Santa Fe High School Shooting Survivors Call for an End to Gun Violence 'Inaction'


Following a deadly shooting at Texas’ Santa Fe High School that left eight students and two teachers dead, survivors organized a press conference in west Houston on Friday to call for stricter gun laws and tougher gun violence prevention strategies across the country.

Students specifically spoke out against politicians who “think that doing nothing is acceptable.” The emotionally charged event received support from March For Our Lives organizers, who also came together earlier this year after a student opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, killing 17 people and sparking national outrage. The incident at Santa Fe High School has put their efforts back in the news as students and advocates again ask for more than thoughts and prayers.

“The truth is that whatever we are doing as a society—or not doing—is not working,” Megan McGuire, a junior at Santa Fe High School, said. “Inaction is not an option. We must do something, and we must get it right. School safety is a complex issue.”

Celebrities have taken up call for action as well: On Sunday at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, Kelly Clarkson decided to swap a moment of silence remembering the victims of the shooting for what she called a “moment of acton.”

“I’m so sick of moments of silence. It’s not working. Like, obviously,” she said. “So why don’t we not do a moment of silence? Why don’t we do a moment of action? Why don’t we do a moment of change? Why don’t we change what’s happening? Because it’s horrible.”

According to ABC News, the survivors of the Santa Fe High School shooting made it clear that they were not looking to remove guns from their owners.

McGuire explained that her dad and grandparents are gun owners: “I don’t want to take away their guns, or your guns for that matter. What I mean by gun safety is common-sense solutions to keep those who wish to harm themselves or others from obtaining guns.”

But the most resounding message at Friday’s press conference was targeted at politicians who refuse to act.

“I want to thank everyone for all of their thoughts and prayers; they are very needed and appreciated. But I do have something for elected officials who think that doing nothing is acceptable,” McGuire said. “My thought is that if you do not do something, you do not have a prayer of being elected. My generation will see to that.”

The MAC x Jeremy Scott Palettes Look Like Your High School Mix Tapes


If you were a kid of the nineties/early aughts, you most certainly remember the thrill of firing up Napster. Waiting 10 minutes for each song to download was absolutely worth the indelible feeling of coming up with a great name to Sharpie on a warm, freshly burned CD. In terms of nostalgia, it’s high up there with Steve Madden’s stretchy sandals and anything Britney. Which bring us to this: MAC and designer Jeremy Scott are teaming up on collection of palettes that look exactly like mixed tapes—down to the scrawled-on handwriting that only came with meticulous practice.

Given pop culture’s current obsession with all things from the era and the fact that Scott is the one behind the recent Ugg resurgence, the line isn’t all that surprising. Nonetheless, the packaging is so cute it’s pretty hard not to love. Starting with the Acoustica Cheek palette ($35), every detail is spot on: It’s got everything from the delightfully punny name (“Cheeky Mixtape Vol. 1”) to the bubble-dot “I”.

For the full experience, the exterior packaging is also a relic with realistic CD sleeves. The cheek colors inside are just as good, a peachy pink blush, warm bronzer, and shimmery champagne highlighter.

That attention to detail keeps up through the Future Emotion lip palette ($35), a set of nine lip colors packaged in a cassette case. Sharpie alias: Bumpin Jamz with a squiggly underline, in true nineties style. Like the cheek colors, the colors inside are likewise timeless. They run from crimson, to fuchsia, to wine, and hit a vibrant purple along the way.

And here’s where things go seriously AV club (or Say Anything). The collection’s last piece is the boombox-packaged Lo-Fi eyeshadow palette ($75), with 29 shadows inside. Picture club neons in shades of gold, pink, blue, green, purple, and orange, plus a center set of work-appropriate cool neutrals. The front is again beyond accurate, from the mixboard where you could pump up the bass to the cassette slot with a mini, faux version of the lip palette.

Prince George Looks Absolutely Adorable on His First Day of School

Ah, to be 4 years old again. Prince George, despite his princely title and the almost-certain fact that he’ll be reigning over the United Kingdom someday, just embarked on a right of passage for all youngsters everywhere: his first day of school.

As reported by The Telegraph, George was escorted to his posh Thomas’s Battersea school on Wednesday morning by his father, Prince William. Mom Kate Middleton, sadly, wasn’t able to accompany the two due to her intense morning sickness, as she is currently about 12 weeks pregnant with her third child. “Unfortunately the Duchess of Cambridge remains unwell, and will not be able to accompany Prince George on his first day of school,” a statement released by Kensington Palace read. “The Duke of Cambridge will drop off Prince George this morning as planned.”

George’s arrival was a casual affair, with William taking him by the hand and holding his backpack while they walked up to the building. He’ll be required to wear a spiffy little uniform while attending Thomas’s Battersea—look at that sweater and polo combo!—and he’ll eschew his royal title, per The Telegraph, to be referred to as George Cambridge by his teachers and peers. Additionally, his class will contain about 22 children and he’ll reap in the benefits of his own desk and locker. Just don’t expect any VIP treatment.

“Our aim for him, as well as for all of our pupils, is to provide a safe and secure and happy environment where he feels supported by a kind and loving community. That’s all we will be trying to achieve for him,” the school’s headmaster explained. “There won’t be any special treatment at all. In fact what his parents would like for him, as any parent would like for their child, is they have a wonderful, fulfilling, and private childhood in a place which is secure … We want him to have the confidence to be himself with all his quirks and idiosyncrasies and characteristics.”

St. Kateri Will Open for First Day of School in Spite of Delays in Construction

St. Kateri, a Catholic school in Fort MacMurray, will be open for the first day of the 2014-2015 school year in spite of the delays in construction that have occurred. Valerie Dyck, the principal of St. Kateri, has said that any student who is registered will be welcome on the first day, and classes at this Fort MacMurray school will start on schedule even though some areas of the building are not completely finished and can not be utilized right away. Most registrations are handled online, but if parents wish to do this in person they can visit the temporary office which will be at the Holy Trinity Catholic High School until the start of the school year.

St. Kateri school in Fort MacMurray is well aware of the concerns about student safety. According to Valerie Dyck “The current situation is they’re going full steam ahead (with construction) and things are looking good. It’s all coming together. Construction should have minimal impact on students. Wherever students are not supposed to be, we will have safety fencing. We will have lots of signage for the public, whether they’re walking in or driving in … and of course, teachers will be extra vigilant, as we always are during supervision, to make sure students are staying where they’re supposed to be. Students won’t be able to go in where they’re still working, and likewise, workers won’t be able to get into the school. Currently around 430 students are already registered.
