simple, they go with everything from long flowy dresses to a jeans and a blazer. I never think twice about wearing them to work, even at a fashion-forward office like Glamour.

It’s not just that Veja sneakers are comfortable and versatile. I can feel good wearing them knowing that they were ethically made, which can’t be said for all sneakers. Veja sources cotton directly from fair-trade-certified farming associations in Brazil and Peru, while the leather is upcycled from leftover tilapia on fish farms.

My Vejas have just one minor downside: It took a couple of wears to break them in. (Tip: Don’t wear them barefoot right out of the box.) The effort paid off, though. These days it feels like I’m walking on clouds. My feet never get tired, even after wandering around the city for 20K steps or more. All that walking hasn’t dulled their shine, either. With the help of a magic eraser, my Vejas stay spotless—perfect for a clean-sneaker snob like me.

Thanks to Duchess Meghan Markle, I’ve been united with the perfect pair of sneakers. It’s been only six weeks and I’m already screaming about my love for Veja from the rooftops. (And from my Instagram, of course.)

The Best White Sneakers for Women in 2018

I kind of hate white sneakers. I’ve never bought the Stan Smith Adidas white sneakers everyone owns in multiples. I’ve also never worn the Converse white sneakers everyone wears with everything. For most of my life I saw white sneakers as boring. They weren’t interesting enough to be worth the constant risk of dirtying every time I walked on the subway. Normcore came and went without me buying a single pair. But then this past summer I discovered platformed white sneakers by Naked Wolfe that I love so much I squeal (audibly) every time I put them on. They absolutely changed my entire wardrobe, and I don’t know how I could have lived this long without them.

What makes them different than all the white sneakers you’ve seen before is that they are actually ridiculous. Yes, you read that right. Of all the adjectives I could have chosen, ridiculous is the one best suited to describe my perfect pair of nineties-inspired chunky platform white sneakers that I love like no other. The other day I wore them out in Soho, enjoying every clunky step, when a man across the street screamed, “Hey! You! Your shoes are crazy. I love them!” I don’t know this man and I never saw him again, but he has a point. I love them too.

Logically, I shouldn’t. They are sort of crazy. But then again so is 2018, so I don’t see the issue there. The platform is so large it makes me look like a living Bratz doll ,which I don’t necessarily think is a bad thing. Every time I wear them, I’m automatically three inches taller. Unlike with white sneakers, platform white sneakers help dress an outfit up (literally), not down. Instead of blending in, they stand out and I love how they really make me stand tall. But because they are also sneakers and not heels, the natural growth spurt and confidence boost are painless. Since they’re all white, they go with everything, and the color scheme simplicity keeps them from crossing into ugly dad shoe territory. I’m also convinced they have mass appeal because whenever I wear them, someone really unexpected always compliments them. Shop my favorite pair and all the other best platform white sneakers out there below.

Kate Spade New York and Keds Made the Bridal Sneakers You'll Want to Wear on Your Wedding Day

Finding the perfect pair of shoes to wear on your wedding day might be the hardest part of planning the entire event. You have to consider comfort, your outfit, and how much time you’ll you’ll be spending on your feet… Thankfully, Kate Spade New York and Keds have your back—or, in this case, your soles—dreaming up the only type of footwear you’ll want to wear for the occasion: bridal sneakers.

As part of their ongoing collaboration, the two brands created brand-new collection of sneakers designed with weddings in mind. It features more than 30 different styles, so any bride looking for comfort and sophistication can find the perfect pair for her big day (or, you know, any day you want to wear glittery shoes—we won’t judge). The silhouettes range from triple-decker slides (if you want some height without a painful heel) to lace-ups (“something classic,” if you will). There are plenty of details, like pearls and floral appliqués, that let you match your footwear with your wedding theme or décor, should you be into that sort of thing.

“The Keds x Kate Spade New York wedding collection is the perfect union of ease and glamour for everything from the bridal shower to bridesmaids’ gifts to walking down the aisle to happily ever after,” the Keds website reads—so your entire wedding party, from your maid of honor to your ring bearer, can be decked out in the festive kicks.

Prices range from $40 for the baby sneakers and $55 for adult styles, and max out at $120 for a pearl-, flower-, or crystal-embellished slip-on pair—which, when you think about, feels like a true steal compared to some other more classic wedding-day pumps (and definitely a much better option than going barefoot or wearing socks all night when your feet start to ache). Who says that grooms are the only ones who can wear sneakers down the aisle?

See some of the cute styles, below.

Nike's New Collection Reimagines These Iconic Sneakers for Women

Stylish sneakers—like that chunky Balenciaga creation seen on virtually every model these days, something sparkly and star-studded, or a crisp white pair like Victoria Beckham’s—have played a bigger part in the fashion dialogue in recent years, largely due to the rise of streetwear. But sneaker culture can feel like a boys’ club: The coolest drops inherently cater to men by only offering larger sizes, so female sneakerheads are often relegated to collecting, not wearing, the coveted kicks. (Plus, sneakers have long been a signifier of masculinity.) When, or even if, a hotly-desired pair of kicks eventually gets produced in smaller sizes for women, materials or key details are usually downgraded. So what might a collection of athletic, aesthetically-advanced trainers look like if an entirely female creative team was in charge? Nike decided to explore precisely that scenario.

Introduction the 1 Reimagined collection: 10 overhauls of a duo of O.G. Nike styles that’ve been essential players in sneaker culture for decades, courtesy of a women-only group of designers. “We looked at two of our most iconic shoes, the Nike Air Force 1 and the Air Jordan 1, which were designed by, and for, men,” Georgina James, Nike’s senior creative director of women’s footwear, tells Glamour.

The Air Force 1, launched in 1982, and Air Jordan 1, which dates back to 1985. (The latter has played a pivotal role in streetwear culture, too.) “We reimagined them through the lens of our female consumer,” James says. “We pulled a team together of 14 women, which consisted of color design, material design, and product design.” The color, material, and product design pros collaboratively tackled five different traits—explorer, jester, lover, rebel and sage—for each seminal shoe. There’s lots of fashion-y, #OOTD-worthy detailing: Think added height, lacing up the back instead of the front, and subtle proportional exaggerations. The collection ranges from $120 to $160 per pair, and will be available on February 7 at Nike.com and in Nike’s Soho location in NYC; on February 16, the 1 Reimagined collection will drop widely in Nike stores nationally.

“We designed this collection from start to finish in five weeks, which was incredibly quick,” explains Marie Crow, material design director of Nike Sportswear NikeWomen. From conception to launch, 1 Reimagined took around 10 months; by contrast, the creative timeline for a collection is typically at least two years long, she says. The design phase of just over a month was quick because working so collaboratively was markedly different from the standard creative process, per James and Crow.

Tackling this intriguing female-centric facelift on two of the biggest classic styles for the brand —and within the greater sneaker canon across companies—was more collaborative than most sneaker ideation and launch processes tend to be, James says: “I really wanted to make sure everyone was involved in the design process, so every designer on the team touched every shoe, instead of dishing out one shoe [to design] per person. We very much worked as a female collective, and I think it ultimately made the products stronger.”

Successfully taking a tried-and-true classic—especially ones that have been a part of the public imagination for so long—back to the drawing board and somehow improving things presented its own unique challenges, according to James. “On a few styles, it was more difficult and took more time to get the proportions just right; for the Air Force 1 Rebel XX’s cutouts to be the most beautiful, flattering shape on the foot took some time,” she says. The Sage versions for both the Air Jordans and Air Force 1s was trickier to execute as well. “The simplicity [of the Sage styles] means there’s nothing to hide; when you pare something back to be so minimal, every line and everything on that shoe has to be perfectly beautiful,” James adds.

The construction of a women’s sneaker is essentially the same as a men’s or unisex style, per James and Crow; but, unlike the creative process for most sneakers (which have historically catered to the male consumer) it was female customers that propelled the 1 Reimagined design process. “When we design for women, we understand that they love attention to detail,” Crow notes, referring specifically to the Lover styles in 1 Reimagined. “There’s iridescent material hidden underneath the shoe’s iconic perforation, so you get a nice discovery element and flashes of motion.” Proportion play was also key for the Lover iterations: “We pushed the design to the limit by creating a mule with raised collar height,” James says.

Nike has been doubling down on its women’s business for the past few years. Behind the scenes, that’s resulted in recently-created product and design teams devoted to Nike Women’s Running, Sportswear and Training, per James and Crow. (Both stress that being female sneaker designers hasn’t made it more difficult to succeed in the industry, though plenty of female designers and boutique owners in the sneaker space have been vocal about sexism in the business.) The company has honed in on women with innovations like the inaugural Flyknit bra and inclusion-minded launches like its first-ever hijab and plus sizing.

An all-women team, creating a legitimately female-focused sneaker collection, is a promising move for a powerhouse sportswear brand (and huge corporation) to make. It’s a hopeful sign for women who love sneakers, whether or not you’re a full-fledged sneaker head—and also, perhaps, women who design and sell sporty kicks. Check out the full array of revamps by and for women of the Jordans and Air Force 1s you know and love, ahead.
